A dense paperback of basic writings of seventeenth century philosophers. From Bacon to Leibniz, these men began to explain natural processes in mathematical terms, setting the stage for the coming Enlightenment. Hampshire's excellent introductory passages opens the world and thoughts of these philosophers to modern minds. A trove of original writings.

Still, when I first read this--and the other Mentor Philosophers volumes--in the 1960s, it opened a world of thought that I didn't then realize existed. These people struggles long and hard making sense of the world in which they lived: a world very different--yet not so different--from ours.

An absolutely superb anthology of the writings of the major philosophers of the 17th century. This was the century that exploded in scientific and mathematical knowledge that created the modern world. From Galileo’s use of the telescope to explore the heavens and Leeuwenhoek’s invention of the microscope to the Cartesian planes of Renee Descartes and the discovery of the calculus by Leibniz and Newton man was now on his way to a much truer understanding of the natural world. Stuart Hampshire does a brilliant job of introducing and commenting on the philosophers who grasped the significance of what the 17th century was all about and where man was headed because of it. Not to be missed.

Years back, when I was entusiastic about history of philosophy in recent centuries, Derek, a British friend of mine recommended this series. I enjoyed them very much, as if reading a novel or so.
The Age of Reason is some introductions and commentaries about famous philosophers of 17th. century, such as Bacon, Hobbes, Descartes, Spinoza and Leibtniz.

This book may no longer be printed. I got it from a used book store online. It is a nice compilation of the 17th century philosophers' introductions and their own writings.

A brief compilation and great book to get a quite general grasp of philosophers of the time - Bacon, Galileo, Hobbes, Descartes, Pascal, Spinoza, and Leibniz.

For those new to philosophy,
