When Kent was 14 and Toby was 39, Toby realizes they're mates and leaves his pack and doesn't see any of them again for 8 years, to avoid "influencing" Kent. He has some bad childhood memories of a young girl being influenced by an older mate and he's trying to avoid that.

The alpha calls Toby back home. Kent comes home from college and immediately senses that Toby is his mate. Kent is angry and feels abandoned, and rejects Toby. Kent basically feels like Toby is making all the decisions (whether they're a couple or not, whether they are even living in the same state or not), and he doesn't agree that Toby can just show up now and declare that it's time to be mates. I agree with Kent. Toby wasn't even planning on telling him yet. He had to because the alpha forced him to come home, and there was no way to hide from Kent at that point. I don't know what he was waiting for, honestly. They will always have a huge age gap. Waiting isn't going to narrow the age gap.

Kent's parents are more concerned with maintaining their friendship with Toby than being supportive of their son. The dad never has any kind of talk with Kent. The mom does, and just tells Kent they don't love him as much as his mate does, so he probably shouldn't reject his mate. Ouch. That was a terrible thing for a mother to say. WTF is wrong with these people??

So basically they are forced to work together and forced to be around each other outside of work because Toby is friends with Kent's parents. So they get together, because what the hell else are they supposed to do. It was inevitable and kind of depressing.
