Broken Hearted Ghoul

Rate this book
It's been two years since Skye Mertz agreed to drive Abe's Taxi for the Dead, transporting his zombie workers back to the man who gave them an additional twenty years of life. She's raising her daughter, with the help of her ghostly mother-in-law, and keeps looking for what killed her husband the night she died.

Now she has a partner - a housewife working off her zombie husband's service - and she's met a sorcerer with amnesia. It shouldn't be surprising that a broken hearted ghoul, bent on getting revenge, should show up too. After all, there's no rest for the dead.

After a car wreck that killed her husband and a just waiting to die prognosis, a Nashville Police Officer Skye Mertz accepts an offer from Abraham Lincoln Jones to get another twenty years of her life as a zombie so she can be with her daughter. She also suspects her husband's death was not an accident.

Her mother-in-law died from cancer but returned as a ghost to help her take care of the kid and to be annoying and disapproving pain in the ass. The hostility and nasty comments are beyond annoying.

Anyway, Skye's job should be easy enough. She picks up the zombies whose time is up and drives them back to Abe. Some of them come without any problems, some don't but overall it's not a hard job. She gets a partner whose husband died on duty. Debbie is working for Abe because he gave her husband those twenty years.

The real problems begin when something starts killing Abe's zombies and soon Skye has to find the killer before her daughter is in even greater danger.
Then a sorcerer with amnesia pops out of nowhere telling her that they are connected somehow. He drove me crazy with 'lady Skye this, Lady Kate that'. If it were consistent in every situation, it wouldn't be as annoying. Maybe.

The zombies in this world just share the name with the usual ones. They are just people who came back from the dead without any side effects (no brain cravings, shuffling, moaning and so on). If they drank blood, they would be vampires.

The main story is the zombie killings, but there are more storylines that are left unresolved and possibly left for future books. How exactly did her husband Jacob die, who exactly is Lucas the sorcerer, what is going on with her partner's husband Terry and the matter of Skye's origin are all pretty interesting questions.

The female characters are caricatures: a tough former police officer with a good heart, an obnoxious mother-in-law who doesn't waste any opportunity to say something bad to Skye, a perfect, beautiful, but naive partner who blames herself when someone tries to seduce her (asking what she has done wrong so men act that way).

Broken Hearted Ghoul by Jim and Joyce Levene is a 2014 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Two years ago Skye and her husband Jacob were killed in an accident. Skye made a deal with Abe so that she could see her daughter, Kate, to adulthood. So now Skye is a zombie with 18 more years left to live. She also has to drive the death taxi for Abe. When a zombie's 20 years are up, Skye must pick them up and return them to Abe. This is not the easiest job in the world because some zombies refuse to go quietly into the night. To complicate matters, Skye now has a partner named Debbie who has taken on her zombie husband's debt to Abe. Two other issues that Skye has to deal with are her mother-in-law, Abby, who also happens to be a ghost, and a sorcerer that has lost his memory named Lucus.
When Skye and Debbie sent to make a pick up in the death taxi, they discover the zombie is dead, really dead. This begins a disturbing trend and now all the zombies are in danger of being murdered.
As Skye attempts to figure out what is going on she finds out more about the mysterious Abe and his twenty year bargain he makes with all the zombies which could lead her to a prime suspect. Any future Skye could have with Kate is on the line as she faces a final do or die showdown with the murderer.

This cozy mystery is outside the box for sure. With the popularity of Zombies at this moment in time, this book will appeal to a wider audience than just lovers of cozy mysteries. Now, if you read a lot of cozies, you will know the genre can become a little sugary sweet at times. This cozy is pretty dark compared to the usual fare in the genre. There is no danger of having a sugar rush when reading this one.
The zombies are like humans and have all made a strange bargain with Abe. They can live another twenty years as a zombie if they will work those twenty years to pay off their debt to Abe. For Skye the only reason she made the deal was so her daughter wouldn't be orphaned like she was. So, by the time her twenty years is up, Kate will be an adult and Skye can move on in peace. But, she will not get to see her daughter grow up if the zombie killer isn't eliminated.
I am pretty sure this is a first in the series book, so you may find a few irritating loose ends. Lucas, for one. He apparently has quite a past and is somehow connected to Skye. The last information we get on him sounds a little ominous. So, there are few things that you will have to wait to find out.
I wasn't sure how a cozy mystery with zombies as the main characters would work out. However, I found the book to be entertaining and refreshing in the sense that it's not a cookie cutter cozy which can wear a little thin after awhile. I applaud the authors for excercising their imaginations and coming up with something completely original. Overall this one is an A.

If you're not a huge fan of all the blood, guts and gore that goes along with every Zombie novel (those I've read, anyway) then you will really enjoy this book. The Zombies in this story are nothing like those from The Walking Dead, in fact, you'd never know they were living corpses because they are almost as normal as it they were truly still alive. Although they differ from the living in that they don't sleep, don't get cold, they eat but don't really have to, and they have a 20 year price on their heads.

This story was so unique and refreshing, and it entertained me from start to finish. Skye is a kind of bounty hunter/taxi driver for the living dead, stuck with the job of delivering those whose 20 years is up. I loved the strange concept of the dead being allowed to "live" but at the beck and call of their master. Debbie's case was even stranger and at first I had to wonder why Abe had allowed her to work of her husbands debt, but when the truth came to light I still found it a little strange. It felt like Abe was hiding something about her husband. And, as for said husband, something very weird was going on there. I'm intrigued to find out what is the deal with him. Another unique aspect of this story was Addie. I loved the ghostly meddling mother-in-law and I want to see what more she is capable of.

When the broken hearted ghoul showed up and started wreaking havoc on Abe's Zombie clan, that's when things really got exciting. Abe, for the dark master he seemed was, had quite the soft spot for his old love, and his weakness only complicated his life, as well as Skye's. Of course, chaos ensued as Skye tried to stop a string of Zombie killings, and she soon found out that there are more monstrous things in the world besides her kind. The only thing that really confused me about this book was Lucas. His sudden appearance, his role in this story. It all seemed a bit odd, and it felt like he'd been thrown in as a bit of an after-thought. Even though he served a purpose, it just felt a little convenient, and because the reason for his sudden arrival was never explored more, it felt like it was a loose end.

This was a fun, quick read with interesting characters. Different from the norm and would appeal to a wide audience because it has a little something of everything to offer.

Just when you think that authors Joyce and Jim Lavene couldn't possaibly come up with another original series idea, they bring you The Taxi For The Dead series. This story is as wonderful as the short story, UNDEAD BY MORNING, that introduced the series.

Chapter one of BROKEN HEARTED GHOUL really sets the tone for the pace of the action to follow. I really enjoyed the interaction between protagionist Skye Mertz and her new partner Debbie Hernandez. And I've yet to decide if I'm afraid of Abraham Lincoln Jones. A big part of me tells me I should be, but a small part seems to think he's okay.

With all the interesting characters and twists and turns, this book was a quick and entertaining read.

I won this some time back here on GR and finally got it read. An interesting premise and lots of potential. Calling it 3.5 stars.I'll read the next to see where it goes. This duo writes a series with a ghost as J.J. Cook that I just love, along with another standard cozy series under the same name about a food truck owner. If this series can come up to the level of those 2, it should really take off. If you're looking for something a bit different in the paranormal mystery genre, this series is definitely worth a look.

Broken Hearted Ghoul by Joyce and Jim Lavene
The First Taxi for the Dead Novel

Joyce and Jim Lavene start a new series with Broken Hearted Ghoul. It's a little darker, a little grittier, and quite compelling. Skye Mertz is not your average cozy heroine. She's a former cop and a current zombie. Not the mindless shuffling sort, but a zombie nonetheless. Skye was near death after a horrible car crash which left her husband dead when she was approached by Abe, a zombie master, who gave her an option other than death-work for him and live for 20 more years. Unwilling to see her daughter an orphan she took the deal. Now she raises her daughter, Kate, with the help of her mother-in-law, who happens to be a ghost, and drives a taxi for the dead-picking up fellow zombies whose 20 years are up and returning them to Abe.

Something is not quite right, neither with her perky new partner's family life or her job as zombies are being murdered before their time is up.Then an amnesiac sorcerer appears out of the blue, seeming almost too good to be true. Is he?

I enjoyed this not so cozy cozy. A little darker, showing that life isn't always pleasant. Sometimes you have to make tough choices and buckle down and just do what needs to be done in order to survive. I love the many layered characters-each a mystery unto themselves. Is Addie only cranky because she's dead? Or because of her son's death and the fact that she never approved of Skye? Who exactly is Lucas? A sorcerer from the past? How and why did he come to the present? What is Brandon's story and what the heck is going on in Debbie's house? I can only hope we get to peal back more layers and learn about these multifaceted characters. By the end of the book we've solved the mystery of who was killing Abe's zombies before their time, but the Lavene's leave us with more puzzles.

Joyce and Jim Lavene deliver a pulse pounding paranormal mystery incorporating a unique and varied cast of characters. If you're looking for a cozy that's a little darker and a little different, you've come to the right place in Broken Hearted Ghoul.

Skye Mertz and her husband died in a car accident two years ago. The mysterious Abe turns her in a zombie – in exchange for another 20 years with her daughter, Skye will work for him as his ‘taxi driver for the dead’. She picks up zombies whose 20 years have expired and brings them back to Abe, so they can die their final death. Things get more complicated when somebody starts ‘killing’ off zombies before their time is up.

What I liked:
The book is well written, action packed and entertaining. The main character, her daughter, and Lucas (the amnesiac sorcerer) are likable and funny. Skye’s devotion to her daughter, her fears and hopes, make her seem very human, even for a zombie.
I also liked the world building. It’s a different take on the whole zombie idea. I always enjoy reading something a little different from the usual crop of cozy mysteries.

What I didn’t like:
So many questions are left unanswered: Who killed Skye’s husband? Who is Lucas and what happened to him? What’s up with Skye’s parents? What’s up with the rose? Why doesn’t Abe want Skye to work as a police officer anymore? And many more. The book answers hardly any questions. I realize that this is a series, but I would have preferred to see at least a little bit of progress in the overall story arc. Even one or two answers would have been nice.

Conclusion:
This is not a traditional mystery in the sense that you have to find out who the murderer is. We figure that out pretty early on. The rest of the book deals with finding her and taking her out. In some ways, the story strays into urban fantasy. The book is also a little more gruesome than most cozy mysteries. That’s not a bad thing, just different from most of the authors’ other books. Anyway, the book definitely left me impatient for the next installment.
If you’re unsure about giving the book a try, the authors have published a short story about Skye’s accident, and how she was turned into a zombie. It’s called 'Undead by Morning' and if you like it, then you’ll probably like this book, too.

Sky Mertz’s husband died two years ago in the same car accident that killed her. She is now a zombie, but not your average, run of the mill zombie. She would do anything for her five year old daughter. She doesn’t run around eating brains and tearing people apart, limb by limb. She could be the girl next door, with her blond hair and blue eyes.

To have another twenty years with her daughter, she traded herself to Abe as a zombie bounty hunter – she hunts down those who’s twenty years are up.

Debbie is her human partner, who works to pay off the debt she took on to bring her husband back. She is too nice. Have you ever met a person like that. All milk and cookies with sugar on top?

Lucas is like a bad penny and keeps turning up. Why is he here and so determined to stay?

Some of the bounties begged and pleaded to be let go. Sky sure does realize how important every day is, her own clock is ticking . Do YOU?

Something is not right about Abe. Is he really giving out second chances or does he have ulterior motives?

We have zombies, sorcerers, ghosts, vampires, werewolves…all the supernatural creatures you could want in a horror story.

There is some new stuff and some predictable stuff, wrapped up in a nice package. I loved the zombie twist. They don’t all have to be savages…do they?

The pacing picks up for the last quarter of the book and races to an intriguing conclusion. I didn’t get all the answers and I did go on to read Dead Girl Blues. Sky won me over and there was no way I was going to miss out on her story.

I received Broken Hearted Ghoul by Joyce and Jim Lavene in return for an honest and unbiased review.

After reading the prequel to this I was very excited to ask to read the advanced copy. It has been two years since a fatal accident that claimed Skye's husband, and also added 20 years to her life for doing "small" jobs for Abe. Abe is the donor for the 20 years he has given Skye. All she has to do is drive a cab for the undead and pick up the zombies who of already stayed there 20 years. Skye finds herself as a partner to a housewife, was working off the 20 years for her zombie husband. Also along for the ride is Lucas, a sorcerer who cannot remember how to do what he should be doing. Seriously how much trouble can you get into while driving the taxicab. Also finding themselves involved are Addie, Skye's ghostly mother-in-law and Skye's young daughter Kate.
Life gets complicated when zombies start dying on the anniversary of their 20th year. Peculiar thing is that all the dead zombies are without blood and the only thing missing is their heart. Enter Mary who seems to have a grudge against Abe and will do anything to upset his plans. Mary is also zombie who has evaded capture by Abe and his taxi drivers. The longer a zombie stays on earth the meaner they become. Truly what would you do if you were offered 20 more years to spend with your loved ones.

Once again Joyce and Jim have written a book that will hold your attention from first page to last. If you haven't had the opportunity to read a book by Joyce and Jim, take a moment and check out all the series that they have written, by my count that is six, so you should surely be able to find one to grab your attention.

When I choose my next paranormal mystery series to grow addicted to, Joyce and Jim Laverne’s Taxi for the Dead will be near the top of my list. This first novel has it all – a cool paranormal premise that’s intriguingly different from the norm, great characters, haunting hints of a larger world hidden behind the scenes, and a nicely unsettling touch of growing danger and mystery.

Have you ever wondered why the world isn’t filled with resurrected zombies already, if zombies exist? In this tale, the zombies report back to their maker after 20 years, thus solving one problem but leaving another – what happens to them then?

Skye ponders this as she drives the dead to their doom. Meanwhile she’s driving the living for a living, and bringing up a very living (and fun) daughter. The fact that Skye and her departed husband are dead – one rather less departed than the other – is only one of this novel’s paranormal twists.

Combine horror with cozy and you’ll have the flavor of this book. It’s a great, fun, scary and light-hearted read, told in a wonderfully convincing voice, and filled with thoroughly engaging action, events and dialog. Highly recommended.

Disclosure: I was lucky enough to host the author on my blog and was given a free ecopy, for which I’m offering my honest review.

Two years ago, Skye Mertz was involved in a tragic car accident that claimed the life of her husband, Jacob, and would have taken her too if not for the deal she struck with the mysterious Abe that would give her twenty more years to be with her young daughter Kate. The catch is that she would now be a Zombie and must do errands for Abe, that involve making pickups of other Zombies whose twenty year period is now over. The book opens with the introduction of her new partner, Debbie, who has taken on the contract on behalf of her husband, and shortly into the story, one of their pickups turns up even deader than normal. Skye soon discovers that this is not the first Zombie to be brutally murdered and that they are all in danger from this killer. Along the way, she meets an amnesiac sorcerer, Lucas, who seems to have a connection to her. With his help, can she find the killer before it's too late? This was a fast paced paranormal ( have I mentioned that she and her daughter also live with her ghost mother-in-law?), with interesting characters and plenty of action and mystery, and I am looking forward to the next book in this series. Disclosure: I was given an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

Broken Hearted Ghoul

What would you do if you died, but were given a chance for 20 more years to live……as a zombie? This was the decision Skye had to make when her husband Jacob and she were killed in an auto wreck. Skye was given and takes the chance of 20 more years to raise her daughter Katie. What she doesn’t plan for is being a taxi driver for the dead. She is assigned the job of picking up people who have already lived their extra 20 years and take them back to her boss, Abe. What happened from there, she wanted to know. What she didn’t know that not only were there zombies, but also ghouls, werewolves and magicians who roamed the streets of Nashville. This was not my usual kind of book, but I really enjoyed it. It kept my attention, when real life wasn’t bothering me. It wasn’t so scary that I didn’t sleep at night. In fact, I fell asleep reading each night because I didn’t want to quit reading it. It was an easy and enjoyable read. I hope there are more to come in the series.

Skye and her husband Jacob were in a traffic accident (described in the short story Undead by Morning). Jacob was killed and Skye had life-threatening injuries, enter Abraham Lincoln Jones who offers her 20 years of life, in exchange for service to Abe. This book takes place two years later, Skye's mother-in-law Addie is dead, but is a ghost and she takes care of Skye's daughter Kate. Skye drives a taxi for the dead, picking up people (zombies) whose 20 years are up. She has a human partner Debbie who has taken the service to Abe for her husband.

I loved this book. Initially I wasn't sure if I'd really like a book where the main character is a zombie, but Skye isn't the typical brain-eating zombie. Abe healed her, she has the usual problems of a single mother, well at least those who have ghosts for caretakers. She misses being a police officer and still thinks like one. The characters are all likeable and I enjoyed reading it. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Zombies, Ghouls and Sorcerers, Oh My

As a lover of anything spooky, mystical, or paranormal, I was definitely intrigued by this book.
Skye was given a second chance, in exchange for an extra 20 years instead of death, she must work for Abe, her ghoul master. Skye collects the zombies whose 20 years are over.
When her pickups are dead again, there is something evil in the air.
On top of collecting her zombies, Skye is training a new helper who has a story of her own. Debbie is doing the 20 years worth if work, so that her husband has time with his children, before taking his own taxi ride into the unknown.
It's up to Skye, Debbie, and the rest of the gang to find the evil zombie and kill it!
Sounds easy enough, but the only way to kill the zombie is to decapitate it, and that's a pretty gruesome task.
I really enjoyed this book, maybe not a typical cozy, but definitely spooky and ghoulish. I look forward to reading more!

The story was good, but the book was full of errors. There were wrong words, missing words, grammar mistakes, and continuity errors. Too bad, because there’s more to this story that I’d like to find out about.

Once again a zombie story in which... Stop! No, it is not a traditional zombie story. You will not be dealing with any apocalypse, it is neither the end of our civilization nor the other, and it is not a race for survival with man-eating monsters pursuing the characters. Did I made you curious, isn’t?

Do you know about Faust’s tale? If there the main character, after a life dedicated to science, feels that he has wasted his life and has not tasted the joys and pleasures of it, before death he makes a pact with the devil and sells him his soul in exchange of a new chance in life, in our novel the situation is not quite so dramatic. Nobody sells his soul, and the devil's role is play by a Zombie Master (not me – for those who knows what ZM stands for in GZM :D!). Now, do not think that the Zombie Master is a naive or a benefactor. In exchange for some errands, he gives those who are dying a bonus of twenty years of life to live with the loved ones. Thus they are transformed into zombies, but not some creatures in putrefaction, but identical to the living people only that... they are dead. For this period of twenty years ... not twenty and a month, not twenty one, to be respected, Zombie Master has, let’s call them, "drivers for zombie": the undertakers, whose role it is to collect those to whom the bell has struck. Why so strict? You'll find for yourselves why, and what are the consequences of the breach of the contract terms.

Such a “driver” is also the main female character of the novel, a former cop, who carries out her duty, with more or less reluctantly, until one day when everything goes haywire. As faddy as it was the world in which she lived gets fantastic accents and all sorts of sorcerers and more strange creatures start to populate it. How wouldn’t be enough that they are dead, the zombies wake up hunted. Yes, the zombies, who are usually the predators, here they become the main course on the menu. Whose menu? It is said that hate and love are the most powerful inputs of the human psyche. If we put them together and we will associate them with a supernatural being, eager for blood and vengeance, do you still give any chance to escape to the poor zombie? Find out the denouement reading the book by yourself and I guarantee you will not be disappointed, even you will have a little surprise in the ending.

A book that you will read with pleasure, in which the explosive action entwines with a bit of humour, in which mystery becomes thriller, the thriller gets horror accents and everything is wrapped up in a fantasy, whose limits oscillate throughout the story. A new and interesting approach of the zombie myth, a myth that, for the readers’ satisfaction, is constantly reinvented.

Happy Reading!

A supernatural cozy mystery with zombies! I couldn’t wait to read this book.

A car crash ended Skye’s life. Her husband didn’t survive and she was on the brink of death when she was offered a different ending. One she gladly accepted so she could have more time to raise her daughter.

So she pledged twenty years of service to Abraham Lincoln Jones and became a zombie. Not the rotting flesh and brain sucking kind. She still looks pretty much the same. But she is undead.

No longer a police officer, she now drives a taxi for the dead, making pickups for Abe when other zombies times are up, their twenty years of service over.

After two years of driving the taxi it’s become routine, until one pick up changes everything. A zombie, one of Abe’s has been killed before his time was up. A plain gold wedding band left by his heartless corpse.

More zombies are killed and it becomes a race against time to discover the killer before he sets his sights on Skye.

There are so many different plots woven into this one book.

Who is killing the zombies, ripping out there hearts and leaving wedding bands by the bodies? What is the purpose of the rings?

What or who is Lucas, Skye’s strange guest at the inn her husband inherited from his parents? He has some powers but appears to have amnesia. Who called him to Skye? Is he good or evil? Sorcerer or monster?

Perhaps Jacob’s mother can get to the bottom of it. She died but her ghost lingers at the inn. She stayed to help Skye with raising her daughter. Not liking Lucas, she’s still stuck with his presence and he does offer to help her become more solid so she can do more around the inn. Maybe a friendship will blossom and his memories will become clearer.

And just what is Abraham Lincoln Jones? He isn’t human or zombie. Where did he get the power to create zombies? Most of the time Abe is a happy guy, smiling, calm spoken. But it’s not a good idea to makes him angry and questions do that. So who or what he is will remain a mystery for now.

And what’s Skye’s new partners story. Debbie pledged twenty years of service to Abe in exchange for saving her husbands life. This hasn’t been done before. And something is strange about him. Skye senses something different in the man, not zombie. Did Abe make this unusual deal to woo Debbie? He does appear to have taken a shine to her.

See what I mean about many plots. Don’t worry about becoming confused though. The author weaves them together as the book progresses and you can easily follow along. In fact, you’ll be swept into the mystery right to the end.

I loved it. All of it. So much fun. So many mysteries. Lots of supernatural beings. A teeny bit of a possible romance. And many laughs with a good dose of sarcasm here and there. And it’s a series too! So I’ll be visiting with these characters again.

I received this book for my honest review.

Broken Hearted Ghoul is the first book in Taxi for the Dead Paranormal Mystery. I read the second book before first so some of the ending was not a mystery to me. This is a cozy mystery with unique characters. Good drama, humor and action it is a good mix.

Skye Mertz is a zombie. She agreed to drive a Taxi for the Dead for Abe for 20 years extra life. Skye and her husband were police officers in New Orleans. They were in a wreck and her husband died and she was critical. Skye was offered 20 extra years so she could raise her daughter all she has to do is quit being a police officer and work for Abe.

Skye lives in her mother-in-laws bed and breakfast with her daughter and the ghost of her mother-in-law.

Skye and her new partner pick up people whose 20 years are up and turn them in at funeral home. Somebody is killing the zombies before there 20 years is up. Ripping there hearts out.

The setting is outside of New Orleans.

I like this series and would read more of it. I like Joyce and Jim Lavene mysteries.

I was given this ebook from the authors and in return I agreed to give a honest review of Broken Hearted Ghoul.

This book follows Skye Mertz her daughter Kate and her mother-in-law as Skye is working a 20 year deal she made with a Zombie Master Abe running Taxi for The Dead they collect people who have been serving Abe and their time is up. Sometimes they run sometimes they go willingly. Skye's partner in the taxi service is Debbie who is working off a sentence for her husband so they are teamed together to pick people up. A lot happens in this book and pretty quickly.

First thing is the appearance of Lucas a sorcerer who has no idea what is happened to him and how he wound up in Skye's presence. Then there is someone killing of Abe's workers but no one seems to know why? And Abe seems determined to keep Skye out of it. When the heat is on Skye and her team of workers seem determined to save Abe even if he doesn't want saving.

I loved reading this book it was a great adventure and spin on Zombie paranormal anything paranormal is probably in this book or mentioned and it's up to Skye, Debbie, Lucas and others to figure out how to save the day. The story pulls you in and won't let go until the end. Definitely great for all those Zombie lovers out there!

I read the prequel short story to this book, Undead by Morning so, I already knew I was in for a treat, and I wasn't wrong. This series is a great twist on zombies. If you were dying but had a chance at another 20 yrs, would you take it? What if taking that chance meant that you would technically be a zombie and would owe servitude to the person that resurrected you. Would you still take the offer? Skye did in order to raise her daughter after she and her husband were in a horrible car crash. Skye is basically a taxi driver for the dead. It's her responsibility to pick up those who have come to the end of their 20 yr contract. Which can be a little more complicated than you would think. And just who is this ghoul wrecking havoc on the zombie group? If you like mysteries and zombies but don't like all the gore, this is a great series for you to try!

I love this new series; these are not the traditional zombies, the zombies in this book are pretty much normal other than they don’t need to sleep. It has been two years since Skye died and came back as a zombie. She has twenty years before she dies again. Skye has agreed to drive Abe’s taxi for the dead; she has to pick up the zombies when their twenty years are up. Skye has a new partner Debbie, who is working off her zombie husband’s service to Abe. Everything has been going fine for Skye until someone, or something is killing off Abe’s zombies before their time is up. Skye is determined to solve the question on who is killing off the zombies. I love the characters in this book. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

I loved the Lavene's Telltale Turtle and their Missing Pieces series, so when I saw this self-published paranormal cozy, I snatched it up right away. Broken Hearted Ghoul is a light, fun read. It does not go as in depth into characters and motivations as in the Missing Pieces series, but it is exactly the kind of book I need when I am in between complex urban fantasies and my nerves need to cool down. There is still lots of action and character interaction, and a unique concept to boot. Despite it's light nature, it is not fluff. There are deep underlying concepts that raise the question of how we (were we to be in Skye Mertz's shoes) would choose to live life, and how we would choose to die.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Broken Hearted Ghoul is a well told paranormal mystery. I like Skye Mertz and her stubborn determination to be there for her daughter. She became a zombie so that she can raise Kate with the help of her ghostly mother-in-law. Skye's job is to provide taxi service for the dead. Who knew there were so many zombies around us. They might deal with death but I like them. Joyce Lavene has written an off-beat and exciting adventure. I'm hooked on this series. The author knew how to get my interest. There are so many unanswered questions. Who killed Jacob, Skye's husband, and why? I plan to be there as she finds the answers! Great series that's not too scary.

How would you like to live with a ghost, zombie, sorcerer, and a preteen? Sounds like a normal everyday family, right? Skye Mertz signed a twenty year contract with Abe when she and her husband were killed in an automobile accident. The contract guaranteed her twenty years so that she could bring up their daughter Kate. The not so small print in the contract offered Skye the time in return for her becoming a zombie and running a van service to pick up other zombies when their twenty years were over. Sounds like a nice exchange, except… Nothing is ever as easy as it seems. I enjoyed this book and eagerly look forward to the next books in the series.

I wasn't quite sure what to think of this book when I started reading the first few pages. But the first few pages intrigued me so much that I had to keep reading. I usually do not read paranormal mysteries. I have to say I loved this book and it's characters. By the end of the book I kept saying to myself, why not? I became a fan. Maybe we have this secret world living with us and we don't know it. Do I need to watch to see if there are any Ghouls? The writing drew me in, kept me reading, made me chuckle at times and made me think it is entirely possible to know people like the characters. I will read more. Love it.

This book has a great concept. The protag dies, but is given an additional 20 years as a zombie to do the bidding of a zombie master. This is not a mystery where the reader follows the clues and tries to figure it out along with the main character. And it is a series, so some questions do not get answered.
What bothered me about the book was that it needed more line editing. Not misspellings, but in too many places there were too many or not enough words in a sentence, and it stopped the action to figure out what was trying to be said.

This book was a very entertaining read. I enjoyed the new spin on often overly written paranormal subjects. Skye is a great character, but I felt she was a little one dimensional. I would have liked to read more about her investigation into her husband's suspicious death and their "love story" (seemed one sided to me anyway). I suppose that might be picked up in another installment but it didn't seem to be important enough to be included in this book. Finding out more about Lucas is definitely at the top of my list as well!
