Peter Lake, in writing a book on law and policy for student affairs professionals, referenced Harry Potter, Animal House, and The Blues Brothers. I think it is safe to say that he understands his audience. The author included great examples and made the topics understandable. It is a nice overview that can be read straight through or for use as a reference by chapter.
I read this book for class, and it is hard to give a fair rating of a book that is my first dive into anything legal. What I will say is that there are a lot of references to Animal House in this book, which made it a bit of a challenge at times since I have not seen the movie.
Love. This should be required reading for higher ed programs...I would have loved to have read this in 2011 when it came out, but am so glad I picked it up at the recent ASCA Gehring Academy. It's a dense book. Only 6 chapters but intense and thought-provoking. My brain hurt after the safety and risk management chapter- 88 pages of fun! But I loved this book. Every page. I actually finished off a highlighter and an entire post-it flag tray.
Peter Lake covers law, history, risk management, environmental factors, civil rights, diversity, federal policies, and structure. He brings in humor to sometimes very unfunny topics with quotes from Animal House and Harry Potter, random associations to pop culture that are sometimes a little out of left field, but helped a lot. I had to take many, many breaks while reading because there was just so much information. I highly recommend it!
(*Apparently some higher ed programs do require it...I wish mine had)
