German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).

Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This jurist and mythologist also authored the monumental German Dictionary and his Deutsche Mythologie .

My first original Grimm fairy tale, not as dark as I thought, but dark enough still. Has a boy named Sorrowful, which is quite sorrowful if you think about it. This review is deep.

But on the next morning, when the wizard came again, her hands were as pure and clean as ever, for she had wept over them.

Their original fairytales are very atmospheric and I usually enjoy them a lot. I didn't really connect with this one as much. Still enjoyable, but not my favourite. Yay for the happy ending, though.

The tale is also called "The Handless Maiden" or "The Girl with Silver Hands" or "The Armless Maiden.” Like Iron Hans, there are many variations of this tale. It is originally the 31st tale and Aarne-Thompson type 706. The story is about a maiden who loses her hands because of her father’s deal with the Devil. She lives a difficult life but eventually marries a king and gives birth to a child. The Devil intervenes once again and the queen is lost again. The queen’s hands grow back and eventually, the king and her son find her and they live happily ever after. The story is essentially about good being rewarded. If you continue to do good, no matter the hardships, you will surely be rewarded. The girl’s father was an evil man even though he was tricked by the Devil. The girl has physically clean hands but even after cutting them off, the Devil still cannot take her because she has a pure heart. She cannot be touched by evil and eventually her hands grow back which is explained through God’s will. This story was written in the early 19th century and people loved stories with Christian morals and messages. Thus, it is important to live a life without sin with faith in God so that the Devil cannot corrupt you. Compared to “Iron Hans,” there are many adaptations of the story such as films, animations, and even video games.

I have the complete set of the Grimm Fairy-Tales, and there are so many that I haven’t read! They are very short, as one would know, so I have decided to read each one and give them a review. Some are very vulgar, some are very cute and some don’t even make sense. Some of them are well known fairy-tales and some have never been told. Some are fairy-tales we know but are not the same because they have been downplayed for the children.

This story is completely based on faith of God and I absolutely love the fact that they did that in a fairytale. There is obviously things that can’t happen that do happen, but it is a wonderful story.

It tells the reader that even in absolutely horrible times, there is hope and you need to hold onto it because you will get what you need and more in the end.

I do not know any other reason on why to give this fairytale a 5 star rating other than it is brilliantly written. Really hate the daughter's father for being so cowardly and willing to sacrifice his only daughter.
If you want a so not well known Grimm Tale, read The Girl Without Hands. Its a keeper.

The Girl Without Hands is an interesting fairy tale compiled by the brothers Grimm in their many collections (well, from what I can tell, their one collection--a collection which they heavily edited from it's first publication and onward, thus the term "many"). It describes the life of the titular woman without hands. It is not a long story, and the moral--if one was ever intended--is a bit misty, but I think that it might just be to 'take life as it is and live piously, and thus you shall have a well-worn life'. Or some such idea.

From reading other Goodreads review, it seems what is most striking about this story is the aspect of piety that our protagonist displays--that even in her afflictions, her faith in God was able to preserve her. This explains why, near the middle, an angel is with her as she takes pears from the King's pear tree; and it also explains why she is able to hide when she mistakenly believes her husband to be lusting for her blood (in the altogether bad, murderous way).

I didn't really like this story, although I gave it four stars. One major drawback the story presented to me early on, and for which it recovered somewhat slowly, comes from my preconceived expectations. I wanted the story to be about a woman without hands (literally, just never had hands), but, contrarily, the story is about a woman who loses her hands through devilish trickery and perhaps a bit of fatherly selfishness. I also didn't like that the handless woman gave away her hands out of a sense of duty to her father; it should be out of love. This only really becomes a problem when we realize that the story mimics itself when the King commits to a great affliction in order to find her, his Queen at this point, apparently out of love. Why contrast these things?

Anyway, my musings aside, this story is a fun one, if not well-remembered, and probably not one to teach to children to enlighten their minds. If one is here to give them a bit of entertainment, then, the first thing I would say is, why are you reading this book? The second would be to say that, although I called it "fun" earlier, I would still say there are other stories to read, far better than this, and possibly more entertaining to children. Who knows, though--I can't stop you, and I haven't been a child for a few too many years now.

I read from the 1884 translation by Margaret Hunt.

Jacob Grimm, alongside his brother Wilhelm, is renowned for compiling "Grimm's Fairy Tales," a collection of German folktales. This book is a captivating journey into the heart of folklore, presenting a mixture of enchanting and sometimes dark stories that have fascinated readers for generations. Grimm's work is not just a mere collection of tales; it's a profound exploration of the human condition, morals, and the cultural heritage of Germany. The stories range from the well-loved "Cinderella" and "Snow White" to the less known but equally intriguing tales. Each story is a masterpiece of fantasy, imbued with timeless themes and moral lessons, making this book a valuable treasure for both young and adult readers. Jacob Grimm's contribution through this compilation has left an indelible mark on literature and continues to inspire the imagination of readers worldwide.

One of the Grimm Brothers grimmer tales. A poor miller makes a bargain with the devil in exchange for wealth, but unwittingly gives up his daughter in exchange. However, the girl is so innocent the devil cannot touch her, even after the father is forced to cut off her hands. The pious girl eventually goes out on her own and comes to another kingdom. With the help of angels, she is able to eat fruit from a king's garden. The king discovers her and treats her kindly, and eventually marries her. They have a child. However, the devil, still bitter about losing his prize, causes confusion which forces the young woman and child to flee for their lives.

The original tale is much better but also darker then the version kids see.

It is different but not that different from what you might remember from first hearing this tale as a kid.

The plot here are very good but also dark which is the mix which I personally like a lot.

The writing style here was very old and you could feel the vibe of old the Europe which was amazing for me.

The wonderful thing about choosing an author to read in a year is, not only do you get to read their ‘well known’ or ‘classics’ of there works, but so much more. I never realised or would have associated the amount of parables and religious set works to Jacob Grimm. This is one of them, and, a real joy to read.

This is the story I read tonight in my Brothers Grimm complete fairy tale book. I'm a little surprised this isn't more well-known. I hadn't heard of it at all before tonight. It reminds me a lot of the story of Jephthah's Daughter in Judges 11: 30-39

Reading through this one you can tell they worked in a lot of symbolism like they did for some of their favorites.
