a fun and silly story I read with my 9 year old daughter. lots of lovely pictures and a good one to do funny voices.

Leuk, magisch, grappig, avontuurlijk, maf, maar op punten toch ook weer dat ik het gevoel had dat ik dit al eens eerder had gelezen, een soortgelijk verhaal.

A victory pose is definitely in order. I have finished the first, long anticipated, Super Happy Magic Forest chapter book and it is a fizzing frolic of fun!
For those that are not familiar with Super Magic Happy Forest, it is a picture book bursting to the brim with super settings, hapless (or not so hapless) heroes and an epic quest to save the 'Magic Crystals of Life'. Told in a comic-style format, this 'Lord of the Ring' spoof is imaginative, hilarious and sparkles like sunbeams on the sea. Thank goodness the incredibly talented Matty Long added to the collection with Salty Dogs, Super Happy Frozen Forest and Super Happy Magic Forest: Slug of Doom. My son has requested them all.
The chapter book format didn't disappoint and is the perfect next step for those wanting more. The plot is deliciously fiendish yet drenched with a happy light-heartedness. The five heroes are loveable yet totally madcap. Trevor the Mushroom is a wonderful champion for disability, Blossom blasts apart gender stereotype and Herbert is a whizz at finding sprite jam. Who'd have thought?
To save the Rainbow Dragon and the whole of Super Happy Magic Forest from the festering, filth of the Humongous Fungus and his spores, the five heroes are entrusted by Gnomedalf and Shroomsworth to find five key ingredients for an antidote. But when the medicine fails to work, will they ever be able to stop the toxic spread of Fungellus' evil?
The story offers entertainment for the whole family. Aged from 4-40, we giggled, frolicked and quested with the heroes until we could quest no more and we found that the book does offer an antidote that works! It is a much needed dose of silliness to counteract these serious times.
We thought there were a few too many characters - some a bit similar to others - and weren't sure whether the 'Happiness Committee' were all needed. However, they offered some fun parodies to real life which added an extra layer for adult readers. The ice-cream tree, candyfloss cave and hugberry island were massive hits with my little ones and got them imagining other delicious places which they could add to the map. My four year old enjoyed the story so much, he is still delightfully carrying the book around with him whilst my autistic daughter, aged 9, is still giggling over the unicorn poop.
So to round things up: This is a slapstick sizzler of a story full of smiles, spores and 'fun guys'! We can't wait for the release of Happy Magic Forest and the Portals of Panic - coming October 1st 2020.

Every 100 years the Rainbow Dragon wakes up from her nap in the Sacred Glade to recharge the crystals that keep the Super Happy Magic Forest magical and happy. But as they hold the party for the Rainbow Dragon to wake up and make her centennial appearance, something goes very, very wrong. The Rainbow Dragon is sick! What is hiding in her Sacred Glade and can they remove it from the forest in time before it infects everything and everyone?
Another fun chapter book adventure with the Super Happy Magic Forest questing gang. This time Trevor gets his chance to shine, even if he doesn't have arms. Adult fantasy lovers will enjoy all the nods to classic fantasy lit, and young readers will enjoy the humor and imaginative and eventful quest with lots of illustrations. This would be a great family or class read aloud as long as you can get everyone close enough to see the pictures (or project them).
Notes on content: No language issues or sexual content. There are some very perilous situations and nasty spores causing creatures to become grumpy and mean and vomit a lot. A battle results in an explosion. The doctor has his hands full at the end, but it appears most will be ok soon.

I had seen and thoroughly enjoyed a couple of episodes of the CBBC series, so I wanted to check out the books. The TV series definitely managed to carry the charm of the books over! ❤
Lots of fun with lots of great illustrations (I the colour edition), traditonal-ish fantasy settings & characters made original with wit and a very English sensibility/sense of humour, making fantasy quests accesible for younger audiences. (Though you certainly don't need to be a child to enjoy or apprecite it!)
Moral of the story: NEVER let anything happen to Trevor - he's in charge of the group's braincell!😆

So I happened upon Matty Long's picture books as I was reading my way through all our library's picture books. And then there were these! Our daughter loves them. A bad mushroom releases his evil spores on the super happy magic forest. Will the heroes be able to defeat them? Will Trevor turn to the dark side? So funny.

CUTE! The illustrations in this book make it so fun and whimsical (most pages have pictures). Each character's got their own quirk and the mushroom Trevor develops self confidence in this story. Short cozy adventure quest story for kids and adults that like a little goofiness. It reads easy so good for that 3rd-ish grade level.

It was so good. The ideas were free, silly but awesome. A giant evil mushroom? I am surprised in a good way. Mushrooms are not weak at all. Loving the ideas people!!! Keep on going, I wish I could read the rest rn. Open ur eyes people, something good is right in front of you! Summary: Engrossing book full of laughter, joy and silliness. Worth buying and full of fun, crazy ideas. Keep on reading.

I loved the section when fungelles exploded. It was funny when all the mushrooms 🍄 jumped on FUNGELLESS. There was a plant 🪴 that Trevor didn't recognise. It was eating and digesting mushroom folk.
