Ummm, this book was fkn amazing. First off, it's extremely brutal and gory. I would say it leans heavy on horror/ horror fantasy. There are a LOT of strong themes here. Some off of the top of my head are extreme body horror, sa, lost family/ child death, partner loss, s*xual content, and just tons and tons of violence. The world building was phenomenal and probably some of the best I've read in a good while. The main character is incredibly complex and relatable in his thoughts. There is a budding romance, which is fun to watch unfold. If you like werewolf/ vampire stories, definitely check this out. The back story to their existence is unique and detailed. I really enjoyed the lore that was given throughout.
I will say, you can see Devin get more and more comfortable with writing as the book goes on. By the end, the pacing and everything seems super fleshed out and flows well. In the beginning, the flow is a little different, and there are some grammatical mistakes and typos. None of these things bothered me in the slightest, but I know it can bother some people.
Overall, I really enjoyed getting to know the main character, and I really felt like I understood a lot of his morals and views on the world, which was really refreshing. The story is so different and unique, and I loved that the ending was a soft cliffhanger for what is to come in the next novel (which I hear he just recently finished writing!!)
Congrats on a fantastic debut novel! Can't wait to read the next one.

Tons of good quotes in this book, check out my highlights 👌

So, I came across this book purely by my FYP on TikTok. I made the decision to download it, even though it was not my typical genre of books to read. From the first word to the last, I was sucked in. The in depth explanations and descriptions were crucial in this story and the plot twist at the end, *chef’s kiss*! You will not be disappointed with Bloodlust and I am already counting down the days until the second book is released!

I really enjoyed the world-building in Bloodlust. The setting and lore were well-developed, making it easy to get lost in the story. One of my favorite aspects was the descriptions of the undead—some were so blunt that they had me chuckling. It was a nice balance of eerie and entertaining.

I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator had a really pleasant voice that suited the story well. However, I did find that while driving, the audio sometimes got drowned out unless I turned the bass way down.

Overall, Bloodlust was an enjoyable read, and I definitely think my husband will love it too—I plan to have him listen next!

I'm so glad this book came across my TikTok. It has my mind spinning with all the twists and turns. I appreciated the author's descriptive detail and world-building. I enjoyed the use of his dreams for flashbacks in character development. When Syrus was in lycan form I just kept picturing the lycans from the movie Underworld.

I want to see how his relationship with his daughter develops since they were locked away from each other for 2 years. This man would move heaven and earth for his daughter and kind of did throughout the book. He faces so many of the demons that have haunted him for most of his life. The only con for me was the romance. The comparison of "members" was a little off-putting.

Congrats to Scar though. Haha! I normally read romance genre. This was something I kept anticipating from Syrus and Crixus, but I also understand Syrus's hesitancy with everything that was taking place in this book. I hope their relationship grows in the next book.
I am looking forward to the next book in this dark fantasy trilogy.

Bloodlust…. Just save yourself the debate and buy it. Trust me! This story is epic, its heroic, its got a nice long slow burn to it and it pulls on the heartstrings. The world building is awesome, the way that Devin creates the world that the characters live in is unique and done in a way that feels natural. I’m not going to spoil it by telling you… sorry, not sorry! The characters are rich and wonderful in who they are and where they come from. It’s written in a way that captures you and holds you until you have to physically set it down to go to sleep…. Trust me, I did it the hard way on more than one occasion! The quick wit and humor of the characters is enjoyable, the story does nothing but build and become more robust the further along you go… and the ending? It’s a small victory but of many to come, I cannot wait for Devin’s second book in this trilogy. I am very excited, I see this being a NYT Bestseller! Go on now, get your copy and sink into the world of Bloodlust, I promise you will still be hungry for more :D

From the very beginning Bloodlust commands your investment into the main character with a back and forth between a nightmarish reality and a terrorizing past. As the reader you immediately become so curious about how and why he is in this position and what he is going to do about it. Regardless of this being in the realm of supernatural fantasy, Bloodlust speaks to some of the most human parts of us...family, love and loss, betrayal, power, inner strength, control, destiny, parenthood! The takes us on a crazy ride and leaves us with a wicked cliff hanger! Great read!

An amazing read filled with action

I believe I have truly found a new trilogy to obsess over. I could not stop reading this story. It's unlike any I have read so far. And if I'm honest it would make an amazing movie or even a tv show.

I found this by scrolling through TikTok. I must say I'm so grateful to have seen it by chance, because I think this is my new favorite read of the year.

If you like you like vampires and werewolves and you’re ok with the fact that the vampires don’t sparkle 😂 and underworld vibes. Then this book is for you! I would definitely recommend this fantasy to everyone. The story is great you literally jump right in at the beginning and it grips you from the beginning to the end. I love a book that instantly brings you in and as someone who is new to the vampire/werewolf(lycan) literature this was a good read! I don’t want to spoil it, but that end was well….omg just read this!!

This book takes the beautiful prose of classic fantasy and mixes it with the exciting pace of modern fantasy to create a hauntingly dark masterpiece. Twists, turns, war, suffering, family, death, destruction, and a budding romance. I can hardly believe this is a debut novel. I eagerly look forward to the rest of the series and watching the author grow.

Let’s talk about Sylvian—the MMC who stole the show and my heart. Devin Thorpe crafted a character who’s equal parts dangerous, brooding, and surprisingly vulnerable. Sylvian’s internal battle between his dark past and his undeniable connection to the FMC made every scene he graced electric.

There’s something about his presence—commanding yet soft—that pulls you deeper into the story. His moments of quiet strength, his unspoken sacrifices, and his fierce protectiveness added so much emotional weight. I couldn’t help but root for him, flaws and all.

The chemistry between Sylvian and the FMC is perfection. Their relationship simmers just below the surface, full of tension and longing, never distracting from the high-stakes action and rich plot.

🩸 Favorite Moment: Sylvian’s moment of vulnerability when he opens up about his past—it completely shattered me.

🌟 Why you’ll love this: If morally grey, tortured heroes with hearts of gold are your thing, Sylvian will absolutely ruin you in the best way possible. Pair that with intense world-building, action, and a sprinkle of spice, and you’ve got a five-star fantasy.

Holy hell! What a ride! So intense! I love the flashback and forward concept. It works quite well for this story. I did NOT see that ending coming. 😳 It makes me want to re-read it with new eyes, now that I know. It's been a long time since I couldn't see an ending coming. It was refreshing.

I really enjoyed the darkness of the characters and environment that were so poetically unfolded with beautifully written pros and metaphors. Seriously, such a good book! Can't wait for the next in the series.

I wanted to branch out from romance and I thought this was the perfect book, and boy was I RIGHT. The details, the characters, the plot. Everything about it draws you in. You really feel what the MC feels, the twists and turns are actually crazy. I highly suggest this book!

While this book did take me a while to finished I did enjoy it. The world building was good and I appreciated getting the flashbacks to connect all the pieces of his life. At times some of the writing got a little repetitive. There were a couple moments while reading where I questioned the writing and storyline. Overall an interesting read! Found off of tiktok and read on my kindle.

Bloodlust is an epic fantasy story that will take you to the ends of the earth to save the one thing that matters most, your daughter.

Syrus Sylvian is the last remaining Sylvian (Lycan-Undead Hybrid) and he will do whatever it takes to ensure that the one person he loves more than life itself is safe and back in his arms. Syrus has been held prisoner for twenty-four moons to fight and kill the other Lycans in the prison with him. Either kill or be killed. He is then gifted his freedom in exchange for a suicide mission. Anyone would be stupid enough to continue the mission once freed, but his daughter’s life is on the line. Can he survive and complete the mission to save his daughter? Is the pack he’s left to lead trustworthy enough to keep alive? Can he forgive himself for all the death that follows him? Can he allow himself to truly be happy? Read Bloodlust to find out!

This was intense! The storyline was interesting enough, and our main guy passed out so many dang times that we get many glimpses into the past until it all comes together. But it was VERY graphic and gory and violent. Different from what I normally read, but interesting take on vampires and werewolves!

But side note, did we really need to hear about his piss puddle that many times in the beginning?😭

This is not a full review. I read through the beginning of all 300 SPFBOX contest entries. This was a book I wanted to read more of.

An inhuman hunter’s lessons to his daughter end terribly in this 1st-person present tense fantasy.

The prose here is terse but effective. It is descriptive, sets its scene well, and establishes a sense of voice as it introduces us to our protagonist.

The setting is forested and rainy. We get a sense that there is something inhuman about our narrator protagonist, but we’re not told what it is. I’m not even sure it IS something inhuman. He may just have a good feel for hunting.

Because of how this chapter ends, I’m sure there’s something more about our MC. I think if the narrative had spent a little more time exploring that instead of what rain does, it would have made this more enticing and less vague.

((Glancing at the book blurb, I see it somewhat succinctly lays out details about our MC. I wish these things were included engagingly in the narrative.))

Nonetheless, this ends with an abrupt but exciting transition that makes me want to keep reading. I had to stop myself from continuing into ch2. That’s a mark of a job well done if anything is.

I feel from here on, everything about our MC’s life will be different, and, while I wish I already knew more about him, I want to find out what he’ll do now. That makes this an enticing opening! I’m in!

I wanted to read something that wasn’t sunshine & rainbows and this definitely delivered. There are ALOT of trigger warnings… this is not for the soft of heart! I will say that I started reading this on audio but it was terrible, I couldn’t get past the terrible voice acting, it actually distracted me from enjoying the story so I went back to reading the book and I’m so glad that I did! There is a lot of violence and gore in this story. This is definitely a unique world & the character building especially of our MMC is fantastic! I appreciated the fact that the book wasn’t filled with unnecessary sexual content. I will say that I really wasn’t expecting the twists at the end and really enjoyed the final battle. There was a lot of back and forth between past & present but I felt it was necessary for the story, for us to understand the weight and magnitude of what the MC went through & how things ended up. I cant wait to read more in this series!

Favorite quotes:

“It seems all things in life that are truly beautiful are the cause of pain and suffering. Every positive emotion we experience can be turned to pain. Loss accompanies love. Betrayal follows loyalty. Envy counters every generosity. There is no escaping the horrors this life presents. We are all malleable clay in the hands of a spiteful sculptor.”

“I am the hellhound the devil has sent to collect your soul,”

I will preface the following with this, I am not a “reader”. However, when I do read, prefer fantasy fiction, something that takes you into a different world. I took a chance on this book and wow….. I was not disappointed.

The world building on the front end was lengthy but necessary to develop such an intricate setting.

I loved the map in the front of the book to help set the scene and make sense of the locations. I was constantly referencing it throughout the book.

Obviously the plot was unpredictable, in a good way! No one reading could have guessed the plot at any point, but it made sense. It didn’t leave you confused, which I imagine is not easy to do with such a detailed world and character cast.

I liked that there was some romance and I think it gave the reader just enough relief and joy to lighten a very heavy and depressing plot.

The secondary characters were not overly involved and they had purpose. Which in my opinion is important to not distract from the story.

The vernacular was great. It made it very easy for the reader to picture every detail, from pain to bliss.

Overall, I am very impressed with your writing ability and imagination. If you like fantasy fiction, and you enjoy being enthralled by a whole new reality, you will love this book. Can’t wait to read the next one!

"Bloodlust" by Devin Thorpe, book 1 of a trilogy series, is narrated from Syrus's perspective, with the narrative alternating between "A DREAM" - representing his dreams, which usually flash back to the past, and "A NIGHTMARE" - his actual reality when he is awake. In the initial chapters, you begin to grasp the situation Syrus is in, and it is not good. As the story progresses, the world-building unfolds, allowing you to understand the various players involved. We then figure out Syrus is indeed a half-vampire/werewolf hybrid in the middle of a war between both species, and his fate may have been prewritten. The switch between dream and nightmare hypes you up and winds you down as you take on a journey with Syrus as he navigates this war on the outside and within himself. The book is not a slow-burn; the author builds imagery and sensory-detailed descriptions that immerse you with the MMC and his surroundings. As someone who doesn't switch between genres often, I really enjoyed this book, and we all know I love a book that has a well-executed twist. Book 2 could not come quick enough; I would 100% recommend it.

I am so glad this book came across my FYP on TikTok!
I absolutely love fantasy that centers around the life long adversaries vampires and werewolves.
Devin Thorpe is an absolute genius at world building and character development.
I felt like I was right beside Syrus throughout his journey, from the creatures he came across to the terrain he had to navigate.
I could feel the deep range of emotions that he felt with each trial that was put in front of him. The inner battle to overcome his guilt and inadequacy.
An excellent book from beginning to end.
I did make a mistake by reading Huntress before Bloodlust but I don’t feel like it mattered, they are in the same world just at different times. And there was actually a WTF moment when I realized who Syria’s dad and mentors were from doing so.
I can tell this is a series that will only get better as it goes on.
If you are a lover of fantasy that contains carnage, warfare, political angst and yes.. some romance, you will really enjoy Bloodlust.

The concept in a storyline for this book is very unique. It is definitely thrilling and exciting and descriptive.

The intimate scenes involving love interests are totally terrible. I wish I could have rewritten them in a way where women would like them. Our main character seems like a real sexy dude, but the love scenes leave a lot to be desired.

There was an abundance of over-explaining, for instance, someone noticed that the bottom of a boat was turning into cement and everybody freaked out, followed by a strange moment, where the author described to us that the boat itself was going to sink. I am pretty sure most adults who can read can draw a lot of these conclusions. Felt felt like mansplaining.

I had a DNF this book 70% of the way through. It has amazing potential but it needs an author that can polish UP the material and not underestimate their reader. Would love to see it go through a fat edit to remove 20% of the fat. Otherwise it’s an amazing concept and the story line and visuals are great!

Bloodlust is Devin Thorpe's debut novel and the start of an amazing trilogy. I would have never guess that this was an author who had no other books out. It is simply AMAZING.

I found this author on Social Media and instantly knew it was a must read. I dropped everything else I was reading and dove head first into the world of Syrus Sylvian. AND IT DID NOT DISAPOINT!!

This book follows Syrus, who is a warrior of the Lycan-Undead hybrids. He has had the worst luck at life and has been on the run from his hometown since he was a child for treason, and now the enemy has his daughter and killed his wife. He will get revenge for all the wrongs in his life. For her he will fight until his dying breath. He gets put with a group of people to help him a long his journey and I cannot wait to learn more about them and there stories!!

A gripping book about werewolves, vampires, and hybrids. It will keep you interested. I think back to this world and this book DAILY!!!

This book is one that has you drawn in from the beginning. Starting out in the middle of a dream and throwing you right into the story. It has you asking questions of “How, When, Why, and Who” within the first couple chapters. With every page those questions are answered and even more are asked! Betrayals and unlikely friends will keep you wanting more from the edge of your seat. History of the realm is poetically intertwined with each destination. The descriptions are in abundance and all vastly different. Not only giving you a vivid mental picture, but they share with you a feeling of how the main character sees his surroundings and those in his past. From the grotesque “Blackbloods” to the tasteful and sensual spice. The author has a way of building deep meaningful relationships between the characters, such raw emotions that will make you feel like you are part of the pack!
