Sholay is an iconic Hindi (Bollywood) movie.I think, anyone with a slightest interest in Bollywood must have had the pleasure to enjoy this classic on TV or any other medium.Creating a comic based on a classical Bollywood movie is not an easy job. Probably, the creators thought that just translation of dialogues from the movie and some good sketches will make the comic book a classic. But,graphic novels or comics are not written that way.I agree that the sketches were good and the attempt was genuine, but still the job was half baked. I award 2.5 stars which round up to three. It is not a collectable item, just an item which cashes on the movie 'Sholay'
Even though it wants to introduce the magic of Sholay to those that haven't seen the film, this graphic novel works only if you're a fan of the movie. It's a good enough supplement to have but brings nothing interesting or new to the table. The film is so iconic due to it's characters and dialogue that it's impossible to replicate the same intensity and wonder on paper. And as stated before, if you haven't seen the film, the book is even less likely to be interesting. However, the art is good and I look forward to some of the more original works that the publishers are planing to produce.
Discovered that the graphic novel of 'Sholay' has come out and got it today. Read it in one sitting. It is a good attempt at telling the 'Sholay' story in graphic novel format. The story told in the graphic novel is more or less faithful to that told in the movie. But while reading the graphic novel I realized that translating a movie into a graphic novel has got its own challenges and many things can get lost. For example, the love story of Veeru and Basanti is not sufficiently explored in the graphic novel and the love story of Jai and Radha is mostly absent. Jai playing the harmonica while Radha listens to it - that was one of the haunting scenes in the movie and it is missing in the graphic novel. Also Gabbar's 'Kitney aadmi they?' dialogue is not as powerful in English (it reads 'How many were they?' It hardly has the same impact.) Also the Thakur's dialogue - 'Kyunki loha lohey ko kaat-tha hai' is missing in the graphic novel. I think that was an iconic dialogue in the movie. And Jai's humour, though it is apparent in one or two scenes, is mostly absent. And, of course, the songs are missing :) But it is difficult to blame the graphic novel writers for that. A good attempt to adapt this iconic movie into graphic novel form. It requires atleast twice the present size to do justice. But a good attempt nevertheless. A treat to 'Sholay' fans.
Not one for those who haven't watched and loved the movie growing up. for those of us who have: the English translations of 'yeh haath mujhe dede thakur' and the like will have you in tears of joy :D
A bit too faithful to the film, except they could have made AB look more like AB. Still, grateful to find it via library hoopla account, and very much looking forward to reading GABBAR.
