Storm Princess Saga #1

The Princess Must Die

Rate this book
“Will you wait for me?” he asks.
I whisper, “I would wait a lifetime for you.”

The last warrior in the House of Rath…

I thought he died. I watched him bleed out on a cold mountainside while thunder and lightning formed a cage around me, trapping me in a power I never wanted.

The Storm…

It chose me. A furious force unleashed in vengeance, the Storm’s destruction would rage across the kingdom if not for me.

Day after day, I survive its wrath, taking the lightnings strikes, the icy needles of rain, and absorbing its deadly force, stopping its fury.

Through it all, I bury my memories, and force myself to forget the promise I made, denying what I want most.

My heart…

Now, Baelen Rath has returned, wearing the scars of battle, and vowing to fight for me.

He burns through the walls I’ve built around my heart, drawing me in, body and soul.

But the closer he gets to me, the clearer it becomes that he has secrets he didn’t have before.

So do I.

Because the Storm is changing and its power is growing.

Like the fire Baelen ignites within me, soon it will be beyond my control.

Y'all, I had no idea what to expect when picking this one up. I've never read the author (though I've heard of her), the cover art was throwing me off for some reason, but in the end I decided to give it a go. I am really glad I did! Marbella is a princess I can root for, her Storm Guard are nothing short of badass, and Bae is, well Bae I guess. Interesting lore surrounding elves and gargoyles. Definitely ready to learn more about the gargoyles, especially after that somewhat charged encounter Marbella had. Though it plays on one if my peeves, the whole "keeping secrets for their own good" trope, I still enjoyed the heck out of this one. Will definitely be reading the next one in the series!!

I do like Jaymin Eve 's writing so I keep getting back to her books. I'm not sure what I feel about this book. One one hand, the concept, the plot is interesting. But on the other hand, the romance had no build-up. I wanted frustration, friends to lovers theme and heartache, but what we got was the opposite. I wanted the males be to more powerful, more alpha male, like Jaymin Eve 's other male character - ehem Braxton is still her best male - but I didn't really get much off him. And I didn't connect as much with Marbella. Overall, the read was okay, I only started to skim closer to the end. It was predictable and lacked depth - at least in my eyes. But it was fast forward, easy to read for not too much information.

Characters:
Marbella Mercy (24), the Storm Princess - Marbella was eighteen when the storm chose her to become The Storm Princess, now seven years later ..... When she turns 25, she is required to bond with the strongest male elf - found by trials. From one of the poorest, lowest elven Houses.
Baelen ‘Bae’ Rath, a warrior and leader of the feared House of Rath. The only remaining Rath. Is now the Commander of the armed forces and the only male allowed near Marbella. One of the oldest, most powerful Houses.
Elise, Marbella's personal advisor. A spellcaster.
Mai Reverie, the princess - an affinity with the rain - before Marbella who was a dancer. Marbella don’t have the grace for dancing. Combat moves are the closest she gets. Her husband, Darian Gild.
Jordan, the head of all-female personals guard, also known as the Storm Command or as Marbella calls them, the nunnery. As the head of Marbella's personal guard, Jordan is ranked more highly than any other military officer. She doesn’t control the army—only the nunnery—but no other elf can give her orders except for me. The only military position of higher authority than Jordan’s is the Commander of the elven army. Baelen’s father, Rordan (past away last year) used to fill that position, and after his death, a temporary replacement filled the position.
Rebecca, of the House of Reverie. She’s Mai’s advisor.
Macsen, Marbella's brother who she hasn't seen in seven years. Will be a proxy for Baelen during the trials.
Sebastian, from the House of Splendor. Had a budding relationship with Jordan until her House, Splendor, nominated her to be a member of the Storm Command
Gideon Glory, Pedr Bounty, Osian Valor, Teilo Splendor and Elwyn Elder, Elven Commanders. Even though every elven House has an equal vote, Elwyn holds the highest seat so in a deadlock he has the deciding vote. They’re members of the five highest Houses: Elder, Splendor, Glory, Valor, and Bounty.
Reisha Gild, one of the Storm Commands.
Sahara Splendor, Sebastian's mother. Daughter of Teilo.

Some The champions:
Baelen from the House of Rath.
Simon from the House of Splendor.
Eli from the House of Elder.
Rhydian from the House of Valor.
Sebastian, from the House of Splendor.
Jasper from the House of Grace.
Garrett of the House of Glory.
Gwynn of the House of Bounty.
Harmon of the House of Faith.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Upper YA) Paranormal Fantasy.
Series: - Series, Book One.
Love triangle? -

Favorite character? - The gargoyle we met in the cage.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes.

I didn't really like this one. The plot had several holes and the one that irked me the most was Marabella knowing how to fight and being stronger than her guards when she had no fought in seven years, even more than that . The romance was non existent. I love dual POVs and that couldn't even save this book for me. I got the box set and I'm not interested in reading the rest.

Thank you Sharon J for recommending this book to me. This was a fantastic read. I loved this book so much. The story was amazing. I love Marbella. She was a badass heroine and I want to be friends with her. Baelen is the only man that Marbella trusts. I love how he is a warrior. He really cares for Marbella. Also, the romance was a slow burn. I loved how Marbella and Baelen are so devoted to each other. I thought their relationship was really amazing. I can’t wait to see how their relationship progresses through the series. I thought the ending was amazing. Overall, an amazing read.

THIS WAS SO GOOD!!!

Marbella Mercy is the Storm Princess. Chosen by the Storm, she is the only one that can keep the Storm from unleashing itself onto the Elven people that live under the streets of Chicago. But now that she's of age, champions from every clan are coming to try and calm her storm. Unfortunately for Marbella, she learns that a curse is brewing and that her husband will kill her. When the trials begin, Marbella claims herself another champion and is determined to fight for herself and win.

The one thing complicating all of this is Baelen Rath, an esteemed warrior from the House of Rath and Mara's childhood lover. He is determined to save her from herself, but can she let him? I really loved this story so much. I cannot wait to binge the others in this series.

Mara was a girl after my own heart. I loved how independent and strong she was. She also became a badass warrior by the end of this and I am just blown away. The plot was very action based, there's always a trial ton conquer, a storm to be tamed or a piece of the curse to be revealed. Plus we slowly learn about Mara and Baelen's relationship. I am really rooting for these two and I hope to see more of their relationship develop in book 2.

As Storm Princess, Mara walks around escorted by 10-20 of her guards at all times. I loved the relationship she had with her storm guard. They all fiercely cared and supported her no matter what, even though their relationship was strictly defined by the council. Jordan was my favorite character besides Marbella. These two supported each other so ferociously and they would definitely tear down the world for each other. I really hope we get to see more of Jordan!

Lastly, there's the amazing world building. I loved the Elvin-Gargoyle mythology that was woven into this world. I can't wait to learn more about the Gargoyle's and what threats are surrounding them.

I finished the first book last night, but will not be reading the second or third books. There were giant plot holes in this story that it seems many people just overlook.

For example, the main character has not trained in SEVEN YEARS, yet after one week of training she can defeat TEN of her Storm Guard, who are supposed to be elite warriors.

Another example, the curse that forces the main character to fight. Why is it that that curse is broken when the spell caster is killed, yet the curse that leads to the entire story line (the storm curse) was not broken when that spell caster died? I get that the gargoyle gave up her life to make the Storm curse, but if the second curse (the one with the future husband) is able to be broken with the death of the man who cast it, then that should be true of all curses, especially since both curses began with a death. But then there would be no book because the Storm curse would not exist.

A third example - how is it that the woman who is basically the most powerful in this kingdom (and who is the reason the entire kingdom is still alive) has absolutely ZERO power when it comes to anything other than controlling the Storm.

Anyway, this book was not for me.

Just a quick backstory about myself- I have to be up at 6am to get ready for work everyday. I have an extraordinary love for and deeply value my sleep.
I stayed up will 3am finishing this because I just could NOT put it down. The story hooked its claws into me and would not let go.

This book is written so insanely well. It tells us things that have happened to bring our characters where they are but doesn’t give a true view of these things until the end of the book. So throughout the read you’re teased with these happenings wondering how they truly went down and finally you find out and you’re left speechless!

Marbella is such a kickass no holds barred character. She is strong, and willing to fight for what she loves, believes in, and knows is right! Her strength through out the book brought countless giddy moments to my life. She is interesting and keeps you on your toes!
Baelan is my current book crush. He is such a gritty and hardcore character! What he has went through is amazing and he’s come out on the other side stronger for it and willing to be a total badass.

At first I thought I hated The Storm. By the end of the book I realize I love it and can’t wait to see more.

This is such a seriously amazing book and it will give you all the right feels while also bringing a tear to your eye and making you fist pump like an idiot at 2am.
READ THIS and thank me later 😘🙌🏼

Best Fantasy Book I've Read In Decades

Every and Jaymin created a world that is truly amazing. This story has everything that I love about epic fantasy adventures. Secrets revealed, betrayal, love, and special friendships. This is the best fantasy book that I've read in decades. I rate it right up there with the Belgariad and Mellorean series by David Eddings or The Elfstones of Shanara by Terry Brooks. I'm really looking forward to see where these ladies take us next.

There are so many glowing reviews of Storm Princess that I was a bit wary about the book, but I was interested enough to give it a try.

It turns out that the story is okay, but, to my mind, nothing out of the ordinary. There are passages that stand out (when Marbella meets the gargoyle), and then there are areas that let it down (Mei’s role in the story is so limited that the plot line that eventually culminates in her doesn’t hit as hard as it should).

Furthermore, I’m not yet sure why the authors felt it would be a good idea to set the story in a world that exists between the Earth’s crust and its core. Our human world has no impact on the story thus far, so I don’t see why it was necessary to set the story in our world and not another.

The romance was okay, but it lack a certain je ne sais quoi that would have helped me to be more invested in it. I quite liked Baelen as a character, but I think he needed more development to work better for me.

The story is given structure by following the trials that Marbella and her suitors are submitted to in order to prove themselves. There are hints at a larger plot going on beyond the scenes, but it’s not developed here at all. This serves to pique the reader’s interest in reading the second book, but the trials weren’t exciting enough to really hold my interest throughout the whole of this book.

I enjoyed the book but it didn’t blow me away.

Unique and wonderful 😁❤️

The Princess Must Die is the first collaboration between these two authors and wow is it amazing!!!!! This is definitely one of my favourite Jaymin Eve series openers - it might even be my favourite!!!!! It’s just a nonstop rollercoaster and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what would happen next. The Princess is a very unique character with a special and specific role within her society that sets her apart and makes her powerful- she is an incredibly loveable character and the supporting cast within the story are wonderfully written. This is an absolute must read for all fantasy fiction fans and I cannot wait to read book 2. 😍 5 stars 😁

Oh my gosh this book is awesome. From the first few pages it just drew me and had me hooked. This is one of the best books I've read in a while and I didn't want it to end. The main character, Marbella has a one of a kind role in the world this is set in, although she has people around her at the beginning of the book she's very much alone. We see her building up relationships and becoming more her own person. She also gets to rebuild a relationship with one smoking hot, and incredibly loyal male. He is swoonworthy.
Seriously, this was my most enjoyable read so far this year. I have a feeling that the next book is only going to top that. The Princess Must Die is a five star must read book. Don't delay, pick it up now and see just how incredibly awesome this book is. I loved it!

I stayed up till 1 am finishing this because I couldn't put it down, I really liked it. It was nice to have a main character that didnt have running doubts going through her head. She worried and she didnt seem perfect but it was nice to just see confidence like yep I can fight now I need to worry about someone else etc.

I loved this book so much it was different than any other book with elves I have ever read I thoroughly enjoyed all of the book. I loved the characters so much especially Marbella and Baelen I loved their relationship even with the amount of time they spent apart you would really tell how strong the love between them still was and how nothing could stop it anymore. I also really liked they the characters were not teenagers and everything was more mature. I loved Marbella for her perseverance and the fact she would do anything just so Baelen would live and I still loved her strength of character she makes a great main character. I really loved the plot it takes place seven years after her powers injured the one she loved so she blamed herself for that and now he is back and in the competition for her hand in marriage. The story is so great I really liked the embodiment of the Storm and how that was represented there was so many great things in this story I really liked and am looking forward to more soon.

I loved this book so much. It's been awhile since I read a fantasy romance book that hooked me like this one did.

Marbella is such a strong and determined heroine. She is a little beaten down in the beginning, but she quickly learns to fight back, and once she does, she kicks ass and takes names. No bull shit, no muss, no fuss, she is fighting for her right to live free and she doesn't hold her punches.

The book also has some strong court intrigue vibes, and as the story unravels about the elven council, I was hooked. I can't wait to find out what exactly transpired between the gargoyles and elves to put then at war, to have them hold such strong grudges, and if Marbella can bridge the gap between their races.

Although the romance with Baelen was a very slow burn, it also had an almost "fated mates" feel to it. I loved that they both seemed to entirely devoted to one another, and I can't wait to see their relationship explored in the rest of the saga. Thank god the next two books are coming within the next couple months!!

If you like fantasy romance, court intrigue, or just fun and unique fantasy worlds, this is the book for you!

This is honestly the coolest book. I loved literally everything about it. The main character, Marbella, is incredible. The Storm, and her role as the Storm Princess, are really interesting. World building is excellent, and all of the other characters, especially the love interest, Baelen, are awesome! Elven culture is also very interesting. This book is paced fabulously, with action, excitement, intrigue, and romance. I read through the whole trilogy in two days, and I cannot recommend it enough. Check it out! It's 5 stars all the way through, and each book builds so well on the previous one. I have plans to reread them soon!

5 stars! The main characters usefulness is very important to me so I'm glad that we didn't get a useless princess here. She's smart, resourceful and even though her powers and fighting skills are on that Deus X level she's still amazing on her own. I'm absolutely interested in the next installment.

This books plot is a nice new concept, which I enjoyed.
The characters are very endearing with a lot of malicious potential and wrath to unleash.
It was also a nice quick read, and with the following instalments already released and reasonably cheap, things are looking good.

***3.5***

This was surprisingly an entertaining book. I didn't know what to expect when I started listening to it. But the story is engaging and entertaining despite some plot holes.

The world building is not huge or clunky. You are pretty much put in the middle of it. The storm princess is about Marbella and her ability to control and wield storm. Without her, the fae are pretty much doomed. She is protected by her storm guard and basically, nobody can touch her physically or metaphorically. Yet, there are forces working against her to remove her as the storm princess and get all her power. She's not like the other storm princesses that have been there before her. Why?? well, definitely read up to find out :)

Baelen Rath, is a commander and last heir to his clan. He's also in love with Marbella. Also, they both share a past. He is protective, calm, stoic, powerful and not a jackass. While I am all for a-hole dudes turned lovable...sometimes, it is refreshing to read about other kinds of dudes. He's a good guy and will go to any length to protect Marbella.

The story revolves around the championship and the manipulation of the Elven commanders. They are hell bent on controlling the outcome to suit their needs. Not to mention, they will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. I wish there was more explanation for the curse magic used. Little bit more of the world to understand it better. The princess being a bit more proactive and do more than just wield storm. I would like to know more about the Gargoyles, who are enemy numero uno. I guess we find out more about them in book 2.

I must say, the narrator did an awesome job with the voices, tones and emotions. She definitely made the story enjoyable.

This is a pseudo-traditional fantasy set far under the surface of earth, below Chicago. The fair folk and gargoyles long ago moved there civilizations to safety in magically powered countries under the surface of the earth. These places are vast and populated by many magical creatures. Every generation, one young woman is chosen by the storm to be the storm princess. This is the story of the 4th one. "Chosen" in this case means she is not harmed by lightening and can in fact channel it through her body to calm the supernatural storm that is trapped in a building in the city. There are all kinds of rules about how she lives, and she can't ever touch anyone. There are also rules about how she chooses a husband - a tournament of sorts. The final round of the tournament is always to the death. The princess figures out that a curse has been cast on the tournament that will compel the winner to kill her, so she enters the tournament as her own champion, but unfortunately, the love of her life also enters the tournament, and if she tells him about the curse, it will somehow trigger a fail safe and kill them all anyway. Meanwhile, there are military tensions between her people and the gargoyles.

The personalities of the characters in this book are a little stiff - a little too formal and by-the-books stuffed shirt. I didn't love them. But the story is well crafted for what it is, and I'm guessing it's a trilogy. I am a little curious to find out what happens next.

I had high hopes for this book but honestly it fell a bit short of my expectations but I am going to reread it at a later date in the hopes that maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this book right now.

The main character is Marbella, a young woman who has the power to wield storms and who is about to have a bunch of men fighting for the honor of marrying her. But Marbella has one person in mind that she actually would quite like to marry but she doesn't want him competing for her. Marbella is strong and powerful and full of sass and who is fighting a powerful force.

There are some secondary characters but I didn't think they were all that noteworthy, but this may change on a second read.

The storyline had good promise and I think maybe with a second reading this review will most likely change and it may even go to a 5 star rating, but for the minute.

I did really enjoy this start to the series. Our FMC Marbella, Princess of Storm, was caring, humble, totally loyal to her friends, and a total unsung Bad A. I felt like our princess and Bae, our leading male, had incredible chemistry, even with their heartbreaking past. Even our side characters had pretty good depth.

Marbella Mercy, of House of Mercy, is an elven girl raised as a servant. Her entire house is a serving house they serve the needs of the other Elven houses mainly House of Rath. During her childhood her and Bae, the heir of Rath, were the best of friends until one fateful night her and Bae were caught in the storm and she was struck by lightning and chosen to be the next Storm Princess by the storm itself, and in the process Bae was gravely injured. Years later the injury of Bae has haunted her, but she must do her duty. She must entire the vault almost daily to temper the storm that threatens her people. Coming up on her 25th birthday a ceremony insues to choose her mate as all the houses enter to win honor for their families, but all is not as it seems. The storm has given her a warning and now she must fight for her own hand.

I am really interesting to see where this is headed, the lore and history though coming midway through the story and was very short was incredibly interesting. I cant wait to continue the story to see where it goes and to see what really caused the storm in the beginning.

This book is actually pretty good. It's readable, throws you right into the action, and accomplishes world building pretty quickly. It's got a strong feminist bent, which I enjoyed. The MC basically has to fight for her own hand in marriage in order to save her life.

I had some issues with execution of the feminist arc, mainly that it takes her life being in danger for her to be like wow it's fucked up that men are going to compete for my hand in marriage but...this doesn't really make her any less badass of an MC. She's strong, fights well, is very kind, honorable—I enjoyed reading about her.

The magic in this is super cool, if underdeveloped. The storm chooses a new princess every few decades, and I loved seeing how this happens. But. There was just sooo much new magic being thrown at us on every page, and the plot couldn't contain it all. There was littler explanation of "deep magic" and it felt as if the authors had written themselves into a hole with the basic plot line and then filled the magic in around it, rather than the two growing organically.

Baelen is a great hero and love interest. I love this trend of protective, calm, stoic, badass dudes who just want to hype their girlfriends.

I sent this back to KU. The novel began with too much energy for me, too mich anxiety, and not enough actual information. Tried several times to get into it but it just wasn't happening. I didn’t like the characters and the plot seemed too fantastic to be believable. I’ll have to suspend reality too much to read this novel. Maybe i’ll try again later but i doubt it. If i do, i’ll revise my stars.

This took a bit to catch me. There was really any history, any explanation as to what a Storm Princess is, why she is. Finally, a good third way in it was explained. Well not really explained, but enough that I stopped questioning why I had yet to give up on finishing this book. The final 20%, now that was some great storytelling. It makes me are, makes me root for Baelen. Makes me proud of Marabella. I hope book two isn't as slow, I don't know I'll stick that out if it is.
