Amos Garr is in the trucking business, just another working stiff with a wife and a son, by all appearances successful and a fairly likeable guy, if a loner. If you met him on the street you’d likely forget him minutes later. He is unremarkable. But when sleep claims him, the story is different. He fights for the Light, venturing bravely into the Darkness to carry the battle and serve in Michael’s army. He is a noteworthy assassin when occasion demands, and is known and feared in the Otherworld where he does his best work. This is his journal, the journal of a Greywalker, one who did not volunteer, but one who serves and the price he pays for his service. Follow him into the frightening world that lies beyond the waking mind. Go with him into the Darkness.
**I received a free copy of this ebook from the author in exchange for my fair and honest review.**
“Greywalker” by Patrick Heffernan is a tremendous journey into otherworldly realms while balancing a life in this world. The main character, Amos Garr, leaps off the page from the first lines. He is an extremely likeable character, full of depth and wise (albeit sarcastic) perceptions about the world around him. He leads a double life as a Greywalker, one who walks between the Light and the Dark of the heavenly realm. Amos serves the Light, and often nightly battles demonic forces on behalf of the Light.
As Amos grows and develops, there is a real sense of companionship with the character as the reader joins him on his adventures. He’s flawed, makes mistakes, and does his best to do good in everything. He’s filled with an incredible sense of justice that one doesn’t see in too many characters in books today, but that also doesn’t make him perfect. Here on Earth, he works hard at his job and does his best as a husband and father, while dealing with the crap that ordinary life throws at him.
There is plenty of action, adventure, fantasy, and love to go around. Though it is a chronicle of Amos’s life, the book has nothing slow or uninteresting about it. The book will stay with you, and I’m sure that for years to come I’ll be heard occasionally spouting out some of Amos’s nuggets of wisdom.
This is a diary of Amos Garr. A Greywalker. A Greywalker can walk in a spirit world, which can be a bit of nerve wrecking. Well, especially when they can visit the Otherworld just as normal people visits the mall, and wandering in the middle of demonic creatures truly can drive one insane. They don’t choose their own destiny as they are chosen to walk the path and serve as soldiers of light. No matter how hard their journey might be the reward is well worth it. As in the end we are all nothing but the servants.
Loved the writing style, the dry humor and the references of a real life. However, this story does not suit for everyone. You need to be quite open-minded with it, as the author plays with the biblical aspects really freely, turning things upside down and skillfully creating an imaginary world where the normal laws and beliefs does not apply. So you see, in order to get the most out of this story, you simply cannot get into the story by being straight-laced.
Greywalker catches you unawares. I’m not sure what I expected of the book, but it certainly wasn’t the gamut of emotions that surfaced in me. The character was so well written that I felt every emotion he did-happiness, sadness, confusion and anger. I found the concept of the Greywalkers fascinating. Amos’ initiation into the Otherworld and his journey through it is woven so well. Being a Greywalker demands much from a mortal. Amos' feelings about being thrown into something he hadn't asked for and didn't want, and his later realization of his destiny and place in this world is captivating.
One of the best parts of the book for me was the way Patrick Heffernan has explored the relationships in Amos’ life, from his initial confusion and anger at his father, to acceptance and forgiveness, and his own reactions to his son’s gifts. A brilliant piece of work by a fine author! It was a wonderful experience.
