A very nice story which reminds me Rosamund Pilcher's or Maeve Binchy's novels. I enjoyed a rich romance, full of mysteries and cute describes of Corfu (and as a Greek who travelled there I found them very real, not just the greek bulletin "sun-sea-souvlaki"), and a nice end without the usual panic who writers have after a 500 pages novel to end it in a page and who cares about the reader who finds suddenly nothing in the end. I would like more books from this lady!

Why was this 536 pages? It should have been a pamphlet.
Such a disappointment of a story.

I loved this book, both when I first read it, and on re-reading twelve years later. It's a novel based in both the UK and Corfu. Wonderful writing, and excellent characterisation from an elderly grandmother down to six-year-old Jake.

The book is thought-provoking, and ends in an encouraging way without tying up the ends too neatly.
It's moving in places and I found it almost impossible to put down.

Highly recommended to anyone who likes gentle women's fiction with some depth.

I’m sure this book could have been 200 pages shorter and have lost nothing in the telling. That said it was easy to read and generally engaging. I have to admit to finding the dialogue somewhat tedious however, nobody talks like this; the characters when conversing would need to sit down in turns due to how long the other person takes to say their bit, and everybody is so earnest in everything they say. I enjoyed it however and thought the characters interesting (minus the page long soliloquies they somehow use to converse).

This is one of those books which will stay with me for a long time.

I crave family stories and the more generations the better. No family is perfect but I find it soothing to read about how families still bring themselves together in times of desperation.
Family stories that evolve around a place also does it for me everytime. How a house or a certain place is very much part of a family is beautiful and I understand how important this is. A family gives a house its character and the house, in turn, can become the very personification of the family.

Vrahos and the Venetian house truly is the center piece of this story. We read through Victoria's happy childhood in this house and how she returns to it after a great tragedy in her family.

I don't want to give much away because the story is worth reading, but I liked how we expect the story to be just this character trying to get back on her feet and, as soon as she starts to fall in love again, this other person is very important to the family in ways we are not expecting.

If you like long-lost-love and found again stories this is the story for you. It reminded me of The Lost Wife by Alison Richman, which I also recommend.

Give yourself the pleasure of slowing down after your troubled day reading this fascinating story. I can understand that some parts could be just quicker and you just wish to move on to the next chapter but, as always, it all comes down together in the end.

I LOVED this book. At first I was quite intimidated given the length and the tiny text, however I found myself quickly absorbed into the romance, the drama and the story behind the old venetian house and it's history. I finished it much quicker than anticipated and never once felt that the story was either rushed or dragging on. I do wish that some things had gone differently between Rachel and her husband at the end of the story but each book is bound to have somebody in the ending that doesn't get what they deserve in somebodies opinion! All around an awesome book and I look forward to reading some other books by Nickson!

The only reason this gets 2* and not 1 is because I liked it at the end. Even as far as chapter 13 I was very close to giving up on it. The only reason I didn't was because I couldn't be bothered finding a new book to read instead.

Halfway through I'd say it became readable and it wasn't until about 3/4 through that I started to like the story. Very predictable ending but I would have been annoyed I'd stuck with it if that hadn't been the case.

I won't be looking for any more of her books to read.

Blimey it was long! And so many bad/sad things happen to the people in this book. Thank God they had a Greek idyll to rest in. I can't believe how badly behaved some of the characters were. I sound like a headmistress when I say that. But honestly a bit beyound the suspension of disbelief.

Both lame and awesome at the same time, I'm sure some of you would agree. It was longer than it needed to be. I was so mad that no wasps were mentioned being Corfu and all....when they were finally mentioned it kind of made sense, as felt like some sort of ominous symbolism. This book has a midday movie vibe.

Algo predecible

The book was really long. It was interesting at the beginning, but as it went on, it began to drag and be somewhat repetitious. I had trouble staying interested. The descriptions of Corfu make me want to go there.

Simplemente perfecto.
