I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway.

I don't normally read biographies. I have a hard time connecting with the characters in them because they are real people. "They go through hardships just like I do, so why should I read about their lives" is the reasoning I have behind it.

This book was written really well. The story was easy to follow, and was told beautifully. However, it just didn't grab my attention. I really wanted to feel for Dolly in all the hardships that she had faced and overcome.

It was an overall ok read, and I would recommend it for people that like nonfiction and biographies.

I won this book as a Goodreads Giveaway.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed being carried along as a spectator to the experiences detailed during Dolly's long life. I'm in awe of what she lived through and of the changes in the world that unfolded as she watched. Her daughter did a beautiful job honoring her Mother by passing on all her stories in a compelling and beautiful way. I would prefer to give this book 3.5 stars, but as that isn't an option I am happy to bump it up to 4 stars.

I won this book on a giveaway on Good Reads.
While i enjoyed this book very much ,I believe in part because I myself grew up in a poor farming area and could identify with meny events in this book .
Dolly is a very couragous lady filled with love and determination to honour her mother's wish to keep the family together .
It was very interesting reading ,but at times I had to go back and see which brother or sister was brought back into the events.
Over all I found Dolly to be a very strong and motivated lady with huge responsibilities in life .I really enjoyed this book and think the Author did a wonderful job of telling her Mother's story .Generations of her family to come will treasure the telling of Dolly's life story .This book is also filled with meny pictures of the family and friends which help bring to life all the people in Dolly's life .
i would very much recommend this book but especially to those who enjoy reading about history and the lives of those who have journeyed before us.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading, DOLLY Her Story by Dolly’s daughter, Jane Ruggles Pinel! The author weaves in much of her mother’s writing into an inspiring and delightfully well-written memoir. Times were so different for women and nurses in many ways in the early to mid 1900s and the memories are described so vividly that I almost felt like I was meeting Dolly.

Her life was not an easy one in many ways and as the second of ten children she faced enormous responsibilities when her father and shortly later, mother passed away unexpectedly. As a young woman she carried her own mother’s dying wishes to keep the family together in her heart and soul. I don’t want to give away details to the story, but her path to becoming a nurse and going from living in a remote and northern part of Canada to life in Boston, MA were fascinating. In fact, I’d have to say she was a nurse entrepreneur long before the term came into being. Oh and there is a great story about one of her first experiences with a patient with dementia where she demonstrated an admirable assertiveness I thought!

If you enjoy learning about the history women and/or nursing, I guarantee you’ll enjoy this book. Dolly was a quiet kind of heroine with a strength, compassion, and persistence that reflect positively on both! Her nursing career spanned World War I, the Spanish Flu Epidemic, the Great Depression, and World War II! I would have liked to meet her and oddly we share the same birthday.
