The critically acclaimed post apocalyptic saga continues...
With Boston collapsing faster than Alex Fletcher predicted, his personal rescue mission deep into the heart of an increasingly unfamiliar city reaches a critical point. Pursued by a ruthless militia group and forced to navigate a treacherous landscape, he runs a gauntlet of grim decisions and impossible odds to reach perceived safety. Perceived because nothing is safe in the world emerging after the "event."
In Maine, the consequences of a random, deadly encounter has left Kate Fletcher and her travel companions in a state of perpetual fear. Finally reaching the Fletcher's western Maine retreat, they prepare for the worst--not truly understanding the threat conspiring against them.
A series of lethal coincidences fuels a local militia leader's ghastly strategy to raise a private army, planting the Fletcher's firmly at the intersection of his power play--and the epicenter of his rage.
The human darkness released on August 19, 2019 continues to grow, threatening to tear the fabric of their fragile society apart...until nothing remains but a distant memory of the past.

While I love this author other books I have read by him, and while this book kept me interested, I have to say that sadly this book suffered from "middle book syndrome" for me. It is book #2 in a trilogy of books on an apocalyptic event, and for me this book ended up just being "filler". There was not a lot of progress or character development, and most of the story was devoted to two very large gun battles, and to detailed descriptions of guns, ammo, and carnage. As an example of what I mean, here is a paragraph from 50% of the way through the book:
"Alex depressed the trigger before the Liberty Boys added a M24OG machine gun to their arsenal. The gun rattled the turret mount, ejecting shells downward into the cabin, but stayed lined up on the tightly packed group of insurgents. The first extended burst punched more than thirty 7.62mm bullets through the group, at a devastating range of fifty yards, detonating a dense cloud of red mist over the HESCO barrier. The second burst shredded the remaining upright bodies, splattering the pavement with bloody entrails, chunks of flesh and skull matter."
Details of guns, details of ammo, details of carnage. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I am looking forward to reading the third and final book in this series though. I want to see how things end, I want to find out WHAT caused this event, this Perseid Collapse, as we still have not been told exactly what caused this event that unleashed this devastation on the USA. I'm just not sure that book #2 was needed, unless someone wants to compare all of these types of guns and ammo as described, and compare the carnage and devastation to bodies that they cause when used. Me, I prefer more plot development.
Picking up where The Perseid Collapse ended, Event Horizon throws it's readers immediately into the fray. We learn about Alex Fletcher's son, Ryan, and what he did during the beginning of this disaster, but we are soon flipping back and forth between Alex and his main goal of getting to his son and his son's girlfriend Chloe, Alex's wife Kate and their family and neighbors who are fortifying the Fletcher's "safe house" and the militia, calling themselves The Liberty Boys, that is doing all they can to take control of the situation...and not in a good way.
I was very much looking forward to the release of Event Horizon and while I hated the wait, I was not left disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment of this book. I may not have always agreed with tactics used in certain situations, but that is what I enjoy about this series. It takes a hard look at decisions that must be made in order to survive in a WROL (Without Rule of Law). Right or wrong decisions must be made. Ok, yes, the Fletcher's are what most of society would call "preppers" and they are for all intents and purposes pretty well stocked. Some readers may see them as, too well prepared, but let's face it. There are some people out there who will do just fine surviving should a WROL event happen and they must tap into their supplies, so why it is so far fetched that our main protagonist is prepared to care for his family? Sure some people's opinion are to be scoffed at and told they are crazy, but who's the first person you're going to run to for help or, if you're one of those, to steal from? Yep! Maybe those people should start stocking up on their own.
Eventually, after quite a battle to get home, the Fletcher's et al are reunited, but, of course, this cannot be the end to their hardship. All that hard work on the safe house that Kate and the rest of the crew worked on? Yeah, that has to be tested as does the patience and endurance of many of the members of our group. Will anyone get hurt? Die? Will Eli and his Liberty Boys succeed in getting revenge on the Fletcher's and taking over their home? The only way you'll ever know is hop over and grab yourself a copy of Event Horizon.
If there is any question at all of my opinion of this book let me say just this. GO! BUY! READ! and then thank me for forcing you into buying it and thank the author by leaving a review yourself.
I crashed into this one from the first, as basically it's a seamless story and the parts don't stand alone at all. Alex is fighting his way out of Boston and runs into an old marine friend, now commanding his own battalion. By agreeing to help, Alex gets his rescue team a safe escort back to the compound where the rest of the family are waiting. Reunited, they have to face a full out assault by some very p***** off local boys. The Alamo is an apt analogy. I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the first, but it's pretty non-stop military action and certainly kept me reading. I'm now on the third and final episode Point of Crisis, as again, this one just stops abruptly and you are pretty much forced to read on for a decent conclusion.
I had read the previous book in this series some time ago so it took me a while to get the characters sorted in my mind, and I had forgotten a lot of the details of their interrelationships. The author waded right in to the story which would make it difficult for someone who had not read the previous book. Mr. Konkoly is quite knowledgeable about military language and uses it without explanation throughout the book but it can be figured out well enough. He does not spend a lot of time instructing readers on how to prepare for the Apocalypse which can be boring and perhaps most of the book describes conflict from skirmishes to full battles. I will probably get "Point of Crisis", the next book in the series and read that in a couple of weeks so I don't have to relearn who all the characters are.
Solid follow up to the first book in the series. With the characters being established in the first book, this book gives a better story without having to labor through the original building that slowed the first book down. Action from beginning to end keeps the flow well. Alex fletcher makes a compelling character and eli Russell a persistent thorn in his side. This book finishes with a solid stopping point unlike book 1. Solid 4 stars
Steven Konkoly is AMAZING!! The Alex Fletcher series ensnared me with the very first one, The Jakarta Pandemic. I really want a neighbor like Alex; maybe I’d think he was a little crazy, but maybe I’d take his advice and I’d definitely want his protection. I’d probably be much further ahead on my TBR if Konkoly hadn’t written such good books that I felt the need to go back to them time and time again.
Well I don't agree with the author about how quickly people will devolve, and I think the Fletcher family is a bit too trigger happy, I still enjoyed this book. I feel the author did a great job leading the characters through the events in a way that is consistent with the world that was built in. And the climax of the book was very well written.
I enjoyed this one better. It has a wider variety of characters and more planning of operations. Of course it ends with a to-be-continued. So on to number 3.
I previously read and enjoyed The Jakarta Pandemic (the prequel to the Perseid Collapse series). I found myself joining Mr. Konkoly's newsletter/fan club. In exchange he gifted me (and I'm sure others) this story. The opinions expressed below are in no way influenced by this and are my honest thoughts.
This is book is a mixture of military and post-apocalypse
Alex Fletcher, U.S. Marine veteran, set out to get his son from Boston and bring him home. This was a difficult task considering the chaos that ensued after the event that has left America without electricity and minimal working vehicles. Nevertheless he is driven to succeed (at any and all cost) at bringing his boy home alive. Will father and son reunite? If they do what is in store for them and the rest of Alex's family?
I enjoyed this story so much it was hard to put down to do the things I had to do. Having read the previous two books in this series, I had already gotten to know the main characters. I truly believe Mr. Konkoly does a great job of sharing the thoughts and reasons behind the decisions that they make. Overall the characters believe that family comes first and must be protected at all cost.
Warning: This book is for Mature Audiences due to graphic violence, adult language, and a hint of sexual situations.
This book wraps up the first two nicely. The way the author slowly shows fletchers experience in the marines makes what he does more believable. The antagonist however is a tiny bit far fetched. Especially the amount of people he can recruit mere moments after a savage killing. All in all this is a fun series. I will read the next one. Would like to see if Alex’s luck continues or if he just turns complete badasss
I've said it before and I'll say it again. This series just keeps getting better. I even believe the author is hitting his stride as the writing keeps getting better with each book.
It has everything... terrific characters, great action, and the ambush scene at the end is heart-stopping.
Event Horizon is the second book in the Perseid Collapse series. I've read other books by this author, including the first book in the series, and was looking forward to reading this book. This story is violent and not for sensitive readers. While you can read this as a standalone, I don't recommend that as you will be confused with what is going on. Not only does Event Horizon start right where Perseid Collapse ended, it also ends in a cliffhanger for the next book.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat all of that info here. The author did a good job of summarizing the first book for new readers to give them a better understanding of the main characters and settings in the series. The series has well developed characters. There is a lot going on that keeps you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next. While the first book and storyline kept me riveted, this one did not until the last few chapters.
The story starts out with fast paced action and that continues throughout the book. It is amazing how much story, details, and action the author packs into the book...and that most of this book takes place over just a few hours. Along the way there are some unexpected surprises as well. The Perseid Collapse is a series definitely worth reading. And I will read the next book.
Event Horizon picks up exactly where book one, The Perseid Collapse, ended. As with book 1, this book spends too much time at planning what should happen instead of allowing the story to be told; almost repetitive in places which seems to bog the story down. The ending is somewhat complete as the battle at Alex Father's farm concludes against the local militia (more of a street gang - its leader reminds me of Neegan in the Walking Dead TV series) and doesn't just end in a major cliff-hanger. However, I wouldn't recommend that readers read this without having read book one in the series. Readers also discover that the US military in the area is led by Alex's former commander in Iraq, and as a condition of helping Alex rescue the kids from the college, he has to accept reactivation at his former rank of Captain. True to his word, the military unit assists during the rescue of the kids and at the farm battle - Now Alex must return the favor and take over a military battalion in a different state; a mission that will be covered in the next book. I am taking a break from this series and haven't decided yet if I'll return. I would like to see how the series ends and might have to bite the bullet down the road.
Best book in series yet!! So completely enjoyable in every way. Non-stop action from start to finish. Steven Konkoly is one of the top fiction writers out there today, and not just in the apocalypse genre.
The scenes within this story are so rich in depth and detail, you feel like you are there. It’s all so real, sometimes you’re glad you’re NOT there! It’s extremely easy to become totally immersed in the story.
The characters remain wonderfully believable and diverse. Some lovable, strong, annoying, quirky, strong in character, mind and body, and others equally weak, and those that are just pure bad to the bone. (That’s a corny saying, huh? “Evil” is going too far, though.)
I adore the marines. All of them. The dialogue and mannerisms. Konkoly’s experience and expertise really shines through here, lending an authenticity to the story that truly enhances. Often with humor.
I could go on. There’s always so much positive I can say about Konkoly’s work - and this series in particular. This book especially has been a fantastic read! I can’t wait to find out what’s in store for Alex and crew next.....
Now that I've finished the tale started in the first book, it's clear that the author is creating an ex-military one-man army along the lines of Jack Ryan or Jack Reacher. This book has less gore than the first one, but still plenty of violence as the hero and his band fight their way back to Maine. The weapons lists and home defense lists are still pretty long, but they don't bog the book down as badly as the first one. There is more closure at the end of this book, but major threats are still on the horizon. There continues to be a significant indictment of local militias and how, whether they are well-intentioned or basically criminal, they can lead to far more bloodshed than if the established authorities handled things. Given my growing awareness of how many people think our own government is "coming for us," it's a disconcerting read these days.
Again, a great story line, but TMI for me! I have no interest in the Weaponry! All I need to know is who is shooting at who, & why, WHEN it's necessary for the storyline! It does bother me that taking a life is so routine! And this isn't just one life! At one fight 29 people were killed! BY THE GOOD GUYS!! I also don't care for the profanity laden dialogue! A counselor once told my son that only people with very limited vocabularies resorted to profanity! That said, the storyline is interesting, adventurous, thrilling, even funny & a bit scary at times! It is enough on it's own without needing this other crap! I recommend this book if you don't mind the extra stuff, or if you can substitute a non-profane word, which I do. If I hadn't become invested in Alex, his family, & their neighbors, I might not have continued, but dang it! I did!
Brilliantly written, vividly portrayed and gets the heart rate going better than a 4K run (and I don’t do 4K runs!). Some old characters and a few newbies, all are very well rounded and easy to empathise with or despise. My sleeping pattern is completely destroyed thanks to this abhorrent novel 😜! I couldn’t put the darn thing down!! From the moment my eyes scanned the first line I was completely hooked. It’s not often a post apocalyptic novel fits perfectly in the sliver of a crack between overdone and under stimulating, but this book completely fills that slight gap. I didn’t even have a single eye roll moment. Definitely a highly recommended book for any post apocalyptic fan.
Waco was bad enough But this experience is worse. It's really scary to think there are so many nutjobs out there who feel they owe nothing to anybody else but themselves. Why don't you start reading this story that begins with the tragedy of the tsunami You can't put it down. You could say it's unbelievable but history has shown that there are too many of the psychopath out there who know how to manipulate and I have no guilt about just killing anyone for the sake of killing. This is definitely a thriller And Makes you think of how easy some people can be Manipulated into doing someone else's bitting because somebody knows how to speak BS
There are way too many gun descriptions and military designations in this series for my taste. That said, this was an action-packed entry in the series detailing Alex Fletcher’s actions in and journey out of Boston with his son, his neighbor and the neighbor’s daughter, followed by their marine-assisted trip back to his family in Maine, and then by defense of the place where his family and his neighbors have congregated. I have mixed feelings about being cognizant of the plans of the militia leader. Luckily, the marines are on the Fletchers’ side. Still, their not safe even at the end of this novel.
Steven Konkoly continues to excel with The Perseid Collapse, #2 Event Horizon. The action just keeps on running, making you feel as though you were there for every thrilling minute of action. He deftly paints the drama making you feel as though you had personally experienced every riveting minute of the plot. Konkoly has that rare ability to weave the action sequences flawlessly, keeping everything grounded in the realm of plausibility. If you haven't experienced Konkoly's works, shame on you. Get his books and get hooked on his prose today.
One of the best SHTF novels ever written. The dad, who is the main character, is the perfect ex-Marine and the perfect husband and father, a Special Ops veteran who gets it done. He is also SUPER PREPPER.
His family, his neighbors and their families must manage to rescue two college students and their young children still at home, and make it to safety. Once I opened it, I could not put it down.
If you get this book, order the next one In the series at the same time. I’ve only had it for a day, and I finished it. I don’t know how I can stand to wait to get #2 in the series!
Alex and his friends along with the Marines have rescued their college children from Boston. Alex is put in charge of the Maine National Guard as Intel \consultant for Maine, which is to become a RRZ (Regional Recovery Zone). That is if they survive the Maine Liberty Militia attack.
Great reading with attention grabber about possible down to Earth futuristic scenarios. Full suspense and action.
Still liking the series after the second novel. Excellent implementation of a 'villian' and the author does a great job of making you hate them. Feels like the novel is slowly losing realism points and military actions seem far fetched. It's a bit predictable and much more goes in the main characters favor than would ever really occur... but it sure is an entertaining read. Tough to fathom what it would be like in big cities during such an event.
Dialogue was more contrived in this one. Especially when he continued the scene in the dorm room, the main character early on in the book had a very immature way of speaking when talking to the dorm kids. It just seemed unrealistic.
Further, I felt like the some parts were poorly drafted. I found it difficult to imagine both the layout of the buildings and the fight scenes. It was as if he skipped parts.
Event Horizon: A Post-Apocalypse Survival Thriller (The Perseid Collapse Series Book 2)
The second book contains a lot of military and technical military terms. It took me back to my military days. Fight scenes were great and quite realistic. Great story, finding the children , reaction of the non-combatants was realistic.
The characters are everyday people some with military training but for the most part your next door neighbor. People protecting their families, in a troubled time. I would recommend this series to anyone who is interested in reading a thriller with a touch of military action involved.
Action-packed book that keeps you engaged, and definitely not for the faint of heart. I would not suggest reading this one as a standalone book. It picks up immediately where the previous book left off. It was neat to hear more from Ryan's (Alex's son's) perspective. Another cliffhanger - good thing I have the box set!
Not since reading the saga of the Courtney's when a teenager have I enjoyed such a fast paced, exciting story, I felt like a member of Alexs' group, being taken from one tight situation to another, great read, just finished book 5 , I've not been engrossed in a story like that for years, hopefully there's more to come from Alex and his extended family
In this book, we find out that, amidst the uncertainty of what really happened (lack of info from the governments), all kinds of militia groups come out of the woodwork, most of them with bad intentions. Alex Fletcher, his family and friends are targeted by one specific group and things turn out pretty nasty.
