She woke with blood on her hands, a dead man beside her, and no memory of how she got there . . .
As CEO of a successful technology firm, Nia Anderson routinely makes split-second decisions. But now, every choice she makes could lead to life in prison or to her own untimely death. She knows freedom lies in finding the real killer. But the evidence is stacked against her, and just when Nia thinks things can’t get any worse, everything spins even more out of control.
Trained by the military in a top-secret program and now an operative for the Shadow Agency, Gage Pearson has the skills necessary to find his friend’s killer and bring the murderer to justice. When the trail of clues leads straight to Nia Anderson, he sets his sights on her. She may look innocent, but he knows deception takes many forms.
To track down the culprit, Nia and Gage must work together. But trust may prove to be as elusive as the killer. Can they flush the killer from the shadows before the darkness crashes around them?
Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.
Shadow Operative by Christy Barritt is a new series featuring the Shadow Agency that she has mentioned in the Lantern Beach Exposure series. Personally, I don’t know if I have read too many Barritt novels; I have read ninety-nine percent of them, but this novel seemed a little formulaic and really did not capture my attention. Seen these movements before. Seen this romance spark the same way before. I bet, as a writer, it is hard to come up with new plot lines all the time especially when Barritt releases a new book usually every three to four weeks. Obviously, she will come across some similar plot lines. While I wanted to like this book, I was not invested in the plot. I didn’t really care what happened to the characters, and the climactic moment was predictable and not original.
Christy Barritt never seems to disappoint me with all her books. Whenever I pick up one I know I will be taken on the ride of my life. This book did just that! I truly love Christy Barritt’s books and how she has her victims go through so much! I’ve said this before, but I’m thrilled I’m not one of the characters in her books! Her male characters are larger than life and these guys know how to protect! This is the first book in a new series by Christy Barritt and it looks like this series will be great! Imagine waking up next to a dead person with lots of blood all around and a knife next to you and you not being able to remember any of it or why you’re even here. This is the opening of this story and it just gets better and more twisted as the story unfolds. What really happened and who did it? Christy Barritt is one author who knows how to weave a tale that will leave you on the edge of your seat as you read the story. You’ll be taken on a ride like you will never believe. Her writings are always full of suspense, action, twists, and turns. This one is no different. There is so much that happens from the first page to the last that you will need to remind yourself to breathe as you read this book. (Or at least try to breathe!) The book takes us from one twist to another. We as readers, don’t know who has done it until the end. Try as I might, I’m always shaking my head and thinking, “Why didn’t I guess that?” If you LOVE “who-done-it” stories with mystery, suspense, action, and a bit of relationship tension plus romance mixed in, you will love this book! I highly recommend you pick up this book. You won’t be disappointed. I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Well, the story had potential. I’ll give the author that. But this is not for a seasoned reader. I’d say the target audience would be teen to young adult.
The way the story included both main characters' voices, basically saying things in their head from their own perspective on each point, plan, incident, or each tight spot were simply time wasters, or page fillers. It made the redundancy rate of this book go way up. My eye-rolling started about a third of the way through when I realized it wasn’t just a fluke, that the author was going to continue in this vein throughout the book.
Then there’s the mulling about each thing: "Nia didn’t know how they’d lost Cormac. It was almost as if he’d disappeared into thin air—which clearly wasn’t a possibility. But if he wasn’t down this hallway, that meant he’d probably headed to the bar. Maybe he’d ducked behind it, trying to throw them off his trail. They didn’t come all the way out here just to be waylaid again. Could Cormac still be here?" That's the female's perspective. Then you have the hardened special agent going over the same thing in his head. Ugh.
And an agent who was in special forces, has put his life in danger for years, dealt with terrorists and bad guys his whole career isn't going to say something like, "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, thanks. Let’s do that." Like some newby. And this was throughout most of the book. This kind of skilled agent is going to just nod and head out. Brevity of dialog is trained. No commentary necessary.
This just seemed off.
Sorry, but these are my own impressions. There are plenty of people who just loved this story and I’m delighted for their appreciation of it. But this book was just not for me.
"More than anything, all she wanted to do was run and hide. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option."
Nia Anderson has blood on her hands, literally . . . . but how in the world? She regains consciousness in a business acquaintance's apartment, lying beside his dead body, and has no memory of anything about the evening or Rob Lesner past their dinner meeting over a contract issue between their two companies. What does she do now?. . . . .she can run, but can she hide?
After rushing to book a flight, Gage Pearson arrives in Miami at the request of his long-time friend Rob Lesner. Rob's sense of urgency on the phone did not include a death threat, but that's exactly what Gage discovers in his friend's apartment; a dead body. Trained as a military operative, Gage immediately begins to surveil the scene, tracking down the image of a young woman from the security footage; tech executive, Nia Anderson.
Who can Nia trust? Who can Gage trust? They don't exactly trust each other, but then again they actually do want to trust each other, because a lot of things are not adding up . . . especially when Nia begins receiving text threats. Someone wants what they think she has and Gage is determined to do what he does best . . . find answers.
A really fine example of romantic suspense . . . emphasis on SUSPENSE!
I was hooked on this story from the very first page! Nia is a self-made business woman who fought hard to rise in her chosen field of technology, but when she wakes up next to the dead body of a man she was doing business with, she has no recollection of what happened, so she flees. Her last memory was having dinner with him the night before to discuss a contract. Now the killer wants something she has but she has no idea what. Gage is a secretive man, out of necessity because of his real job, and when his good friend texts him for help, he drops everything and rushes to see what he needs. He arrives at his friend's home shortly after Nia has fled. But Gage has all the knowledge and skills to follow clues, so it is not long before the evidence leads him straight to Nia. Nia claims her innocence, and memory loss, but can he trust her? Gage tells her part of the story, but she knows he's hiding things. Can she trust him? In a world of cutting edge technology, Nia and Gage have the same goal -- to find out who killed Rob, and what the killer wants from Nia, before the killer gets to them! I look forward to more installments in this new series by author Christy Barritt.
I received a free coy of this book with no obligations. The opinions are my own.
Christy Barritt's latest, Shadow Operative, marks the beginning of The Shadow Agency series. Book one features the resilient Gage Pearson, who is haunted by a shadowy past of black ops and unconventional (and possibly unethical) treatments.
The narrative unfolds dramatically as Nia Anderson wakes amidst a chilling crime scene involving her deceased business partner, Rob Lesner. The mystery deepens with Nia's amnesia, setting the stage for a riveting exploration of truth.
Gage joins Nia in unraveling this mystery, though his first step is to determine if she actually is the killer. The duo confronts their own histories, weaving a tale of redemption. Barritt masterfully sustains suspense, skillfully concealing the antagonist's identity and motives.
The story is a rollercoaster of action, keeping readers on edge. The characters, beautifully crafted, add depth to the narrative. Barritt defies clichés with a conclusion that avoids the conventional "ride off into the sunset," leaving room for future character evolution. An enthralling read, Shadow Operative promises a series brimming with potential, taking readers into a world of suspense, mystery, and character growth.
I was happy to see another series start by this author. I really liked Nia and Gage, and the way their characters complemented each other. It had a great plot. I figured out what the deal was with the memory loss before it was revealed. Well, I suspected correctly.
The bad guy was a surprise. I didn't see that coming, and the supense and drama were non-stop.
I have noticed something lately in Barritt's books that I don't think was there all along. For lack of better term: dramatic pauses. Like "Nia waited with baited breath to see what Gage would say next." I love Barritt;s books, and have more books by her than any other author, but I have to say this seems overused in her novels lately.
But it was still a great read and deserves 5 stars.
Shadow Operative s is another Christian Romance/Suspense by Christy Barritt. Though a bit repetitive and predictable, this book, like most Christian Suspense Romances, flows like a good Hallmark movie. Light and fun.
When Nia’s client and Gage’s best friend, Rob, is murdered, Nia and Gage are thrown together as they seek to discover the true killer. At first, Nia is the number one suspect in Gage’s mind, but as he comes to know her, he questions the assumption. The blend of suspense, action, and romance in this clean, Christian Contemporary Fiction book is well done with believable characters and a solid plot.
If you enjoy predictable but fun stories, like I do, I recommend Fractured Lies. It would make an entertaining beach read this summer.
I had a BETA copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Nia Anderson awoke in a business associate’s apartment with no memory of how she got there, and her associate, Rob dead next to her. Rob had called his friend Gage Pearson, a security firm operative, to come help him with a situation, and he saw that Nia had been there, so he contacted her trying to see if she had murdered his friend. As they are following leads, it becomes evident that their lives are in danger. If you enjoy suspense and mystery, this is the book for you! It’s a great start to a new series by Christy Barritt who is skilled in writing books filled with intrigue and suspense.
An exciting new series kickoff from a prolific author of great suspense. CEO Nia Anderson finds herself a potential murder suspect and must work to figure out who killed her colleague. Security operative Gage Pearson doesn’t know whether or not to trust Nia or suspect her of killing his friend. The intriguing plot unfolds as they explore who might be guilty—and there are plenty of possibilities. The mystery novel keeps readers guessing who is behind it all and why. The fast-paced tale will keep you engaged till the end then wish for more. I got a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
“Be still.” How do you be still when you wake up next to a dead man and have no memory, are receiving terrifying messages, your sister has been kidnapped, and the man you are stuck working with may be the killer? Nia and Gage share a mutual distrust and suspicion, yet it may be wise to keep your enemies close, so onward they go, working together to solve a murder. With blood literally on her hands, Nia has a lot to lose and a lot to prove, but then so does Gage. Join the roller coaster ride as they narrow down the suspects and get surprised by the true killer.
I find the conclusion of this story impossible. I don’t believe an app on an electronic device can lead to someone being hypnotized against their will. The God who created us gave us the ability to choose. This author is gifted with the ability to write and this story moves at a fast pace. I do , however, find her characters lacking in quality. A true “Christ follower “ grieves the death of another person. Just mentioning someone reading a Bible once in a story, doesn’t make them Christian. No prayers were uttered, no concern for others, especially, did they know Jesus. So , this author creates “ clean” stories. But definitely not Christian.

She woke with blood on her hands, a dead man beside her, and no memory of how she got there . . . you get drawn in from the first page!! This suspense story could be out of the page of a newspaper or magazine today. Nia doesn't know what happened or who to trust. Gage finds his friend dead and Nia is the prime suspect. As they try to trust each other and figure out who the murderer is, the stakes get higher and higher. If you like modern day suspense, you will want to read this! I received an advance copy from the author but all opinions are my own.
Shadow Operative by Christy Barritt is a fantastic novel of suspense. This novel has everything you look for in romantic suspense but the back stories of the characters make the story so much deeper and more interesting than most novels in this genre. I usually can guess what is coming, but there were a lot of twists that kept me hooked throughout. I highly recommend this novel and hope for more soon! I received a digital copy of this book from the author with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Shadow Operative is the first installment in the Shadow Agency series, a new series, by Christy Barritt. This had me hooked from the start as Nia Anderson wakes up next to her employer Rob's dead body with the murder weapon nearby and no recollection of how she ended up there. This is an intriguing mystery involving memory loss, bad guys coming after Nia, and Nia and Rob's friend Gage Pearson tracking down the real killer and discovering the motive for Rob's murder. If you enjoy a good mystery with action and suspense, this new series is for you.
A man looking for answers for his friend finds love with women who thought was suspect.
Loved being with this author again. Nia and Gage story was exciting from start to finish. Gage came to town looking for answers for his friend. Nia he thought was the chief suspect. But she was just a pawn. They went on the run to find answers. It all came back to someone in her company. In the midst of it all they fell in love. Looking forward to more in the series and her other books as well.
Terrific, action-packed story in the first of this series. From the beginning to the end this book is filled with excitement. Nia and Gage are the main characters. Each of them has interesting personalities and backgrounds. As they unravel and solve the murder of a friend, a touch of romance begins. The author’s ability to have twists throughout the story with a surprise ending. Makes this a great read.
When it comes to technology, I'm shall we say challenged. But Rob had created an app that held promise until he saw reality, that in the wrong hands it could be deadly. Then wrong hands attacked and killed him & left Nia to take the blame. If you pay attention you can figure out who the perp is. Nia escaped and hooked up with Gage to figure out the clues. Another grea5 series starter by Christy Barritt.
This book starts out with suspense from the very first page. Nia Anderson awakes in a strange room with a headache, a dead man, and no memory of what has transpired the last several hours. Who is trying to pin a murder on her? Gage has arrived in Miami at the request of his best friend who he finds dead and all the evidence points in the direction of Nia Anderson. Be sure to read this exciting story.
How scary this time in Nia’s life was. She was missing some memory and how did she get here and wake up by a dead man. Her memory blank. She had blood on her. She knew she didn’t kill him but how could she prove it? Who did she go to? This is where Shadow Operative Gage comes in the picture. Hard to put the book down and not read it straight through. Can’t wait for the next one. Enjoy Book 1 of the The Shadow Agency.
I like the storyline, the suspense, the characters, and the romance that flowed so naturally. The best part is the Faith in God that is woven into Christy Barritt's books. I enjoy all of her faith-based books! I don't have to worry about any bad language nor any detailed violence or bedroom scenes. I'm off to read the next book in this series! Thank you, Christy, for your awesome books!
This book had me guessing until the end. I listened to the audiobook on Hoopla and somehow missed who Cormac was and how he played into everything (don't worry...no spoilers). I still don't have my answer on that. Oh well.
Somehow this felt a little different than most of Barritt's books that I've read. Still has romance and suspense of course, but for me it was a little harder to follow all of the moving parts. Perhaps it was because I was simply distracted while listening.
Have you read all Christy Barritt series? Then enjoy something new and entertaining. Never read a Barritt book? Well, jump into the first of the Shadow Agency. Either way, no disappointments here.
I received a complimentary copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion.
Ms. Barritt knows how to write a page-turner. I especially liked the believability of the heroine. Her vulnerability, fear, strength, and intelligence combined made her more realistic. I pride myself on discovering the culprit before the good guys, but I couldn't do it. I don't think I have with any of her books.
Shadow Operative, first book in the new Shadow Agency series, had me intrigued from the first paragraph! Lots of twists and turns and though the culprit was on my radar, the ending still surprised me 😲😊 I look forward to reading the subsequent novels in this series. Thanks, Christy!
How do people come up with such good plots? This was excellent. I never figured it out until the end when the clues came together. I also enjoyed how her writing has gotten better. I don’t need a nail biter on every page, but some build up and other details to complete the picture. This had all that. Thank you .christie for a really good novel.
I’ve read so many of Christy Barritt’s books and she is one of my favorite authors! This was actually one of my favorites. Very fast paced and hard to put down (I read it in 2 days)! Looking forward to the next one in this series.
