«José Eduardo Agualusa [Alves da Cunha] nasceu no Huambo, Angola, em 1960. Estudou Silvicultura e Agronomia em Lisboa, Portugal. Os seus livros estão traduzidos em 25 idiomas.

Escreveu várias peças de teatro: "Geração W", "Aquela Mulher", "Chovem amores na Rua do Matador" e "A Caixa Preta", estas duas últimas juntamente com Mia Couto.

Beneficiou de três bolsas de criação literária: a primeira, concedida pelo Centro Nacional de Cultura em 1997 para escrever « Nação crioula », a segunda em 2000, concedida pela Fundação Oriente, que lhe permitiu visitar Goa durante 3 meses e na sequência da qual escreveu « Um estranho em Goa » e a terceira em 2001, concedida pela instituição alemã Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. Graças a esta bolsa viveu um ano em Berlim, e foi lá que escreveu « O Ano em que Zumbi Tomou o Rio ». No início de 2009 a convite da Fundação Holandesa para a Literatura, passou dois meses em Amsterdam na Residência para Escritores, onde acabou de escrever o romance, « Barroco tropical ».

Escreve crónicas para o jornal brasileiro O Globo, a revista LER e o portal Rede Angola.

Realiza para a RDP África "A hora das Cigarras", um programa de música e textos africanos.

José Eduardo Agualusa (Alves da Cunha) is an Angolan journalist and writer born to white Portuguese settlers. A native of Huambo, Angola, he currently resides in both Lisbon and Luanda. He writes in Portuguese.

He has previously published collections of short stories, novels, a novella, and - in collaboration with fellow journalist Fernando Semedo and photographer Elza Rocha - a work of investigative reporting on the African community of Lisbon, Lisboa Africana (1993). He has also written Estação das Chuvas, a biographical novel about Lidia do Carmo Ferreira, the Angolan poet and historian who disappeared mysteriously in Luanda in 1992. His novel Nação Crioula (1997) was awarded the Grande Prémio Literário RTP. It tells the story of a secret love between the fictional Portuguese adventurer Carlos Fradique Mendes (a creation of the 19th century novelist Eça de Queiroz) and Ana Olímpia de Caminha, a former slave who became one of the wealthiest people in Angola. Um Estranho em Goa ("A stranger in Goa", 2000) was written on the occasion of a visit to Goa by the author.

Agualusa won the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2007 for the English translation of his novel The Book of Chameleons, translated by Daniel Hahn. He is the first African writer to win the award since its inception in 1990.

Escrita soberba, enredos muito bem concebidos, peca apenas pelo excesso de personagens que poderão fazer o leitor um pouco menos atento perder-se na leitura. Os vocábulos africanos também deveriam possuir mais correspondências em linha de rodapé, para uma melhor compreensão.

Um livro político e social que, na minha opinião, peca pelo excesso de personagens. A certo momento senti-me assoberbada com a quantidade de histórias e ligações. No entanto, é indiscutível o enorme talento de Agualusa.

The book is interesting and well written, although the bigining is difficult, as too many characters appear from the start and at first it is a bit confusing. Halfway through the book, it takes off, with a stronger link to the reader. This does not mean that it is not a good book: the historical research is notable and it gives merit to the Author's efforts. Also, I believe that it was this Author's first book. He is a WONDERFUL author and maybe that is why this book could not stand up to later, more mature, books.

Lento de ritmo, desorganizado, e com uma construção tão fragmentada que deixamos de saber quem é quem. Não foi uma leitura fácil.

É uma espécie de A Colmeia, do Cela, mas menos habilidosa.

O mérito deste livro é a caracterização da Luanda do final do séc XIX.

The story of a failed dream... Angola from 1880 to 1911 and for such a short story, a huge amount of characters! The language is delicious and the storytelling really captured my attention.
In just a few words Agualusa can paint a character, create a friendship or begin a revolution.
This was my first book by José Eduardo Agualusa, but hopefully not the last!

I did need to take notes on the characters names especially on the first chapters as they came in hordes and I couldn't keep up!

And a few notes on my edition, published by Leya: the second page mentions that this is a book of short stories, which is not correct. Also I've spotted quite a few typos. Otherwise, thanks for the edition of books in pocket version (Portuguese type of paperbacks), it is appreciated!

An accurate portrait of a group of men who plotted for the independence of Angola from the hands of Portugal between 1880 and 1911 when racism was still ablaze and a few still regreted the abolishment of slavery. Filled with love stories, bounds of friendship, clairvoyant children, and with the magic writing of Agualusa I recommend it.

Gostei muito e, por isso, recomendo a leitura deste livro. Perdi-me um pouco no início com o número de personagens e os saltos na narrativa. Ainda assim, é uma história cativante e estimulante. Conquistou-me sobremaneira na primeira página, na primeira frase, e foi um gosto chegar ao fim desta Conjura! Se tudo começou com este bonito início, foi com um grande aperto que terminou! Obrigado José Eduardo Agualusa, já tenho mais um livro seu na mesa de cabeceira!

Estive muito indecisa entre as 3 e as 4 estrelas. O livro só me interessou verdadeiramente a partir do meio. No início, e como muitos leitores já aqui referiram o número elevado de personagens torna a história confusa e confesso que todo o enredo é muito interessante mas que se no final me perguntassem qual o nome do traidor, que sei o que fazia,só não digo para não ser spoiler, eu teria que ir reler o livro.

Bom, sem dúvida que é muito bom. A escrita é complicada mas não demasiado. Concordo com as críticas que li que falam do excesso de personagens, mas isso é pouco relevante.
