There may be honor among thieves, but a long-ago diamond heist might hold the secret to a man’s murder . . .
Pet shop owner Shell McMillan is thrilled to see everyone in Fox Hollow flocking to the local animal shelter’s fundraiser, where they can get their old keepsakes and collectibles appraised and maybe even sell them for a tidy sum. But the event has drawn some shady characters as well, including Pete Martin, who seems determined to get his hands on a beat-up old jewelry box at any cost. Then Martin is found murdered, and Shell has to go from fundraising to finding a killer.
It doesn’t take long for Shell to figure out that the jewelry box was concealing diamonds from a long-ago heist, and that Martin wasn’t the only one trying to get his hands on the stash. But to figure out who wanted him dead, she’ll have to uncover who was behind the original heist and who knows where the rest of the gems are hidden. It’s as dangerous a case as Shell has ever faced, and if she’s not careful, her search for the missing stones will leave her stone-cold dead . . .

T. C. LoTempio is the award-winning, nationally bestselling author of the Nick and Nora Mysteries, the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries, and the Cat Rescue Mysteries. For more information, check out her and her cat Rocco’s blog at www.catsbooksmorecats.blogspot.com and visit her website at www.tclotempio.net.
While Toni LoTempio does not commit – or solve – murders in real life, she has no trouble doing it on paper.
Her lifelong love of mysteries began early on when she was introduced to her first Nancy Drew mystery at age 10 – The Secret in the Old Attic. She lists among her favorite mystery/suspense writers Erle Stanley Gardner, Mary Higgins Clark and James Patterson, as well as EJ Copperman, Steve Hockensmith, Victoria Laurie, Ali Brandon, Rita Mae Brown, Miranda James and Sofie Kelly to name only a few!
Toni is also passionate about her love for animals, as demonstrated with her four cats: Trixie, Princess, Maxx and, of course, ROCCO, who not only provided the inspiration for the character of Nick the cat in the Nick and Nora mystery series, but who also writes his own blog and does charity work for Nathan Fillion’s charity, Kids Need to Read!
Toni’s also devoted to miniseries like The Thorn Birds, Dancing with the Stars, reruns of Murder She Wrote and Castle (of course!).
She (and ROCCO, albeit he’s uncredited) pen the Nick and Nora mystery series from Berkley Prime Crime.
She, Rocco and company make their home in Clifton, New Jersey, just twenty minutes from the Big Apple – New York
Great addition to the Urban Tails Pet Shope series. My fave, so far! If you love antiques, cats, cozy murder mysteries, solving old cold cases, cozy relationships, multiple suspects, and putting all the clues together to solve the crime; you’ll enjoy CATS, CARATS, AND KILLERS. The story is also highlighted by humor and smart, cuddly cats. 🩷 I highly recommend.
I honestly reviewed an unedited digital arc provided by NetGalley and Beyond The Page Publishing. All opinions are my own.
Shell McMillan owns the Urban Tails Pet Shop so it makes sense for her to co-sponsor a fundraiser for the local animal shelter organized by her mother, Clarissa, no less, now a partner at Seconhand Sue's. Clarissa has convinced Gerard Antoine, the host of a local antiques appraisal show and huge animal lover and supporter of no-kill shelters to come to Fox Hollow to appraise people's "treasures" at their Appraise for Strays event. An old jewelry box draws quite a bit of attention. It has even brought former Fox Hollow resident Pete Martin back to town which wasn't a smart move because he was later murdered.
Shell soon learns about a diamond robbery that happened in town several years ago. The thieves were never caught and the diamonds were never found. With all the interest in the old jewelry box, Shell thinks there has to be a connection. But why kill Pete Martin? To find a killer and hopefully the gems she has to look into the old case which could put her right in the killer's sights. If she finds all those carats it could be curtains for her and her cats are going to need new caregivers.

We are back in Fox Hollow, Connecticut with Shell and her lovable cats, Purrday, Kahlua, and Princess Fuzzypants. They have a new friend, Cleopawtra. After some of the cat's hijinks, Shell finds herself right in the middle of a cold case and a new murder. Shell has turned out to be a talented amateur sleuth even though her homicide detective boyfriend, Josh Bloodgood wishes she would leave the investigations to him. Ms. LoTempio does a marvelous job capturing the cats' personalities and their humans' lives.
The mystery was a tangled one with puzzling clues to figure out and follow. I was happy to follow along as Shell and Gary worked through the clues. They did as much research and snooping as necessary and had some feline assistance, but Shell is alone when the last clue falls into place and I must say WOW! What a showdown!
Cats, Carats, and Killers was a fun read! Wonderful characters and an intriguing mystery kept me marvelously entertained. I figured out part of the mystery before Shell, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the story one bit. It was a Perfect Escape!
I can't wait for the next book because Shell's mother already has a new idea at the end of this story and I know Ms. LoTempio will take that idea and run with it delightfully for her readers to enjoy.
#CatsCaratsandKillers #NetGalley featuring pet shop owner Shell McMillan, is a fun addition to this wonderful series. The fundraiser for the local animal shelter is giving people the opportunity to have their favorite keepsakes appraised with the chance to sell them for a pretty penny. When a few people are determined to get their hands on a jewelry box, Shell realizes it may hold a clue to a jewelry store robbery years before. She's determined to find out why there's so much interest in the jewelry box, but soon finds herself in hot water, not sure if she can talk her way out of being hurt or worse. I found myself immersed in the story, as anxious as Shell was to put the pieces together to solve the mystery. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book. I'm happy to recommend this book to other readers.
Pet shop owner Shell McMillan has a stall at the first Fox Hollow collectables fundraiser for the local animal shelter. With her mother now a partner in Secondhand Sue's she is seeing a lot more of her, while boyfriend, and local detective Josh, is working on a decade old diamond heist cold case and so she is seeing far less of him!
When a jewellery box is left to be appraised, causing more than one of the fundraiser attendees to suddenly become very eager to pay well over the top for it, Shell is curious. Unfortunately, this leads to the discovery of a body, a local prime suspect, and links with Josh's investigation! As Shell and her friend and local journalist Leila look closely at the clues they've discovered the danger comes ever nearer. Can Shell put everything together in time, or will she find out just how desperate the killer has become?
This is the fourth in the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries, but the first I've read. However, T C LoTempio is an author whose other work I have always enjoyed, so I decided to take a chance, and I'm very glad I did. It did take me a few chapters to get involved, but once the body was discovered, I was off and running. I sorted a few of the clues and their likely meanings out but certainly wasn't confident enough to know whodunnit. Having enjoyed this, I hope there will be more from Fox Hollow for me to enjoy in the future.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Beyond the Page, but the opinions expressed are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this after a slightly shaky start and am very glad I stuck with it.
"Cats, Carats, and Killers (Urban Tails Pet Shop #4)" T.C. loTempio is a bit cold case jewel theft, a bit modern cozy murder mystery. Are the two linked? Or, are they their own mysteries? In this one you can't ignore any of the clues. The only red herrings are the fine details of each clue.
Gotta love the cats in this series. They certainly do much of the investigating, or at least pointing out of clues. I half expected Shell to end up with a fourth cat in her home by the end of this one at the rate she's been acquiring cats.
Shell McMillan owns the local pet shop, Urban Tails and is more than happy to help out at the local animal shelter’s fundraiser, Appraise for Strays. The citizens of Fox Hollow, Connecticut will have the opportunity to bring things from home and get them appraised. When an old jewelry box is brought in, it attracts more attention than anything else. Strangers start offering big bucks for it and one of those potential buyers is found dead. Shell is on the case to find out what is so valuable about a box that wasn’t appraised very high at all.
Shell finds herself in the middle of a cold case and present-day murder investigation. Her boyfriend, Josh Bloodgood, advises her to stay out of it. After all, he’s a homicide detective and knows just what kind of danger Shell could be in if she continues her snooping. We all know Shell is not going to stop until she solves the case.
Shell and her kitty companions, once again, find themselves in the thick of things. Shell is determined to get to the bottom of things while her kitties are determined to protect her. I always enjoy this series. Of course, being a cat lover, the cats always touch my heart. They are as important to the story as any of the humans.
The author does an excellent job of creating an intriguing story with fascinating characters. Although the mystery is wrapped up in each book, it’s so much more fun to start this series from the beginning. It gives the reader a chance to get to know the characters (and kitties, too!)
I’ve been a big fan of this series (and the author) from day one. This one is filled with charm, mystery and it left me smiling. I’m looking forward to more exciting mystery stories from this author.
FTC Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed a free Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
While “Cats, Carats, and Killers” is the fourth book in T.C. LoTempio’s Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries, it is the first book I have read in the series but it won’t be the last – I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I love the main character – former actress turned pet shop owner Shell McMillan, as well as the supporting characters including her sometimes overbearing mother, roommate Gary, boyfriend Josh, her various friends, and of course her cats who are very helpful in solving mysteries. The mystery in this book is a good one mixing both a jewelry store robbery in the past with a current day murder and Shell's reason for getting involved is a good one as a close friend is the chief suspect in the murder (I will say that Josh has the patience of a state as Shell keeps interfering in his case). This isn’t really the type of book where you try to figure out who the bad guys are but sit back and enjoy the ride – I will say that while I figured out about halfway through who one of the culprits was but I was totally wrong as to why they did it. I did have to suspend belief a bit during the scene when all was revealed but all in all I really enjoyed this book.
Cats, Carats, & Killers is the fourth installment in the popular Urban Tales Pet Shop Mystery series by T.C. LoTempio. Shell McMillan is the owner of the Urban Tales Pet Shop and is involved in a fundraiser where residents can bring their old items in and get them appraised. The fundraise is a huge success, but one item an old jewelry box that has been appraised and is found to be worth less than $50, generates enough interest by a previous resident of the town, Pete Martin, who may have been involved in a jewelry store heist a decade or so before. Shell then catches a couple trying to steal that same jewelry box. When Shell’s cats are playing a game of chase and knock the jewelry box off a shelf and it breaks, she finds it contains a diamond from that old heist, and then discovers Pete Martin murdered. Now Shell, who is an amateur sleuth, investigates because a man she is sure isn’t guilty is the prime suspect.
LoTempio’s delightful series is especially fun for cat lovers, because her cats (including one named Princess Fuzzypants) are involved in many of the fun scenarios that move the storyline along. She also does an excellent job of developing the characters, which are actually quite believable. Shell is a likeable protagonist, and readers will also enjoy the sub-characters who are introduced in this novel.
All told, there is enough information in this novel to read it as a standalone book, but it is one that will inspire readers to pick up the previous novels in the series.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
This series has everything I love in cozy mysteries, cats, female that sleuth as a side hustle, with cute jobs in cute settings. I did guess the killer but it was an interesting mystery! The link between the cold case and the current murder was strong and well thought out. I do think this lacked a little of the relationship charm and romance the previous books included but Gary is still my fav side character. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this story in exchange for my honest opinion.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Yes, the one and only! I cannot begin to claim objectivity in reviewing this book but I absolutely loved it. Toni knows how to write us kitties and she has done a bang up job in putting Purrday, my handsome beau, Kahlua and Cleopawtra and me into the story. It is a good mystery where a diamond heist a decade ago returns to the forefront with a murder and an unusual box. The cold case and the hot murder have Shell and her friends giving her boyfriend Josh and a visiting FBI agent a run for their money in solving the crimes.
But the best part is the roles that Purrday and I play saving the day. Literally. I am so excited about how it is done but I am not going to tell you anything because I don’t want to spoil the fun. Let me tell you, if you like cat mysteries, you are going to love this.
I did not realize this was the fourth book in the series when I was lucky enough to receive this book from #NetGalley and #BeyondthePagebooks, but it didn't matter. This was very easy to follow and quite interesting. Shell is a great main character with an interesting past, I love her shop, her friends, and her adorable cats. In this story, Shell is helping with a fund raiser when she and her mischievous cats discover a clue that was left in a jewelry box, waiting for appraisal at the fundraiser Since the cats knocked the box over, Shell feels responsible, but when she finds numerous people trying to get their hands on the box, then there is a murder it looks more like help, maybe needed. When the FBI shows up and today's mystery may be tied to an old jewel, heist things get very interesting. It is a fun romp with interesting characters and animals.
Shell McMillan is helping with a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. For a small fee people can bring in their antiques and have them appraised. When a couple of people try to steal an antique jewelry box that was dropped off, Shell puts it away for safe keeping. It ends up broken and she discovers a diamond and a partial slip of paper that came out of a hidden compartment. In the meantime, a former resident of Fox Hollow returns trying to buy back his former business. Then he ends up dead. He was also after the jewelry box. Shell figures out that the diamond was related to an old unsolved diamond heist case from a few years ago. Can she figure out where the diamonds are and who was involved in the heist before they come after her? Once again she has help from her friends and her cats. I really enjoy these books and getting to know the characters.
Cats, Carats, and Killers is the fourth book in the Urban Tails Pet Shop series by T.C. LoTempio. I have followed this series from the beginning and I must say, the main characters (aka the cats) are what keeps me coming back. Well, that and the engaging storylines with a solid main “human” character 😊.
The murder that Shell McMillan feels compelled to solve in this cozy mystery is also tied into a long-ago diamond heist, so more intrigue and complexity to the solving of the murder. Always a plus in my book. From the progression from book one – I can see that Shell is developing as an amateur sleuth. However, she does still seem to get caught up in the drama and inadvertently puts herself in harms way. Luckily, Purrday, Kahlua, and Princess Fuzzypants (the three cats) always seems to help her in time.
The story begins with Shells’ mother, Clarissa (who is now a partner at Second Hand Sue’s) organizing the “Appraise for Strays” event. Clarissa has even convinced Gerard Antoine; the host of a local antiques appraisal show and huge animal lover and supporter of no-kill shelters to come to Fox Hollow to appraise people’s “treasures” at the event. At the event, one specific item is garnering a lot of attention – an old jewellery box. Shell’s determination to find out why this jewellery box is so sought after leads her into some sticky situations with potentially dire consequences. Shell, along with her best pal Leila uncover many clues, which lead them into more dangerous situations. As I was reading, I did hope they would solve the mysteries before something happened to them. My fears are of course unfounded as this is a cozy mystery. But that says something about the writing – keeping me engaged and worried for the protagonist and everyone she drags along with her in the pursuit of truth and justice.
While reading the prologue, I wondered how this would tie into the present-day situation. I wondered how this past jewellery heist would play into the current day story? It was actually comforting to not jump right into a murder. It was a bit of a slow build. As the reading progressed, I was able to figure out a few clues and make sense of them, but by no means did I figure out the “whodunit” until the end – which is the way I like my cozy mysteries!
Many of the beloved characters that have been around since book one (Gary for example) are still in the picture – so it was like coming home and reading about all of their antics and seeing what has happened since the last book. Comfortable.
As I have come to expect, the writing of T.C. LoTempio is engaging. The cats are great characters in the book and the humans are not so shabby either 😊. Not only do the readers get to read about and try and solve a murder but we also get the added bonus of solving a cold case with respect to the jewel heist. I loved this extra dimension. Par usual – the cats ferreted out many of the clues – or at least pointed them out to Shell.
I must say – I loved the cover art. Having three cats on the cover and a picture of a dog on the wall of the office sends warm fuzzies to my heart as I love seeing the animals on the cover.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries with “a bit more “, then I suggest picking up Cats, Carats and Killers and get reading. You will not be disappointed.

Review:
The characters are well rounded and well rounded. Shell is thrilled with how well the fundraiser is doing but before long someone is killed and she has to figure out who the killer is and why they killed. She will need the help of her friends and her adorable pets.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. Whether I was reading about the fundraising or seeing what kind of trouble Purrday gets into I was very engaged. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. These books just keep getting better.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Beyond The Page, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Cats, Carats, and Killers by TC LoTiempo is mostly the story of a cold case, a jewelry store robbery from ten years earlier. It begins with a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. An antiques expert is there to appraise items brought in by the locals. Shell is a retired television actress who has inherited a Victorian mansion, a bundle of money, and a pet ship from her aunt. She was ready to quit the TV business and loved living in Fox Hollow, Connecticut. The only fly in the ointment may have been that her mother was there, also. The most exciting thing was that so many people were interested in a Victorian jewelry box that had been dropped off for appraisal. All the offers came to no good as the owner wasn’t there. Then, the cats knocked it off the desk and Shell found a diamond and a newspaper clipping when the end of the box shattered. She took it to a local woodworker to be fixed and went on her way. He found another clue. Until there was a murder.
Shell is a good character. An ex-TV spy who has landed on her feet in Fox Hollow, although she is regularly recognized. She has three cats, one adopted, one part of her inheritance, and one who has adopted her. She has a lovely boyfriend who happens to be a police detective and is currently entertaining an FBI agent who is looking to reopen the jewelry case in which a bag of diamonds had been stolen. Was the one she found part of the theft? It was a very convoluted mystery since most of it had happened in the past and the trail was pretty cold. Through research, a good memory, and some interesting coincidences, they had plenty of leads to follow. It was an intriguing mystery with clues and mis-clues abounding. This is a fun series. Thanks, TC LoTiempo.

Book Review: Cats, Carats and Killers by T.C. LoTempio
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you're looking for a thrilling mystery with a touch of charm, look no further than "Cats, Carats and Killers" by T.C. LoTempio. The story revolves around pet shop owner Shell McMillan, who finds herself entangled in a web of deceit and murder after a diamond heist from the past resurfaces.
Shell's involvement in a local animal shelter fundraiser takes a dangerous turn when a murder occurs, leading her on a quest to uncover the secrets behind a mysterious jewelry box. As she delves deeper into the case, she realizes that more lives are at stake than she initially thought.
One of the best parts of this book is its cleverly crafted plot, packed with surprising twists and turns that will keep you hooked. LoTempio's writing style is engaging and keeps the story moving at a brisk pace, making it hard to put the book down.
The characters in "Cats, Carats and Killers" are another highlight of the novel. Shell McMillan is a very likable protagonist, and the supporting cast adds depth and intrigue to the story. Their interactions and dynamics bring an extra layer of enjoyment to the narrative.
As a standalone novel, "Cats, Carats and Killers" excels in delivering a complete and satisfying mystery while leaving room for further exploration in future installments. New readers will find it easy to dive into the story without feeling lost or overwhelmed by previous events.
In conclusion, T.C. LoTempio has crafted a delightful mystery that combines elements of suspense, intrigue, and charming characters. With its well-paced plot and engaging storytelling, "Cats, Carats and Killers" is a must-read for fans of cozy mysteries. I would like to thank both NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book. Sorry it took me so long to do so. All opinions are my own.
Book Review:
I really enjoyed this book and gave it 4 stars. This book was a fast read at only 184 pages.
In this book they are doing a fund raiser for the local animal shelter. Shells mom was able to get the help from a friend who appraises antiques. The customer donates money to the shelter and then can get their item appraised. Someone has dropped off a jewelry box to get appraised since she just picked it up an estate sale. This jewelry box causes some hype because it seems like everyone wants it and is willing to pay top dollar for it. The owner wont sale until it is appraised.
Go back ten years to a jewelry heist in the small town. The jewels have never been recovered. Does this jewelry box have something to do with it since now everyone seems to have an interest in it. You will have to read the book to find out.
I really enjoy these cozy mysteries because you get involved with everyone in the story. They become to you as you read each book. I love the friendships in this book and even the mother daughter relationship.

I took a point off because this has one of the many cliche stereotypes that I can’t stand. The protagonist puts herself in danger. The unfortunate thing is that everything could have been solved way sooner if she had used common sense. That said, I pretty much figured out who most of the characters were and their roles. The killer’s background was a surprise but not who it was.
I continue to read this series because I love what the author does with the main character’s career as well as her relationships. It’s such a loving atmosphere and I would love to see an appraisal fundraiser for the animal shelters in real life. The cat characters all make me smile because I have 2 with similar personalities traits. And yes, cats do talk back. While I love how close the human characters are, I wish that there was more to the main character and her love interest. Honestly, that felt like a passing comment, an “oh by the way, we’re dating. Back to the mystery.”
Cats, Carats and Killers is the 4th enjoyable book in the Urban Tails Pet Shop cozy mystery series. The characters are likeable, the story moves at a good pace and the cozy mystery kept me guessing. Shell McMillan was formerly an actress but gave it up and moved back to Fox Hollow when she inherited her Aunt's home and pet store. In this book, Shell's pet shop is promoting a fundraiser for the local animal shelter with appraisals of people's prized possessions. The event has drawn some shady characters too. Pete Martin was a local but left and has recently returned. Pete seems intent on acquiring a beat up old jewelry box and Shell can't figure out why all the interest in it. When Pete ends up dead and a local is the primary suspect, Shell and friends start poking around. The FBI are in town looking into a jewel heist from long ago. Shell's boyfriend Detective Josh Bloodgood isn't happy she is inserting herself into his investigation. Of course Shell's cats Purrday and Princess Fuzzypants helped out. I suspected the culprit but wasn't sure until the end. I have read all of the books in this series and they continue to be enjoyable. I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley and Beyond The Page Publishing and I voluntarily leave this review. #CatsCaratsAndKillers #UrbanTailsPetShop. #NetGalley #BeyondThePage
This is book Four in the popular "Urban Tales Pet Shop Mystery Series". I have read the entire series and the author is a favorite cozy author of mine. I enjoy the descriptions of cats that are catnip to cozy cat readers. The author knows cats and writes beautifully of their antics, habits and personalities. Thank you to the publisher and to Net galley for the opportunity. My review opinons are my own..
In this next in series our favorite protagnist Shell is holding a animal rescue fun raiser. Diamonds are hidden among the many items donated in a jewelry box that many bidders are desperate for. When one most anxious to reclaim the box is murdered Shell is on the case when she finds out the contents of diamonds were part of a robbery. Her investigations skills are excellent and soon suspects abound as she finds clues among the history of the diamonds. The cats in this story are delightful and a part of every story adding fun, antics and love for Shell. The sleuth was well crafted to conclusion. I loved this next in series and look forward to the series continuing. This is series is cat cozy lover purrfection for readers.
Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of CATS, CARATS, AND KILLERS (Book 4 of the Urban Tails Pet Shop mystery series) by T.C. LoTempio in exchange for an honest review. Shell McMillan is involved in an Antiques Roadshow style fundraiser for the local animal shelter. For a donation, a volunteer antiques expert will give each person an appraisal of their old keepsakes. The organizers have even allowed absentee donors to leave their items for appraisal. One of those items is a tatty old jewelry box; it’s not much to look at, so Shell is puzzled about why multiple people have been pressuring her to sell the item that is not even hers. Also, there are multiple attempts to steal the thing. When one those people is murdered and one of Shell’s friends arrested for the killing, Shell must solve the mystery of the box to solve the murder.
I like this book and the series. I recommend this book to fans of the series and the series to fans of cozy murder mysteries featuring pet shops, retired actors, and pets.
In this fourth instalment of Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries, former actress and current pet grooming and supplies shop owner Shell McMillan is happy to be part of a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. People can bring memorabilia and collectibles for appraisal and possible sale. But when Pete Martin shows up trying to steal an old jewellery box and ends up dead, Shell is on the case to help solve the mystery.
And things just get more complicated when it’s discovered the jewellery box contains diamonds from a past heist. Martin wasn’t the only one trying to get the box, and Shell is determined to find out what’s going on and who is the killer.
The author has created an interesting cast of characters over the previous three titles and it’s great to go back to Fox Hollow and spend some time with them all again, including the cats. That said, this book can certainly be read as a stand-alone.
There’s an intriguing mystery and our heroine faces some dangerous foes as she follows the clues to figure out whodunit with plenty of feline help.
T.C. LoTempio’s fourth Urban Tails Pet Shop Mystery involves a ten-year-old jewel robbery and a current murder.
Urban Tails Pet Shop owner Shell McMillan is collecting stuff for the upcoming animal shelter fundraiser when a few individuals, including Pete Martin, seem determined to purchase an old beat-up dark walnut jewelry chest with many drawers and compartments. Things get even more interesting when Pete Martin is found murdered.
Shell decides to find the murderer and discovers the jewel box may be connected to the stolen diamonds from a robbery ten years ago. Ms. LoTempio concocts an elaborate mystery involving familiar characters and feline friends. Complex and suspense-driven, the story finds Shell working to solve the robbery to uncover the killer. The author provides a fair amount of intrigue. And felines Purrday and Cleopawtra provide a vital clue that gives Shell the key she needs.
These cats just continue to be awesome little helpers (although sometimes mischievous) when Shell’s working on a case she’s been warned off time and again, lol. A cold case tied in with the new murder and Shell found herself diving right into it. She and Gary did the sleuthing thing so well, probably from years of practice on their spy show, but he was never with her when the super exciting (or dangerous) stuff happened. That place was reserved for one of the cats (Purrday’s my fave though!).
That was some showdown! And a really good twist too although I was really happy with whodunit. I get the feeling that Shell’s mom’s idea for the next fundraiser might just be the subject of the next book. I hope so!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Beyond the Page via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
Not many pet lovers could pass up this story full of cats, animal shelters, and a pet store. Plus, the cats in this book are often heroes. It’s true they might be hungry most of the time, but nonetheless, they are excellent cats and purr often.
This story begins in the midst of a fundraiser held for the local animal shelter. A well-known antique expert has agreed to identify and estimate favorite pieces brought by the surrounding population. I thought this story moved slowly at first. Though I know it sounds rather incongruous, it seemed to pick up and roll quickly after about three-fourths of the way through.
There’s no question this is a fun read. It has what I call the normal elements of a cozy…inherited property, handsome cop, neat pets, small town, dead body, nice friends, etc. But it all turns out to be a good story.
Yippee! Another fun cozy from Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries! Shell had escaped Hollywood thanks to an elderly relative's bequest of a beloved pet shop in small town Connecticut. But unfortunately, she didn't escape her self-absorbed mother who can't imagine her daughter WANTING to leave Hollywood after a decent career in television. Shell has had a hand in solving a murder before and has an interest in the local Homicide Detective. Much of the set-up for this installment is in the publisher's blurb, but that doesn't tell you how much fun it is to read. I love the way real clues are hidden amongst the red herrings and a diabolical plot twist or two. I requested and received a free EARC copy from Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley. With people flocking to the local shelter’s fund raiser, there are a lot of interesting items that are being appraised. But one item in particular interests one attendee and he is determined that it will be his, no matter what. When the man is found dead, Shell has to find out who else knew about the hidden diamonds and was involved in the original theft of them. Because the murder is surely connected to it.
Can Shell figure out who killed Martin, or is this the last case for her? Only time will tell.
Every visit to Fox Hollow with the animals is one of the best visits. You’re guaranteed a solid whodunit, cute kitties and plenty of red herrings to keep you busy until the killer is revealed! Really enjoy this series.
Cat, Carats and Killers is one of the most fun series that I read. Former actress and current pet show owner Shell McMillan has a stall at the first Fox Hollow collectible fundraiser to benefit the local shelter. When people start offering to buy a jewelry box that has been left for appraisal, Shell wonders if it could have anything to do with the cold case of missing diamonds that Josh is working on. You'll need to read to see if it does. Once again, T.C. LoTempio has written a fun cozy with really great characters. From Shell and her cats to her overbearing mother to Gary and Josh, you really learn to love them all. The book is definitely hard to put down once you start reading so give yourself some time to enjoy the read. I can't wait for the next book.
This is a fun, entertaining read. Shell is an interesting character that I enjoyed spending time with. I do with that she had made a smarter choice at the end. I enjoyed both the human and animal characters in this story. All of the characters – especially the quirky ones – added to the fabric of the story. I enjoyed the mystery and how it played out. It had me turning the pages to figure out how all the various pieces fit together. This is my first read by LoTempio and it won’t be my last. The story is easy to read and get into.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I haven't read a book by author T.C. LoTiempo that I haven't enjoyed. Realistic and relatable characters? Check. An engaging storyline? Check. Well written dialogue? Check. Loads of quirkiness and coziness? Double check.! Cats, Carats and Killers is a charming cozy mystery that sets out to solve two mysteries - a cold case jewelry heist and a recent homicide. The hunt is on to find a gem thief and a hot-headed killer and the FBI are no match for Shell, Josh, Purrday, and Princess Fuzzypants. This is a great series for cozy mystery fans, cat lovers, and individuals who like to pick up a book to relax and forget their worries for a while.
