To tell the truth this was a fun read for me. At some sections of the book the story did lag in maintaining my attention, but with charm from Jack and Tara being strong as she was the heated action between them kept the story moving. I’m a huge sucker for Scottish historical romance novels and this book was a sweet story. Tara’s character is one we’re in the beginning you find yourself questioning her actions. Jack’s character, you can’t help but fall for the man. Introducing Tara to Jack’s family friends was a great influence in helping the two figure out a solution to the plan that Tara has developed. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!

1.5/2 Stars - DNF @ 52%

This was better than book one, I'll admit. However, I found some of the pacing in the MCs relationship problematic for me. Which ultimately left me so frustrated that I didn't even want to bother finishing the book tbh.

While I understood the MMC Jack developing feelings for the FMC Tara during the three or four days after he kidnapped her, I felt their interactions didn't make sense for their timeline. When I say "didn't make sense" I'm referring to everything that happened once he admitted he had feelings for her after he decided to return her instead of going through with his plot for revenge.

Because Tara was actually uncomfortable with his feelings for her. In fact, she couldn't understand how he could even admit he might even love her after not only so little time but because she was technically his enemy and how he had treated her in the beginning. I was so happy she questioned him about his feelings and I was even happy she wasn't glowing in warmth from them either. It was a very realistic reaction IMHO and I appreciated it so much, especially because it fit the type of character we'd come to know Tara to be.

However, within quite literally a day her feelings towards him shift. Quite drastically. Suddenly she's more comfortable around him, likely because they acted as if he hadn't admitted he wanted her for himself the previous night. And then we progress to 51% in the story and everything no longer made sense to me.

Because while camping outside together and sitting shoulder to shoulder while they took cover under a tree canopy from the rain their relationship went from tepid to inferno. And honestly, that was not a good thing.

While talking somehow the MMC Jack begins caressing her face and before you know it she wants him to kiss her now, and then offers up her lips while turning to face him. And from there things get super heated as they begin to heavily make out, despite it being the fms first kiss. And the heat between them rose so quickly that they go from first kiss to having sex. Right there. Even after having the "there might be consequences" chat in which the FMC casually offers some advice she heard the maids in the castle discussing about their men using the "pull out method" and the MMC agreed it helped but not if the man loses his control and forgets. And how he didn't want to leave her with child.

But did that stop the FMC Tara? Nah. She wanted a ride on the Jack Express and got her wish. 🙄

Truly, it felt so rushed. They literally just shared their first kiss! They hadn't had any intimate, romantic or even potentially steamy moments at all up until this point. Even after Jack admitted his feelings for her things felt awkward between them. Stilted, even. I hated that we had to tarnish something as sweet as their first kiss together, and even the FMCs first kiss as well by rushing healdong into having sex.

I was beyond frustrated by this turn of events tbh. It felt like a nice and easy plot device simply because it was likely their last night alone together before everyone else got involved in their drama. Which was silly, because the FMC had no romantic inclinations or feelings for the MMC Jack at all until that point. At most she continued to find him intriguing due to his ability to feel deeply and his obvious change of heart where she was concerned. Even found him attractive once or twice when he displayed any other emotion other than grouchy. Otherwise, the author did both the MCs a disservice by rushing ahead and having them have sex so soon without much preamble. Because I found the timing of it terribly convenient for the plot but also hard to believe the FMC would have such a drastic change in feelings regarding Jack. Especially her not being the least bit hesitant or shy regarding her own sexuality. I'd imagine there would have been atleast a little bit of that ingrained in her considering the time era this takes place in. But even that's murky at best.

And was it necessary to have the MMC Jack cry after having sex with her? Honestly, that was a bit of a turn off for me. I didn't care that he felt things deeply, hell I wouldn't have cared if he cried at some point later on but after having sex with a woman he knew he couldn't keep? Really?

The MMC Jack seemingly went from this hardened revenge focused man who made a plan and executed it with precision. And yet, he was reduced to crying after sex? 😆 I mean, I understood his change of heart in wishing to return the FMC back home and regretting his choices. For allowing his need to avenge his father blind him to his own conscience but that was a wee bit too far for me.

Alas, me and this author gonna need a break. I enjoyed their previous series for the most part but this series has been one trainwreck after another. I doubt I'll even bother with the third book now.

We first meet Jack Maclean in book one of The Rogues of Mull in “The Lass He Left Behind”. He is Loch Maclean’s cousin where Loch Maclean and Mairi Macquarie, a woman from his past have a second chance romance. However this is Jack’s story in the second book of the Rogues of Mull series as the saga continues….

Isle of Mull, Scotland 1315

Jack Maclean wants vengeance against being waiting to abduct the woman he should despise. After all, her father Kendric MacKinnon murdered his father. Yet he should despise her instead she feels like she is the missing part of his heart that makes him whole. He only abducted Tara Mackinnon to hurt her father who murdered his father over a decade ago. However he had been fighting against the English now the hatred is back in his blood.

Like his cousin Loch, Jack Maclean had been fighting the English for the previous ten years. He had always wanted vengeance against Laird Kendric Mackinnon for slaughtering father fifteen years prior but had been preoccupied fighting the English with Robert the Bruce. However after Bannockburn he is now again consumed with hatred and malice he had put away, yet he is running out of time! As his daughter is supposed to marry Callum MacDonald of Sleat the following day which would give the MacKinnon a very powerful alliance and make them almost untouchable! Jack had one opportunity and took it while Tara had been shopping for ribbon in a shop alone.

As an abductor Jack was full of contradictions accidentally spraining Tara Mackinnon’s ankle when she was forced out the ribbon shop window. He gets a suave to help heal her ankle and saves her against men worse than himself and realizing his attraction for Tara MacKinnon was growing as much as his guilt. Tara had always done anything to help her clan even marrying a man she did not love to help strengthen her clan. She knows the Maclean’s were her enemies but soon she starts to open her eyes and realizes her father is not the Prince she had always thought him to be.

Tara was the bonniest woman he had ever seen but besides that she was clever, brave and resilient. Jack soon realized he had fallen in love with his enemy's daughter yet was still determined to go through with his evil plan that might night just hurt him if caught but his cousin the Laird or his elder brother Rae too. He soon is filled with guilt knowing Tara is not to blame for her fathers actions. Yet she is the only card he has to get the revenge and vengeance he had been wanting for so long. Tara knew she was attracted to Jack but soon sees a softer side too and Jack realizes she is the first and only woman he has ever loved!

Will Jack be able to go through with his dark seeded plan that will not just hurt her father but ruin Tara forever? Will Tara ever accept that her father is not the good man she always thought him to be? Will two enemies realize they are each other's soulmates as they are the other part of their hearts that make them whole. Read and find out!

Again Ms. Castel is my go to author and pens another book that just made my toes curl. This green eyes braw warrior and the red headed beauty was an absolute page turner that I could not put down! A book readers definitely don’t want to miss! I love that this series is about the three warriors Loch, Jack and Finn who fought Bannockburn with Robert the Bruce! Finn and Asrid’s book is next in “The Lady He Loathed” and I can’t wait to read it!

The Bride He Stole
Rogues of Mull #2
Jayne Castel
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jack Maclean wants revenge bad. He wants revenge against the man who killed his father. He's waited oh so long to get this revenge, and now he has a plan, and he needs to act on it. He's decided he's going to get Kendric Mackinnon where it hurts. He plans to steal his daughter.

Tara Mackinnon is very loyal to her clan and her father. She will do whatever it takes to help her father get the edge over his enemies, and that includes marrying a man she doesn't love to secure a powerful alliance. But just as Tara goes into a shop to look at ribbons, she's abducted by a stranger. Then she's tied, gagged, and dumped out the back window.

Now Jack is dragging Tara across the wilds of Mull, and she's praying that her father's men are hunting them down. But as she gets to know a little more about Jack, she finds herself drawn to him in a way she's never been drawn to someone before.
Then Jack realizes all is not as he thought, and he finds himself just as drawn to Tara as she is to him.

Should he not hate his enemies daughter? And should Tara not hate the man who abducted her and took her away from her family and clan?

Jayne Castel is absolutely brilliant. This is one of my go-to authors, and her books just keep getting better and better. This story was wonderful, and I felt like I was right there watching the atory unfold in person. Jack was wonderful, and he really had a hard time trying to keep Tara at arms length. Tara was a little spitfire, and you never knew what she was going to do next. If you are looking for a historical romance that will keep you guessing and cheering for the main characters, then look no further you have found your next read. Ms. Castel, I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to readers everywhere.

For a story that I finished pretty quickly, it really packed in A LOT of action. There were a lot of tropes and themes that I very much enjoy - medieval setting (immediate heart eyes!), revenge turns to regret, abduction, road trip, forced proximity, just-one-horse (That horse got stolen waaayyyy too soon, in my opinion. The people demand more just-one-horse situations!!!), family feuds and betrayal, adventure at sea, emotional hero.. I could go on!!

Jack and Tara were a couple that really grew on me during the course of this story. There are several references to Jack having been blinded by his need for revenge but I felt like don't tell me, show me because that wasn't my experience reading his character.. so maybe a bit of a disconnect there. He falls first - and hard - for Tara, but she's still reeling from the upheaval in her life caused by his actions to reciprocate. I appreciated later that she didn't try to fight her feelings for him too hard.. sometimes the character just has to go ALL IN and it definitely moves the story along nicely.

Good side characters too, and I'm already anticipating their stories - Finn and Astrid (absolutely), and Logan Black (gimme, gimme!!). The 'big bad' does not get resolved in this story, I can tell this is an overall arc that will be developed over several books and I ain't even mad about it! I will absolutely be keeping my eye out for the next in this series!.

A Thrilling Adventure Romance

I loved this gripping and fast-paced enemies-to-lovers story full of romance, adventure, danger and steam that had me hooked from the start. As always, Jayne Castel's storytelling and imagery is great, the characters are very likable and it was wonderful to follow how they and their relationship developed as the story progressed.
The ending came rather abruptly with a cliffhanger, but that didn't bother me. I'm already looking forward to Finn's story!

The story can be read as a standalone book, but I would recommend starting with the first installment in the series.

When Jack Maclean returns home to Isle of Mull after years in the war against the English alongside the Bruce, he is determined to take revenge on Laird Mackinnon, the man who brutally murdered his father and tyrannises the island.

He kidnaps the Laird’s daughter Tara, who Mackinnon wants to marry off to another clan laird in order to build up his army and a strong alliance. But the kidnapping doesn't go as smoothly as expected, Tara puts up fierce resistance, together they get into dangerous situations and Jack falls hopelessly in love with his enemy's daughter, who would do anything for her father and her clan...

If you like authentic Scottish medieval romance novels with fierce heroes and defiant heroines in a beautiful setting, you will love this book!

Such a good ‘enemies to lovers’ story! Tara’s father, Kendric Mackinnon, also known as ‘The Butcher of Dun Ara, was responsible for Jack’s father’s death. Jack’s need for revenge consumed him to the point of obsession. When it was discovered that Tara was to marry Callum MacDonald, thus cementing a deadly alliance between the Mackinnons and the MacDonalds of Sleat, Jack decided to kidnap her. And so, much of this story is their journey from one destination to another. It is fraught with deceit, danger and denial. A sleepless night leads to an ah-ha moment that changes everything for Jack who now sees the foolishness of his ways and knows there will be serious consequences for his actions. This is one emotional and pain filled adventure. Tara and Jack deal with physical injury, bandits, inclement weather and broken promises as they continue to their new destination. Lies are told, offers are made, and punishments administered. But it is one daring escape and a sack of jewels that seals their fate. This is an exciting story with a dangerous undercurrent, eye-opening moments and lots of strong emotions. The characters are vivid and varied. The writing is excellent and the ending leaves you temporarily satisfied and longing for more.

An unlikely match
I loved how this story evolved the longer Jack and Tara spent together.
It started with one man’s desperate need of revenge and the lengths he would go to exact it.
Jack not able to get past his father’s death sets in motion the kidnapping of his enemies daughter.
Not thinking how harming it could be to the innocent lass until it was too late.
Strong willed and never wanting to give up Tara did her best to thwart Jack along the way.
Spending so much time in each others company and knowing how he feels, will Jack carry out his plan to the bitter end?
Will Tara’s duty and loyalty to her clan win out? Or will she realise too late what she is throwing away?
This story was beautifully written dealing with a mixture of emotions from unending sorrow for a father lost, hate, danger and eventually to that of respect and love with some very passionate scenes along the way.
I’m really looking forward to what lays ahead for each character that we’ve been introduced to so far and the battle that must surely happen coming up in the final book in the trilogy.
A must read.

Jacks father was murdered and although it has taken years of planning, Jack will finally have his revenge; he will take McKinnon’s beloved daughter and that will satisfy his burning hatred.
Tara loves her father and hates his enemies just as much. When she is kidnapped by Jack, she tries numerous times to escape. She fears for her life as she can see that hatred has twisted his soul and turned him hard and closed off.
The descriptions are so great you are instantly taken to medieval Scotland, so much so you can almost hear the winds rushing through the trees and the waved crashing against the docks. Both Tara and Jack were troubled souls, but in different ways: again, the way they are portrayed was believable and drew you in to their plights.
I really enjoyed this book and loved how I was drawn in from the start and felt invested in their possible happiness, and left me eager to find out for what will happen in the next book.

The Bride He Stole is the second book in the Rogues of Mull series by Jayne Castel. As with all this author’s books, this was an interesting journey. Jack Maclean has waited a long time to get revenge from Kendric Mackinnon who murdered his father. Jack decides to kidnap Mackinnon’s loving daughter. This starts the journey that includes danger, fighting and maybe love.

Tara Mackinnon has agreed to marry someone who can ally her clan to another clan to fight Jack’s family. Before this happens, she is kidnapped by the enemy. She is then dragged through Mull in some difficult weather and situations.

As they get to know each other, there are some interesting soul searching by both characters. Can she forgive Jack for taking her away from her father? Can Jack realize that the consequences of his actions can be detrimental to his clan? Can these two characters accept the each other’s flaws and fall in love?

I can’t wait for the third book in this series.

The story is a page turner right from the start. It is filled with lots of adventures, betrayal, kidnapping, theft , family feuds and love.
Jack has just returned from the war with the English and still, has revenge on his mind esp toward the man who killed his dad.So he sets up a plan to kidnap the man’s daughter who is to be wed soon.
Tara is her father’s most prize possession but she is a smart strong woman. She gets kidnapped by Jack when shopping for ribbons for her wedding dress.
During their time and trials together Tara realizes her father is not the man she thought he was. She also realizes her growing feelings for Jack. Jack to over time comes to terms with his feelings for Tara, as she seems to be his missing piece.
Can these two overcome all and be together?

Vengeance, Riddles, Fate:
Heaven and sin made this a truly passionate love story right from the start.
Fate as a way of changing revenge into a thrilling love story that captured my heart.
Every page kept my pulse racing and the pages smoldering from their angst to their heated desire that explodes into a beautiful rewarding romance.
The two thrilling characters Jack and Tara are intelligent, courageous, passionate, and just plain enjoyable.
Their journey of discovery is filled with several terrifying escapes, overwhelming attraction, tender confessions, disappointing realizations, and swoon worthy passion that I suggest having your lady's fan handy.
All of the characters made this story amazing to read even the disgusting villains.

This book was so good! Jayne Castel is a truly remarkable author that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. Tara was the feisty, red-headed heroine that we all adore, but Jack wasn't the typical hero. Jack was sensitive and emotional. I was quite surprised.
This book did not have dull moments. I knew from page one that the book would be good. A good fast pace and entertaining throughout.
Both Jack and Tara's characters were well-written and likable. Some surprising twist and turns I didn't expect. An ending I wasn't ready for. I enjoyed having previous characters from book one make an appearance and really wanted the book to keep going. It does have an epilogue that was fitting, but I wouldn't have complained with more of this story. I am ready for book three.

Enemies to lovers

I enjoyed this story. Jack wants revenge for the murderer of his father Kenneth MacKinnon. Jack waited a long time to take his revenge. Jack planned to kidnap Kennedy's daughter. Things didn't turn out as he planned. Instead of revenge, he fell in love with Tara MacKinnon. Tara finds her life turned around from one of the Lairds daughter to one of fear and danger. Tara is stubborn and determined not to be afraid and discovering that what Jack says about her father is true, Her father is a liar and a scoundrel. I have followed Jayne Castel's novels for years and they never disappoint.

I loved Jack and Tara's story! Their relationship really didn't seem possible at the beginning, but it was wonderful to read as they overcame the challenges presented to them. Jack falling first was a bit of a surprise, given how set on revenge he was at the beginning of the book, but him being vulnerable was such great character development. Tara is my favorite heroine of this series so far - she was tough and fiery and gave Jack as good as he got. Can't wait for the next installment in this series.

Jack Maclean wants vengeance against the laird who murdered his father, one Laird Kendrick Mackinnon.
Laird Mackinnons daughter Tara was visiting a merchant to buy ribbons for her upcoming betrothal (to cement an alliance with the clan MacDonald) when she is abducted by Jack , she is taken from one side of Mull to the other and along the way her view of her life future changes .
This story was thrilling from start to finish.....

What an astounding read this was with drama, angst, romance, and adventure, all with the beautiful Isle of Mull as a backdrop to the story. Jack being the rogue he is thinks his plan to steal the MacKinnon's daughter away is a good idea. Tara isn't impressed but has her eyes opened to possibilities. This trope is definitely enemies to lovers and it's a must read for Highland Romance readers.

Blood feuds, obsessions, pirates, a feisty heroine who steadfastly supports her clan and a kind hearted man whose vision is obscured by his desire for revenge this book has it all. The novel seemed like there was way too much Dialog overall and not enough action.

This book is atypical Medieval romance.
