You don’t have to believe in ghosts…until you meet one.
Once again Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey are listening to the Spirit Radio when they hear a cry for help from a mother whose four-year-old daughter, Emma went missing in the middle of a busy lobby at the infamous Stanley Hotel. But time traveling back to 1911 is a lot more complicated than the three trips they had taken earlier in the summer. They have to find appropriate clothes and figure out a way to pay for their stay. When they hear about a tragic fire that hurt several hotel employees, the teens take advantage of the hotel’s desperation and get jobs working as lady’s maids and houseboys so they can keep an eye on Emma and her family.
Even though they know that The Stanley Hotel is possibly the most haunted place in the U.S., the four teenagers are a little creeped out when they hear ghostly children running in the halls, singing songs and even a mysterious ball that keeps showing up in their room. How could a hotel that is only two years old already be haunted? Most importantly, how can they stop Emma from becoming one of the ghosts that are trapped inside the luxurious hotel?
Midway through their first summer together, they celebrate the Fourth of July twice in one year. As they try to figure out the mystery of Emma’s disappearance, they bump into some famous people and experience several historical events. But ultimately, it’s their trust in each other and the friendship that has been forged by two unique experiences no one else on the planet has ever done…talk with dead people and time travel to the past. Their first trip back to 1966 had stopped the murder of a teenager from their school. Their next trip to 1980 had tested their courage as they were brought face-to-face with a man who was determined to murder an entire family. Their last trip to 1927 had saved the life of a handsome young man who had run away to a traveling circus. Zoey, the former mean girl of South Beach High School, suffered her first heartbreak by falling in love with a man from the wrong century. Back in 1911 there are no TV news crawlers or Amber Alerts like we see along the interstate highways today. Instead, Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey must try to be in the right place at the right time to stop the tragedy of Emma’s disappearance from happening. They follow her and her family around while enjoying life among the rich and famous. They arrive as skeptics, but leave as believers when all four teens have ghostly encounters. Kelly and Austin grow closer as they share fireworks shows, first on the sand in Fort Myers Beach and second on a blanket in the Rocky Mountains. But is their romance doomed almost as soon as it began?
When their plans go wrong, they face their first defeat. The same danger that takes Emma now threatens the teens when one of their own is captured in a killer’s web. Will they be able to save Emma? Or will they join her as permanent guests in the ghostly halls of The Stanley Hotel?

Disclaimer: This book was sent to me by the author, Bob Kat, for an honest review.
This is book 4 in the CUL8R series, and definitely my favorite one so far. I don’t know if it’s because of the paranormal themes, because it is set in the early 1900’s, or because our characters travel back in time to solve a mystery at a famous hotel…but MY OH MY did I read through this book like crazy.
In book 4, our group of time travelers decide to risk their lives again in the hopes of saving another life. After hearing the voice of a woman pleading for her child to be found over their Spirit Radio, the teens find themselves traveling through time to 1911 to help a young girl named Emma at the famous Stanley Hotel. As the four work hard to make sure Emma doesn’t fall into the same fate as before, they each ensure to keep a close watch on her and her mother and grandfather. But soon, things start to turn out not quite as they seem. They start to hear voices of children playing in the halls, when they were told that Emma is the only child currently staying at the hotel, as well as things being moved. Things start to get much more complicated for the four teenagers, and things turn out to be much trickier than they originally expected.
I personally LOVE a book that centers on a paranormal mystery, and especially one that is set in a hotel, so this book was perfect for me. Oddly enough, I am a big fan of hotels, call me weird but I am. If you told me I could stay in hotel after hotel every night, traveling all over the world (and all over different time eras) well…you know I would. But when you really think about it, a hotel is a really creepy and disturbing kind of place to stay at night. Countless people stay in the same rooms, sleep on the same mattresses, and use the same tub and showers. EW! Let’s all agree to refuse to think about that. ANYWAYS, the idea of a book intertwining paranormal activity (no, not the movie) with time traveling teens who need to solve the disappearance of a little girl at a hotel in 1911, is perfect. As this is now the fourth time Kelly, Scott, Austin, and Zoey have traveled through time together, they have mastered how to blend into their new eras with finesse. In this installment, the four teens are dropped into a time where the women dress in corsets and their finest dresses for dinner and barely anyone knows how to drive a vehicle. I found it very enjoyable to have Zoey and Kelly working as handmaidens in the hotel, but also how the author’s managed to work quite a few historical characters into this story.
Not only did the authors do research into this hotel for their story, but they actually went with Ghost Hunters Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson to the hotel and stayed there. The Ghost Hunters had previously gone to The Stanley Hotel for their television show, as many people have claimed to see spirits or paranormal sightings in the hotel rooms or halls. This hotel also is the basis for Stephen King’s story The Shining, and Stephen King also claims to have seen a small boy calling for his nanny at the hotel. As a reader, I really appreciated the authors going the extra mile to tie actual claims into their book. In Rest In Peace, Scott and Austin tell the girls that every night their room starts to smell of cherry pipe tobacco, which is also a real claim that has been made about the hotel. I found it very fascinating to find out that there were so many links between this story and actual claims, and I even found myself doing more research into the hotel.
Finally, I must address the situation between Austin and Kelly. I am all for making readers wait to know what will happen when it comes to “who done it’s” or end of the world fiascoes, but these guys are killing me here!! Just when the authors start to give you a little insight to something between Kelly and Austin, and everything seems to be going wonderfully, WHAM!! Blindsides and cliffhangers. Oh, this is torturous. Due to my being VISIBLY distraught with needing to read book 5, I messaged “part” author of the series Kathy Clark and she explained to me that book 5 will hopefully be released in 2016. So yes, we must wait but I think it will be highly worth it. Once again guys, please please PLEASE go and give this series a chance. It is full of adventure, humor, and amazing situations that the main characters get themselves into. Time traveling teenagers, what’s not to love?
A Delightfully Suspenseful Read That Keep The Pages Turning Into the Wee Hours of the Morning!
Wow! I am impressed with this series! Add another Fan to the list! Although I must admit I am no YA…I love paranormal stories, and especially when combined with crime sleuthing! I have had an affinity for all things paranormal all my life, particularly with ghosts and spirit encounters using different types of communication. I dabbled in doing my own séances a few times as well. My other passion has always been crime solving. I am an avid true crime buff, reader and researcher.
Although this is geared toward YA; I found this to be a gripping read. I have read a lot of paranormal mysteries that have been lacking in some way or another. Bob Kat does an exceptional job at crafting a suspenseful, gripping read that keeps the readers undivided attention right up until the very end. I loved the dynamics portrayed within this circle of friends! Kelly, Austin, Scott and Zoey are entwined flawlessly, each with their own depth of character and personality. Although I thrive on the paranormal mystery aspect of the story— the characters have to be realistic …and each must have dynamic characteristics in their own way to capture my interest and keep it peaked. This group of friends quickly sucked me into their adventures and I have enjoyed every moment of the experience right alongside them!
The Time travel aspect is a fantastic bonus enabling these four teens to travel back in time to help the distressed spirits they communicate with through a spirit radio which was discovered in Book 1 as an invention that Kelly’s great-great grandfather worked on with none other than Thomas Edison. I love the way the author weaves real people and places into the story …making it even more realistic and exciting. Each Book covers a separate exciting time traveled adventure!
In RIP …the four friends travel back in time to 1911 to the infamous Stanley Hotel! This is the part that intrigued me and enticed me into reading this book. I have seen the Movie and read the book ‘The Shining’ and it never gets old. I had to have it… and I was Not at all disappointed because the entire book was awesome! The writing and plot alone was brilliant…the fantastic four end up working at the hotel…while trying desperately to find little Emma…and keep her from becoming the next disembodied spirit to haunt the halls of the Stanley Hotel….I am speechless at this point because *Without giving spoilers* the entire plot was so unexpected! Combine that with intricate scenes described in depth, the realism of the characters and the ‘edge of your seat’ suspense and you’ve got yourself one hell of a read!…It had my undivided attention…many twists and turns…surprises and of course, unexpected diversions…I could not put this one down! Brilliant job and an impeccable delivery to say the least!
I have went on to read Book One in the Series ‘OMG’ and now I am off to get the other two books! Great Job and perfect delivery! The author has a unique way of storytelling that will leave you wanting more!…
In Summary: Love it...Love It ....Love it! Get a copy and I promise you will be ‘Hooked’!
Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey have had other time travel adventures before Bob Kat’s teen novel, RIP, begins, but it’s easy to pick up the thread even if you’ve not ready the earlier novels (I hadn’t). The story starts with Kelly and Austin’s growing relationship, but Austin thinks Kelly’s with Scott and so... Very natural teen relationships ensue, from frantic drives across town to crowded beach for a fireworks party. These are very real and relatable teens, but they also have a secret Spirit Radio and a phone app that lets them move into the past. And Zoey, who might fall for Scott, once fell head over heels for a circus guy back in 1927.
The novel is a pleasing mix of genres, blending the present day with well-researched history, and combining intriguing sci fi with mystery and paranormal ghost story. Historical and geographical details ring true, and the chance to drive a Stanley Steamer in an early car race (where finishing first really isn’t the point) offers a thoroughly enjoyable interlude to investigation and adventure. Of course, there’s always the butterfly effect too, restricting quite what these intrepid explorers can do.
Emma’s voice from the Spirit Radio pleads for help finding her missing child. And the four teens are sure they can save her from abduction, even as the list of suspects grows longer. But a ghostly red ball and other distractions complicate the plan.
The story’s sometimes slow, but only where necessarily for new readers needing to learn where these teens are coming from. As the adventure progresses the action speeds up, and there are some thoroughly enjoyable scenes of modern teens dropped into a world of servants below stairs. The plot’s well-drawn. The history’s well-researched. And the whole is a pleasing teen novel, with just enough heart-searching to provoke curiosity and empathy--and a desire to catch up on earlier tales.
Disclosure: I was lucky enough to be given an eArc before publication.
RIP – Rest In Peace by Bob Kat contains short and sweet 16 chapters aimed at teenagers. The story is about stopping a girl, Emma from becoming one of the ghosts that are trapped inside the luxurious hotel, the Stanley Hotel, the most haunted place in the U.S. A group of 4 teenagers try to figure out the mystery of Emma’s disappearance, they bump in some famous people and experience several historical events. This book shares two unique experiences no one else on the planet has ever done…talk with dead people and time travel to the past. The story begins with Spirit Radio an invention done by Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey that allows them to communicate with the dead. Once they were listening to the Spirit Radio they heard a cry for help from a mother whose four-year-old daughter, Emma went missing in the middle of a busy lobby at the infamous Stanley Hotel. With the use of their time travelling machine they went back to 1911. The plot develops at a good pace, with enough action to keep you hooked and plenty of character development to boot. A tragic fire at the hotel paved way for these teens to enter the hotel easily and got job working as lady’s maids and houseboys so they can keep an eye on Emma and her family.
Will their plans work? Will they be able to save Emma? Will all of them join with Emma as permanent guests in the ghostly halls of The Stanley Hotel? You will be pretty much excited I know……… It will not be fair if I revealed the whole story so have a copy of this nice book you will enjoy it sure. Romance, Adventure, Horror all are well blended highly recommended.
Four high school teens; Kelly, Scott, Austin, and Zoey; find adventure using an invention that they have named the Spirit Radio. Kelly's aunt's historical house had been the resting place of this technological marvel that had been created by Thomas Edison and lost for years. With some modern tweaking by Scott, the group's technogeek, the radio now picks up voices of spirits which the group travel through time and space to try to help the spirits' ability to rest in peace.
I really don't like to join a series in the middle of it. I often feel lost as previous adventures are referred to without much detail given for those readers who have not read the previous books. Or on the flip side of that coin, it gives too much detail so that I feel that if I were to go back and read previous books, the ending would be ruined due to too much information given in the back story. This book has found a happy medium between those two scenarios.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Not too immature for adult readers and yet something that I could give to my teenage daughter with confidence that the story would not be too difficult for her to understand or too mature as many young adult books can be. Just from this one sample of the series I would highly recommend it and look forward to reading more.
Bob Kat does it again with RIP, the latest novel in the CUL8R (See You Later) series and adds another rollicking adventure to her time traveling paranormal series for young adults. The book draws you in from the first chapter, and even if you haven’t read the previous books you’ll find it easy to step into the flow of the story.
The bulk of the story takes place in 1911, when the four teens of the story travel pack in time to the Stanley Hotel in order to save a 4-year-old girl named Emma from going missing. In case you are not familiar with the Stanley, it has a long been believed to be haunted and has been used as a location in various fictional stories such as Stephen King’s The Shining. The story quickly becomes more complicated, and the teens find that saving Emma may be more complicated than the could ever have imagined.
Bob Kat’s writing style is fun, fast, and imaginative. She will hook you in as the plot develops and keep you there until you have finished reading the entire book with her great use of suspense. I heartily recommend the book if you’re a fan of young adult paranormal or science fiction, and I would strongly suggest you give it a try even if those are not your usual genres.
Summary: The book that I’m focusing on is only one of the entire series – book #4 entitled Rest in Peace (or RIP). The story as a whole is a fictional time-traveling tale scripted for young adults. RIP, the forth book of the series, picks up with our familiar characters (particularly Kelly and Austin! Do they get together? You’ll have to read and finally find out) but this time at the famous Stanley Hall. Our friends are on a journey to rescue a young girl from the most haunted halls in the world, the corridors of Stanley Hall.
Review: I want to point out foremost that the book has got a solid purpose and meaning. The team that has made this book happen was driven by the idea of providing young readers with a story that both stirs the imagination but also calls into question the motives of the main characters. Why do seek to rescue Emma? Because that’s the kind of people that we should be – always seeking to help the lost and weary, no matter the stakes. Putting aside the purpose and the meaning, I think that this is a fun and well-written book. It is clean and I would encourage young readers to pick up a copy.
When I was younger I used to love The Secret Seven and The Famous Five books by Enid Blyton, this book reminds me so much of those , filled with so much adventure as a group of 4 teenagers set out on a mysteries journey as they travel back in time to save a young girl named Emma.
What really set’s this apart is the wonderful scenery descriptions the author has done such a great job of taking you with him as he sets each scene to perfection which happens to be on this occasion one of the most haunted places ever the Stanley Hotel in the year 1911.
Concluding the characters are all beautifully written each having their own unique personalities, making this one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time superb.
What happens when a group of four teenagers find a way to travel through time? You get an adventure where mysteries get solved. The group consists of Austin, Kelly, Zoey, and Scott. I really like the characters in this book mainly because they are smart and resourceful kids. In this book they travel back to the early 1900’s in Colorado. They meet some pretty interesting folks along the way while they work at a resort for the wealthy. And they are also able to help someone out along the way. This book is aimed toward young adult readers, but it is also a great read for adults who have spent any time wondering about time travel. If you like mysteries with a little bit of sci-fi, and a little bit of paranormal, this book will surely please you.
Sometimes I have trouble getting into YA fiction. I feel like it can often be vapid, patronizing, or just boring. This book, I am pleased to report, is a great exception to that rule. The characters are so well-developed that I found myself tensing up alongside them in some of the more suspenseful scenes. The plot is artfully developed and satisfying and the writer's style is simple and strong, which I really appreciate. The author takes what could potentially (in my opinion) be a preposterous plotline and turns it into an artful, enjoyable, and engaging story. Truly enjoyed it and highly recommend it! I received a copy of the book to review.
Another enjoyable mystery from the past, with a slightly different hook, and a surprising little twist toward the end. The traveling gang has spent some time apart after their last adventure, and come back together after the 4th of July to see who contacts them through their "Spirit Radio". This time, it turns out, they're going to be visiting a famously haunted hotel back in 1911.
We get to encounter Stanley Steamers (cars, not carpet cleaners), supercilious hotel staff, the unsinkable Molly Brown, and a host of other interesting characters in a Downton Abbey in the Wild West setting. All quite fun. The ghost theme seemed a bit unusual to me (though perhaps I should have been thinking of this series as more of a "paranormal happenings" setting than "soft sci-fi", and then the ghosts make sense), but it worked.
With a smattering of danger and a mystery to solve, this is a fast-paced story that wraps up the immediate plot, and leaves you interested in what's going to happen to the present-day kids as the series continues. (Later this year, the afterword tells us...)
