Emma Child knows how to get her reader's attention as wells as any one writing educational books for children. Her previous books on SHARKS and SNAKES and DINOSAURS and HORSES were big successes, so now she addresses DOLPHINS. She faces the reader head on with facts, challenges the reader to see the whole picture, and ends up creating a fascination about her topic complete with diagrams and photographs. For example, on writing a book about an animal that has entertained most everyone in aquariums or at seaside or out on the ocean, she begins her book as follows: `These fun-loving, friendly sea creatures are some of the smartest animals in the world. They're also easy to train, fun to watch, and super-cute on top of it.'
In this excellent book, aided by superb photography, she delves into the anatomy of dolphins, explains why their bodies are slippery, explains their tail ins are called flukes, have curved mouths that look like they're smiling, and have blowholes on top of their beads for breathing. She describes how dolphins live around the world, migrating from place to place each year to obtain the food that they need. The strange blowholes are explained - dolphins are mammals and need air to breathe instead of other aquatic animals who depend on gills to gather oxygen from the water. They can stage submerged for 30 minutes and then must surface to breathe. They feed on fish and squid and are hunters.
She then delves into the concept of Echo-Location - the manner in which dolphins seek out prey, even though they can indeed see and hear also. They chat among themselves, gather in groups called pods. Child then offers the life cycle from inception to birth in a series of fine photographs of dolphins in utero (for one year!), and at play. And why are they so smart? Child gives an excellent explanation about their brains and their memories. She then takes us through images and information about the different types of dolphins - and there are many. A long list of facts about dolphin characteristics is like reading a Ripley's Believe it or Not! After spending time with Emma Child's book we truly understand the world of dolphins.
This author has done a great job in putting together information about the animals which share our earth. When you look at the pictures, often small, just remember to double click on them and they balloon in size. Dolphins are amazing sea creatures. They move quickly, are talented, often they are clowns, and they can athletically jump above the ocean 20 feet. They come in many varieties and sizes, have smooth, slippery bodies, unlike fish that have scales. Why? Because dolphins are mammals, just like humans. The longest they can stay underwater is 30 minutes, then they must rise to the surface to take in air through their blow-hole on top of their head. Most dolphins live in the sea, but some live in fresh water areas such as the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. They are very friendly with humans and sometimes when a human is in trouble in the sea, a dolphin will save them by pushing them to a beach -- they are that smart and caring to save a life. Parents and children will love this guide which talented Emma Child has created. All her books are geared for young children, but there are things in each one that adults will be amazed to learn. Highly recommend the entire series!
This book has some pretty photographs, as Emma's tend to but some of the pictures were grainy. I would've liked to see better quality.
As for the facts presented: Lots of good facts, such as some of their anatomy and abilities and habits. For example it does discuss how social dolphins are and it does show us some of the different, and lesser known species which is great.
What I would've liked to see: -While the book touches on some of the lesser know dolphins, it leaves out the fact that they are so drastically endangered. Some of the species visited here have just under 100 left in the wild - but this fact was not mentioned. -I also did not like that it showed dolphins in captivity and mentioned them performing at zoos and parks without pointing out the horror that they endure to get to said establishments. So many are slaughtered needlessly for this purpose while others are ripped away from their families to be dropped into captivity . The book does discuss how family oriented they are in other sections - I only hope readers will put it all together.
The book did mention the severity of the Maui dolphin's endangered status; I do appreciate that.
Like the other books in the series by this author, every care has been taken to make the facts easy and fun for the younger reader (and adults). Add the great colour photos (in most cases 4 at the start of each chapter) and you have a book anyone who likes Dolphins will enjoy. Other books in the series cover Sharks, Snakes, Horses and Dinosaurs.
Dolphins: Fun Facts & Amazing Photos of Animals in Nature is a great addition to the science library books in our preschool classroom. The pictures are beautiful and the captions give information that is interesting to our preschool class. This year we have several children who are very interested in dolphins, so when I added this book to the science center we received many request for it to be read to the children. They also enjoy pretend reading it and looking at the pictures.
I've really grown to love Emma Child's animal books with each succeeding entry I Read. As always this DOLPHINS title is full of interesting facts and photos about one of everybody's favorite water creatures. Facts that are not generally known to most readers.
I liked this one, the small cjild inside me delighted in the way it's all presented.
I have read several of the amazing animals' books written by this author. Who can resist looking at the face of a dolphin? Child begins by describing the general features of dolphins like smooth skin and bottlenoses and then goes on to explain there are many variations. I had never heard of the dalmatian dolphin and was surprised to learn that dolphins migrate each year. Child’s discussion of the way dolphins communicate by echolocation and a whistle sound that is unique to each dolphin is fascinating. I learned that dolphins use sea sponges to protect their mouths from spiny fish and that some dolphins have more than one hundred teeth. Children will be surprised to learn that dolphins live in families like theirs and that they delight in playing with each other. The Dolphins’ intelligence level is second only to that of a human and they are good problem solvers. This book is informative and a great research tool for children in the elementary grades. Only one thing disappointed me. The photos on the Kindle can be enlarged by double-clicking, but this was not simple to do and once enlarged some of the photos looked blurry. Recommended for dolphin lovers everywhere regardless of age.
E-book version features full color photos of various dolphins and fun facts on each page. Concise and easy to read, (adults may need to read to younger children), and as an adult I enjoyed learning a few dolphin facts myself.
So the Killer Whale is just a big dolphin? Really?
Even though the books in this series are short, it takes me a long time to get through each one because I can't stop looking at the incredible pictures. In this book, the one that really stunned me was the unborn dolphin shown inside his (or her) Mom's womb. I have never seen anything like it before. The picture which demonstrates the size of a dolphin brain compared to humans and to other animals certainly explains a lot.
Of course, dolphins are some of the most fascinating animals because of their adorable looks and their intelligence and personality. I THOUGHT I knew a bit about them, but I learned some things in this book. I knew that there are different types of dolphins and that there are even some fresh-water dolphin, but I never realized that there are so many variations and that they live in such diverse environments. I suppose that their intelligence enables them to adapt to such a wide range of climates and conditions.
I love this series and cannot imagine any child who wouldn't. They are well-written and well researched and the photographs are outstanding.
