In 2097 many former Earth colonies have been subsumed by the Alliance, a totalitarian regime that uses drugs, poverty, and intimidation to subjugate planets to produce the goods and services needed to keep their empire running and support the ruling class.
A disastrous mission and betrayal force Tam to live in hiding, taking any job available to stay alive and out of Alliance hands. Suddenly a client makes a dangerous offer, one that requires trusting an enemy and flying into the heart of the Alliance. Even worse, it means three weeks of sharing Tam's only refuge with an arrogant stranger. Will peace be worth the price?

I really enjoyed this book. It is a fast paced sci-fi adventure set in a futuristic dystopia where our hero Tam navigates a universe by scraping a living from the ship her father left to her. The universe is treacherous place. You have a shattered earth and it's now run amuck loosely nationalistic colonies and criminal elements vying for control of resources. Can’t a ship owner just make an honest living without getting on the wrong side of someone? No.
The main character “Tam” forced me to consider what the child of Han Solo and Buffy (The Vampire Slayer) might be. “Tam” embodies characteristics of both of those archetypes: hard drinking, passionate, smart, lethal, young, dry wit, hot and driven. An intriguing character to observe, by the end of the book I just wanted more, more background, more adventure and some resolutions.
The book is primarily an adventure with a story ark bordering on epic and enough mystery to keep you guessing. The future technology is presented for the most part as matter-of-fact and not dwelled on in much detail. The politics could be complicated but T.E. Sharp mercifully keeps it simple for the reader. You have your Association (over bearing government), Syndicate (organized crime consortium) and the Alliance (confederation of factions rebelling against the Association). The combat is fast paced but easy to follow. The sex (not enough of it) is hot and mainly implied. The humor is dry but highly entertaining.
"I know people say stupid things. I'm just surprised when they say them to me." Tam
I look forward to reading more from T.E. Sharp about Tam and the dystopia she has designed. It’s a great setting for many stories no doubt to come. This would be a great weekend/beach read.
