The Last Operation

Rate this book
A US Special Forces operator and veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Richard Daniels is weary of serving government officials.

Ensconced deep in the Florida Everglades, Daniels flies out of his own base of operations, rescuing wealthy refugees from dangerous situations then using the funds to extract unfortunates facing the same dangers.

When two shadowy government-types attempt to hire Daniels and his team, Daniels flatly refuses. Then his seaplane is impounded, a federal warrant is issued for his arrest, and Deeno, an honorary team member with Downs Syndrome, is detained on federal charges.

Daniels's mind is changed. His new mission: In exchange for Deeno's freedom, hunt down and return "Bio", a genetically enhanced soldier gone rogue. Simple enough; Bio is already a proven killer.

But when Daniels finds the diary of the last man Bio killed... plans change.

Pretty standard A/A plotline, special forces, secret government projects, etc. but entertaining. Interesting characters, good action sequences and an interesting touch in 'government projects gone wrong'.

Fun, easy read that quickly passes the time

I picked this up on a whim and came away pleasantly surprised. The story line weaves nicely, keeps the reader easily entertained and has enough surprises that the plot outcomes are not obvious as one goes along. For those aficionados looking for realism or some deep research by the author into military, technology or financial technicalities, you’ll just have to set those aside and enjoy the quick pace and light reading (e.g., for starters a U.S Navy SEAL can’t be a Sergeant- they use Navy ranks....). Overall, it reads quickly, is fast paced, and whittles away time as a fun read.

Action pack

Not my usual type of story, but it drew me in quickly. The story flowed very well. The characters, at least the main ones, are developed very well. There was plenty of details to keep it interesting without going in over mind numbing detail. Recommended

This book held my attention throughout. I admire the character Richard Daniels and cheered him & his friends throughout their adventures. Again and again the good guys acted with integrity and honor.

Not what I expected

Not really what I expected when I bought the book, but the pen again n the book has been sitting in my kindle library for quite some time. Did not really enjoy the book, not because of bad writing but because I am currently going through a Sci fi phase.

Great story keeps the reader wanting more

A bio-enhanced soldier, an ex-special forces so,dire, a down syndicate. Young man, and many natives of the Everglades make up an intriguing story.

I started liking this book but then it started jumping all around and I really couldn't relate with the characters or the story line.

Good story, but lost of spelling/usage mistakes. Guy needs proofreader/editor!

Kind of like Terminator without the nuclear holocaust. Had to laugh at Navy Seal Sergeant. In my 20 years I never ran into a Sergeant.

Drug wars and CIA involvement, betrayal by covert government operatives, bio-engineering, fast paced action, blood and gore. If any of these trigger your 'I want to read it' button then you want to pick this one up. It has them all and is well written with really great characters and an intrigue full plot line. The bad guys are really evil (but not in an over-the-top evil way) and the good guys make mistakes and get into a world of hurt but keep going. I hadn't read any of this authors works before but he is going on my list as a writer who can really tell a military/spy kind of story with realism.

Hardly comment on editing issues but in this case the misuse, mis-spelled and sheer number of words missing were glaring distractions that made it hard to concentrate on the actual story content.

This was a long, rambling journey that made up a pretty good book. The fact that at times it was tough to differentiate between those on the side of right from those doing wrong added to the mystery of it all.

Filled with bursts of intense action, brutal violence and the thrill of unraveling the plots twists this was for the most part an okay read. Not enticing enough though to bring me to read any more in the series.

Too much just didn’t work for me in this novel. First, we are expected to believe a tough, battled-hardened soldier can dress up as a knock-out blond and pull it off even when in the embrace of the man she (or he) is supposed to seduce. Then the author conveys a deep lack of knowledge of firearms—not good in this genre. (For the record, no commando would select a 30-30 Winchester as a sniper rifle; and no, there are no magnum loads for the 30-30.) The final straw for me was when a handful of $1,000 were displayed to buy the services of the protagonist. Really? Fact: $100 bill is the largest note in circulation—has been for decades. Disappointing.

Modern Thriller at its blandest

Modern Thriller at its blandest

This book is pretty much the personification of the modern American thriller. The plot is pretty paper thin, the bad guys are really pretty stupid but quintessentially evil, and the good guys are all true blue Army special forces super soldiers. It's fine for light summer reading while semi trashed on Coronas next to the pool or while on a long flight, but not good for much else.

A better than average thriller. Former military operators contract to work with the CIA to take down drug lords in Mexico. It wouldn't be a story without some betrayal.

Move the story forward 10 years and it picks up in the Everglades with a search for a genetically engineered super soldier that has escaped.

Throw in a 'Glades Seer and an indian 'witch doctor' and you have a very entertaining story.

Three. Three stories in one. I sound like The Count from Sesame Street. There were three short stories connected together, kind of. The prologue is linked to the second section. The first section is an extraction from some drug cartels. The second is its own weird rescue. The writing was just okay. There were a few editing errors which did not catch grammar and spelling.

I don't generally like when a book skips from present to past and back to present. If it's done too many times I can get lost or lose interest. In this book the author does this skillfully. It has a sci-fi aspect to it as well. If you like thrillers with a touch of sci-fi and mystical characters you will like this book.

Entertaining read. Good story.

However, the author/editor needs to learn the difference between its and it's, then and than, and that criteria is plural, while criterias isn't a word.

I like to read free kindle books from time to time and most are not that good but this one is about a 3.5 stars. Decent story line and flowed together really well. It was worth the try
