For over two hundred years, the high walls of Nedrath have stood strong, housing what could be the last twelve thousand human beings. At least those who remain uninfected.
Conflicted by duty and tempted by forbidden love, Princess Adira longs to break the stifling, cruel traditions, and be more than simply her title. But two weeks out from the annual games – a brutal arena battle in which prisoners fight for their lives – disaster strikes, and Adira is sent hurtling down a path she would have never thought possible.
Will the ensuing chaos push Adira closer to her goals of healing Nedrath? Or will she be forced to become the thing she hates most? A cold-hearted ruler.
With infected lurking outside the towering wall and corruption infiltrating the very halls Adira roams, loyalties will be tested, hearts will be broken, and rebellion will begin.
I was so lucky to receive this book as an ARC. I loved everything about it, from the characters, to the action, to the romance. The characters within this book you grow to love. By the end of the book I felt like I knew all of them in real life and had a second family. The romance was so amazing in this book. Our male main character (Kane) is a “I will kill anyone who touches you” and “I will burn the world down for you” type of character, which I absolutely love. He cares so much for Adira and it makes their romance so cute to read. There are a few spicy scenes within the book, but they do not take up a large amount of the book! If you are looking for an action packed book that will have your heart racing, with a swoon worthy romance, this is your book! I will definitely be looking for more of this authors work in the future! I HIGHLY recommend getting a copy once it is released!
I was lucky enough to recieve an arc for this book and let me tell you it was phenomenal. I couldn’t put it down, I was hooked from page 1. I read it in the space of a day. I loved everything about this book. I loved the characters, the politics, the world, the romance. The romance was perfectly timed, they had so much tension and I just devoured every minute of it. I really enjoyed J Challis’ writing, it was addictive (I highlighted so many amazing quotes). I couldn’t recommend this book enough.
Wow, this story totally blew me away. This story is set several hundred of years in the future after civilization as we know it falls. While is a dystopian romance it definitely felt like an epic fantasy without magic and magic creatures. I was hooked from the first chapter until the last. I finished this book in a little over two days and I'm definitely not the fastest reader. Hands down one of my top reads so far this year.
This standalone absolutely sucked me in and I couldn’t put it down. I stayed up well and truly past my bed time absolutely invested in this book. It was beyond my expectation and it was so good to see how much the author has grown. We get a conclusion YES QUEEN! But it also leaves it available for more books.
Our FMC Adira is a princess who has a curiosity towards her life inside the walled world she calls home and what lies beyond. Rebelling in small ways and seeing things differently to her parents who are more king and queen than parents. With a curiosity of what are the infected, what are the secrets of Nedrath. With corruption and chaos will the rebellion rise? Can she really be part of what she has been told her life, A game of slaughter, a princess who sees it for what it is. A new Guard called Kane who makes her question everything and her feelings. He seems to rebel in the smallest ways, she feels this strong connection to him. But is he really there for her? Will he really protect her at all costs. So what are you doing? Go out and read this book.
I loved the flow with the twists and turns. You would think oh shit this is the end then BAM more adventures to go.
Little pops of spice in there too which were a great addition.
I highly recommend this book, it was interesting and sucked me in. It was easy to follow and the imagery was done in a way it could be followed with ease. The twists and turns also kept you on seat wanting to keep reading.
5 ⭐️
I can’t wait for more from J Challis.
I was provided ARC copy for my honest and totally awesome opinion.
*ARC review* A Game of Rebellion is a wonderful read with an overall thrilling and well-considered plot. The characters were absolutely amazing, both main and secondary. Everyone seemed so unique and a lot of time was clearly spent on planning out the future of every single character and in building their backstory up. I also love the subtle ways these backstories were constructed to explain the behaviours of some characters when they were sometimes questionable. The actions of characters and their reactions to certain events certainly seemed plausible, which I very much appreciated. The story and main concepts reminded me of so many of my favourite books, but it also stayed unique and had its own little quirks that made it stand out. There was a clear direction sustained throughout the book that made it engaging and kept my attention. The drama was held and controlled, and there was also enough tension that kept the stakes raised. The pace of the story was nice and in all had a very nice flow to it (though there were some parts, like the beginning few chapters) where things were just that slightest bit too slow and it kind of took a little to warm up to the story. I do wish we had dived right into the action straightaway, but overall, the story does work as it is and is certainly not a reason to not read the book for. I do think at some points that the spicier scenes seemed a little forced or just awkwardly paced, like too many were tried to fit in. The scenes are written brilliantly, and I can't fault them at all there (they are actually some of my favourite spicy scenes I have read before), but they did seem to be more for the spice and less for the emotional connection at times, which, in the thick of the action, just made me feel a little unsettled with them. One thing I do have to say is that the editing of the book had quite a few mistakes and many sentences did not follow basic sentence structure rules. It still worked fine, but it did make it a little hard to get really invested in the book at stages. Overall, this book is a nice read. It reminded me that I don't read very many fantasy standalones but convinced me to definitely do so in the future. I think this book will be enjoyed by many and is certainly worth taking a chance on! I would be interested in reading more works by this author in the future, as I believe they have great potential. They have clear story-telling abilities and a creative imagination that they know how to wield.
Why "A Game of Rebellion" by J. Challis Will Be Your Next Favourite Read.
Okay, so I had the privilege of beta reading "A Game of Rebellion" for J. Challis, and let me tell you, it was an absolute ride from start to finish. Right off the bat, the world building hooked me. Not too much to drown in details, but just enough to make you feel like you're living there.
And the history? Woven into the story so smoothly, I didn't even realize I was learning about this whole new world while being entertained.
Now, let's talk about characters and dialogue because, wow! I loved them! The characters are so real and lovable; you end up cheering for them, crying, getting mad at them, and crushing on the MMC. Caption Kane Braxton, people, Captain Kane Braxton 😍
Pacing-wise, it's like the book knows just when to give you a breather and when to pull you into the fast lane. It's medium-paced, which is perfect for soaking in the world and the action without feeling rushed.
Long story short, "A Game of Rebellion" is amazing. It's got heart, it's got action, love, spice, chemistry, and it's got characters that stick with you long after you close the book.
If you're into stories that keep you hooked and make you feel all the feels, you've gotta check this one out. J. Challis seriously knocked it out of the park!!
A Game of Rebellion is telling a story about Adira and Kane in a dystopian Nedrath. The storyline kept me hooked from the first page and I couldn’t put the book down.
The world building was done really well. Both the world and characters were interesting and well written.
The book is told in two pov, princess Adira and Kane. Both main characters were strong, independent and intelligent. I loved their banter and chemistry. The supporting characters were also well introduced and they helped to move the story forward.
The plot and annual games reminded me of the Hunger Games.
The pacing of the book was good, there was always something happening but things weren’t moving too fast.
I really enjoyed the book.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
A Game of Rebellion is a book that grabs you right from the start. The writing is smooth and flows perfectly, making it a pleasure to read. It feels familiar at first, but just when you think you know where the story is going, it surprises you with unexpected twists.
The characters are wonderfully developed, and it’s easy to enjoy every one of them. I’m especially in love with Kane—he’s the perfect mix of red and green flags.
The story is about a girl who just wants to be loved and chosen for who she is. She’s determined to make a difference and refuses to just follow tradition or bend herself to the expectations that have been placed on her since birth.
Overall, this book is fast-paced, well thought out, and a real pleasure to read. If you’re looking for something with Hunger Games vibes, this is for you!
I have to start by saying I absolutely LOVED and DEVOURED this book. Kane and Adira are my favorite characters ever. The way he adores Adira is so admiring. Kane is the "if you touch her I'll kill you" kind of guy. And the romance is to die for. I really grew to love these characters like they were real people. I loved everything about them. The story had an amazing plot, wonderful character development, the perfect balance of plot and romance, and it never felt like the story just dragged and hung on to one thing. If you want a good romance that allows you to be sucked in then this book will do it for you. I was so very lucky to get this book as an ARC read for free and I can't wait to get a physical copy of this. I am leaving this review freely and honestly. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK
J Challis has done it again 🏆🎉 Could not put this down until I was finished! This book has everything I love and more in a book.
I can tell you it 100% did not go in the direction I thought it would after the first few chapters. It was so much better than I could have ever imagined.
As an author, J Challis has taken this story and perfectly woven it to keep me captivated. I had to remind myself to take a breath a couple of times.
The amazing descriptions of the characters and locations made it easy to imagine it in my mind as I read along.
I hate spoilers in reviews, so I won't leave any.... but OMG, the spice is at a perfect temperature. 🌶🌶
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I had moments where I needed to put the book down to process what I read, but then was torn as I wanted to keep reading without processing. I squealed like a little girl at times and just so excited when information was revealed. I loved that their was growth amongst the characters and that when someone was wrong, they owned it and admitted to that fact. After reading this book, I was able to see how the behaviours of the characters had deeper meanings than just simply being their personalities. It is clear that J.Challis put so much thought in the plot and the characters.
A Game of Rebellion will be one of my top 5 of 2024!
I couldn't not put this down, it was so addictive,
I haven't read a book in so long where I loved every. Single. Character. They all were perfect. It was so well written, there was never a dull moment, it was truely captivating.
THE PLOT TWIST! Excuses me Challis but we need some words and I need some therapy.
I've said this once and I'll say it again, watch this space. Challis is going places!
This was a fast paced book that will keep your attention from the very start. Between the spice, amazing descriptions of the world and characters and the plot, I never wanted the book to end.
This book was fantastic. Grips you from the start, tugs on your heart, brings tears, anger and smiles. I could barely put this book down. Looking forward to many more.
This book was really good, if you like a strong FMC, a super sweet love story, and people fighting for justice then this book could be for you. This book made me giggle so many times. Definitely recommend!
