I really enjoyed this book as the story went forward. The first part of the book seemed to be a recap of the first book in the series, all over again. I felt that instead of a long tale about Lady Alice first season ending in her father’s ruin, it could have been condensed. That is why I gave it four stars. There was just to many similarities. Once Alice met The Lord , of her dreams, and began to hope things improved. It became a mystery, and was a very good read. I enjoyed the mystery, and the ending. The reader already knows what a wallflower is, and in book one the ladies refuse to be set aside, due to a new friend. That happens exactly the same in this book. I nearly lost interest, and put it down, for lack of imagination. I’m glad I hung on because the story did get better. Clean mystery, and romance.

A clean story. This one was not for me. I found Lord Sedgwick an absolute wimp, and not believable. He is a Marquis, apparently upstanding and a straightforward gentleman, yet immediately does whatever is suggested by very forward debutantes and then spends ages regretting that he did so. I think there would be quite a lot of gossip about those ladies and how forward they were, and he would have stood his ground, and not been so easily swayed. And then Cartwright corners Alice in the ballroom with people all around and is about to kiss her against her will. Alice may have become a wallflower but such behaviour by Cartwright would have been frowned upon and not tolerated. The ton would have been very concerned that he would then start picking on their daughters, so not realistic. Lastly when the poisoner is uncovered no authorities are called, just, maybe we will let a few people know to spread the word The man is a poisoner, and potentially a murderer as the last dose could have killed Sedgwick. And why? Because he does not like competition over a lady he wishes to pursue. Of course he needs detaining!! Also he wasn’t the only Lord upset that someone might pursue the lady they wished to declare to, warning off other men. It’s the season! Ladies are seeking suitors and I am sure the ladies concerned albeit very forward etc would have had quite a few callers and suitors. It just wasn’t done to frighten away suitors, and that would not endear the ladies to them, and the gossip would spread. Why did they just not offer for said ladies? I am sorry I found this story just lacking.

Lady Alice was having a delightful debut season until the moment her father’s disgrace became known. Determined, her mother has brought her back to London the following year but no one pays her the least bit of attention, save for the other wallflowers with whom she has struck up a friendship. When a chance encounter has her dancing with Simon the Marquis of Sedgewick, Alice hopes that her situation might change, only for the Marquess to fall suddenly ill right in her arms! Then it happens again. Lady Alice is concerned so the couple decide to work together to find the culprit aided by the other wallflowers.
I really liked both Simon & Alice, they are attracted to each other but their fledgling feelings are tested by some members of the ton. I love a romance with a mystery & this book had both. Strong characters & a well paced story had the pages flying by. The villain wasn’t too hard to work out but I would have liked them to have suffered more. A well written easy to read romance
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

1: apparently to be a wallflower in this novel isn't about being a shy or not pretty person but is akin to something like the leper colony, where association with them is SUPER BAD (unless you're a rapist).
2: the word wallflower must appear in every other paragraph, hundreds of times throughout the book. It's lost all meaning now, I'll be happy if I never read that word again in my life.

At the center of this series is a group of young ladies, considered to be wallflowers, who hang around at the edges of ballrooms and are never asked to dance. They are ignored and ridiculed by the rest of society. This begs the question, why do they go to these events? If they are persona non grata, why are they even invited in the first place? In this story, Lady Alice joins the group because her father lost a lot of money gambling and whoring. His disgrace is her family's disgrace. He's an earl, and those types of pursuits were not at all uncommon among the upper class. Even those who were pockets-to-let were common in ballrooms. We're told that the earl's estate is profitable, so he wasn't even penniless. Why was he in disgrace?

Lady Alice and her mother manage to get an invitation to a ball, because her mother's friend, who is hosting it, ignores the family's downfall. After that, she appears in every other ball of the Season. How did they manage to secure those invitations? It isn't explained. Plot hole. In the beginning, Lady Alice's mother interacts with her. After that, not a single word is spoken between them. Her mother vanished into thin air while Lady Alice's life was a whirlwind. Surely she would have brought her mother into her confidence.

Lord Sedgewick is the handsome male protagonist who is looking for a wife. He is quiet, not given to excesses. He claims to be uninterested in marrying for love, even arguing with a friend that it's the opposite of what he wants. That makes little sense, but Sedgewick is a bit of a slow-top. When someone poisons him twice in a ballroom, he doesn't recognize the obvious suspects. He is kind, however, and rescues Lady Alice from the advances of a rake. He happened to be dancing the waltz with her on the occasion of both poisonings. There is a mutual attraction there which quickly develops, in spite of her societal ostracism.

The biggest flaw in the story is that there are zero consequences for the man who attempted to murder Lord Sedgewick. He just lets him walk away, free to harm others for a frivolous and selfish reason. In book 1, the word 'mayhap' was used 33 times. In this one, it is used 50 times! They are multiplying like rabbits.

Protecting the Wallflower . . .

Because of her father’s disgrace, society begins to shun Lady Alice. When she gets another opportunity as her mother brings them back to London, it is obvious that she is still not accepted. She joins the other wallflowers and does make some friends. But she is missing out on so much by this unfair treatment.

When Simon, the Marquess of Sedgewick, sees Lord Cartwright making unwanted advances to one of the wallflowers, he was unwilling to ignore the crass behavior. Lord Cartwright was touching Alice’s arm inappropriately, ignoring her objections and making her terribly uncomfortable. He had found out who her father was and felt he had the right to take liberties with her which he felt did not give her any protection as the other ladies are given. So as the obnoxious Lord Cartwright tried to force a kiss on Alice, the man was dragged backwards away from her and reprimanded loudly by Lord Sedgewick for such atrocious behavior. He further warned Lord Cartwright to stay away from ALL of the wallflowers, and he told the man that he was a disgrace! The other gentlemen, though they did not help, were all nodding in agreement with Lord Sedgewick.

Lord Sedgewick finds himself thinking often of Lady Alice and finally asks her to dance. But as are dancing, he becomes strangely ill and their dance is ended prematurely. A repeat of the illness occurs again at a later time and they wonder if someone trying to harm Lady Alice, or has Lord Sedgewick been the target? Will the two of them join forces and try to find the truth of the matter? Who might be causing Simon to become ill and why? And as they investigate together, are Simon and Alice beginning to recognize a true attraction for each other?

The Wallflower’s Midnight Waltz is the second book in the Waltzing with Wallflowers series by Rose Pearson, and I am enjoying the series very much.

Lady Alice is being shunned by society because of her father’s bad behavior. She returns to London, is not well received, and becomes friends with a few other wallflowers. She immediately notices, Simon, the Marquess of Sedgewick but realizes due to her father’s disgrace she doesn’t have a chance of gaining his attention.

However, a chance encounter gives them and opportunity to dance but he suddenly becomes ill and has to leave the dance floor. The next time they are dancing the same thing occurs. Why is this happening? Is it directed at Lady Alice, Simon or at them both?

Alice and Simon work together to try to determine why he falls ill every time they dance together. As they spend time together, Simon can no longer deny his growing affection for Alice. Unfortunately, society is fickle and no longer looks at Lady Alice as a viable option for a Marquess because of her father’s misdeeds.

As feelings are changing they have a mystery to solve which brings this lovely couple closer. They methodically approached all the potential people who might want to harm Simon and the culprit was caught.

I continue to be entertained by Rose Pearson’s clean romance books, her characters are interesting and diverse. This story was the best of both worlds, it had romance and I love when a couple comes together to solve a mystery.

Life in Regency England was not for the faint of heart with its traditions and unspoken rules. A child is affected by the “sins” of his/her parents and is shunned by society, making them Wallflowers, a group who must remain on the edges of events and cannot speak to the “ton” unless spoken to. The season is a “marriage mart” with families looking to make the best possible matches, and wallflowers have very little hope. I loved that a group of the wallflowers decides to flaunt the rules. They are met with a mixture of disdain and admiration. Simon, who simply wants to marry in order to “check the box,” is jaded enough to think it’s not possible to marry for love. Through a series of events, the wallflowers come to his attention, and he finds himself embroiled between them and those who shun them. The author has captured the era through the cadence of dialogue reminiscent of the writers of the period, but a bit easier to follow, and the descriptions of the attire and lavish ballrooms. It was nice to see the “mean girls club” get their comeuppance. A bit of mystery and intrigue added depth to the story.

The heroine was being presented to society and then her father’s poor financial situation becomes known so they retire to the country. Then next season she is back, but relegated to the Wallflower group. The hero is a marquess and has decided to find a wife so he is in high demand. He rescues her from an obnoxious lord and offers her a dance. He becomes violently sick during it. Then the mystery begins on why and who is doing this to him. This ordeal only draws them closer. I really get upset when the whole family is ostracized due to one person’s scandal. Some of the secondary characters, like his friend and the other wallflowers are very nice, but others are rude and self centered. It was a good clean read.

The Wallflower’s Midnight Waltz is the second book in the Waltzing with Wallflowers.
Although this mentions some characters from book one it is in itself a stand alone story.

This is a sweet clean story with a little mystery to solve as well.

Lady Alice is relegated to being a wallflower not because she has done anything wrong but due to her father’s bad behaviour

“When a chance encounter has her dancing with the Marquess of Sedgewick, Alice hopes that her situation might change, only for the Marquess to fall suddenly ill right in her arms!”

There is a mystery to solve – why has Simon fallen ill not once but twice at a ball.
Lady Alice and Simon start to get closer as they try to solve this mystery.
This is a lovely sweet clean romance.

Enjoying her time socializing and going to balls, it all came to a halt when Lady Alice’s fathers disgrace became public. Even though he was an Earl, society wanted nothing to do with her, so she became a wallflower. She soon became friends with the other wallflowers. One ball her eyes connected with the Marquess of Sedgewick and even though he was drawn to her, he knew nothing would come of it. Lord Sedgewick asked her to dance and before the dance could be completed, he because violently sick. When it happened a second time, he knew he was the target. As Lady Alice offered to help him find the culprit, they worked together with the help of her friends and his close friend to try to solve this mystery. A good clean enjoyable story.

I didn’t like Lord Sedgewick at the beginning. His attitude about relationships and marriage seems to be affected by his parents and he cannot see past their behaviour. However, when he rescued Lady Alice from an untenable situation, I saw another side of him and was cheering them on for the remainder of the book. When they begin working together trying to figure out who wants to harm Simon, their feelings for each other blossom. The reveal of the culprit was well thought out. I highly recommend this book.

How dreadful to be shunned because of her father’s actions, this was the situation for Lady Alice. She has now joined the wallflowers at events. Alice seemed a little lost at times but gains confidence from the other wallflowers. I was glad that the wallflowers decided to take some action of their own. Lord Sedgewick, is looking for a bride that will suit him, he’s not particularly interested in love. Several events bring them together and there is a mystery to solve. This was an enjoyable read, although I did wish that Sedgewick had been more direct with certain ladies. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. The Ton has relegated Lady Alice as a wallflower to remain in the shadows at balls, to be invisible. But the Marquess of Sedgewick notices her and invites her to dance. Illness strikes the Marquess during his dance with Lady Alice. Then it happens a second time – now it is no longer a coincidence, but someone is trying to harm him. Lady Alice and the Marquess attempt to figure out the culprit.

Lady Alice had a wonderful first season until her father fell into disgrace. She now finds herself shunned by the Ton. The realness of how this happened in the time is well done. The spitefulness of the Ladies of the Ton is spot on as well as their escapades to embarrass the Lady. Rose does such a wonderful job with every aspect. I love her books.

This book will make you not want to put it down from the beginning. All the twists, surprises, intrigue, and drama, will not let you down. I loved how Alice’s mind works and how determined she is to make things right. Simon changes his whole way of thinking, I enjoyed his confidence. There are some really ruthless types in this era.

Most of us can relate to family disgrace in some form - probably not to the extent of Alice and the TON though.
Lord Sedgewick (Simon) has his own issue to deal with, especially when dancing with Lady Alice. Searching for answers bring these 2 sweet people closer together.
Grab your copy and enjoy some not so nice people - yes you Lord Cartwright, some amazing people, help solve the mystery and see if Alice and Simon can conquer.

clean romance

Fun and quick read with strong women who rise above unfair expectations from society. This second book in the series is a stand alone but follows the group of wallflowers.
The hero and heroine in this installment are thrown into a mysterious situation that they work to solve together. Of course, as they do romance seems to creep in and they must decide whether to fight the attraction or not.

Lady Alice, daughter of the Earl of Talbot, ended up as wallflower after her father was disgraced. This didn't stop her from falling in love when she came back to London for a 2nd season. Lord Sedgwick who was a Marquess caught her attention. She disliked being a wallflower because of her father she didn't have much of a choice. This Pearson has written a wonderful book and I recommend that you read it...

I like this series about the forgotten wallflowers of Regency times. In this book, Lady Alice is tossed aside by society because of her Father's disgrace. Thankfully, she makes friends with other wallflowers and even has a chance to dance with a charming gentleman. But, alas, he suddenly takes ill in the middle of their dance! Will the Ton despise her even more for this? Or is something bigger going on?
This was a clean, sweet read. Looking forward to more books in this series.

It is interesting, although a tad redundant. Put the drink down or bring a flask already. lol! It’s a short, fun read overall, but there are some occurrences that aren’t accurate to the time, i.e lack of chaperones, overt verbal and physical attacks in the presence of company. The cruelty they endure lacks a bit of subtlety here.

Still, it’s an interesting read. In the two I’ve read so far, there’s a charm in how the characters fall in love. I’ll read the next in the series.

Really Great Regency Series

A really great Regency book by one of my favorite authors. I loved Lord Sedgewick and Lady Alice's story. It's full of mystery and intrigue as well as romance. She has been disgraced by her father and he doesn't think love is important for marriage but when he comes to her defense everything changes. A really great read.

Lady Alice, shunned due to her fathers' disgrace, feels she will never be able to find a gentleman to marry. Then a chance encounter with the Marquis of Sedgewick and a dance give her hope. However, society is not accepting of this and cause complications. I enjoyed the book and will definitely recommend.

Good read

Clean romance. This is the first book I've read in this series. I've never read a story where the wallflowers were treated so badly. Where one could be attacked and totally ignored by everyone else. It did lead to Alice meeting Simon, but it still bothers me. Not sure I'll read more.

A mystery illness…

Lady Alice is being given the cut direct because her father is a shady sort. She makes friends with the wallflowers and dances with Simon, Lord Sedgwick. But he gets sick every time they dance.

The Rebel

Interesting angle. Very different from usual debutante stories. Courage to stand up
And a wonderful hero
The dance between the two towards each other is delightful.
The mystery adds a bit of spice but without distracting from the main story line.
