To assert that this work is merely a “stylistic masterpiece,” as many do, is a slight to Montaigne. Here, we find one of the greatest arguments in favor of liberalism and democracy.

Look for the apparent contradiction in the “To The Reader.”

Montaigne writes in an esoteric fashion, not only to protect himself from persecution, but to defend philosophy as a rhetorical art.
