A well balanced and well argued book, Pinfield has based his career on supporting and nurturing Open Access.
This book offers a methodical guide through three modes of Open Access: scientific, epistemic, and participatory openness. The differences and alignments are well presented.
For me there are two areas that were not convincing for me, but I acknowledge that for many readers, there would be no issues at all. The use of critical realism made the book appear dated, as did the very overworked concepts of the Global South and Global North. Instead, the exploration of some of the new literature on the benefits of OA for region-based research would have been welcome.
Well written. Well researched. A pleasure to read.
