Warwick & Bell #4

Murder on a Country Walk

Rate this book
It begins as a Halloween prank. It ends in cold-blooded murder.

Halloween. One of the busiest nights of the year for Lincolnshire police. Special Constable Jane Bell is called out to reports of someone in a Dracula mask terrorising the residents of a nearby estate with a fake knife. She races to the scene — but the man in the mask flees into the night.

The next morning, Detective Steph Warwick turns up on Jane’s doorstep. There’s been a murder. Dracula went on to attack two women, retired schoolteacher Susan Gedney and her daughter Gina. Susan died at the scene, Gina survived. The knife turned out to be all too real.

Then another young woman disappears from the picturesque village where Susan and Gina lived. She was last seen out on a country walk — but she never returned.

Three women targeted from the same small village. This is no coincidence.

We were chasing Dracula when it happened.

Just imagine trying to find a murderer dressed as Dracula on Halloween night. There are reports of someone dressed as a vampire who is knocking on doors, waving a big knife, and then running away. Not to mention there's a party going on in that exact area, where the attendees are all dressed as vampires! This turns out to be the tip of the iceberg ... and then it's hang-on-to-your-hat-time, navigating all of the twists and turns in Murder on a Country Walk!

What a great book! I like all of the characters. Special Constable Jane Bell is managing to find happiness again. I especially love Detective Sergeant Elias Harper, who is slowly, slowly, rounding the sharp edges of DI Stephanie Warwick's personality.

My only wish is for the characters to more consistently be referred to by their first or last names. I felt as though I had made my way through half the book when suddenly someone was referred to as Harper. I thought "Who?? Ah, yes. The same character referred to as Elias in half the book." (Then again, maybe it's an old age thing on my part, haha.)

Anyway, I recommend Murder on a Country Walk and believe it can be read as a standalone!

Many thanks to both #JoffeBooks and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of #MurderOnACountryWalk. This book is #4 in the #WarwickAndBell series and the expected publication date is April 2, 2024.

I had part of the plot figured out early on in Murder on a Country Walk by Janice Frost. I felt the characters had superficial relationships and it was hard to connect with any of them.

Overall, an okay read for me. I might read more by this author and in this series. The overall story was interesting, I just had difficulty connecting with the characters.

The story revolves around greed and money at the root of the plot, which gets kind of old in stories.

I rate this a 3.75 out of 5 stars (rounded to 4).

This is book 4 in the brilliant Warwick and Bell series but would work perfectly as stand alone.

A woman is murdered on Halloween night. The murderer is dressed as dracula and is seen running away by SC Bell. There are plenty of Draculas around and he gets away. As the murder investigation gets under way it soon becomes clear that this is going to be a hard case to crack with secrets and lies tangled up with suspected historical abuse but Warwick isn't one to give up and keeps on digging until she gets the answers.

I really like this series it is unusual for a Special Constable to be a main character in a detective novel and I love the personality clash between the 2 women and also how Bell manages to get answers the main Police dept can't much to the annoyance of Warwick. The book is both amusing and suspenseful and makes for a very enjoyable read.

Absolutely loved this story and I can't wait for the next book

Another winner from #joffebooks, I loved #murderonacountrywalk by @janicefrostauthor. These are great characters, and I love the multiple POV. It also is striking how we get such bucolic scenes, descriptions of food, quaint coffee houses interspersed with gruesome scenes of murder. By a vampire, no less. Very well done, with intricate plotting...I highly recommend this, and the entire Warwick & Bell series.

P.S. Thanks to #netgalley and @joffebooks for the ARC.

Special Constable Jane Bell helps and supports DI
Warwick to a murder that happened on Halloween night. DI Warwick has her own personal issues that she's dealing with but manages to nail the murderer.

Jane Bell should be promoted to the detective team with DI Warwick

I really enjoyed reading this book gripping from start to finish, filled with mystery with lot of crazy twists and turns and unputdownable. So much suspense and intriguing.

Murder On A Country Walk by Janice Frost is a gripping murder mystery set in a small village on Halloween night. Amidst the celebration and festivities, a Dracula costumed figure terrorizes the villagers, wielding a bloody knife and eventually attacking a mother and daughter. As the body count rises and the killer remains at large, the question on everyone's mind is who is behind these heinous crimes and what is their motive?
The story follows Gina and her mother Susan, who are the victims of the attacker's brutal violence. As the village is thrown into chaos and fear, the police and villagers alike are desperate to catch the killer before they strike again. The suspense is reminiscent of a classic Midsomer Murders episode, keeping readers on the edge of their seats and guessing until the very end.
Frost's writing is engaging and keeps the reader hooked from start to finish. The characters are well-developed and the setting of the small village adds to the eerie atmosphere of the story. As the plot unfolds, clues are slowly revealed, leading readers down a path of twists and turns that ultimately lead to a shocking reveal.
Overall, Murder On A Country Walk is a fast-paced, suspenseful read that will keep readers guessing until the very end. With well-crafted characters and a cleverly plotted mystery, this book is a must-read for fans of classic murder mysteries.

This is a tale of a Halloween prank that goes wrong. A retired school teacher and her daughter are out together and they get attacked, leaving the mother dead and her daughter injured. Surely, it was just a prank. When another young girl goes missing in the village, the likelihood of this being “ one off”are slim and it’s up to the police to investigate further.

As usual special Constable Jane Bell is eager to find out more, despite warnings from D I Stephanie Warwick not to interfere! She is a terrible busybody and she irks Steph because she doesn’t listen or rather she interprets her orders her own way. Saying that I do like Jane, but she needs to rein her self in in order to win over Steph. I think Elias has her back and in a way he’s quite fond of her.

Steph is her usual acerbic self, doesn’t give much praise or thanks for the help she gets and generally puts folks backs up.

There are some other rather odd characters thrown in and I takes for a brilliant read. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the sparring between the two women was quite comical.

This is the fourth book in the series, and you need to read the previous ones to get an idea of what’s gone on before.

My thanks to the author and Joffe Publishers for the ARC.

I hope Janice is going to write some more, as I’d love Bell to become a proper policewoman.

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
This is a fun read with an excellent mystery that was peopled with many of the same characters I already knew. It's an enjoyable series.
Special Policewoman Jane Bell is still as keen as mustard, worrying DI Steph Warwick who's always afraid Jane will go rogue. Of course Jane can't help herself, but she comes up trumps and earns
Steph's reluctant admiration in the end! Good stuff!

What a delightful book and I am so sorry the story came to an end. I could have gone on for hours reading about the ups and downs of these people, and I sincerely hope this does not mean a final goodbye to Jane Bell, Ed and Steph.

I have not read the previous volumes, but I did not feel I was missing anything.
I am quite familiar with the area in which this cosy mystery is set.
The story has an unusual theme: it all begins on 31 October, Halloween.
Dovesby, in the rural Lincoln Wolds, is preparing for its annual Halloween party, Special Constable Jan Bell and her partner Tim are on duty, the three self-catering cottages have been let and new tenants have moved into the majestic Tornally Hall, a large estate on the outskirts of the town.

When a mother and daughter are stabbed by 'Dracula' on Halloween night, the rustic town is thrown into turmoil. The daughter, Gina, survives the attack, but the mother succumbs to her injuries.Soon after, a walker is found not having returned from a long walk; she had rented one of the cottages to work on her dissertation in peace.

Jane is called in by DI Steph Walker as the town's 'eyes and ears'. She is asked to help solve both murders.

I grew very fond of Jane during the course of the story. She is a widow in her mid-forties, a bit headstrong and, in my eyes, a younger version of Miss Marple, with a 'Vera' approach (TV series of the same name).
She inadvertently sticks her nose into everything, sometimes with dramatic consequences, and often against the grain of 'Steph', who thinks she is a loose cannon. However, her incisive attitude speeds up the investigation into the murders of the two women.

I really liked the reference to one of my all time favourite TV shows, although the younger generation won't have any idea who 'Steed' (Patrick O'Neill) was… (- The Avengers - with ‘Emma Peel’- amazing series!)

Despite her rather blunt attitude, I found 'Steph' to be one of the most interesting protagonists in the story, alongside Jane Belle.
The other members of her team don't really know how to deal with Steph as she can come off as rather blunt, and stingy with compliments, albeit they do respect her for her work ethic and expertise.
From the beginning I wondered why she is the way she is. In the end, she shares what she has always struggled with and opens up. I somehow found that very moving. Some people wear a mask to hide the pain they carry. Sometimes it is what we go through that makes us who we are.
That includes Gina, of course - who lost her mother in the knife attack on Halloween, but hers is a different kind of story…
Great setting, with interesting characters, village gossip, people who mean well but don't know how and yet others who hide their true nature but have little good in store.

I really hope to see these people again, because for me, their story is not finished yet!

Highly recommended - 5 stars!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for an advance copy of Murder on a Country Walk, the fourth novel to feature DI Steph Warwick and Special Constable Jane Bell of Lincolnshire Police.

On Halloween night Jane and her partner are asked to investigate reports of a masked Dracula waving a knife about, but he escapes after a chase. The next morning DI Warwick and DS Elias want the full details from her as an hour later a woman was murdered and her daughter injured by a mask wearing Dracula. Jane is Doveby where the murder victim lived visiting her boyfriend when a young woman disappears.

I enjoyed Murder on a Country Walk, which has an absorbing plot and a few twists to keep the reader guessing. It is mostly told from Warwick and Bell’s points of view with little to no input from the perpetrator and that suits me just fine. I like the concentration on the investigation and the mystery of guessing who did what and how the pieces fit together. I got some of it, but not enough to claim victory as it ends up quite complicated.

It is a novel of contrasts in style. Warwick is a demanding boss who thrives on detail and proper procedure, while Bell is basically nosy in a good way, wanting to ferret out those details for Warwick, with an unhealthy disregard for personal safety and procedure. To be kind it’s over enthusiasm, to be realistic it’s recklessness on Bell’s part while Warwick is dedicated or really poor at interpersonal relations. They are probably a mixture of both.

The plot goes this way and that. The daughter, Gina Gedney, quickly catches Warwick’s eye as a suspect in her mother’s murder so the team spend a lot of time examining her life. There are surprises and a certain amount of ambiguity involved, while the disappearance of Bree Fawcett takes them in another direction. I don’t think that the novel is particularly fast moving, but there’s always something to keep the reader occupied and speculating.

Murder on a Country Walk is a good read that I can recommend.

Special Constable Jane Bell and her partner DC Tim Sterne are on patrol in Lincoln as the Halloween celebrations are in full swing. When reports come in of a Dracula lookalike brandishing a knife, the pair give chase when they spot him but soon have to give up when Tim suffers a heart attack. Fortunately he is saved by the paramedics but other officers in the area lose the suspect. Jane hopes it was a harmless prank but soon discovers otherwise when she hears two women from Doveby, the village where Jane’s blacksmith partner Ed lives, have been attacked by the same man whilst visiting Lincoln. The mother has died whilst the daughter has escaped with minor injuries. Surely just a random attack? DI Steph Warwick and her partner DS Elias Harper are in charge of the case and knowing Jane’s propensity to get involved in other people’s investigations, Steph tells her to keep clear but maybe she could glean a little local knowledge of the victims whilst visiting Ed’s home. Jane jumps at the chance and wastes no time in seeking out the gossip! Then a woman staying in a holiday cottage in the same village goes missing and Steph and Elias wonder if there could be a link to the previous attack, especially when they have another body on their hands. With Steph heading up two murder cases and Jane perfectly placed for some undercover snooping, will the pair be able to work together to solve these strange crimes?
Jane is instantly likeable, the sort of woman you’d want for your best friend. Steph, due to her past trauma which is explained in this story, is brittle and much harder to get to know but has herself, with help from Elias, been making more of an effort with people lately. This is an excellent police procedural with some great characters, my favourite being the calm and steady Elias with his love of amateur dramatics who is superbly empathetic and an absolute rock for Steph. The plot is well laid out and very twisty, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. 4.5*

Jane Bell is hoping for a quiet Halloween as she patrols the streets. But a call out concerning a Dracula brandishing a knife leads to a chase that is halted when her partner collapses and almost dies. The next morning Jane is devastated to be informed that the escaped Dracula went on to stab two women...
Murder on a Country Walk is the 4th police procedural book to feature Special Constable Jane Bell and her colleague DI Steph Warwick.
It's a dramatic start to the book as Jane and her partner race after Dracula. The likelihood is that the knife is fake but they have to pursue the suspect. Jane is horrified as her partner crumples to the floor with a heart attack and the chase is abandoned. Shortly afterwards two women are attacked on the street and one is repeatedly stabbed to death in front of her daughter. Jane feels guilty that she couldn't catch the killer and resolves to investigate by staying with her partner in the village where the two women lived. She uncovers a host of secrets and motives, and more death follows...
I felt a little lost at the start of the book as we are introduced to a range of characters and the connections and relevance isn't immediately clear. The murder case then begins and Jane starts to gather background information about the victim. The plot shifts focus when another character, seemingly unconnected, disappears from the village and Jane wonders if there is a link between the cases.
Jane and Steph continue to have an uneasy working relationship. Both are utterly committed to their police work but the difference in rank and responsibility leads to tension. Jane is a bit nosy and oversteps her role, treading on Steph's toes. But Steph needs Jane's insight and easy going manner which helps others confide in her.
Murder on a Country Walk is an enjoyable police procedural with strong lead characters.

Warwick and Bell #4

Halloween. One of the most busiest nights of the year for Lincolnshire police. Special Constable Jane Bell is called to reports of someone in a Dracula mask terrorising residents of a nearby estate with a replica knife. She makes to the scene - but the man in the mask flees into the night. The next morning, Detective Steph Warwick turns up on Jane's doorstep. There's been a murder. Dracula went on to attack two women, retired schoolteacher Susan Gedney and her daughter Gina. Susan died at the scene, Gina survived. The knife turned out to be all too real.

This is a suspense filled read with added creepiness with it being Halloween. The story is told from multiple perspectives. A Dracula masked character had been running around the village, carrying a bloodied knife. He attacks a mother and daughter, and the mother dies, and the body count rises. The characters are well-developed. I love Jane Bell, she shows how Special Constables can help the police force to perfection. There are lots of twists in this fast-paced read.

Review of “Murder on a Country Walk” by Janice Frost

Disclaimer: Please note that I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley, in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Janice Frost delivers a gripping British crime mystery that starts with a Halloween prank and spirals into a chilling murder, keeping readers hooked from start to finish as Special Constable Jane Bell and Detective Steph Warwick navigate a complex investigation.

While the story kicks off with a slew of characters, once it gains momentum, it becomes an addictive read with twists that kept me guessing until the very end. Despite the initial challenge of keeping track of numerous characters, Frost’s masterful storytelling draws you in effortlessly, making it impossible to put the book down until you’ve uncovered the truth behind the crime.

With its rich cast of characters and compelling plot, “Murder on a Country Walk” is a must-read for fans of mystery novels. I raced through this book in a single afternoon, thoroughly enjoying every twist and turn. I highly recommend it to anyone in search of a gripping murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I loved this. I think it's the best so far in the series. What starts out initially as the murder of a woman with her daughter left injured after also being stabbed at Halloween, some turns into a double murder investigation when a young woman is also murdered in the same village. Warwick, Elias and Bell have their work cut out for them getting to the bottom of things while trying to determine if these are separate or connected events.

As usual, I enjoyed the procedural part of the story but I love how Bell gets herself in the middle of everything while somehow annoying Warwick at the same time. The gradual reveal of a more vulnerable side of Warwick was excellent and I'm warming ,albeit slowly! , to her with each book. Her opening up to Elias was a more gentle moment in the story. The reveal at the end wasn't as straightforward as I was expecting, all the better for it. Looking forward to the next one.

Many thanks to Joffe Books and Netgalley for the eARC copy of this book

It's not Halloween without Dracula. In this, the fourth book in the Warwick and Bell series, Dracula is also carrying a big knife! Special Constable Jane Bell is on Halloween patrol with her partner. They're called to area of town where Dracula is seen knocking on doors, waving the knife, then taking off. They spot him but he takes off. Unfortunately Bell's partner suffers a heart attack and Bell is unable to give chase. Minutes later DI Stephanie Warwick and her team are called to a murder just streets away. The victim was attacked by Dracula wielding a large knife. Turns out this wasn't just a random attack, secrets and lies are at the root of this murder.

This series just keeps getting better and better as it grows. The relationship between Bell and Warwick is rocky but slowly improving. I highly recommend the series, and I give this book 4 stars.

I love a good mystery set in the English countryside and this one did not disappoint. A Halloween prank turns deadly and a 'volunteer' police officer (unheard of in the US!) helps to unravel the mystery, mostly by just being nosy! Though this is the fourth book in a series, I did not feel disadvantaged by not having read the previous three titles.

The main characters' perspectives are alternated throughout the book which helps in understanding why they behave the way that they do. The two main characters are just about polar opposites and their interactions are both amusing and frustrating. The friction between them adds to the suspenseful nature of the narrative. The action is fast paced and holds the reader's attention all the way to the unexpected ending.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This fourth book in the Warwick and Bell series opens with SPC Jane Bell and her partner giving chase to a person dressed as Dracula terrifying local residents during Halloween celebrations.
He manages to evade them, however the next morning Jane gets a visit.
Later that evening it seems "Dracula" carried on and attacked a mother and daughter, stabbing one of them fatally.
What ensues is a series of mysterious and unexplained events.
When another woman from the same area disappears DI Warwick takes charge of the investigation and for once allows Jane the freedom to snoop around.
A cleverly plotted mystery that kept me hooked as the clues led me through a series of twists and turns.
Thoroughly entertaining read that left me looking forward to the next outing featuring Jane and Steph.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Joffe books for letting me read this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, which, although part of a series, I feel can be read as a standalone.
This keeps you guessing as you read and has some revelations and clever twists to a well written storyline and also good strong characters.
Special Constable Jane Bell has a way of finding out unexpected information about the crimes. Much to the annoyance of DI Steph Warwick. This can often lead Jane into danger.
DI Steph Warwick is a tough, hard boss but gets along with DS Ella's Harper, who has a softer approach. They remind me of bad cop good cop in their investigating.
It's a most enjoyable book, and I do hope there are more books in this series .

This is a Warwick & Bell mystery, the fourth in the series. I haven't read any of the previous books in the series, but cosy village mysteries are a favourite of mine, and I liked the look of the cover and description, so I thought this would appeal to me.

This had the cosy quality that I was looking for, and I found it a very light, relaxing read, as well as an entertaining murder mystery. Given that part of the story takes place on Halloween, it would be a very good choice to curl up with on an autumnal evening. In fact, I may consider it as an alternative to a spooky story.

Cosy mysteries like this are a go-to type of read for me, so I would probably be interested in reading more by this author. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free copy to review.

I Love This Series

Special Constable Jane Bell is loving her job but wishes she could help out more when there is a case to be solved. DI Steph Warwick is thawing slightly towards Jane and is allowing her to do a little bit more but only under the strictest supervision which Jane always seems to stretch somewhat. It is Halloween and there is a report that someone wearing a Dracula mask and carrying a fake knife is frightening residents on a local estate. He cannot be found but then there is a report of a woman being stabbed to death and her daughter injured. With Steph in charge of the investigation it is only a matter of time before Jane becomes involved. I love this series and am already looking forward to the next book.

Murder on a country walk follows special constable Jane Bell as she helps detectives investigating murders around the Halloween celebrations. Jane is very keen and often gets on the nerves of DI Steph Warwick in her eagerness to investigate.

There are quite a few characters involved and the book jumps around between them. It’s an enjoyable read with good pacing.

The plot reveals weren’t particularly disguised but that didn’t detract from the reading.

I gave this book three and a half stars rounded up to four.

Well, I grew to like this series by the end of the second book. The characters grew and the who-done-it were good enough to pass the time. And I enjoyed the English countryside settings. This was the last in this series and while entertaining, it didn’t focus as much on Jane Bell as it did on DI Warwick (Steph). It seems to leave things open for additional books in the series but this was the last. I ordered different box set series of her books from Amazon for 0.99, can’t go wrong with that investment.

Nice simple’s stories along the lines of Father Brown or Murder She Wrote, entertaining with only light violence.

A fantastic novel from Janice Frost.

This is a twisted tale of murder that starts on Halloween, set in a small village and town.

You will read from the perspective of many different characters linked to a murder, one of which is Special Constable Jane Bell, who is a very likeable character who constantly gets herself into a pickle.

Overall, this is a very nice, easy read that will grip you from the beginning. I however did work out the plot very early on, but I did still really enjoy the book.

Two women from a small village in Lincolnshire are attacked on Halloween by a man dressed as Dracula. Then a young woman goes out for a walk in the same village and never returns. Is it a coincidence or are the cases related?

This is an interesting mystery, and hard to categorize. It’s not quite a cozy and not quite a police procedural. I enjoyed the mystery itself but unfortunately never really connected with Jane Bell, the amateur sleuth. Although there are some references to things that happened in previous books in the series this can be read as a stand alone story.

This is the first of this series that I have read and although it references previous books it is ok to read as a standalone.
Jane Bell is a special constable who likes to get involved in investigations, much to the annoyance of DI Warwick.
It is Halloween and the vampires are everywhere, one of them is reported as having killed a woman and badly injured another.
The injured woman lives in the same village as Jane’s partner Ed, so naturally she has to get involved.
Not a bad read, although it stretches belief at times.

I am loving a series which embraces the role of the Special Constable, their abilities and their contribution to policing. I also like the acknowledgement of the attitudes of some regular officers to the role of the Specials, but also particularly enjoyed the shift in understanding of DI Warwick and her eventual acceptance that Specials have a great contribution to make to the modern police force. Far too many people do not realise just what the specials do for absolutely no remuneration (although most of them do not get involved in murder enquiries)

Kudos to the author for laying it out

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for this ARC

I feel like this is just shyyyy of being able to be considered a cozy mystery!

I enjoyed the read. Given that it is number 4 of the series, I know I would have connected with the characters more had I read 1-3 beforehand. However, this novel was solid enough to be a standalone.

Easy flow to the story with multiple perspectives

Good read for the Halloween season!

Fantastic

From start to finish this is one great book. The storyline is will definitely hold your interest with enough twist and turns on the suspect fronts and the characters are so well written that you can picture them in your minds eye. As for the main characters their progress in there inter personal relationships is really what binds the story. Can't wait for the next book.
