All Spencer wants in life is an NCAA scholarship to play DI college basketball. He visits universities when he can and works hard at his goal of taking his team to the state basketball championship. When disaster strikes, Spencer's desperation sends him to the one person he was determined to ignore: his father.

REREAD: it's true storytelling when the main character can make so many dumb decisions in one short book, yet I still like him so much. xD
FIRST READ: 4.5 stars. These books simply keep getting better. This was yet another epic read.
Spencer had a whole lot of character development in this story and it was amazing to see. Jill Williamson did it in such a skillful way that it wasn't forced and just flowed in so nicely.
The mysterious past is getting closer but more and more questions keep coming up, and I'm starting to suspect every new character who appears on the page.
This book didn't have as much of the Mission League to it, but it was a very interesting story and I was hooked in from the beginning. The style and voice is catchy and very easy to read - a combination which proves to keep me up past midnight every time. (And past 1 am...and maybe 2 am as well... *ahem*)
Totally recommend this to all Mission League lovers. An amazing read!
yaaayyy! finished it! I love this series guys, It's amazing!! I liked this book, but It did unexpectedly and a few things in it, I mean for a Christian book I was surprised. It wasn't terrible, the worst i found, or at least remember was maybe two girls making out at a party, but it's only mentioned, not explained, and there were teens drinking at a party also, and one snuck in drugs in a dessert, but that's about it. Also a few kisses too, but overall it was fine.
Even though this series is for juveniles, I have been enjoying it, and it is very entertaining....however, I have been bothered by some things in the book, and this one really brought those things to the forefront. This is supposed to be Christian fiction for juveniles. The main characters go to a Christian school...... yet several of the kids go to a party where there is alcoholic beverages and pot brownies. The main character, a minor, has an adult female chasing him and trying to seduce him. Boys talk about wanting to have sex with certain girls..... what bothers me most, is the author doesn't do anything to portray these behaviors as wrong for the most part. I don't think I'd want my just turned teenage nephew to read this book...... the book just presents too much bad behavior for any teenagers to be, but especially kids from a Christian school. I am bothered enough by this that I may quit reading the series. The idea is a neat idea, and not every person must be a Bible quoting Christian, but most are not.... and most engage in behaviors that are not fully condemned in the book. It could give some kids the wrong ideas and almost encourage them to try some things they should never try.
A really excellent taste that makes me want to read the next book. To be honest, the only "downside" (and I'm using that term very loosely) is that there's so much character and plot development in this story, I'm hoping that everyone will know to read it so they don't miss out. Another great story by Jill Williamson!
Someone give this boy a scholarship. I can't see how people read these books and think they're too "graphic" or whatever. Always makes me wonder just how much of the Bible they've read. Anyway, I feel bad for Spencer, poor kid just wants to play ball. I'm glad Williamson writes him as a normal, regular human being, not some evil, misguided atheist who's out to get every Christian he comes across. Hats off to her.
1. Jill Williamson. I want to give this book five stars simply because I like her writing style so much.
2. Grace. I have a feeling she'll be in the future books a lot more, and I'm glad. I wanted to see more of her in this one too though. I find her story a lot more interesting than how Spencer accidentally got intoxicated.
3. The ending. Finally, Spencer is learning.
Things I disliked:
1. Gabe's man initiation. It did turn out to have a reason later in the book, but I felt like Jill Williamson was trying too hard to make a message about how men should be. Too preachy for my tastes.
2. Spencer is so dumb. He means well, but really? REALLY?! Going to your dad's house when you have reason to believe that he murdered your mom? Then not telling anyone? For being Spencer's bodyguard, Kimbal isn't very good at guarding.
3. I think the problem I had with this book is that it didn't live up to my high expectations, set by The New Recruit.
Will I buy Broken Trust when it comes out for pre-order? Of course! Ambushed probably deserves a three or three and a half stars, although I'm giving it four because I love Jill Williamson's writing so much.
The girl stuff in these books is still making me blush, but Jill does an awesome job of writing Spencer (as always). His personality and mannerisms make me laugh. And the kids finally learning. Something pretty big seemed to happen in the last sentence of this book. I'm curious to see how it pans out in the next installment. And Grace. What's up with Grace? If only books got published faster.
I love Spencer and the Mission League series. This was a fun supplement. Lots of questions still unanswered. I'm looking forward to the next installment. I'm a big high school and basketball fan, so that was a fun feature of this story.
