Beaux

Chris Andrews and her best friend, Junie, exercise their vivid (and productive) minds and imagination to secure beaux for Chris' lovely older sister. Of course, such a task is not enough to occupy the entire time of two such energetic young girls. They accidentally manage to help a falsely convicted man escape from a chain gang, perform valiant services on the home front during World War I, and emerge, to their great surprise, as Attractive Girls.

The talented N. M. Bodecker's gentle caricatures add further love and laughter to the story.

Evan Commager was married to historian Henry Steele Commager, and lived with him in Amherst, Massachusetts. She wrote four books for children, and her Southern upbringing is reflected in her writing. She also spent summers in Vermont which she loved as much as her native South Carolina.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! It's politically incorrect, as it was written decades ago, about the south, but the voice is hilarious and the characters are wonderful, and Bodecker's art is, as always, awesome!

I had fallen in love with this author (wife of the famous historian Henry Steele Commager) years ago, finding her book, Cousins, unexpectedly in the Chappaqua, NY library because of its winsome N.M. Bodecker illustrations. This book is just as charming and has echoes of Betsy-Tacy in the heroines' plotting.
