Sophie and Doug are back after their adventures in Sophie: Jurassic Bark, and are ready for more adventures loosely based on some popular stories. Doug is crawling now, and is a dangerous hugger! The two reprise their roles as Batman characters in The Bark Night, and are determined to thwart the efforts of cats Equinox and Chewy to dominate the world. For their part, the cats are consulting Cat Thulhu about how they should best conquer their home, and it's suggested that they must first endear themselves to be truly effective. Just when Sophie is used to the baby as well as the cats, a new challenge is introduced: the family takes in three foster puppies! James and Jenny are soon adopted, and Sophie is relieved to get them out of her space, but James remains. He's sad that his siblings are gone, and Sophie not only consoles him, but tries to instruct the interloper on how to best snare a human. Even the cats are asked for help, but they of course have other evil plans to work on, like highjacking the smart speaker and trying to harness its technology. When Jack is also adopted, Sophie is glad because she got what she asked for, but soon realizes that she is actually sad, which is a hard situation to justify in her mind. Soon, though, there is another foster dog, Annie, who is a very large dog who is tired of everyone making assumptions about her personality just because of her size. This leads into a Frankenstein fantasy with Annie in the title role. There is also a plot by the squirrels to retrieve a flash drive from the cats, kidnapping by aliens, and an Alice in Wonderland style adventure.

These books are compilations of Anderson's web comic, Dog Eat Doug, and based loosely on his own life with a small child and multiple pets. Like Schade and Buller's Scarlett: Star on the Run, McDonnell's Mutts books, or Dunn's Breaking Cat News, Sophie introduces us to intrepid animal characters (as well as an infant and then toddler who communicates solely through saying "Bak!") who have the kind of adventures we all imagine our pets have when our backs are turned. I, for one, am glad to see that my theory that cats are evil and are planning world domination was upheld by Equinox and Chewy's antics!

While I haven't taken a deep dive into the web comic on which this is based, I imagine that the episodes in the compilations are mostly based on the daily comics, but given chapter headings that tie together a series of strips on particular topics. This works well, and fans of Lincoln Peirce's Big Nate (who says this strip is "the perfect mis of heart, humor, and hilarity) will be glad to pick these up.

I'm never a huge fan of drawings where the characters don't have eyeballs, so I was a bit put off by the style of eyes, but there's always something about cartoon style drawings that distract me; at least the noses were perfectly fine, and the humans are rendered ala Peanuts; only seen off panel or from the waist down.

Middle school students today have a much different relationship with comics than I did. They don't read newspapers, so don't get a daily dose of dozens of favorite characters. They are more likely to pick up a collection of strips and immerse themselves in the world. As someone who read Funky Winkerbean every day for nearly fifty years, it makes me sad, but that's the way the world works. My students will pick up Sophie and be enthralled by her fantastical adventures with Doug.

Sophie Frankenstein's Hound & Sophie Jurassic Bark are hilarious, fun, engaging, fast-paced, fantastic, creative, and unique reads! This graphic novel series brings the humor and the heart! I honestly could never predict where the story would go and what would happen next. These books are creativity at their finest. Superheros, the wild west, dinosaurs, mid evil times, space, crazy science experiments and so much more......it may not sound like it all flows together, but somehow these books blend this bundle of fun perfectly. Sophie is a lovable character and her perspective is so fun! Her personal life is a bit crazy with the arrival of a new human baby and two power-hungry cats. This book is truly one of the dreamers and animal lovers. Plus, they are already a pre-existing comic strip if you can't get enough and want to dive in more until the next release! I love these books!

A delightful second story collection to the new Sophie graphic novels. This time, Sophie's world changes again as Mom and Dad decide they are going to foster puppies. Sophie is put in charge of making sure these puppies know how to puppy, but instead, they lead her and Doug off to bigger adventures. Whether it is out into space, a mysterious castle, or ancient Japan Sophie spends her time caring for those around her and trying her best to be a good dog. The cats also do not help as they continue their trek to take over the world, which often backfires. Sophie's biggest struggle is wanting her own space, but also wanting to be with her family. This is a delightful series and I hope to see more of Sophie in the future.

SOPHIE: FRANKENSTEIN’S HOUND follows the continuing adventures of pup Sophie and her baby brother Doug. Just when Sophie has started to adjust to sharing her life with Doug and a pair of questionable cats, her parents surprise her with a rotating array of foster puppies. In Sophie style, she greets the arrivals with a series of creative adventures based on classic themes and tales. Humor and heart continue to be front and center in the book’s engaging episodic comic panels.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sharing an eARC of the book with me.

Back for more adventures in book 2, Sophie and Doug deal with new foster 🐾 pups and the mastermind 😼😼 cats plotting to take over their home. This round is packed with knights, dragons, veterinarian ghouls, a cosmic muffin, space travel, sock fighting ninjas, yetis, and more!
My son adored both of these graphic novels. I imagine any child who loves animals and has a sense of adventure or imagination would love them too. There’s so much going on that I’m sure there’s at least a little something for everyone.

I received a free eARC of this e-comic from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

To call this a graphic novel is a little misleading. It is a series of shorter tales. They are all cute and funny. The way that Anderson captures the innocence of babies and dogs is captivating. He has a way of looking at the world through these characters that just speaks to me. This is a book to read and enjoy.

Book 2 was just as cute as the first book was, this time we have some new characters. So we get to see our main puppy struggle with the fact that they want their home all to themselves and missing characters when they leave. This pup has grown since the first book and I cant wait to see where their journey goes next. Also, the art makes all of the characters in this book so adorable, the artiest did such a wonderful job.

This is another adorable graphic novel about Sophie the chocolate lab and her human baby brother Doug. There were some new pets added to the family including two cats and foster dogs. The cats were hilarious. They were always plotting to take over the world. This book was even funnier than the first one.

Sophie: Frankenstein’s Hound is a funny kids graphic novel!

Another full color graphic novel from the creator of the Dog Eat Doug comic strips. I love the longer format of these books. They have same whimsical characters but with room for more complex plots and more fanciful artwork.

I was really happy to see the inclusion of Annie who featured in the webtoons version of the strip.

Just when Sophie thinks life is returning to a new normal, her family takes in a series of foster dogs. Between caring for the pups, preventing the household cats from taking over the world, and handling her daily tasks (like waking her dad in the middle of the night and battling drawers full of ninja socks), Sophie’s life is anything but ordinary! Will she ever find a way to make sense of it all?

In this webcomic-turned-graphic novel, each chapter is a largely self-contained mini-adventure. Sophie is the protagonist and primary point-of-view character, but there are occasional sections narrated from the perspectives of other characters, like “Cati-ficial Intelligence,” which is—of course—told by the infamous cats.

Though Frankenstein’s Hound is the second book in the series, it can easily be enjoyed on its own. A brief introduction at the start provides a rundown of the main characters and key events from Jurassic Bark, making it accessible to new readers.

Filled with pop-culture references (think Batman, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Alice in Wonderland) and featuring adorable, full-color illustrations in a variety of panel layouts, Sophie’s zany and heartfelt adventures are sure to captivate kids.

Recommended as an optional purchase for ages 7-10.
