A startling + superlative stylist, the six stories in this slim volume (also published as Killachter Meadow and Felo de Se), are prime Higgins. The opening story, ‘Killachter Meadow’ is an extraordinary story concerning the decline of the Kervick sisters, and simply astonishes with its darkly comic vibrato. Higgins is a Teutonophile, and works in German quotations, or sets several stories in the Fatherland, in fact, his stories are more European in style and influence, screwing him unfairly to obscurity.
