One of a Kind by Jane Lovering is a unique and interesting romantic mystery /romystery (is that a thing??). The main characters, Cressida and Ivo, set off to solve a murder all whilst trying to help animals! I love that the characters were so relatable. As readers, we are privy to Cress's insecurities and struggles (we all have them) with her career, love life, and feelings for Ivo. Ivo is neurodivergent and this book really describes his personality and quirky traits quite well. I totally connected with Ivo and am happy to see neurodiversity represented. This novel is definitely good for neurotypical people to get an insight into what it can be like for neurodivergent people and vice versa AND there's a murder to solve and squirrels to save along the way!
Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an advanced readers copy of One of a Kind in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed it!

Thank you Netgalley, Jane Lovering, and Boldwood Books for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Cress is a wildlife rescuer, as opposed to her fancy friend/crush Ivo, who comes from a posh background. Though he can be overbearing and annoying at times due to his scatterbrain, she has gotten used to his quirks and often wonders how it would feel to be with him romantically. However, being risk averse as she is, she never expresses her true feelings to him. But when Ivo becomes fixated on the idea that a red squirrel found inside the pocket of a dead man is more than it seems and wants to investigate the case after the police drops it, Cress has no choice but to follow him. She wants to make sure he stays out of trouble and to ensure the safe return of the squirrel to its home. One clue leads to another, which eventually leads to a small trip to the Isle of Wight - and Ivo might just have been right. There is more to the story of the squirrel and the dead man than it seemed at first.

Cress is a humble and kind woman who worked a job she loves despite the low wages. Though she is a good character overall, sometimes I got annoyed with her reasoning.

Ivo felt like a typical ENFP person given his many talents and ADHD. I loved him throughout the book - the way he explains himself to Cress, his hyper-focus, instincts, the way his brain works, and his feelings. He tried his best to make Cress understand, and I love that she accepted him as he is.

The plot started small enough but soon turned into a full-blown mystery. I enjoyed the unraveling, the twists and turns, and Ivo's comedic relief in between.

This is the first novel I read by Jane Lovering, and I am quite impressed with her writing. I would suggest this novel if you love a cozy mystery with unique characters and an intriguing story.

Cressida Tarbut is a wild life rescue ranger (is ranger the word I need? Anyways, she rescues wildlife) which has unsociable hours, doesn't pay much, comes with lots of bites and scratches, but lets her feel warm and heroic and she seems to genuinely like her job. When her friend, an energetic human whirlwind called Ivo, asks her to come and rescue a red squirrel, she goes out on the moors to do so.
Except this squirrel has been found in the pocket of a dead man. Cressida realises that the squirrel (nicknamed Fred) has been hand reared.
The police think that the man's death was an accident, but Ivo wants it to be a bigger mystery that needs unpicking. Cressida would like to get Fred back to his home ... and an excuse to spend more time with Ivo is always welcome. So they embark on an adventure which turns out to be far more eventful than either of them (or Fred, presumably) anticipated.
Cressida is in love with Ivo from the start of the book, but they've known each other for years and she's pretty sure he's not interested in her. So a lot of the romantic tension comes from her trying to work out what he means with some of the things he says and does. Their backgrounds are vastly different too - she has very little money, whereas he's from a posh and monied background.
Ivo was really sweet and definitely quirky. It was nice to read about a hero who is not neurotypical. I also liked that he didn't dislike himself because of it. In fact, it was part of who he was and he wouldn't have it any other way.
As always with Jane Lovering's books, this book was funny. It made me chuckle out loud several times.
I got an advance review copy through Netgalley (thank you, Boldwood).

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, given to me by Boldwood Books via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A very special, multi-layered, complex, unexpected hero, depicted in a slow, gradual, a bit suspenseful way, steals the show in “One of a Kind”, by Jane Lovering, a story about secret crushes, friends becoming lovers, and dealing with difference.
Ivo is such an intriguing, nuanced and fascinating lead. I loved how the author showed and explained, through Ivo himself, what is living with this condition, and its repercussions in daily life and interactions.
I adored how the tendency for a certain comedy and extravagancy we watch in the character – the peculiar wardrobe, for example – the dialogue, process of thinking, gestures, gesticulating and all sort of mannerism converge to create a complex, multifaceted male lead.
Jane Lovering shows the full extent of Ivo’s issues and how full of life, intelligent, thoughtful and sensitive he is – in his very peculiar and accelerated way.
Ivo’s characterization is top-notch. I guessed the issue but loved being kept in the dark (and then fully informed).
The fondness and affection between the leads is endearing. The story is full of awkward and fun moments that made me laugh.
I liked Cress, too, and how she finally overcame her insecurities. I felt she was a bit puerile about the events going on.
The portrayal of wildlife volunteering and working makes us respect these people and the animals a lot more.

My Opinion

I enjoy reading Jane Lovering's book, this one especially as I like books that are set in an area I am familiar with. This was a relatively quick read and when I had to put the book down I felt the urge to return.

Whilst there is the familiar writing style of Lovering, this book felt different - there was a mystery aspect as well the expected romance. With the discovery of a red squirrel, this makes for an interesting read.

Be prepared for a slowish start – well, apart from the fact that it starts with the discovery of a dead man, identity unknown, on the Yorkshire moors. Oh yes, and he just happens to have a very friendly red squirrel in his pocket.

So Cress, wildlife rescuer, is the obvious person to call – she’s been a friend of on-the-spot reporter Ivo since their university days, although she really wishes (well maybe…) that they could be something rather more. Their lives are very different – he lives in luxury in the gatehouse of the family pile, Cress keeps head above water with the help of a couple of lodgers – and when he suggests she moves in for a while, until they sort out what to do with the squirrel (working name Fred…), it’s a bit of a no-brainer.

And what then follows for a while, in the author’s inimitable style, is the progress of their relationship, with plenty of the sparkling dialogue she does so very well, and a lot of inner turmoil from love-lorn Cress. And then there’s Ivo – a particularly flamboyant dresser, totally exhausting to be around, never stops moving or talking, changes the subject mid-sentence, acts on impulse, and entirely loveable in his own quirky and neuro-diverse way.

But that’s not all the story – together they decide to conduct their own investigation into what’s begun to look like a murder rather than an unexplained death, and that takes them on a road trip to the Isle of Wight, both to take Fred home and to dig a little deeper. And if the early part of the book was slower moving (and no complaints from me – I loved it!), the pace certainly picks up dramatically and the whole book moves into edge-of-the-seat thriller territory, albeit with plenty of laughs along the way and some distinct progress on the romantic front.

This book is very, very different – with everything I enjoy about the author’s writing, but with plenty of added extras. The events that unfold on the IoW are written quite wonderfully, making it a real page turner, and I really loved Cress’ distinctive voice and wry humour when faced with… well, with the possibility of it being the end of everything really. And the developing relationship between her and Ivo was, to quote the publishers, “utterly beautiful” – amid all their challenges and baggage and issues and differences, they’re a couple who are really meant to be together. As always, a total delight.

A short book which started off with a bang, but, half-way through seemed to slow down and got really boring. I usually really enjoy Jane's books but this one didn't hit the mark. Jane Lovering is a great favourite of mine so I was excited to get the opportunity to read her latest book One of Kind which was published by Boldwood Books on Thursday 13th June. Thank you to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for the invitation to take part in the book tour and to the publisher for a digital review copy through Netgalley.

This book had a different feel to the author’s previous novels with a focus on solving a mystery as well as a romance. However, it still had what I think of as Jane Lovering’s trademarks: quirky characters, cute animals, warm humour and a gently unfolding romance. Cressida, known as Cress, works at an animal rescue centre and has been secretly in love with journalist Ivo since they met at university. He seems completely oblivious to this attraction and she is reluctantly content to settle for friendship. When he calls her early one morning to come and rescue a red squirrel he has found in a dead man’s pocket, the scene is set for an adventure.

Now if you know anything about red squirrels you will know that they are relatively rare and only to be found in small areas of the UK which doesn’t include Yorkshire. So the first mystery is how did this little chap come to be on a Yorkshire moor and in a dead man’s pocket? Ivo wants to investigate to find out who the man is and where he’s from so naturally they decide to try find out first where the squirrel is from by getting a sample of its DNA assessed! This led the pair to the Isle of Wight and what seemed to be a jolly trip soon turned into a rather dangerous mission far from home.

Jane Lovering gives an interesting insight into the life of an animal welfare worker. I confess I had envisaged the work mostly to be about rescuing wounding or neglected animals, giving them lots of cuddles and tlc and then either finding them a lovely new home or seeing them back into the wild. All very rewarding. Now I know a lot more about how there’s a lot of paperwork, it’s a constant struggle to raise funds and that there’s a lot of shovelling. No, not grovelling – shovelling!

I enjoyed the romance between Cress and Ivo although was frustrated with him at times that he couldn’t see that she wanted to be more than friends. I could understand why Cress didn’t want to say anything in case that risked their friendship. They were very different in many ways not least their finances. Cress was rather insecure and didn’t think that vibrant Ivo could ever see her in a romantic light and I think that many people will identify with her lack of confidence. It was interesting to find that Ivo has ADHD which explained his personality and quirky traits. I’m not neurodivergent myself so I felt this gave a good insight into what life can be like for neurodivergent people.

As I said at the beginning, this novel had a different feel from the author’s previous novels which perhaps focus more on the main female character’s personal situations and search for love. However, I still enjoyed this funny and warm story of squirrels, mystery and love. And that’s not a sentence you see very often!

When a dead body is discovered on Yorkshire moors, Cressida and Ivo band together to try and solve the mystery. Friends since uni, even though their personalities and upbringing couldn’t be more different, Cress and Ivo embark on a journey that is equally about crime solving as it is about getting to know each other better.

Having never read a book by Jane Lovering before, I didn’t know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by a great mixture of cozy mystery and romance this book provided. I loved the two main characters, who felt fleshed out and real, and I especially loved the ADHD rep the book offered. The pacing did lag a bit towards the middle and I did want a deeper dive into Ivo’s feelings towards Cress as they seemingly came from nowhere at one point. But ultimately I loved the message of loving someone, not despite, but because of their flaws. So if you’re a fan of atmospheric books that blend mystery and romance and are filled with humor, this might be perfect for you.

It was OK and would give it 2.5 stars. I usually love Jane Lovering's books and always look forward to reading them. Unfortunately, this one fell flat for me and I wasn't really invested in either character. I thought it would be more about Cress and her work with animals. There was only one animal, Fred, a cute little Red Squirrel. We only saw Fred when Cress was putting him in or out of a cage. I would have been holding and cuddling him. It's hard to resist such an adorable, furry critter. Ivo and Cress are a whole other matter. It was tiring with all the back and forth between them. They did so much talking without saying much and rehashed the same stuff over and over. Ivo has ADHD, not cancer. I really don't know what the problem was and it all seemed ridiculous. It wasn't until the book was nearly over that it got interesting and stuff started to happen. Cress and Ivo wanted to solve the mystery behind the squirrel. More time could have been spent on what was actually going on with the squirrels than Cress and Ivo. When the truth about Fred was finally revealed, I didn't know what to think. It all happened so fast and seemed a bit anticlimactic. The ending was rushed. There could have been more about the squirrel rescue and everyone involved.

Definitely recommend giving the book a try, it just wasn't for me. I didn't hate the story, just didn't love it like the previous books. Not sure if this was supposed to be a mystery or a weird love story. Look forward to reading more books by the author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Boldwood Books, through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I usually adore Jane Lovering stories and characters but I found myself just liking this one unfortunately.

I couldn't understand how Ivo could be Cress best friend who she was secretly madly in love with yet could have deep suspicions about. Surely, even without the knowledge of his personal challenges she would have a fundamental understanding of the person he was and what he was or wasn't capable of?

None the less I enjoyed the story and laughed out loud at some of the situations the MCs found themselves in.

The author wrote about adhd as if the character had some reason to be pittied and the main heroine had no idea it was a thing. It was just so off putting. The story was ridiculous and I probably won’t be reading more by Jane any time soon

Cressida Tarbet was trying to sleep off a nasty cold when her phone rang. Her best friend, Ivo, needed wildlife rescuer, Cress at a possible crime scene on the Yorkshire moors. The victim had something unusual in his pocket that Cressida would undoubtedly be interested in. The police seemed to think it was an accidental death but Ivo wasn’t convinced. Cressida couldn’t resist Ivo’s pleading, despite the years they’d been the best of friends and her secret but nonetheless confusing and conflicting feelings she harboured for him, she was curious to know what had prompted Ivo to call her. She couldn’t have been more surprised.

Ivo dreamed of being a successful investigative journalist and thought this would be the perfect opportunity for a story. Cressida wasn’t so sure but first and foremost she was here in her role as animal rescuer.

'Prepared to initiate emergency measures should it panic, I touched it, very gently with the tip of my finger. A head emerged and a beady eye rolled upward, then, in a flash of auburn, the little creature had fled into my nicely enclosed, dark and safe-looking transport box and I closed the door behind it with relief.'

Getting the cute little rescue back where he belongs takes Cressida and Ivo down south, also to the Isle of Wight and, since they decided to try and investigate what Ivo is certain is nefarious goings on, into danger. They have no idea what they’re getting themselves involved in.

One of a Kind was an enjoyable read, part mystery, part (desire for) romance with two very likeable characters. Cressida and Ivo have completely different lifestyles and personalities, she supplementing her small income by taking in lodgers, he living in the opulent gatehouse of the family estate. Cressida has had lots of time to get used to Ivo’s almost extreme, excitable flitting from one subject or idea to another in the blink of an eye and I appreciated the author explaining his thought processes from his own perspective. I enjoyed the insight into animal rescue too.

One of a Kind by Jane Lovering
A long-held secret and a beautiful heart hoping to be understood.
Cressida Tarbet loves her job at an animal rescue centre, even if it means she's resigned to scrimping to make ends meet—a lifestyle far removed from her best friend Ivo's, in his ancestral gatehouse stuffed with antiques and art.
But although their upbringings are different, Ivo has held Cress's heart ever since she clapped eyes on him at university. The trouble is – she has never told him. So, when a mystery and a baffling crime throw Cress and Ivo together, she can't help but wonder if fate is telling her something.
The pair get closer as the puzzle takes them from beautiful Yorkshire to the stunning Isle of Wight. Ivo begins to understand the cause of Cress's risk aversion, and she puts her irritation at his brilliant mind on one side as she starts to appreciate Ivo's uniqueness. But when the unthinkable happens, and their worlds are turned upside down, Cress wonders if fate is calling.
The story commences with the discovery of a dead man on the Yorkshire moors who happens to have a live red squirrel in his pocket. He has no ID, and the squirrel is far from its natural habitat.
This is where we are introduced to Ivo and Cress for the first time. Ivo is the reporter at the scene, and the first person he calls is his best friend, Cress, as she will know what to do about the squirrel as a wildlife rescuer as it is causing mayhem on the site.
Together, they decide to run their own investigation to uncover the mystery.
As the story progresses, we learn about both characters' histories and their present-day situations.
It is a unique, well-written story that is uplifting, emotional, and humorous—well worth reading.
Thanks to publishers Boldwood Books, author Jane Lovering, and Rachel's Random Resources for sending me a copy to read and review.

"I can't be like other people, but actually I like who I am."

"That's relationships...You take care of each other. I want to take care of you...Within defined parameters, of course."

Reading the endearing quirky cozy mystery romance, One Of A Kind, by prolific author Jane Lovering, can give your brain whiplash. One minute you're feeling and the next giggling over the banter.

Cress is a low risk person. Working for an animal rescue, she struggles financially but likes her quiet life. But with frantic BFF Ivo her life is never simple; not to mention her hidden resentment for his generational wealth and her years-long secret crush on him.

When Ivo calls her to help rescue a rare red squirrel he fails to mention it was found in the pocket of a dead man...a murdered dead man. Despite her best efforts, Cress is pulled into Ivo's need to solve where Fred, the squirrel, came from...oh and who murdered the dead man near his home.

Their adventures lead to romance but Cress is hesitant not understanding that Ivo is not just hyper but actually neurodivergent, coping with ADHD.
He reminded me of the British version of Monk. "My brain doesn't work like yours. I get fixated on details. When I've got focus...I can see details and patterns, that nobody else would notice."

I appreciated that the writer also wrote how hard it is for Ivo at times. Not liking how the meds make him feel, but he'll take them for Cress. How he knows he's, "an annoying person."

Cress is insecure but her inner voice is often hilarious. Her names for the bad guys are Mr. Polite and Mr Thug, for the cops it's Bored Constable and Irritated Sergeant. A bit slow to start, the last half is the story. I could easily see this one of a kind couple on BritBoxtv.

I received a free copy of this book from Boldwood Books via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

a delightful blend of mystery, romance, and self-discovery that leaves readers utterly captivated from start to finish. At its heart, this novel is a story about long-held secrets and the courage it takes to reveal one's true feelings.

The protagonist, Cressida Tarbet, is a woman who finds solace and purpose in her work at an animal rescue center, despite struggling to make ends meet. Her contrasting lifestyle to that of her best friend Ivo, who resides in a world of privilege and opulence, adds an interesting dynamic to their relationship. From the moment Cress laid eyes on Ivo at university, her heart belonged to him, yet she has never found the courage to confess her feelings.

When a mystery unfolds, intertwining their lives and leading them on a journey from the picturesque landscapes of Yorkshire to the stunning Isle of Wight, Cress and Ivo find themselves drawn closer together. As they work to unravel the puzzle before them, they also unravel the layers of their own emotions and vulnerabilities. Through moments of tension, laughter, and unexpected twists, Cress begins to understand Ivo's unique perspective, while Ivo discovers the depth of Cress's resilience and compassion.

Lovering's storytelling is both tender and compelling, skillfully weaving together elements of romance and suspense to keep readers eagerly turning the pages. The characters are vividly portrayed, each with their own quirks and complexities, making them feel like old friends by the end of the tale.

As the narrative unfolds, so too does the emotional journey of the characters, culminating in a poignant climax that will leave readers breathless. "One of a Kind" is a testament to the power of love, friendship, and the courage to embrace one's true self, making it a must-read for fans of heartfelt romance and captivating mysteries alike.

Cress and Ivo are two delightful characters and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. There’s a different feel to this book and it took me a few chapters to settle in to the story. Of course, I was immediately on-board when I realised that one of the lead characters was a squirrel, affectionately named Fred.

A large part of the book examines Cress and Ivo and gradually more and more is revealed until their characters and flaws become obvious to the reader. Of course, this is a spoiler free review, so you’ll need to read the book to discover more about that.

I definitely identified with Cress and her humble beginnings. Her backstory saddened me but she was victorious in her battle to overcome adversity. Even though she didn’t live in the same level of luxury as Ivo, she had the security of her own four walls. Despite her deep feelings for Ivo, letting him know about her attraction to him was a risk too far. I think many of us have harboured those sentiments.

I really don’t want to reveal too much about Ivo other than the reference in the synopsis to him being one-of-a-kind. I found him to be someone that I would be drawn to and loved his individuality although his dress sense would definitely bother me.

There’s no question that this is a love story and the attraction between Cress and Ivo gathers pace like a landslide and proves to be well worth the wait. There’s definitely an impressive, thrilling storyline that emerges from the pages and I was captivated as it became obvious that there was serious jeopardy to negotiate. I'm not a fan of cosy mysteries but this did sneak up on me and felt less contrived.

I’m incredibly glad that I stuck with this one as it was a thoroughly satisfying conclusion and perhaps the difficulty finding my rhythm helped me to understand a little more about Ivo. Jane certainly never fails to surprise me and I can’t wait to see where she takes me next.

I always look forward to reading Jane Lovering books and this was no exception, though there was a bit more to this one than just the usual romance. While in bed suffering with a bad cold, Cressida is called out to rescue a red squirrel by her journalist friend, Ivo. This is not unusual as she is a wildlife rescue officer, but red squirrels are not native to Yorkshire so it is a bit of a puzzle how it got there.
From totally different backgrounds, Cress and Ivo met at Cambridge university and have remained close friends ever since. Cress has been in love with Ivo since they first met, but has not told him as she is pretty sure he does not feel the same way, and she does not want it to jeopardise their friendship. This is a common trope in romance fiction and is done well here. Ivo has always been a bit eccentric, but to Cress he was just Ivo. It turns out he has ADHD but has never told anyone, until now. After this it all makes perfect sense to her.
The mystery surrounding the dead man on the moors with a squirrel hiding in his pocket is one Ivo cannot resist. Their investigation takes them to the Isle of Wight, to return the squirrel (Fred) to where he came from, and into unforeseen danger. What starts out as a romance novel, gradually becomes a tense thriller. The characters go on a physical and emotional journey, where they each have a beneficial effect on the other. The story is told entirely from Cressida’s point of view, her insecurities at the forefront, and at times her inner thoughts were a bit repetitive and took the reader out of the narrative. Ivo is an endearing character, though his dress sense leaves a lot to be desired. I enjoyed One of a Kind, though I thought the ending was a bit rushed, and I look forward to whatever Jane Lovering writes next. Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.

Jane Lovering’s One of a Kind is a witty, emotional, heart-rending and mesmerizing tale about the ties that bind, unrequited love and taking chances readers will find impossible to resist.

Despite of the vast social chasm that divides them, Cressida and Ivo are the best of friends. While Cressida cannot remember a time in her life when she wasn’t scrimping or saving, Ivo lives in an ancestral home cluttered with priceless antiques. The two of them have been friends since meeting at university, but Cressida has a secret that she daren’t reveal to everyone – not even to Ivo: she’s been head over heels in love with him for years.

When a mystery plunges the two of them even closer together, Cressida wonders whether the universe is telling her to stop burying her feelings for Ivo and reveal the depth of her affection for him. As this puzzle takes them all the way to the Isle of Wight, they begin to get closer and closer and as they begin to understand each other more, they wonder whether they dare take their friendship to the next level. But when the unthinkable happens, will Cressida and Ivo fight for their right to be happy? Or will they end up losing their friendship and the future together they had hoped for?

Jane Lovering could write a shopping list and make it laugh out loud funny and heart-breakingly emotional and she is at her absolute best with One of a Kind. An enjoyable and captivating read set against a vividly described background, One of a Kind is a gorgeous page-turner infused with warmth, intensity, magic and humour readers will want to recommend to all of their friends and family.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC of this story, this is my objective review. Cress is a wildlife rescue worker and is close friends with Ivo, a local reporter. Very opposites attract, Cress is practical and grounded and an over-thinker, Ivo is flamboyant and a bit flighty and scattered. Cress is nursing a huge crush on Ivo, and she has convinced herself that she must quash what has to be unrequited feelings. These are two close friends who maybe don't know each other quite as well as they thought, and who must deal with the effects of their changing relationship. Equal parts romance and mystery, Cress and Ivo find themselves working closely to solve a mystery involving a dead man and a squirrel named Fred, which is an overly simplistic way of describing this book but I don't want to give anything away. It's no spoiler that Fred is adorable, though.

The story is first person POV from Cress's perspective. Cress is an over-thinker and full of self-doubt, and Ivo is charming and neurodivergent. Cress is both keenly introspective and at other times extremely clueless, which I guess is somewhat true of us all. There were times I found her inner thoughts about Ivo to be a bit frustrating, especially when she was questioning his trustworthiness. Maybe it was just her questioning her own feelings, which she did a lot, that was a bit frustrating for me, I don't know. Her angst levels took me out of the story a little from time to time but I did like the story overall. Nice comedic notes. Also, I hope you love Fred as much as I did! New-to-me author but I enjoyed this one enough that I would read her again.

When a tame red squirrel is found in the pocket of an anonymous dead man in Yorkshire this sparks the interest of Ivo, a journalist. He enlists the help of his friend Cressida who works at an animal rescue centre to find the identity of the mystery man and how this red squirrel came to be miles from its nearest habitat.
When I first started reading this book I thought that it was the second in a series, however this isn't the case and their relationship is explained, although more information is gradually revealed as the story develops. Ivo is what would have been called "eccentric" in both his manner and attire - his description brings to mind for me at least (being of a mature age) of Peter Wyngarde as he appeared in the early 70s TV series "Jason King", albeit without the moustache. There is the mystery side of the story, which reaches its climax on the Isle of Wight, but also the friendship / romance between Ivo and Cressida. The reason for Ivo's mannerisms is explained and I thought that this side of his character was very carefully brought out, plus Cressida's aversion to risk. A very readable story, especially for me as I can see the Isle of Wight from my house across the Solent.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.

In this fun fiction novel, readers travel to rural Yorkshire where Cressida Tarbet runs an animal rescue center and spends time with her friend Ivo, an art and antiques collector. Despite their differences, Cressida has had a secret, unrequited crush on Ivo since college, and nothing seems to happen between them until a strange death happens in their village. United in their attempt to solve this mysterious crime, Cress and Ivo travel across England to the Isle of Wight to discover the truth behind this crime and death, but along the way they discover secrets about the other that will transform their relationship. Nothing is as it seems here, and readers will experience this fascinating mystery and romance with Ivo and Cress in Lovering’s latest novel. Cress and Ivo are wonderful characters with a fascinating and unique relationship, and Lovering brings them and their differences in personality to life in this novel. Their relationship is genuine and realistic, making the novel relatable to readers, and the balance of romance and friendship is particularly enjoyable to experience. With a fascinating plot, wonderful characters, and a cozy rural setting, this mystery and romance novel is a fun read for those looking to escape to rural Yorkshire.

Cress and Ivo met at university eight years ago. She works in an animal sanctuary as a wildlife rescue person.
Her feelings for Ivo are more than a friendship, feelings that she denied as hard as she can, she wouldn’t act on them for fear of ruining their lovely friendship.
She owns a two-bedroom cottage and rents the spare room to Lilith and Dix.
Ivo is a reporter, he has a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics and works in a local newspaper covering boring stories.
One day when she is sick with the flu and receives a phone call from Ivo, who needs her help with an animal rescue, an unexpected event unveils. Ivo found a mystery body on a moor with a red squirrel in his pocket.
Together they are on a mission to discover the truth, where the animal came from (rare to the area) and what happened to the dead man.
During the amateur investigation, they discover something else, an unexpected mutual feeling for each other.
I loved reading about the life of people working in the wild animal rescue field, as an animal lover I appreciate what they do.

The majority of this story takes place on the Isle of Wight and the sea and the coastline play an important role in the plot. Cressida and Ivo are an interesting pair as they seem quite different on the surface. Cressida has opted for a steady role in animal rescue, whilst her University friend Ivo has a more flamboyant approach to life and is an investigative journalist. They make a great team. As the story evolves, you understand more about Ivo and what makes him tick. Coming from an affluent family, his attitude to his possessions is quite different to Cressida who has had a much more simple upbringing with her single mother. However, as you discover, there is more to her background than meets the eye.

Although romance is very much on Cressida's mind for the whole of the story, most of the time I felt that this book had a strong feeling of being a cozy crime story. There is quite a mystery to unravel. I enjoyed the book very much, principally because of the relationships and the characters who kept up the pace of the narrative. It is an entertaining read with sparky dialogue and plenty of humour.

In short: warm, entertaining read

Cressida Tarbet loves her job at an animal rescue centre but she has to scrimp to make ends meet. Meanwhile, her best friend Ivo lives in his ancestral gatehouse stuffed with antiques and art. Despite their different upbringings, Ivo has held Cress’s heart ever since she met him at university but she has never told him so. So, when a mystery and a baffling crime throw Cress and Ivo together, she can’t help but wonder if fate is telling her something. They grow closer as their work takes them on an adventure across the English countryside, with Ivo finally understanding the cause of Cress’s risk-aversion. Likewise, Cress starts to appreciate Ivo’s uniqueness.
This was a sweet story highlighting the love between two friends that grows as they begin to see each other from another perspective. I found the awkward moments and their idiosyncrasies endearing. However, the mystery behind the crime was not quite the story that I thought it could be.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really wanted to like this book. It had potential! There are some unresolved character stories mentioned in passing that could have been explored that might have been interesting. But no, instead we have the male equivalent of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl who’s just constantly running around being quirky for the sake of being quirky. Why does she even like him? I’ve read the whole thing and I have no idea. She seems to know him so little that she distrusts him to ridiculous degrees. This is your great love but you think these horrible things about him? And apparently she’s known him for years and doesn’t immediately recognize ADHD? Is he really the ONLY one she knows that has it? She has NO idea he has it and it’s probably a spoiler but dear god only if you live under a rock and didn’t immediately realize it within the first few sentences. Also, why does he like her? What made them friends? Not a clue on that either because he has zero depth except for “this is the quirky way my brain works!!!” (and an odd taste in old clothes? Why?).

When I began reading One of a Kind I expected a typical well-written, focused Jane Lovering story. This was not that.

While it started off with a bang, the discovery of a man's body with a squirrel in his pocket, an endangered red squirrel, at that, it didn't continue in that mode. Instead, the storytelling meandered with Cress constantly analyzing Ivo and her feelings for him. Initially Ivo came off badly and I wondered why she was so fascinated with him. His looks, I deduced, although his penchant for dressing like a 70's disco clubber had me doubting.

The middle, unfortunately bored me so that I ended up reading three other books, and may have declared this one a DNF. I might finish just to see if there is an end to the mystery but I don't know if I'm that intrigued.

Hope this is a one off because I normally love Jane's books.

Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy.
