You, Me, and Bad Movies

Rate this book
You, Me, and Bad Movies is a YA novel about Avery Cormier, an agender and pansexual teen, and their mysterious pen pal carrying secrets that may lead to disappointment.

Fresh out of a horrendous summer break up, Avery is absolutely done with romance, or so they thought. After discovering a scribbled list of bad movies in the school library, they end up exchanging notes with a witty, charming, and bad movie loving pen pal going by the name K.

Two months later, K has stolen their once shattered heart. Avery wants to take a chance and meet in person, even if that means they may be turned away for being agender. However, K shuts the idea down immediately, leaving Avery pondering why and more desperate to discover their pen pal’s true identity.

But with Avery’s ex lingering on their mind and in their life, moving on is harder than they thought, especially when K suddenly wants to cut off all contact. The question of why is only explained when K's identity is accidentally revealed and it's the last person Avery could have imagined.

One of the first books to hook me from the opening few pages and keep me until the end in a long time, I read this book start to finish in the span of a handful of hours. The characters were relatable and diverse, and I liked how even the 'bad guys' of the story had relatable and recognisable qualities. We're all just people with different viewpoints and ideas, and I think this story goes a long way in showcasing that.

I really enjoyed Avery's voice throughout narration, and found their struggles with their gender identity and finding acceptance and love-both external and in themself-in a world that wasn't made for them to speak to my own experiences in uncommon ways. The world doesn't know it, but it definitely needs this book, and I rejoice for a generation of queer youth that can grow up with something like this giving them words to describe their experience.

It's a very every-day high-school experience, a ride through self-acceptance, grappling with the challenges of love and betrayal, and learning to see the best in ourselves and others when it feels like there isn't any good to find. The character development and growth are both sincere and slow, and though that growth might feel minor, it's a huge thing to be able to forgive yourself for your own mistakes, especially when those mistakes have caused others a lot of unnecessary pain.

The main romance is occasionally frustrating, but really human and extremely sweet by the end. I would not complain about a sequel. Not at all. All in all, a wonderful book with a lovely message and a fantastic narrator to deliver it from.

STOOOOOOOP this was so stinking cute.

I love little YA rom coms where teenagers are falling in love and all the emotions and feelings are so big. These kids 🥲.

I loved that this story was concentrated on a short period of time, in a small space and was so focused.

The writing was well done, characters were adorable. I said “aw” like 100 times. All the parents were accepting and funny.

This was a quick read, the story like a warm hug. All holding hands and intense stares for most of the novel, for the slow burn lovers 🔥.

Totally pick this up it’s the cutest I want to squish its cheeks if books had cheeks. 🥰❤️

Thank you @booksprout for sharing this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Looked forward to reading this book the moment I heard it was coming out, and I loved it from the moment I opened it.

The way the characters are written makes it very easy to relate to them and understand their feelings, and makes them feel very real and genuine. I loved the way Avery’s gender identity was treated in the story, and it was wonderful that all the characters, even some background ones who were only mentioned in passing, still felt like genuine characters rather than just, people in the background.

Overall, the story was positively wonderful and I plan to reread it many times!.

Got a copy via Booksprout, but am voluntarily leaving an honest review

Unexpected favorite. A bit of a slower pace, but in a way where you know it’s needed to create a beautiful ending. Two very sweet, but realistic romances. I also was able to take some good lessons with me.

Review is a little all over the place but I really had no idea how to write my thoughts down in a way where I could describe how much I enjoyed this book lol

This quickly became a very unexpected favorite, surprising because it included a few things I tend to avoid in a book. But this was written in a way where I felt like I was learning the more I read.

I was honestly hooked right from the start up until the end, and I didn’t think I would finish this so fast since I’ve been reading a fantasy series- but I was able to finish in this in one go. I was supposed to be a few pages read before bed but I ended up reading it past midnight and there’s absolutely no regrets !!

The characters were all so diverse and they all fit so perfectly together, whether as friendship or a romantic relationship or even the bond between family. It was all so beautiful woven together to create this wonderful story. The romantic relationships were both very sweet, at times frustrating but in a way where it’s realistic. It’s easy to admit you like someone, but it’s hard to bring those feelings up when you think everything might get ruined because of those feelings.

There was just so much to a character, they all just felt human. Most of the time we read about perfect characters- but these characters had flaws that actually make them relatable. I was also pleasantly surprised on how situations were handled, and even how there was always more to a person that we really know- especially when listening to rumors, we should always realize that there’s more to the story that we will ever know as outsiders. And that people grow, we aren’t the same people we were five years ago or even two years back. We change, whether it’s for the best or worse.

I was able to relate to a lot of things Avery brought up, a lot of things they said made me feel seen and heard. Made me feel that a character can really be this relatable. They struggle with going forward with new information, but they always work things out in a way that they feel fits them best. And I thought that was beautiful.

Things might feel a bit slow, but it’s also something that needs to be said or heard to create a perfect ending.

AAAAAA I loved this book so much! It was funny and deep with a spark of mistery and a lovely romance.
I really liked K back story because it made them feel real and gave a dept to the story.
The story was perfectly carved for its 200ish pages but honestly I would have loved to read more because I got attached to Avery, K, Sophie and Max. Please Twoony consider a double date extra story!!! or a Sophie and Max book!!!

Also I decided to read this book for the pan rep and I was so happy to find ace rep too, thank you!

And shout out to @c_leadraw for this cover because she captured perfectly the sweetness of Avery and the comfort of this book.

This book really hooked me from the start. I just love the characters and found them to be very human. It’s rare to find a book where the characters are human and make mistakes, but Twoony has that down. The main characters are flawed, and can sometimes be cruel to each other, but everyone does that and it is so refreshing to see.
You, Me, and Bad Movies is an adorable romance that is refreshingly fluffy, full of relatable characters, and overall something I would reread again and again when I need a pick-me-up. This book is 5 stars in a way different than how I would rate a complex fantasy five stars, but not any less deserving.

Reading this was like a warm hug with the best amount of angst and thrill. The starting had me in chokehold and it is written so amazingly well, the wait was so worth it. Their meet-cute was the best. And I love the way their interactions progressed and all the details.

Avery and their relationship with their friends was the highlight for me. It was authentic and amazing and aligned very well with how they are a person. And I loved the way the issue with his ex was addressed and put to rest.

The book also didn't shy away from exploring sensitive topics. We see a reflection of how mechanisms like rumours and bullying are prominent in high school and how they're not always black and white. And confrontations and apologies are important in environments like these.

I love the cleverness and thoughtfulness that went into this. Also that last scene has my entire heart.

"It is sad how the world tries to use two colors to define humanity when what makes humanity beautiful is how many colors we can be."

"You, Me, and Bad Movies" is a book that hooked me from the very first pages and kept that magic going until the very last page. I read the book within only a couple of hours, but I can definitely say that for me it was one of the best reads of the year. The characters were realistic and diverse, and the story was full of thoughts that I could identify with very easily.

I was particularly impressed by how easily I could identify with the main character, Avery. Like them, I am a pansexual and I was especially impressed with the way they made the reader understand what that term means. I could also identify with their struggles with their gender identity, as I also often feel that society wants to push us into certain categories. Avery's thoughts point out that no one should have to follow the expectations of others. They encourage us to stop letting others decide what we should look like or what clothes we should wear simply based on our gender.

We need more books like this, as Avery's reflections can help queer young people to understand themselves better and find their own way. The book not only touches on this important and relevant topic, but also deals with it in a thorough and sensitive way.

I quite enjoyed that even the "bad guys" of the story had nuanced and relatable traits. This approach made me realize that we are all just people with different perspectives and ideas. The book presents this diversity and complexity of people in a truly fascinating way.

The diversity and complexity of the characters made the story very real. Whether it was friendships, romantic relationships or family ties, everything just fit together perfectly. The romantic threads were sweet, but not too cheesy, maybe a little frustrating at times, but there was a realness to that too. The book is also a reminder that confessing love is hard and exploring feelings can be dangerous, but those feelings are what make life exciting and worthwhile. The author masterfully transports us back to everyday life in high school and the problems of ordinary teenagers, showing how life's small pleasures and challenges shaped the characters and their lives.

You, Me, and Bad Movies was a read that left a deep impression on me. I empathised with the characters' joys and pains, and it made me think about the message the book carries. This experience reinforced that everyone is unique and valuable in their own way, and that acceptance and self-identity are key to human relationships and self-expression. I hope that this book has not only been an inspiration for me, but also helps others to find their own way in this world.

Avery is an agender, pansexual teen who loves comic books and watching bad movies suggested by their secret pen pal, K. But when the heartfelt notes turn to mild flirting, Avery is intrigued about the identity of K. They have a little crush on the funny and blunt K with a plethora of suggestions of bad movies as he makes them forget about their horrible breakup with their ex. But will Avery feel good upon learning who really K is? Or will they be disappointed?

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is such a cute story with lovable characters. Avery is a funny, compassionate, and clumsy teenager with their very supportive family and best friends. I loved the constant banter and tension between Max and Sophie.

The story also addressed the issue of homophobia and how difficult it is for people who identify themselves differently from what society expects. It also speaks about the backlash queer people receive for embracing themselves and being open about their identity.

I totally understood the dilemma explained in the book because I have questioned my identity and orientation several times, but not finding a definite answer for it. That made me appreciate this novel even more, seeing how it showed both sides of queerness - the support we can receive when we decide to let people in, and the negativity we invite when we expose ourselves.

Not only queerness, it displayed the senseless cruelty in which high school and its gossip work, like a mirror of the society it is in.

The story was well-written, keeping me guessing who K was and blindsiding me with the reveal.

I highly recommend this book if you love cheesy Young Adult novels similar to the Heartstopper: Volume One series.

It's a short, wholesome, easy read.
I must admit that I had mixed feelings at first, mostly due to the fact that some sentences were confusing for me and I had to read them over twice (but please keep in mind that English is not my first language).
By the second half, I was hooked on the story and by the end of it, I was actually sad that it was so short.

Avery is a witty, sarcastic narrator and such a relatable person.
"I do this with my parents and Jules and everything. Over analyze the details until the details turn into more than what they are and I fret over nothing or blow things out of proportion".
This is exactly what I do all my life so I understand their struggles.

"I'm not the one failing miserably at courting their evasive pen pal".
I had many different guesses about who K might be. One of them turned out to be true. It wasn't as big a surprise to me as I expected it to be, but I'm glad that K turned out to be who they are - it made for a very interesting story :)
They are not perfect by any means but they learn to own up to their mistakes and I love them for that.
K and Avery's relationship is so wholesome and I would have loved to read more about them. Their interactions were so sweet and funny. Wouldn't mind a sequel at all *please I need it*!

As for the side characters, Dad and Jules take the crowns! I have saved two quotes that I would love to share here but can't (spoilers). So you'll have to take my word for it.

And the ending. The ending was just perfect!.

💞you me, and bad movies💞

ARC Review by Jessie melka

Okay, so I have had this book on my TBR for quite awhile actually, and I was a little nervous for reading it because it was my first book from Twoony that I had on Kindle. I have all her books in paperback otherwise and I didn’t know if the experience would be the same, I don’t know if any of you feel the same but that’s just my preference

anyways when I started reading this book I immediately felt happy, it just kept my smile on my face for almost entire book. I don’t know what it was about it. It made that made me so happy but I just found peace in reading this.

I really like the way Avery supported sid after he found out what really happened and how he misunderstood and judge the situation too fast. It was also so sweet that he immediately tried to make Sid understand that he was worth something and he deserves more than what he went Thought

I have read a book about pen-pals before but this was definitely my favourite, but I was so fucking confused because I was convinced that it was that bully at first and I was shocked immediately when I found out who it was to say that I was disappointed, not at all I really liked how it turned out. I think they are really good for each other.

I gave this book a 4 out of 5 it was a short but efficient read. It is definitely something I would revisit someday. Maybe I would have liked a better ending to the story, I would’ve liked to see how the double date went, and maybe how the relationship turned out in the long run

This is just my opinion, remember to always form your own opinions, even though I know it’s hard not to read the reviews before the books, but sometimes it’s not really worth getting to spoilers and so on

If low angst, rom-com, Bad movies and secret pen-pals is something for you. I think you should check this book out because this is definitely some of the good qualities that this book has also Twoony writes amazing books and I seriously cannot pick a favourite go check out her work and read this book if you like

Avery is an agender, pansexual teen who stumbles their way into a pen pal when they find an assignment left in the library. On the back was a watchlist of some truly awful movies, and Avery loved every minute of each one. When they ask for more recommendations, a friendship blooms that's full of bad movies and flirty banter. When Avery asks to meet, the mysterious "K" shuts them down, leaving Avery upset and confused. Determined to figure out who their new friend is, despite a warning that they'd be disappointed with the answer, Avery does their best to suss out K's identity. When the truth is revealed, it's the last person Avery would have suspected, and it sends them into a tailspin.
I really loved the rep in this book: agender, pansexual, and asexual, to name a few. It can be difficult to find books that showcase one of those identities, let alone two or three. There was the usual teenage angst, but it also included heavier themes, which I felt were handled very well. The main characters were so fun, and I enjoyed reading about them. The final reveal came as a surprise, and the ending was so sweet. I liked that K and Avery were able to communicate their wants and needs so clearly, once they were able to sit down and really talk. They're so sweet, and they help each other better understand some of their insecurities and past experiences.
The book was well-written and I enjoyed it. I'll definitely check into the author's other works in the future.

I thought this story did a wonderful job at addressing what being Agender means to people. For me personally it was really refreshing to see a character who worries about being too feminine/ too masculine like me. I also truthfully thought Avery was written incredibly well. The way that each thought that ran through their head was careful constructed, really allows you to feel their emotions on a deeper level.
(Also enjoyed the the addition of an asexual side character 🫶🏼)

I was quite happy that the person behind the whole notes and email chain between Avery and their pen pal wasn't kace. He was such a bully with not remorse. The pen pal ended up being Sid and I could be more happier. He's such a sweet kid who had such a bad rep for a long time for something that happened two years ago. He was always respectful about Avery and their pronouns which is brownie points in my book.

I loved the scenes that we got with Avery and Sid after the discussed everything that happened between. Also the fact that Avery help sid come to conclusions that he should meet up with a therapist, is quite frankly adorable 🫶🏼

You, Me, and Bad Movies was really a joy to read. I didn't expect to find so much representation in a book which is not so long, but I am grateful and relieved that i did.
First things first, I really liked the main idea of the story (big fan of secret messages and libraries) and how it was developed. Pus, the slowburn was very well handled and really kept me on my toes!! I must admit that it took me some time to get properly into the story, but after the first third of the book i was already captured by the plot.
As far as the characters are considered, I reckon that each of them is unique in their own way and manages to stand out. In addition, i really liked to see so many different queer voices in one book.
The only remark I might want to make is that I wished it had been slightly longer, to give more space to the characters as I felt that sometimes some actions were a bit rushed.

Anyway, all things considered, it was a very enjoyable read!!

The perfect young adult romance. Twoony creates the cutest young adult romance. You, Me, and Bad movies is an expert blend of angst, friendship, and the sweetest relationships. This is the book I needed at twelve.

Avery is a loveable and chaotic high school student falling in love with their pen-pal, K, and bonding over horrible movies. Although they attend the same school, Avery has no idea who K is or how K will react when they discover Avery is agender.

Every word in this book felt like a love letter, an all-encompassing hug of gentle characters and warm romance. Even with the mentions of cheating and the harsh twists, this book had the comfort of a warm blanket.

Twoony creates the most gentle trans love story, where a character's gender is far less important than the personality they contain. Me, You, and Bad Movies was easily a 5-star read and something I would recommend.

I absolutely love stories where the characters get to know each other through the written word. Avery finds a list that appeals to them and makes them curious about the writer and there starts their foray into a pen pal relationship that is intriguing enough for them to want to meet. When the mysterious pen pal is reluctant and warns them that they really won't want to know their pen pal is but they still digs and it turns out that they are a bit thrown by who they find out it is. There are so many cool life lessons in this one - I will not enumerate them here - but I will say that this such a good story to explore them in.

I really loved this story and the characters!

Highlights:

• Avery is a funny, sarcastic narrator
• I did not expect the twist on who K was (no spoilers)
• I love the idea of suggesting bad movies because people – in real life and in books – usually recommend movies they perceive to be good
• Some romantic tropes are present and others are broken. I won’t reveal details; you’ll have to read the book to find out what these tropes are
• This is great for anyone who is a fan of pen pals
• Themes include moving forward, not judging people before you know them, and practicing self-compassion

If you liked simon vs the homosapien agenda, you'll like this!

This was super cute! From the note exchanges to the reveal of the mysterious pen Pal, I loved it all. A pleasant read with lots of representation!

My only gripe was it ended too soon! I felt like there needed to be more, I wanted to see the double date! The last chapter didn't feel like a fulfilling enough ending to me.

If there's more to come I'd definitely read it. I liked Avery's friends and their support system and the mysterious Pen Pal was a great surprise too!

Overall it was a fun, sweet read.

Man what I would’ve given to have queer books such as these as a teen or early adult. I have hope that with books like these for the next generation, they won’t have to feel so alone with their big feelings and identities.

I think books like these are so important especially for the youth. This book was a warm hug and a reminder of love, what it is to grow up, and make changes. I thoroughly enjoyed my reading of this even as an adult.

I was provided with an ARC from booksprout, but the feelings and review is sincere. I really recommend this to anyone who may have a teenager so we can relate further to the next generation to make sure they feel loved and accepted.

I read this book back when it was still known as "—K" on Tapas, so I was extremely excited to see it revised and republished. If you read it on Tapas, I highly recommend reading it again now to find all the differences — trust me, there's a lot! The main character is relatable and charming, and the romance unfolds beautifully. And who could forget our favorite little kitty Floof? I enjoyed every minute of reading it, and found it hard to put down. Twoony has a captivating way with words, and every book blows me away. I'd definitely recommend this one, and any of Twoony's other novels as they'll all leave you feeling awestruck when they're over.

I sat down and read this in a day. Once I started going there was no stopping. I fell in love with every character. As a matter of fact I'd start a war if Sid asked me to. I love him so, so much. The soft bad boy trope isn't used this effectively often. My only complaint is I wish it were longer. I'd love to see how the future plays out for everyone. It was an eye opening book and brought me right back to highschool and the rumors I still remember going around. The book made me stop and think and reconsider which is so, so important in this day and age.

This was such a heartwarming and fun story! Growing up queer can be such an isolating and emotional experience. This story showcased the positive and fun sides of growing up queer. Avery has supportive parents, friends and teachers which is what any young queer kids hope for. I found myself delighting in the cute sappy moments, laughing along at the friend interactions and overall overjoyed at the positive representation in this.
I love queer joy!!.

This was a wonderfully written story that kept me turning the pages waiting to see how it ended. I love Avery and Sid. Two shy teenagers growing up dealing with uncertainty, bullies and fears. They meet in an unexpected way - a note left in the library only later to find out how their paths were actually intertwined.

I was so happy that Avery and Sid had amazing parents, and good friends to help navigate their paths.

This is a delightful and easy read and perfect for the month of romance. Avery and K are very cute and seeing their happy ending was amazing. I was shocked at the reveal of K as I thought it would be someone else! It was also nice reading how supportive, and at times, funny, the MCs friends and family were. A very wholesome group and adorable couple. - I received a free copy from Booksprout. My opinions of the book are my own.

Disclaimer, I received a free copy to review. My thoughts and opinions are entirely my own, though
This was a very good book ^-^ both cute and a bit emotional. I enjoyed everyone's dynamic. Everyone had good chemistry, and the interactions were fun to read. I enjoyed seeing characters (I'm not gonna say who!) healing and moving on. It's not too long, it's the perfect length. The ending ties the story up really nicely.
