Meet MMA Fighter and Piper Sullivan's roommate extraordinaire, Kelly Black, in a South Boys Novella. This story takes you on Kelly's journey to love and overcoming a broken past. Around 24,000 words, it can be read as a standalone or for more enjoyment, can be read along with Southbound Surrender (A South Boys Novel).
Raen Smith is the author of the Unraveled Series and Southbound Surrender. She loves writing about complex characters with a sprinkling of happily ever after.
When she isn't writing novels, she spends her time wrangling two small sons and teaching at a technical college. She lives in a small corner of Wisconsin with her husband and two sons.
has finally met his match, Olivia, a leggy blond yoga instructor.
His best friend/roomie, Piper, decides to play matchmaker only for him to get turned down, she doesn’t date fighters… luckily for him he is a research scientist by day, allowing him to charm his way into a "non-date". Totally out of his element, he begins to treat her differently than anyone else that has come into his life. Conceited to his own fault, this quick-tempered bad-boy has never met anyone he’s ever wanted to change for allowing him to hopefully face his past.
Southpaw was a short novella with a cliffhanger, told from Kelly's POV. I'm not really sure what to make of the entire story as I feel like it was only the beginning. I read this as a stand-alone, so I went in blind. I'm not sure that if I read the first one would it be a totally different experience for me, maybe, although the description does say it can be read as a stand-alone for my enjoyment. There was a hot little scene in the boxing ring, which was HOT, but I don’t know, it’s not enough to really understand who they are or what the big deal is. You just know he has issues, I mean his therapist is mentioned almost all the time. I have to give it to him though, he didn’t hold back or try to dance around his past, but what I wanted to know is why her? Why now? I guess I’ll have to read the next one just to find out.
Side Note: If you’re like me and just jumped in without doing your homework, Piper’s past was mentioned more than once in the book, which made me real curious as to what the deal is with her, apparently the first book in this series is actually her story. I just found out after I finished this little shortie.

3,5 Stars! A very nicelly written book, more like a prequel for the main book. I liked it very much. Although it's quite short, the story is fully developed and the characters well adjusted. Short and Sweet..
Kelly "The Dude" is a biotechnologist with a big fire in his heart, and in order to keep his demons at bay he takes part in fights every Tuesday. One Tuesday he will meet Olivia, the yoga instructor...
Olivia was a nice character lovable and all that, but my favorite was Piper. I just love this girl. She was such an intense and a little lunatic person.. Absolutely awesome..
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK
- Male POV. - I want to read Piper's story like crazy. - The female name.. Aww the poor guy.. - The writing is good and the story easy and fulfilling..

Kelly Black was first introduced as Piper's roommate in Southbound Surrender. Bio-tech nerd by day, ladies man and on Tuesday nights, fighter. He holds his past close and those nights in the ring is how he releases that rage. That's also where he sees her for the first time. Olivia Ghirardelli, the fill-in ring girl, catches his eye. She's not in to the type of guy that needs to trample someone else, but there is something about Kelly that makes her second guess her first impression.
Southpaw was a cute, quick read that was very much enjoyed. I typically like my books to have a bit more angst and drama to them, but this was a nice break from the stress of those types of reads. Raen Smith does a good job giving you enough of a story within the confines of a novella. Kelly was someone that caught my eye in SS, but I think him getting a novella was perfect, not sure if a full book would have worked as well given that he was truly a good guy at heart, although his man-whore ways were mentioned in passing, he just didn't come across with that bad-boy edge. But giving us this dose of him with Olivia was perfect.
I've enjoyed both stories in this series so far and will continue on with the journey.

This is book is a "mini book" between Southbound Surrender and what I assume will be book 2. Be warned- I think this should be labelled ".5" not "1.5"- that's just my personally opinion. If you read Southbound and Surrender, you'll find that Raen Smith's unique writing style is back. This book, similar to it's predecessor is also in a male POV.
Southpaw focus's on Piper's roommate Kelly who we met briefly in the prior book- and takes place before we even knew Cash/Piper.
I found this book to be a lot less "sweet" and a lot more "raw" than the first, this may also have to do with the hottie main character Kelly. While the plot deals with some heavy issues, we never get a chance to flush them out due to the length of the novel. The relationship between Kelly and Olivia seems a bit rushed but again, I think this is due to the length of the book. If you really enjoyed Southbound and Surrender, this is a quick novel to get you through until the next book is published. I just wish that it introduced new characters for us instead of older characters. Had this been published prior to book 1, I would have been salivating for Cash and Piper's story.
Steam: Eeehhh, really there isn't any. I think this is more of a short character development novella. There's one sex scene which is brief but well placed.
When I read Southbound Surrender, I was mostly taken by Smith writing style. I mean I REALLY liked it. So I was excited to get my hands on to Kelly's story. And my first thought, after I finished? Damn, that was too short!
This is set before Southbound, though it is a follow up novella and it works as a standalone. If you have never read anything by Smith. My advise give this a try!
The writing style is again, just fabulous! With Southpaw Smith has cemented out a place in my reader-heart. In fact I already checked if there will be anther sequel, but so far sadly, I couldn't find any evidence for one.
The plot is less Hollywood blockbuster and way more subtle than Southbound. Are there still some cliche romance plots? Yeah, there are, but this is a romance novel after all, so well, there needs to be some drama and definitely dates and banter and well there is some insta-lust as well. But all of it is done, well, beautifully. I guess the therapy scene is rather a tinseltown move. Let me put this just out there- someone should make these books into movies! They the kind of romances I would totally watch. Let me tell you this is quite an admission- I'm not easily swayed into going to watch ChickFlicks- just ask my girlfriends! - I'm more of a kickass-action kind of a girl. Southpaw, has many little details, I enjoyed. I loved their non-dates and how Kelly realizes - to his shock he wants somehow more than just one night.
The character building is my favorite part, again! This is written from Kelly's POV. Just like in Southbound, I feel like I know Kelly now. His voice is so distinctly different from Cash-way more intense and also more arrogant. Seeing Piper from Kelly's POV, is amazing-she suddenly is more caring, feisty sister than mysterious siren. In fact after reading this, quite a lot of her behavior in Southbound make more sense. It was seriously nice reading about her again,
Oh and slightly off topic- did you notice the cover? Yep, pweety! isn't it? *Grins* I have to say South Boys sports very nice covers.
So this is a really good 4Stars, just wish it was a tad bit longer. And more importantly I wanna know who is next! And when can I get my hands on it? A must read for lovers of the genre!
I love Southpaw. After reading the first book Southbound Surrender which the Author makes me love her writings. Southpaw is great story which is written in Kelly's POV. If you read the first book you will know him as Piper's roommate/bff. Basically it was Kelly's journey of life meeting Olivia "his match" learning to love and to trust someone despite of his past. I every much enjoy reading the story cuz I've been hooked up since the beginning. I love both characters, I just wish it was written longer cuz If you read this you really want to read more. Overall it was great read and I definitely looking forward to read more of the series and the authors other work.
This was the first book of this author I have read, but it won't be the last. I loved her style of writing. As for the story, I loved it. It was easy to fall in love with the characters. Being #1.5 in this series and having not read the first book I hoped that I hadn't missed vital bits for reading this…as far as I could tell I hadn't. It was fine reading this as a standalone novel in my opinion. I thought the way in which the story was told was perfect- it was only told from Kelly's/male POV.
After having finished reading Sounthbound Surrender, I wanted of learn more about others characters, in particular Kelly, Piper's friend. The little that we knows of him sincerely makes us want to learn some more and the summary who doesn't say any enough. This novel proceeds 6 months before Piper and Cash's story is simple and go right to the goal. That doesn't want to say that it's not heavy in feelings, of secrets and bounces!
Kelly is without any possible doubt my favorite character, it's one of the reason why I prefered Southpawn from the previous book of the series. He is funny, charmer, in spite of his past dark, violent and, let's say it, sleep with all that has "beautiful legs", we can only stick to him, to adore him! He is full of himself, of his physique, and yet he doesn't like to fight, he doesn't live from being a fighter, besides that he's working in a laboratory and he's called more than once a geek. His past heavily marked him, it will be necessary for him to surmount many obstacles in order to become "a good person", only if he gave himself a second chance.
It's there that come Olivia, although Piper already started the job. It's besides Piper which will make so that the two of them finish together. Well, Olivia is a yoga's tutor and a last year student in science. She hates the fights, the men who only do that, which will pose some problem with Kelly at the beginning. She doesn't fear to say what she thinks, prove to be brave and that she's tolerant. She looks like Piper and I think that these two there must be as thick as thieves and to make some troubles for Kelly.
The story is rather simple: Kelly who really didn't have chance with his first name, is gifted for fighting and lives with the shade of his father. He tries to give himself a second chance, not to do anymore stupidities and never again treat women like objects. It's initially his meeting with Piper that will change him, then his feelings for Olivia. This romance is really beautiful, pure and obviousness like a headlight in full storm. It's more than obvious that they are made for each other, this idea of destiny is once again re-examined.
Once again we finds ourself with an excellent New Adult story that moves us, that proposes a difficult relationship, but the love always comes to end from all. Kelly is full with charms and involves us in his adventures, at the point that in the last page we finds ourself saying "already finished?!". A novel that you have to read at all costs, if not you will pass beside something!
This story is about an underground ring fighting. Kelly James Black is a 24 year old Research Scientist with past family issues that lets off steam by fighting in these fights. He sees his therapist who tells him that it is better to do the fighting in the ring then it is to do it on the street and get arrested like he has already once. One of his best friends and roommate is a student and a girl names Piper Sullivan who is dealing with her own family issues and is crashing on his couch after one night she helped him home after a night out of fighting and drinking too much. He made a pass at him she refused it she put him to bet and fell asleep on his couch to keep an eye on him and never left. She plans on fixing him. They argue and he says she is the little sister he never had. Then one night at one of his fights he sees and meets the one and only woman that has ever really rocked his world and is starting to change his world in a positive way. She too is a student ready to graduate soon and she is in the life sciences program and she is a yoga teacher. He is changing his thinking around her for the good. But… Although I liked this story to me it really felt like I was left hanging. You know with so many unanswered questions, I just really don’t enjoy that feeling. I like that Olivia stood by him for Kelly he was able to work through some major issues in some ways but had a whole lot more to go through. As for Piper, I really felt like there was this past love she was pining over that she was in love with Kelly too. I am not sure she or even Kelly got it. Maybe not but that was my take on it. It all just seemed so rushed too. I understand it must be a novella but still. So I chose the middle grown with giving it a rating a three star. Provided by netgalley.com. Mini-Review: This is the story of Kelly Black: a research scientist by day and part time underground fighter by night. As we first meet Kelly, he is a serial man-whore / commitment-phobe with narcissistic tendencies. His roommate/fight-ring assistant is Piper Sullivan, a girl with a broken heart, intent on "fixing" Kelly. After a chance meeting with a girl named Olivia - that Kelly cannot get out of his mind, Piper hatches a plan to get them together.
What I liked: *The characters were easy to like and I wanted to get to know them better. *The back story for Kelly, Piper and Olivia all seemed interesting - though we did not get anything much in depth (due to this being a novella). *The writing style was easy to read and kept me turning the pages. *There are a ton of MMA/Underground fight books out there - and this one was just a little different from others I have read. This made it interesting.
What I wished was different: *Honestly, I wish this had been a full novel. I liked the characters, but I wanted them to be a little more developed. Everything happened so fast, and it was almost *too fast*. There would be plenty of material to make this into a full length story, especially if you factor in more of the back stories of the main characters. I wanted there to be more build up in the relationship between Kelly and Olivia.
Overall - a nice, short read that I just wish were a little more than it already is.
I was really looking forward to Southpaw, a novella on Kelly who we met (super) briefly in Southbound Surrender. Although I found Southbound Surrender only 'ok' I was hoping I'd relate a little more to this book as Kelly seemed such an interesting character.
Kelly is a little more than just a muscle bound, 1 dimensional character. At first I found his constant thoughts of women and what he wanted to do with them a little much, we get it, we were told enough why he was like that and yet I just felt like we were told too much. As the book progressed my feelings on Kelly did change. As much as I wasn't keen on Piper as a character, Kelly made up for it.
I've always struggled a bit with novellas (This is just a personal thing) and prefer a fuller length book, something that sweeps me away, where as Southpaw I felt I whooshed through it literally and it was over before it began. I would have liked a full book on Kelly, I actually feel his story could have been better than Piper and Cash's story if I'm honesty (Which I found a little mediocre at times).
I gave Southpaw 3.5 (I know it only really counts as a 3 ranking) but feel it deserves the half a mark. It was good, I did enjoy this novella and Kelly is one hell of a character (He is mighty fine eye candy too!). I would recommend this book over Southbound Surrender if you like a character with a little more 'edge'.
This is my 4 star review for Southpaw by Raen Smith. Southpaw in a short novella in the hero’s POV. Kelly “The Dude” Black is a nerdy Biochemist by day and a sexy MMA fighter by night. He isn’t really looking for a steady relationship. He is content to live his life with one night stands and a routine existence that makes him happy. Thing get interesting when he meets Sexy ring girl Olivia on one of his fight nights. She is beautiful, but doesn’t seem to be interested in what he has to offer. What will happen when his accidental roommate Piper takes him to a Yoga class that he will never forget? Will Olivia be able to look past the fighter and see the man underneath? This was a short and cute read. It gave us a complete novella in a man’s POV which is very rare. Our hero was strong and thankfully so was the heroine. So many times you read stories with a weaker heroine. I think Olivia held her own in this one. She didn’t give in to him easily and he didn’t come off as a complete jerk. The plot was simple yet enticing and it kept me engaged. I will have to read more from this author in hopes of getting more on Piper and Cash’s story. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a sexy fighter with a nerdy side.
Southpaw is the Prequel to Southbound Surrender, telling the story of Piper’s roommate Kelly Black, research scientist by day, MMA fighter at night and relationship train wreck at all times. We learn that Kelly is in therapy to deal with his relationship issues, and that Piper spends time on his couch and is in his corner for fights.
I loved getting a sneak peak at the time Piper was gone from Appleton, and getting to know Kelly better. His brief appearance in Southbound piqued your interest, but didn’t give you anything to work with. This is his story, how he meets the girlfriend he has tattooed on his arm and how he works through the raw deal he was dealt with the loss of his father and the death of his mother, that still haunts him. You get to watch Kelly grow up in front of your eyes and woo Olivia, although you get the idea the Olivia is doing more of the wooing at times.
Raen Smith has an incredible way of bringing touching stories to life. My only complaint is that it was just too short, I loved this story and would have enjoyed seeing more of it. I only hope that we see more of Kelly and Olivia in future stories!
I think I liked this book because there was more to it than just the two main characters Kelly and Olivia but let’s start with them first. Kelly is tricked by his roommate Piper to believe that Olivia is already taken, which makes him want her even more. Once he finds out that she is single, he goes for the TKO. The story is about how Olivia is hesitant in starting a relationship with a fighter and how Kelly needs to overcome his past. They are two good, main characters that keep the story interesting but what really pushed me over the edge into continuing with this series is Piper.
Piper is Kelly’s roommate that just seems super cool so when you find out that she is in love with a guy that she hasn’t seen in years, you kind of become interested in why. This makes me want to read the first book Southbound Surrender just so I can get Piper’s background story.
I do think that Southpaw should be labeled as a #0.5 instead of a #1.5 because it takes place before Piper’s story, which is the first book in the series.

For plain clarity and logic this book should have come before 'Southbound Surrender', but I can see why it did not.
'The Dude' is his nickname/fight name but only in the cage/ring. Kelly has a driving desire/need to fight and he is very good at what he does. This need grows in hi and may be the barrier to love.
Kelly has an understanding of what drives him and works to keep it from affect those close to him and even his new interest. With this new relationship he learns to accept himself for who he is.
Smith provides a recounting of a young man's journey to understanding and acceptance of himself and love from others. Her words on the page provides clarity and understanding of the struggle he goes through. Kelly's POV makes the big difference in the story line.
It seems that the story didn't do much character building, at times it was hard to keep interested in the story. The book felt very rushed, and left a lot of unanswered questions with the characters of the book. Basically felt like the whole book was a short synopsis, when it really had the elements to be great, had more background and character building, relationship building between the characters. And the whole story line between Piper and Cash. I see she washers broken, but to put a storyline in for them and basically leave it unfinished, is unneeded. Finally t h ere is mention of a rematch, does it happen or not? Yes again I totally feel the story was to rushed, and at the end of the day I feel like it was a overall waste of time.
The author packs a lot in a quick read, but it does not feel rushed. I have not read "Southbound Surrender" but I can tell you that this book makes me want to! Piper is his roommate, and she is out to fix Kelly- she might not be able to, but she can set him on the road to love. Kelly Black has a bit of an ego but once he meets Olivia he is taken down a notch. Now for the first time in his life he has to figure out how to date someone instead of bedding them. As for the ending there is so much more that could be written. Some might consider it a cliff hanger ,but I think it was great, and I felt like Kelly just might be able to move forward.
I loved this book ! Novella or not, I thought it was spectacular. It completely sucked me in from word one and I didn't want it to end. Especially not with that little bit of a cliffhanger. I love the relationship between Kelly and Piper and I love the way things unfolded with Olivia. The flow of this novella was outstanding. never once was I left questioning what was happening or doubting the was the story was going. It was awesome. I just wish it was longer ...sigh. Though my heart truly broke for Piper and I'm pretty sure she may have been losing her mind there for a minute. I am truly intrigued to see how this all plays out! Raen did a fabulous job with this novella
As a stand-alone this novella might confuse first time readers, but reading it after Southbound Surrender (South Boys, #1) I was happy to see how Kelly got his HEA - or at least a glimpse at it, I hope that he'll get a full book! The story was short, but perfect (if you already know about the characters, introduced in Book #1) and it's refreshing to read this from a male POV for once ;)
There wasn't much romance or steamy scenes -due to the size of the novella-, but I think this little novella is a quick treat until we get the next book in the series.
I enjoyed this story I thought the characters were great, especially Kelly "The Dude" Black. I thought he was sexy as hell but also sweet and caring with his friend Piper and emotional about his past and someday future. I enjoyed Piper's character too, I wish I knew more about her, she seems like fun and a perfect friend for Kelly. Olivia I liked too, she's a genuine person who isn't what she seems at first. I enjoyed her and Kelly together. I hope to read more with these too, great story, although short it packed a punch pun Intended...lol..4 stars review by Nanee at upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com
Thanks netgalley for a free read in exchange for a review. What a decent read....I'm not sure what I expected going in but this was really good and it even got a laugh out of me. This is definitely one of my better reads lately even though it's short length. It's well written and witty. I am impressed and I will definitely put this author on my to read list. The cover was pretty hot, and the title was interesting.....but the synopsis is what caught my eye. Character development was good, pretty ideal for a short length book and this is part of a series so I'm sure the flow is great. Ending kind of cliffhangered....but overall entertainment was four stars.
Southpaw is the follow up to Southbound Surrender, however even though it is the follow up, it takes you back to before Cash found Piper again. This story however was about Kelly Black and his troubles with girls. He was.... what you would call a bit of a player, cassanova, etc. However, I believe he has found the one to be able to change him. Make him a better man.
5 stars! Would love to see more of Olivia and Kelly's story!
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Very quick, often funny, entertaining read. Boy sees girl, boy wants girl, girl makes him to work to get her. Great story without any fluff to create extra length. He is a hot, self-sure, womanizer MMA fighter/scientist, he is a hot mess and in therapy. She is a smart and beautiful yoga instructor/ student with self esteem, she wants nothing to do with his kind. They surprisingly hit it off well on their non-date and make a steamy pair. This story worked well as short and sweet, but I would have enjoyed a little fluff.
Southpaw is book 1.5 in the South Boys series. I read the first book Southbound Surrender and we meet Kelly briefly in it. Even though we meet Kelly in the first book, i think you would be okay reading this one without reading book one first. It is told in Kelly's POV. Kelly releases his rage by being a part time fighter. Olivia is a fill in ring girl and yoga instructor. Kelly has met his match with Olivia. Southpaw is a short, quick read and it has a cliffhanger.
Recieved an ARC for an honest review and I have to say that I loved it. This book is a spinoff of Southbound Surrender but takes place while Cash and Piper are apart. Kelly's story is heartbreaking. You can relate and understand him and really hope that Olivia is the one for him. I hope to read more about these two in the near future.
I really enjoyed this novella. Kelly is your typical bad boy who wants a relationship but really can't handle it and has a lot of "baggage". He finds that one girl that makes him work a little harder & helps him bring out his genuine side. I loved learning about some of Piper's time away from Cash and learning a bit more about her reasons for staying away.
Received an ARC for an honest review. This book is a spinoff of Southbound Surrender. It takes place during the time that Cash and Piper are apart.I really liked Kelly and his story and I understood him completely.I hope there will be more to Kelly and Olivia's story.Read this book.
