Rock-hard men in the sheets, delectable cheese in the streets.
Violette Reely walks into her great uncle’s abandoned cheese shop then promptly runs back out. You would too if you discovered a secret basement hiding beneath a trapdoor. One second, there’s nothing down there but cheese wheels in an old chest, the next four naked men are chasing her out the door.
Refusing to give up the million-dollar property to her wild imagination, Violette returns the next day. Despite the place being ransacked, she’s certain she made up those mysterious men who vanished inside a locked store. Then, as the sun sets, cheeses lying on piles of discarded clothing roll across the floor until they poof into the four men from last night.
Men who transform into cheese.
What the hell?
Stoic and domineering, Roq’s the de facto leader keeping everyone in line. Everyone that is but Cam, the charming playboy whose smooth lines melt the hardest rinds. Cheddy is a tall hunk of joy, as easy to like as his namesake. And last, but never forgotten, is Brie. Soft-spoken, with an artistic soul, he’s the sweet wallflower waiting for the right person to scoop him up.
These strange cheese-shifters need Violette’s help. They need someone to protect them when they’re trapped as cheese by day. But, after centuries of being screwed over by their caretakers, they’re wary. No one is slower to trust than Roq who expects betrayal at every corner. Even if Violette agrees to help them sell off their secret cheese stash and find a new place, he cuts her down at every turn keeping her at arm’s length. He’s hiding a secret that could destroy everything he’s fought for across the world.
But Violette has one of her own. If these cheese-men ever find out, it’ll curdle her heart.
Can the hardest of cheeses find it in himself to let his heart melt or will these cheese-shifters find themselves chewed up and spat out by life? Will Violette sell off the shop and make off with millions or risk the possibility of cheddar days for these cheesy men?
Ellen Mint adores the adorkable heroes who charm with their shy smiles and heroines that pack a punch. She recently won the Top Ten Handmaid's Challenge on Wattpad where hers was chosen by Margaret Atwood. Her books, Undercover Siren and Fever are available at Amazon as well as a short story in the Lucky Between The Sheets anthology. Married, she lives in Nebraska with her dog named after Granny Weatherwax. Her hobbies include gaming, painting, and halloween prop making. The basement is full of skeletons because they ran out of room in the closets.
“There was cheese,” I mutter, pointing back to the ground before swinging my finger up to Cheddy. “Then you.”
Have you ever wanted to read a cheese shifter romance book? I know the answer is yes, don't bother lying.
OK first thing's first, the cover? Gorgeous. The little cheese illustrations as chapter headings? Brilliant. The chapter titles? So funny (and punny). And the idea to write the world's first cheese shifter romance? Revolutionary.
I knew I'd have a good time with this, not just because cheese is my favourite thing in the world, but also because I'm well acquainted with Ellen Mint's writing through the Coven of Desire series (which you should also read if you like hilarious witchy shenanigans, there's even a little teaser for it at the back of the book).
Why Cheese is a book I always knew I needed, but no one saw fit to write it...UNTIL NOW. THANK YOU ELLEN MINT!!!!!
We have Violette who inherits a cheese shop from her great uncle who died, and is planning on selling it in hopes of finally getting away from her horrible controlling mother. Her determination starts to waver when four hot cheese shifter men materialise out of thin air, begging her to keep the store open for a few months, then she can sell it. And who could really say no to Brie, Cam, Cheddy and Roq (not me)? Obviously, a cheesy romance for the ages ensues.
At first I was a little bit overwhelmed with getting to know all four guys at once, but they each won me over in no time with their unique personalities. It's so hard to pick a favourite...but if I HAD to mayhaps Cam. Just because he was the friendliest and funniest at the start. He was ready to show Vi the time of her life, and I was like yess Cam go Cam!!
The next one would have to be Roq, Cam's complete opposite but we have no choice but to stan. He could be mean at times, but he was hot so...you can't blame me.
Ok now I can't choose who to put third between Cheddy and Brie so they're sharing third place, it's only fair, no one deserves to Brie last. Hah, see what I did there? Yes so, I loved how silly goofy Cheddy was and how sweet and shy Brie was equally.
Vi was lovely as a main character, and I could relate to her even though I don't have OCD (I think?), but there are some things I do several times even though I know they're irrational so maybe...let's just say that locking thing rang a bit too close to home, hah.
I hateddddd her mother so much, I was going "why are you so mean??" every time she was on the page. She's one of those villains that will annoy the hell out of you, so be warned.
Up until the last third I was convinced we'd need a sequel to wrap everything up, so the ending surprised me by doing just that. I gotta say, I'm sad it seems to be a standalone, but it also feels like a complete story. I like the resolution we got (especially in regards to mother dearest over there). I'd still like a little novella though, please and thank you.
P. S. You know what I did this morning? Ate cheese. You know what I'm gonna do after I post this review? Eat some more cheese. I'll be careful to avoid any that might shift into men though.
*Thank you to the amazing author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
please note that the trigger warnings and topes/themes may contain spoilers I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. HEA: yes, HFN POV: single 1st person POV (FMC) spice: several open-door spicy scenes TWs: death of a family member (recounted), emotional abuse, mental health (OCD, anxiety, self-harm), Munchausen syndrome by proxy (not called out by name but… come on), slut shaming, fat shaming, body shaming, bullying, overbearing/narcissist parent, curses, grief, religious trauma standalone: yes final thoughts: okay so given what this book promised to give (a satire why choose romance about 4 men who are cursed to be cheese during the day), it was actually good! The characters were well thought out and were easily distinguishable even though we are introduced to 7 characters in chapter 1 which was impressive. Overall, the story had me on the edge of my seat and had depth other than cheese tasting. The shifters have been together for hundreds of years and, as time goes on, they have to find someone they can trust to keep their secret and keep them safe during the day- will Violette be able to help them and keep their secret or will the possibility of selling the shop for millions be too good to pass up? The MMCs have 4 very distinct personality traits (and character art at the beginning of the book!!) that coincide with their names/cheese types 🧀 Roq is an acquired taste and very serious 🧀 Cheddy is a crowd favorite and life of the party Himbo 🧀 Cam is a smooth charmer who flirts his way into and out of every situation 🧀 Brie is a softie who is a shy wallflower looking for his place Through their years together they’ve made it through the nights by “comforting” 😉😏 each other which leads to multiple sword-crossing scenes throughout the book.
Expect lots of cheese puns and overall food humor that is sometimes cringy, but overall the experience was so unique and funny that I couldn’t put this book down so this 3.5⭐ gets rounded up to a 4 for ✨vibes✨
Be warned that for such a silly book there are some significant triggers that take up most of the plot. 1. The mother in this book was an absolutely domineering beast and cut down the FMC Violette at every opportunity. 2. Violette has pretty severe OCD that comes out in compulsions, intrusive thoughts, and skin scratching/harming.
read this book if you love 🫡 big MMC 🍪cinnamon roll MMC 🎣 fish out of water 😳 forbidden lovers 🏝️ forced proximity (the MMCs live in her shop) 👨👩👧👦 found family 😡 grumpy/sunshine 🤫 hidden secrets 😏 kinky (public threesome) 🌈 LGBT+ representation 🪄 magic (curses) 💖 paranormal romance 🐺 shifters 💔 no third act breakup ⚔️ why choose (MMMMF) 💼 workplace romance
Violette goes to wrap things up at her late uncle's cheese shop but gets the shock of her life when some of his cheeses come to life as hot men. Yes, I'm serious. Now she has to decide if she will keep them safe in the shop or send them on their way and make some big money.
There are so many layers to unpack here. But, once you accept the fact that the boys are werecheese (LOL actually), you start to enjoy it. This is pretty spicy and mad awkward, but it's sweet too. It's the perfect blend. It was a fun time.
"Well, we're in this together." "I'm sorry, do you also become a curdled dairy product when the sun rises?"
If you ever wanted to read a why choose book about 4 were-cheese men who are human at night and cheese by day, this is the book for you! I can't say that I ever wanted to, but due to some healthy peer pressure and an abundance of positive reviews I still gave it a fair shot. I'm apparently more of a sweet tooth, because it did not hit the same as it did for other people.
My general feelings summed up in one GIF:
Yes, this was ... well ... so awkward and cringe 90% of the time. There were some cute moments, sure, and I personally really appreciated the OCD rep as someone who has OCPD and has a gremlin of her own in her head. I'm also an enjoyer of bad puns, so every chapter title made me smirk. However, I have my limits. And those limits have were crossed by this book in tenfold. I still don't entirely know why I kept reading - I was a little too committed to the bit, apparently.
So many parts of this book made me uncomfortably cringe, but I hoped that at least within all this unhinged madness there would be some good smut. Unfortunately those scenes just made me cringe even more.
To give you just one example of me being horrified:
🧀 Were-cheese 🧀 OCD rep 🧀 Smut scenes (that made me want to wash my eyes with soap) 🧀 Why cheese when you can have the entire charcuterie board? 🧀 Will make you rethink your life choices
I would like you all to know that this pains me especially because my dog is called Cheddar and I am well and truly horrified right now. I can never ever again. Or just cheese in general, for that matter.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Readability: 📖📖📖 (I had to tell myself to keep picking it up to finish it) Feels: 🦋🦋 Emotional Depth: 💔💔 Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡ Romance: 💞💞💞 Sensuality: 💋💋💋 (these were explicit but a bit too...corny for me?) Should I read in order? This is a stand alone novel.
Basic plot: Vi inherits a cheese shop and is shocked when she finds 4 cheese were-shifters in the basement...
Give this a try if you want: - contemporary paranormal-ish - why choose (with some M/M love) – our heroine has 4 boyfriends - OCD rep (heroine) - were-cheese – these heroes shift into cheese during the daylight hours - soooooooooooooo cheesy...like literally and figuratively and any other way I can say it - medium to higher steam – 4-ish scenes
Ages: - Heroine is 25. The heroes seem to be ‘frozen’ at the ages they were cursed, which I would guess is 20s, possibly early 30s? Though at least some of them have been alive for hundreds of years
First line: On the corner sits a cheese shop full of painful memories, dark shadows, and the unfortunate name of Goudafellas.
My thoughts: I was thinking I would love this one! But sadly it didn’t work for me. I think the humor wasn’t my thing – it was too cheesy (! Yes, I said it!) and I think others that like this style of humor will appreciate this book way more than me! It was a bit too slap stick and too many one liners. “Climb aboard the cheese train,” he cries out and I laugh. “Now departing for ‘Umph, oh god,’ station,” Cam adds. “Are you ready?” I ask “Choo-choo!” he shouts and I guide him inside me.
It also just felt really long to me. And that is probably just a personal thing, because I’m liking short books right now. And when I read novels like this, I am used to them being a much lower page count. I think I was hoping for more depth, but I didn’t get to know any of the characters super well in this novel. Not as well as I wanted to. So the page count just felt really long to me and I kept sitting it down and picking it up.
Don’t let my thoughts deter you though! If you have been craving 4 hot men in your bed and also adore cheese, why not give this one a go? 😂
Quotes/spoiler-y thoughts:Any mistakes/typos are my own
Content warnings: These should be taken as a minimum of what to expect. It’s very possible I have missed some.
Locations of kisses/intimate scenes: Safe sex: condoms used Hows the consent? It’s good 26% - kisses with Cam and Vi 30% - 🔥 kisses with Brie and Vi, fingering for her, missionary followed by a kiss with Cam and Vi 41% - 🔥 threesome with Cheddy and Cam – her on top with Cheddy then her on top of Cam while Cheddy self pleasures 56% - 🔥 heroine has a cheesecloth knotted over her eyes, threesome between Vi, Cheddy and Brie (Brie doggy and bj for Cheddy), then doggy with Cheddy while she falls into Roq’s lap, the Cam takes over, oral for her. Then Roq grabs Cam and starts jerking him off 95% - 🔥 sex with all of them

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgement (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (4) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
• Cheddy is the strawberry blond himbo. He loves to toss around cheese wheels to keep in shape as he used to be Knight. His full name is Sir Chedward.
• Cam, the dark-haired playboy with all the smooth moves. He lives life charming every pretty face he comes upon. Why take life seriously when he becomes a dairy product every dawn?
• Brie is a fair-haired wallflower. As sweet and soft as his namesake, he loves books, painting, and is a vegetarian. Under his gentle skin is the mark of a Viking tattoo.
• Roq, as off-putting upon first meeting as his namesake, he's the leader of the cheese men. Don't let the blue hair fool you, he's a grump that lurks in the cellar and is obsessed with making cheese. A deep, dark secret consumes his soul.
most parts of this (that weren't the sex scenes that made me want to claw my own eyes out) were surprisingly heartfelt and even charming. but there are also the sex scenes.
Marketed as the first cheese shifter romance I was intrigued and had to jump on this. - It's funny, flirty, creative and delightfully cheesy. Yes they actually do turn into cheese, think of them like werewolves but they are cheese by day, and quirky needy and flirty men by night, who also have a passion for making cheese. Cheddy, Cam, Roq and Brie all have distinct personalities and are little cheesy sweethearts that adore their new mistress Violette. The plot is fun, so many puns, I adored the cheesy chapter names, and it's a feel good and steamy read. Definitely a unique shifter book to read!
🧀 RH / MMFMM 🧀 OCD rep 🧀 Curses 🧀 Parental control 🧀 Shifters 🧀 Found Family
A bunch of bookstagram friends put this book on my radar because I’m obsessed with cheese. Then one of them was kind enough to gift me a copy and it was game over. Life got put on hold and I read it in 3 days. I went into this book having no idea what it was about and it was magical.
WHY CHEESE is about 4 cheese-shifting men named Roq, Cam, Cheddy, and Brie. They’re cursed to be cheese by day, but turn into hot, luscious men by night. They’ve been living in a cheese shop, which our FMC Violette just inherited.
Sparks fly in this reverse harem / polyamorous, FMMMM, cheesy goodness of a book. I really enjoyed all of the characters, but especially Brie and Cheddy 🥰 WHY CHEESE was silly, fun, and a nice little escape. I hope there’s a second book 🧀
Wasn’t terrible but had some insufferable parts. Definitely not as fluffy brain candy as I was expecting it to be. There was a lot of plot and personality to each character. And all the backstories! Sheesh now I know why it was such a long book
This was an adorable why choose which i don't read a lot of adorable books in this sub genre. The guys were too cute and the sex scenes were ultra hot. Some moments were downright cringy (choo choo), and there was far too much cheese education in this for my liking. I don't know that I absolutely loved it but i enjoyed my time reading it and i love the OCD rep in this book a lot.
Also, the mom in this is TOP TIER level shitty. She's the type of mom that gives a bad name to all other moms out there. It's quite abusive and triggering so just be aware. The whole ending to this made me mad, sad, desperate, and then happy. it made me feel so many things at once that I've amended this review and giving it that extra star.
cheese shifters super spicy adorable
You will love this book if this is what you are looking for.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing the ARC copy for free though all thoughts are my own.
I had seen this book and was intrigued by the premise of it. A cheese shifter romance? Not heard of anything like that before so I thought I’d give it a try. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.
I wasn’t sure how this was going to work if I’m honest but it does. These guys are great I loved Brie, he was my favourite if I have to pick! I really liked Violette, I honestly felt for her so much. Her mother was awful, I don’t think there are many characters I have disliked much more than her!!!
I loved the ending but I won’t give anything away. I do recommend you give this one a read. Is it insane yes probably but it works.
Were-cheese - 4 men (Roq, Cheddy, Cam, and Brie) cursed to be cheese by day and men by night - are found in a cheese cellar by a young woman. They clearly all fall in love. But can they break the curse? (no). Will the magic make sense? (also no)
I’ve enjoyed all of the “sentient object” romances I’ve read, so I had great hopes for this one. It’s a big nope.
The concept was fun but our ingenue FMC Violette is extremely annoying, and the sniping between the guys gets really old fast. The subplot of the curse, the shop, her mom and the realtor is one big sloppy mess. At 30% I decided it was unreadable.
I read this because I couldn’t believe that there was a book like this out there. I have so many questions that will never be answered 😂 I have never seen so many cheese puns in my life.
Why cheese? The better question is WHY NOT cheese? I was not prepared to enjoy this book as much as I did. The premise sounded off the wall, and cheese shifters? This was going to be a hot mess..... Except it wasn't...Not at all..... There was an actual plot, albeit parts were very loosely wound, the characters were well written, and it even touched on some darker issues like OCD and parental dependence. The female lead came into her own with the help of the cheese men. And the men, poor sweet Brie stole my heart with Cam a close second. They all had very individual personalities, and sometimes seemed a bit one dimensional; yet as the story unfolded you began to see more of them and come to understand them. The ending was perfect, and I can't say it due to spoilers; however the problem isn't solved and instead worked around. So it's def a happily ever after, just not the one you'd expect and I was thrilled about that. I went into this thinking it would be ridiculous and came out the other side with an appreciation for the author, crafting a story of this depth out of cheese. Now if you'll excuse me I have a date with Havarti.
Reviewing a reverse harem cheese shifter romance on main? Sure, let’s go.
I was hooting and hollering though the entire thing. This was camp. It was ridiculous enough to have me laughing at many points, but still had depth. I enjoyed this a surprising amount. I read this on a beach vacation while sipping on an adult beverage, which was the perfect setting for it.
If you want a fun, campy little time, look no further.
Okay this is definitely a hear me out book. The idea that men could be cheese shifters I was like what is this?? Then I started reading this and I was like OMG gagggeddd the entire time. It’s definitely not a book to read around your grandma cuz the spice level is 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ . It was for shits and gigs and only 325 pages so kind of quick. Definitely a good conversation starter
For this review, I'm rating in cheese instead of stars. Surely it'd be wrong not to 😆☺️

•MY THOUGHTS & RREVIEW OF THIS BOOK - This book was so funny & cute in parts. I absolutely loved it. I've never read anything like it before - (A book about CHEESE-SHIFTERS) 🧀😆☺️ Brilliant!!!
If you love paranormal romance with a hint of cheese 🧀 ♥️ 😄 then this book is for you, plus it gets spicy in parts.
I actually laughed out loud a few times, including in a hospital waiting room, and I'm sure my husband was embarrassed 😳 ☺️😆 (I was waiting to go down to the theatre for surgery, so i got a lot of reading done that day waited hours 😆)
I really loved the cheese men. They had great names aswell 😆 and so very different personalities, which worked so well. I loved the MFC as well. I really felt for her at times. Her mum thought, "omg I hated her!"" She angered me a few times.
The book is quite fast-paced towards the middle and end but slow St. The beginning, which is good for me, as I like to learn about the characters and the world building. Overall, if I could give this book more 🧀⭐️ I would, I would give it an 8 and a half out of 10.
Another thing I thought was really good was the way violettes Gremlin (OCD) was handled. The author Ellen handled this subject very well. So even though this book is a is a cute paranormal romcom in areas, there's some darkness too. Which makes the book well balanced and unique. Go buy this book if you haven't already, you won't be disappointed, I know I wasn't.
“You’re wondering how the mousy one, the boisterous one, the sullen one, and the dastardly charming and incredibly handsome one could find themselves together in a cheese shop in the New World?”
Ellen is coming in HOT 🥵 and bringing a whole new meaning to "cheesy romance." 'WHY CHEESE?' is a Shape-shifter reverse harem like nothing I've ever read! When I signed up for this arc, I'll admit, I went in not expecting much. Boy, was I wrong. Mint is a phenomenal writer, and I quickly fell in love with all of these characters. Sassy, steamy, and Oh so cheesy! Grab a copy today so you, too, can fall in love with Cheddy, Brie, Cam, and Roq!
Look, I'm not recommending this--- no, actually. I am recommending this. But it's a 3.5 rounded up. The only critique I have is the fact that Cam's nickname is spelled three different ways. If you like cheese and make questionable life choices, this book does indeed have cheese and questionable life choices.
I so wish that I could read this over again for the first time. As soon as I finished the book, I wanted nothing more than to read it again and again. I'm so extremely soft for cheese men and a broken but absolutely beautiful heroine...it's unreal.
I've been the biggest fan of Ellen for so long. She has a way of completely sucking you into a story, and before you know it, you've totally devoured the book. Her characters are bright and bold and real in a way that you fall in love with them and take them into your heart without a choice. They're so relatable, no matter how crazy you might think they are, and you can find small things to empathize with in each of her characters that make them feel that much more engaging.
Vi's character growth was beautiful to read and is probably the best example of believable dynamic character growth I've ever read. She struggles with a mental illness that her incredibly toxic mom makes worse, and it broke my heart to see how horrible her mom was to her. Reading as she finally gained the strength and courage to stand up and be her own warrior gave me chills. It was such an amazing moment, and I was so proud of her for what she did!
And the men! All four of them were each unique and brought different things to the relationship. I loved all four of them so much. It took me a little bit to warm up to Roq, but once he opened up, I was smitten. They were so good for Vi and THE SPICE! While the fun scenes aren't extremely graphic, they hit all the right notes and really ramp up the relationship the five of them have.
I've been a fan of Ellen's for quite some time, and I'll admit, cheese shifters kind of threw me off at first. But I'm always game for something new, and I'll never regret giving an Ellen Mint story a read! This one blew me away, no doubt about it.
Cheese the day and give this one a read, I promise you won't regret making a brieline for this one...it's as gouda as gold!
