A Different Kind of Honor

Rate this book
It's 1879, and Lt. Cmdr. Peter Wake, U.S.N., is on special assignment as the official American neutral naval observer to the War of the Pacific raging along the west coast of South America. Chile, having invaded Bolivia, has gone on to overrun Peru and controls the entire southeastern Pacific region. Washington, concerned over European involvement in the war and the French effort to build a canal through Panama, has sent Wake to observe local events. During Wake's dangerous mission—as naval observer, diplomat, and spy—he will witness history's first battle between oceangoing ironclads, ride the world's first deep-diving submarine, face his first machine guns in combat, advise the French trying to build the Panama Canal, and run for his life in the Catacombs of the Dead in Lima, Peru. Macomber's sixth novel in the Honor series won the highest national honor in his the American Library Association's 2008 W.Y. Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction.

Number six in the Honor series, this title finds Lieutenant Commander Peter Wake serving as a Naval observer in Latin America. Peter continues to make allies as he attempts to evaluate the political status of various countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It’s interesting to learn the history of this region during an active war and to follow Peter’s exciting adventures. His life continues to evolve as he faces new challenges ahead. Another thrilling installment in this engaging series!

I enjoyed this book and the continuing story of Peter Wake. There is an incredible amount of research that Bob Macomber does into the historical events and locations when and where his stories takes place. At several places in the book Peter Wake was walking in Panama and Wash D.C. and I could imagine the architecture of the buildings he was seeing based upon the descriptions by Bob Macomber. This effect of the detail is both good and bad which is why I rated this book 3 stars. It was good in that it invoked my imagination, however, in some cases I think Bob went beyond what was necessary and the story dragged as a result, i.e. a balance must be struck as to the amount of non-fiction detail to not distract from the plot.

The story was great and kept me reading page after page not wanting to put the book down....Terrific Job, Upward & Onward!
