The author hasn't done a very good job of actually reading the texts he's dealing with. He makes lots of incorrect statements about the details of various stories that are right there in the text. The outdated archaeology, textual theories and other information can be forgiven. It's an old book, he was working with ideas current at the time. Mistakes about what details are in the text he's reading, not so much.
