Sherlock Holmes: Three Tales of Betrayal

Rate this book
[Read by Edward Hardwicke]

Cases of betrayal haunt these three masterful tales starring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's cunning, brilliant ''A Scandal in Bohemia,'' ''Silver Blaze,'' and ''The Adventure of the Copper Beeches.''

''A Scandal in Bohemia'' is a story of love, intrigue, and scandal as Holmes first encounters New Jersey born opera singer Irene Adler.
In ''Silver Blaze,'' a trusted horse trainer is murdered; Holmes and Watson are on the case, but a strange knife and a missing horse confuse the investigation.
In ''The Adventure of the Copper Beeches,'' beech trees in the front of a mysterious house expose betrayal.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Not what I was expecting from Sherlock Holmes. The plot didn't reveal Sherlock's brilliance like I was hoping.

Classic Sherlock Holmes. Good reading. These are my least favorite SH stories, but they are still good.

I think maybe I just don’t really like old detective stories. I prefer the BBC series.

I listened to these on my drive from VA to UT. I loved them! It is so impressive to me that these stories are still captivating, entertaining, and so clever. Silver Blaze references "the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime". They are read very well and I'll be looking for more in the future.

The 3rd of the 3 disks was recorded in reverse order: last track first, therefore, I only could listen to 2 of the 3 stories. This is the first Sherlock Holmes book I actually read, and I expected more.

It's not surprising that this character has stood the test of time. Generations have been inspired to pursue this genre of stories thanks to his literary brilliance. Out of the 3 stories in this book I was hooked to the first and last one. The second one was a little dry for my liking.
