Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy: Understanding and Addressing the Sacred

Rate this book
From a leading researcher and practitioner, this volume provides an innovative framework for understanding the role of spirituality in people's lives and its relevance to the work done in psychotherapy. It offers fresh, practical ideas for creating a spiritual dialogue with clients, assessing spirituality as a part of their problems and solutions, and helping them draw on spiritual resources in times of stress. Written from a nonsectarian perspective, the book encompasses both traditional and nontraditional forms of spirituality. It is grounded in current findings from psychotherapy research and the psychology of religion, and includes a wealth of evocative case material.

While some of the stats and observations are outdated by now, I really appreciate many of Pargament’s thoughts about spiritually integrated psychotherapy. This book provided some helpful guidance in how to talk with patients about spirituality and assess the role of spirituality in their lives. It also provided some helpful insight into my own spiritual journey and how I want to integrate spirituality into my work.

A good textbook for my practicum class. I definitely agree that spirituality should be talked about more often in psychotherapy because it's the central framework people use, consciously or unconsciously, to make meaning out of life events and to make decisions.

Great text, very helpful for clinicians wanting to increase their competency in spiritually sensitive psychotherapy. The text is very bound to the Judeo-Christian perspective and is therefore somewhat limited in its utility in working with clients who come from Asian religions.
