Detective Jack Van Pierre is no ordinary detective. He is no ordinary vampire either. One thing is for sure, he is intent on delivering justice in his own special way. He is a vampire that only preys on the blood of criminals and he has been cleaning up New York for the past 10 years all by himself.
However, the time has now come to move on before his secret is uncovered but there is a minor complication. A human female. Her name is Olivia. The Detective Vampire faces a very hard decision. Does he play it safe and leave before anyone gets hurt? Or does he risk exposing his true identity in the chase of that thing that humans call “love”?
I admit I can't make up my mind about this book. The plot is pretty simple and should be intriguing, and full of suspense but somehow, it falls short of what is a seemingly promising novel. The writing isn't particularly enticing despite the mysterious hero. He frankly is too blah for me. I mean for a 100 and plus year old vampire who's used to hunting down hardened criminals, he should have a stronger personality. Not necessarily a violent, merciless one but... A personality that truly engages one, not this bland, almost transparent person.
Now I'm in a serious bind because there's a cliffhanger, and despite my disappointment with this book. I'll most probably end up reading the rest of this series. Ha!
Well I liked how this book started out, in the first person describing Jack's thoughts feelings and intuition. As we discover more about him we can see why he chooses the victims he chooses to attack purely to get rid of the bad guys I guess, the ones who slip through the justice net and don't end up going to prison, instead end up meeting a grisly end by Jack's hand.
Jack becomes more human in thinking in the way he talks to Tom and Olivia and it's nice to see even a vampire can't understand a woman's logic. But for the amount of movies and books he reads over his 140 years he doesn't seem to understand some of the basic knowledge of sarcasm or love? What books did he read? What other films bar horror did he watch? Wouldn't you be trying to blend in to the humans around you so be more perceptive about how people around you react?
Overall it was a goodish plot, I don't think there was much need for the sex scenes in this story and they seemed very bland and quickly added in as an afterthought, the romance didn't feel or click with anything I wouldn't even call it romance if I'm honest because sex isn't romance.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I started reading this expecting something akin to Dexter. A vigilante taking care of the bad guys when the justice system fails and I walked away feeling like I was reading something more akin to 50 Shades of Grey. Needless to say, I was disappointed.
Jack is a detective, but he is also a vampire that only drinks the blood of those that the justice system has let slip through its fingers. He knows that he needs to move on after he has spent too much time in NYC and people are surely starting to know that something is up with him. When he starts to develop feelings for Olivia, Jack feels the need to stay in NYC which only causes problems.
Being a detective and a vigilante, I was excepting some action, some interest in the cases and what was going on, but I got none of that. Instead, that was more focused on Jack and Olivia's relationship. I didn't want that. I wanted a detective vampire! That disappointment aside, I feel like Jack and Olivia's relationship comes out of nowhere. There is an attraction from Olivia's side, but Jack doesn't really see it then next thing you know they are having sex. It came out of nowhere and was... I'm not sure I even have the words for it.
This dry story turned into something I didn't want and has left me a little bitter.
I thought this will be interesting, but just as Jack found vampires to be boring I found him and this entire book boring. There is no romance, no buildup and just overall a bland book. The premise is good but the book was tedious and I am glad it was short.
The story is really different. Its more of a storytelling or narrative about this vampire named Jack. Its interesting. But it ends with a cliffhanger. I don't like cliffhanger stories. But at least the 2nd book is out. Now to go find what happens next.
Well I was a bit disappointed with this one. As for a vampire detective I hoped for more excitement within the cases. It was not bad written, but I really missed a good building up the thrilling in this book. Nothing happened....for my taste is was quite flat no excitement that you look forward what will happen. I read this within two hours at airport lol I will not go for the next one, sorry!
I liked this book even though it came off kind of bizarre. The fact that it is an interracial paranormal romance makes no difference really since it is still just a good vampire story. This does remind me of two of my favorite TV shows, Forever Knight and Moonlight, the character and back story seem very similar to both the vampires in these shows. The language is stiff and formal in the beginning both the conversations as well as the background narration. Some of the phrasing is awkward like the sentence "He is yet to notice I am there" which had me scratching my head for a minute. The dialogue does loosen up after a few chapters and allows you to identify with the characters a bit more. I still did not get into the characters as much as I would have liked to but the premise kept me interested enough to want to see more of them.
Detective Jack Van Pierre is not your average cop, he's also a vampire with his own code and way of delivering justice, he feeds only on the blood of criminals. He has kept New York safer for 10 yrs and now its time for him to move on. The thing is even though he has been careful not to become involved all these years so leaving would be easy he has found a reason not to go and her name is Olivia. While working on a vampire serial killer case, they become closer than he wanted, but it happens. Now he can leave and break her heart or stay and risk her finding out his secret. What's a vampire to do? Only his diary knows the full story.
This was different yet familiar at the same time and kept me reading. I do want to see where this goes as the series continues. Worth a look.
I think this book was interesting. I really liked it because I like vampire stories, and I think it's fair how he tries to be good throughout the book by only killing the bad people. The main character's name is Jack. Jack is a vampire, but also a detective. Jack goes around the world every couple of years. He can't stay in one place too long, because people will start to realize that he hasn't aged a bit and get suspicious. I'm not a big reader so I'll probably save the sequels for next year's summer reading!
The writing style is pretty simple. However, the premise is pretty clever. A bit more creativity and spunk would have been nice. The basic idea of the story pretty much carries it. It was fair.
Jack is a vampire and a detective. He stays in one place long enough to clear it up and to not be found out. the time has come for him to leave but then he meets Olivia. Does it stay and get found out or does he leave and forego love.
I read this first book, but I can't honestly believe I forced myself to finish this.
The story telling was lackluster and the personalities of the character fell flat. I felt like Jack's not knowing how to interact with humans was just the author's way of covering up their inability to write decent dialogue.
Then there was Olivia's interactions in the story. Jack sees her as strong, but in scenes she comes off as weak, unable to argue a point and a bit of loon with her emotions.
So, even though I rate it as two stars, I think the author has potential. I like the regard that Jack can only read the same sexes mind, but not the opposites. It gives him a little bit of a disadvantage to knowing everything that goes on around him. This could be valuable if placed in other situations where he's suppose to be this grand detective, who's abilities get called into question when all the people in the case are women. Such a scenario would be great for the author.
Tips on improvement: Try to flesh out your characters more and rework this book. We know only a glimpse into Jack's life, play more into it to have it unfold more about his character and the character of other people around him, instead of snippets of the main people in the book.
After all, Jack and Olivia are the people readers are going to be following up on since their the main focus of the book.
Don't rush things because, honestly, I felt like reader is just forced though the book like Jack was too distracted to fill us in more about details of his life because it mattered little to him. That's fine for the character, not so much for the reader.
So, JJ Jones, I don't know if you'd read this, but keep those things in mind. You have potential. Your STORY has potential. I hope that you'll try again with this book and revamp it and give it that edge it needs to make it more flowing. Give your characters and story more life! I hope these words find you well.
