They both need an escape, and they find it through each other.
With a local mob searching for him, newspaper reporter Jasper needs to get out of New Orleans fast. When her brother threatens to make her a soiled dove in St. Joseph, Opal needs someone to save her.
Her newspaper ad looking for a husband catches his eye and he escapes to marry her sight unseen. They soon realize their new spouse needs just as much saving, just from different threats. But when Opal's brother contacts the mob after Jasper, they realize the only way they can survive is together!
Allison Wells is an author, wife, and mother who is also a logophile (a lover of words). The desire to write came early for Allison. After graduating from Clemson, Allison became a newspaper reporter. Tired of constantly writing bad news, she began writing novels. Now, Allison writes for regional publications and enjoys writing southern novels with elements of faith. In her writing, Allison feels led to bring an element of reality to her readers. She recognizes that living a Christian life does not mean everything is rosy all the time, and she wants to represent that with her writing, while still wrapping things up with a happy ending. Allison's motto is Life is Short, Eat the Oreos.
The story is part of the Honorable Husbands series by various authors and each story will read as a stand-alone and can be read in any order. These are clean, Western historical tales that mitigating circumstances will result in couples seeking a mail-order spouse.
Jasper Sullivan is a journalist with the newspaper in New Orleans. When he infiltrated Mad Mitt Brozinski’s organization as a lackey to gain information which he reported in The Times-Picayune newspaper, it placed a marker on his head. Brozinski was sentenced to jail, but he had family and plenty of others still doing his bidding, including the elimination of Jasper. He has been hiding out at the paper but needs to get out of town fast. An ad written by a woman may be his ticket away.
“Wanted: ASAP: Honest, respectable husband for a young woman of twenty-three years. Write to Opal in St. Joe, MO.”
Opal Aimington’s life has never been easy. Losing her father when she was a child, then her brother left and worked in a saloon which he now owns, it has been her and momma scraping out an existence. But momma is sick and for Oberon to help pay the medical bills he has Opal working at the Saintly Saloon in the kitchen. He has stated that when Momma passes, Opal will become one of his fallen angels working upstairs. So in desperation, she places an ad in newspapers looking for a husband.
“I never could have imagined when I placed that ad that someone like him would have answers. He’s everything I dreamed and so much more.”
The story will have Jasper sneaking out of the newspaper office and making it to the train, heading north toward St. Joseph, Missouri. Not knowing what to expect when he meets Opal, she isn’t what he was thinking, and is very pleased with her—and her fierce two friends. It is arranged to marry immediately, but using his name makes things risky, so he goes by his mother’s maiden name, Callahan.
When danger is coming their way due to Oberon's machinations, Jasper and Opal must leave the area until it is safe again. With Brozinski’s men coming to pay retribution, and Oberon wanting to get Opal, they go on the run. The journey is rough, on one horse, with bare necessities. But along the way, they meet several interesting people who are either friends or family of her friends, Celia and Luella.
Celia: Is this man worth all this upheaval, Opal? I’m sure you can get this marriage annulled and say he married you under false pretenses. Opal: He is, Celia. The more time I spend with him, the more I realize I am falling for him. I couldn’t stand it if anything happened to him. And I don’t think I could stand being apart from him, either. It’s like God sent him specifically for me. Celia: I can’t say I understand it, but I can see it in your face. You would follow him to the moon. Opal: I really would. We might have married for convenience, but I’ll stay with him for love. He’s my future.
The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people. I love Opal’s support system of friends, and it is others in town, not just her two girlfriends. Even Jasper had good friends in New Orleans who assisted him. While a marriage of convenience, brings two people together, both with situations, it doesn’t define them or their character. What started as a need, soon turns to strong feelings and love.
This was a sweet, fun story. Opal had a terrible brother who owned a saloon and wanted her to be one of his “upstairs girls”. She needed to find a way to escape that horrific situation. She placed an ad for a mail order husband.
Jasper needs to escape New Orleans, where he is a newspaper man. An article he wrote exposing a crime syndicate is after him. He sees Opal’s ad and jumps at the chance. Little does he know how his life is about to change.
I was a little surprised that there was no baby after three years of marriage.
I really enjoyed this book - I like the twist on the mail order story with the husband being the one that is answering the mail order request. Jasper is on the run from some shade characters that he exposed in one of his new stories and answers the ad that Opal has put in the matrimonial times. Opal parents are gone and her brother has some sinister plans for her. I like the way Jasper and Opal fight for each other and the way Wells develops their feeling for one another. This is a great story and one that I think people who enjoy historical/western romance would enjoy.
Reading Mail Order Journalist was a pleasure. Jasper has just written his best story of his career and now that want him dead. Jasper decides to leave New Orleans quickly and become a mail order husband to cover his tracks. Thinking that Opal was not going to be the perfect wife, but he would be safe. Boy was he wrong on both counts. You have to read the story to find out how they both escape harm and start their life's journey to forever.
A lovely addition to the Honorable Husband series by different authors. The best way to discover new authors or support your favorite. Just as I have. Allison is/was a new author for me. I enjoyed read about the rollercoaster of events between Jasper and Opal. Unexpected love happens from a marriage of convenience.
Jasper is a newspaper reporter that has stepped on the wrong side of the mob. He is doomed to die at their hands and know he must leave town quickly. He answers an ad placed by Opal, who is also in an awful and dangerous situation, for a mail order husband. This is a rip-roaring adventure with lots of excitement, danger, and emotion. It is a good read!
A marriage based on serious immediate needs. Both Opal and Jasper have reasons to need the marry, whether it is to escape dangerous criminals or a bad brother, marriage and name changes were needed by both. We have danger, humor, romance and a few twists. Allison Wells is a new to me author, but I will definitely look for more of her stories.
Opal and Jasper need each other. What a team they turn out to be. From evil brother to evil mobsters, they face it together and turn a place used for evil into such a place of blessings.
A really enjoyable, shortish read. Loved how went from desperation to devoted, to growing and thriving, and doing good to benefit others too. Would be interested in more of this Author's books if this good.
This was absolutely a great book and by a great author. I highly recommend this book and author. I can’t wait to read the next book by this wonderful author.
