He loves to watch the flames. It’s even better when the screaming starts.
Somebody is targeting police officers in the worst way imaginable – burning them alive in a series of large-scale arson attacks.
When DCI Jane Phillips and the Major Crimes Unit are assigned to the case, forensic evidence suggests the fires display the unique signature of Manchester’s most prolific arsonist, Archie Pearson.
There’s only one problem - Pearson has been in prison for almost twenty years.
As the team delve deeper, it becomes clear that the evidence used to convict Pearson two decades ago was deeply flawed. And Jane is finally forced to confront something she has feared for some time – corruption may run all the way to the top of the Force.
A fear that only grows when the killer goes viral, claiming Pearson was framed by bent cops and that he is Manchester’s ‘Real Fire Starter’.
Can Jane catch the killer before he chooses his next victim? And will she identify the senior officers who conspired to put an innocent man behind bars? Or is her beloved Major Crimes Unit about to be engulfed by a Deadly Inferno?
Deadly Inferno – book 11 in the gripping detective series featuring DCI Jane Phillips.

Hailing from Yorkshire, OMJ Ryan worked in radio and entertainment for over twenty years, collaborating with household names and accumulating a host of international writing and radio awards. In 2018 he followed his passion to become a full-time novelist, writing stories for people who devour exciting, fast-paced thrillers by the pool, on their commute – or those rare moments of downtime before bed. Owen’s mission is to entertain from the first page to the last.
Jane is at a crossroads, she has to choose between going against her enemy in the force and exposing all wrongdoings compromising a senior officer, or keeping quiet and working behind the scenes. Deadly Inferno is a story that involves police corruption, the culture of pushing things under the rug, and how nasty events may shape a person's life. It has a great plot, strong characters, and moments with deep empathy among characters (as it so happens in real life). Highly recommended!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of Deadly Inferno, the eleventh novel to feature DCI Jane Phillips of Greater Manchester Police.
An arsonist is setting fire to venues full of off duty police officers. The forensics suggest a link to Manchester’s most famous arsonist, Archie Pearson, who has been in prison for the last seventeen years. When Jane and the team dig deeper they begin to suspect that Pearson was framed using flawed evidence. How deep does the corruption run?
I thoroughly enjoyed Deadly Inferno, which is a fast moving novel with some unexpected twists and turns. The novel is told mostly from Jane and the investigation’s point of view, but there are enough contributions from #realfirestartermanchester as he dubs himself before going viral to make it very interesting.
The novel has a great premise, starting with why someone is targeting the police and why now when Pearson has been in prison for so long. Obviously a copycat or maybe not. The author then introduces Pearson’s case and the whiff of corruption to the mix, so there is never a dull moment. The investigation starts slowly as they have very little to go on, but they work what they have and gradually they find a suspect. This comes earlier than in some novels and morphs from investigation to hunt as they try to stop him. The final showdown is both sad and satisfying in what it reveals and the last chapter gave me a tremendous amount of schadenfreude in its neat twist.
I like Jane and her team, who work well together and are never less than dedicated. They are united in their distaste for the psychopathic Chief Constable, Kim Fox, who keeps the pressure on, but is somewhat subdued, i.e. not on a rampage as usual. Jane is having relationship difficulties and this must be the first novel I have ever read where the detective is unhappy with the number of hours their partner is working, another neat twist.
Deadly Inferno is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
I was absolutely delighted to receive this book from Netgalley having read all the rest of the series. Jane and her team are one of the best in the business, and they all work together just fine. However, there is one exception, a huge fly in the ointment - Fox. She is absolutely horrid and has no time for anyone or anything other than to further her career.
However, this time someone seems hell bent on getting even with the police, he’s setting fire to buildings where the police are having social evenings. He loves the flames and the screams. All the evidence and forensics point to it being Archie Pearson, but that doesn’t seem possible as he’s inside one of Manchesters prisons and has been for the past twenty years. Jane and her team have to find out who is behind all these crimes before it’s too late and an innocent man spends any more time in jail.
What follows is absolutely brilliantly written and I was so pleased with the outcome I could have hugged the author. I’m not saying anything more but would just say read the books in order because this will spoil the earlier ones.
Coupled with the fact Manchester is my place of birth and I was able to follow it round and knew all of the places.
My thanks to Netgalley and the author for the ARC. Please write another one quickly, I want to know more …..
Deadly Inferno is a great read and an excellent addition to the authors Detective Jane Phillips series.
I feel like I love and know the characters really well now and enjoyed being back with them and following their investigation into a fire that targets police officers and may link to a historic investigation - has an innocent man been wrongly convicted? I like the working rapport and friendships the team members have, they work well together and complement each other. Cannot stand Fox though. The authors writing style is engaging and always draws me straight into the story. I like that it is told mostly through Phillips from her investigation with some parts told by the fire starter, which gave more depth to the story and added to my enjoyment. The glimpses into the characters home and personal lives is a lovely touch. The story is fast paced and full of tension and suspense at times which certainly held my attention and interest throughout and I think the book has a fitting ending and I'm looking forward to the next one.
If you like good, solid police procedurals then this book and series is for you. If you're new to this author I'd suggest you read the books in order to get to know the characters from the beginning.
Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
3.5 hearts
The Detective Jane Phillips series has a regular set of characters, some of them have a bit repetitive behavior if you've seen it over several books. Or at least, their personalities are consistent. Jane has been in the same position throughout the series and enjoys her work. She can get tired or frustrated or shaken like anyone who sees such horrors of death.
In the current big case, there is a firestarter who seems determined to kill cops. His methods seem very similar to another case from 17 years ago. Jane and her team do the usual investigating which seems smart enough but also very slow. They have the usual great support from Carter (Jane's boss) and the usual pressure and derision from Fox (Carter's boss). The team does get a bit further on an overall cop corruption case, also.
Personally, Jane is irritated by her partner, Sam, and they spend almost no time together. I'm not sure where that is going, but she seems attracted to another guy now. One of her team, Bov, is distracted by a health scare for his partner.
Overall, this was a quick, fun read. I found the writing of the personal aspects a bit stilted or typical cliche interactions. The action of the crimes and investigation steps kept me engaged. I enjoyed Deadly Inferno and wonder what is next for this favored series of mine.
Having recently discovered the Detective Jane Phillips Series i have devoured each and every book sinse and caught up with the series. That is until I realised i had jumped from book 9 to book 11. Just discovered i'd missed Deadly Veil which is now downloaded on my kindle ready for me to start today.
What a superb series of books this has turned into. We follow a team of detectives who have so much thrown at them it's a wonder they can function. I love a good detective team that work together to get things done. I enjoy the function, the banter between the characters. The storylines are interesting and fresh. ~I have enjoyed each and every book so far and look forward to seeing what OMJ Ryan can deliver next. He has his work cut out to keep improving on this series. Superb, addictive reading.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for this book which I have read as a Review copy. This review is based on my reading this book and is an honest unbiased opinion.
The series and the author are new for me and this happens to be the 11th book in a series. I picked this book with an open mind, expecting a good story. The protagonist and star of the show is in the Manchester police as a DCI, Jane Phillips who faces off this time around with an arsonist who is after places full of police people and links to a convicted local arsonist. The fresh look seems to pint to flawed evidence and the story starts with a fast pace. Yes there are some familiarity for series characters but not too much to distract a new reader. The book can be read as a standalone although reading the other adventures will be a good experience. Corruption in police set-up is not a novel premise but the story is well written and the corruption juxtaposed with the arson case and the current arsonist makes for an intriguing reading. I would like to read some of Ryan's other stories about Jane. Loved and recommended.
This series shows no sign of any dip in quality. This is yet another cracker that I found hard to put down. The start is guaranteed to have you hooked with someone setting fire to a venue where there is a police event, after having ensured the exits were blocked. It's clear that someone has a deadly grudge against the police when a second arson attack is committed.
Jane and her team are baffled as the links to a convicted arsonist mount but he is still in prison. The usual antagonism is there with Fox, and as much as Fox really annoys me, I quite enjoy the bitter relationship between her and Jane. It adds some spice to the overall storyline. There are some personal events also happening here so its not just a standard police procedural and having grown to love this team through all the series so far, I feel a connection with them and feel the suffering they go through. I also love the ending! Can't wait for the next one.
With an arsonist causing havoc, Detective in Charge Jane Phillips and her team have their hands full uncovering the culprit targeting their fellow cops. There's a compelling story arc reinforced through vivid descriptions and character building. Throughout the series, we get chances to learn more about the team members through their challenges - some personal and some work-related - and this time Bov gets the spotlight.
In addition, the back story involving the firestarter's motivation has a very satisfying end for those who've been following the series and the politics involving top brass in the Manchester force. Enough said!
Having purchased the first 10 books in this series, I was privileged to get a first crack at the newest chapter in advance of release. It's safe to say I'm a big fan who looked forward to Deadly Inferno and whatever will come next in the Jane Phillips series!

YES!!!!! What a book. Filled with drama. Being back with the team again was fantastic. Slotting right back into their roles, reading this feels like you are back with old friends. Someone is out there plotting and planning, harming police officers, Bov isn't himself, Fox is her same horrible (I'm being polite!) self. Who is behind the recent fires, has an innocent man served 17 years behind bars? There are a few people of interest, but time is running out. I loved this book! But please don't let it be the last one 🙏
It wasn't the pointer sisters that sang we are family, it was sister sledge! Surely any writer would have checked his facts😄. Brilliant storytelling. I was surprised at Jane being referred to as Phillips, normally women get called by their Christian names in books, but that's probably just me! I'm really pleased how it all came together in the end,but not in the way I thought it would. I would highly recommend all the books in this series, and I hope its not too long before we have a new case for Jane.
A fan of the entire series, I continue to be swept away by the deeply crafted characters and the sizzling pace of the denouement. My only problem with this volume is the final face-off. There are fatal factual errors in the description of devices used. I'm astonished and deeply disappointed that these mistakes were Not corrected! It came close to ruining the whole book for me. Please learn the facts when using incendiary materials to carry your finale. You missed the boat!
I've read the first four books of this series and I enjoyed them a lot. Now that I've read this book I just realized I have to read the rest of the series. So I've put them on my wishlist. I can absolutely recommend this series: good stories, nice charachters, enough suspense to keep you reading. Thumbs up! I received an advance review copy for free and I'm leaving a voluntary and honest review.
I found this book to be very suspenseful and action-packed. The suspense kept me interested in reading through the book. The book is a good stand-alone read, however, after some research and learning that there are more books in the Detective Jane Phillips series, I will be putting those on my wish list and reading them in order. I will also reread this book. I highly recommend this read. I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book.
DCI Jane Phillips and the Major Crimes Unit has a horrifying case. Someone is targeting police officers by burning them alive in a series of horrendous attacks. Jane begins her investigation and it has all the earmarks of a prolific arsonist Archie Pearson. One slight problem---Pearson has been in prison for 20 years. As the investigation continues it looks like maybe Pearson wasn't guilty all those years ago and they have the wrong man.
Wow what an ending. Good once I'm pleased Townsend got the news, she did the right thing. Just wish there was another book to read about what happens to fix. I'm gonna miss these characters they seem so real like you really know them but that's the magic of such a great either. Seriously if you not read this series you need to and I promise your in for a treat. Amazing series in savings come to an end 😪
This is a well written thriller with strong characters and an intriguing storyline. The author brings an action packed story filled with suspense and kept me reading from start to finish. The scenes are painted perfectly and the story flows fluidly. Loved and recommend reading.

I loved reading Deadly Inferno. Once I started reading this book I was hooked. I had a hard time putting my tablet down. This book is full of wonderful drama. I don't want to provide any spoilers but this book is a must read!! I can't wait to read more!!.

I really enjoyed how good everything worked in this universe. The characters felt like they were supposed to and worked in the genre perfectly. I enjoyed how tense the story was and how it worked in this world.

I think this has to be the best OMJ Ryan book I've read (read all of the Jane Phillips books) it has been a phenomenal series. It is amazingly written whereby each book grips you by the first page. Some books are a chore to read but these I genuinely think I would go back and read again. So glad to have come across this author 😁
DCI Jane and her crew have done it again with another intensely engaging story. They were given a puzzle with so little to go on, which had them searching and digging into the past for clues. Although it was intriguing, gripping, and delightfully captivating, I believed the Fox didn’t get her just reward.
Good police thriller, suspenseful,, action packed story. I thought it was well worth reading. Has a gripping plot and good characters..The suspense will keep you turning pages. Given arc by Net Galley and Inkubator for my voluntary review
Wow this is a very enjoyable novel it is a great crime Thriller I very much enjoyed this well written storyline the author did a great job with this novel.

Not quite, but she got her comeuppance. I have read every book in order and could not wait for this to happen. I’m a big fan of the MCU, Phillips, Jonesy, Bov and Entwhistle. I’m ready for the next one now.
