❤️❤️❤️This book has all the elements I love in a graphic novel.❤️❤️❤️ First, let start with the artwork. It is so good. The style was consistent throughout the book. The artist did a superior job of conveying emotions and depicting angles that made the story come to life. Second, the story made sense and was very well written; no loop holes, not rush at the end. Lastly, the themes of the story were intentional and thought-provoking.
This is an exciting graphic novel that flawlessly combines action with social observations. I was touched in the book when Chris had to consider his actions, words, and body language when he interacted with the mayor. It showed how he was distraught with anguish but couldn’t show his full range of emotions or he would be labeled as the “angry black man.” That’s real!!! This book was a great read and I can’t wait to share it with my kids.
This book is so awesome!!! I loved it!!! The storyline was executed perfectly along with dynamic artwork. I learned so much from this book. The author’s explanation of privilege was very powerful to me. This challenge my thinking on privilege because for the longest, I assumed that everyone had the same opportunity for success if they work hard for it. But I never considered that not everyone grew up like me. Good job Dr. Washington!!!
I was blown away by the depth of storytelling in Black Justice. Dr. Washington skillfully weaves together elements of action, drama, and social commentary to create a truly immersive reading experience. I absolutely love the part where Chris challenged Sensei Tanaka on his view of discrimination. I have tried so hard to explain to my parents the struggle of my black friends’ experience and this was perfect. Love the art and highly recommend this book to everyone.
This is a must-read-action-packed graphic novel. The story is captivating; I love stories that are based on a person’s search for justice. Not only does this book tell a good guys vs. bad guys story, but it touches on social issues that makes me really think about life privileges. Graphic novels are fun to read, but I have not had one that challenge my thinking on social issues like this book. I feel like I grew because of it. Wonderful book!!!
A thrilling ride from start to finish, Black Justice tackles complex issues with nuance and sensitivity. This graphic novel is a must-read for anyone looking for a story that entertains while also challenging the status quo. I really liked how the author showcase Black excellence in this book. My favorite character is Dr. Alicia Johnson, a prodigy scientist that you cannot help but fall in love with. Awesome story!!!
With its fast-paced plot and dynamic characters, Black Justice is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. This graphic novel is a triumph of storytelling. I enjoyed the complexities of the characters and the social issues that the author laid out.
An electrifying tale of one man's quest for justice in a world plagued by corruption. 'Black Justice' is a must-read for fans of action-packed graphic novels.
This is an exhilarating read!!! The privilege discussion was awesome!!! I may have more access to opportunity than my counterparts due to my zip code, family background, education level and so on…This does not mean I didn’t work hard for my success; it just means that my process was different. Simple, but powerful!! I can’t believe all this profound knowledge is inside a graphic novel! Amazing! This book would be an excellent first year reading for college students.
I couldn't put Black Justice down! A must-read for anyone who enjoys a good superhero story. This book has everything you need in a solid good superhero story. A good man that’s got everything going for him, and just like that it was taken away. His struggle to seek justice and revenge fill the pages with amazing action pack artwork. It was beautifully done.
An action-packed graphic novel that packs a powerful punch. I am a big fan of graphic novels and I have to say the artwork in this book is fantastic. The camera angles of each panel are very detailed and it shows how talented the artist is. The story is good and the artwork made this one of my favorite graphic novels.
I was captivated by Chris's journey in Black Justice. His struggle against corruption and injustice is both relatable and inspiring. Black Justice is the superhero I have been waiting for. A truly engaging read.
This book is a thought-provoking exploration of justice, morality, and the nature of heroism. It raises important questions while avoiding lecturing the reader. I have been looking for something like this to use with my students. Magnificent book, Dr. Washington!!!
This is a well-developed, well-written, and well-drawn graphic novel. With its compelling story and dynamic artwork, Black Justice is a graphic novel that fires on all cylinders. I loved the action in this book. I can't wait to see where the series goes next.
I must admit, I have not read a graphic novel in years but Black Justice: The Awakening, sparked my interest and I am glad it did! The book tackles injustice in our society through a colorful, thrilling and fun medium. If you love a great good versus evil story, Black Justice: The Awakening will not disappoint. It is a must read for anyone who longs to explore a new legendary superhero saga!
Immediately, I was drawn in by the main character, Dr. Chris Withers, not only because of his intellect, good looks and strong moral character but because I could see my husband, father and other Black men in him. He represents the strong Black man that is willing and able to fight for justice and protect Black women. Dr. David Washington developed his novel’s characters and their relationships perfectly. As a reader, I felt invested in the characters, as my heart raced, was broken and felt elation as I turned each page. I experienced so many emotions that I could not keep track!
The book also does an excellent job educating readers on societal privilege and victimization. As a society, we hear so many sad stories of the lost and missing, that we become numb to it and forget. I believe Black Justice: The Awakening, educates readers while they enjoy a great escape from reality. Through the graphic novel medium readers are enthralled into an alternate universe that mimics our world. The illustrations are amazing, allowing readers to truly feel the actions as it unfolds.
I highly recommend Dr. David Washington’s book, Black Justice: The Awakening, After reading his book, I cannot wait to learn more about the main characters, meet new characters and see what other injustices Dr. Chris Withers will tackle next. This is just the awakening of a new Black superhero and it is my hope that Dr. Washington will continue to create many more exhilarating adventures for Black Justice!
Black Justice is a graphic novel that will stay with you long after you turn the final page. The story centers on a brilliant Black professor and his journalist wife who are thrust into a fight for justice when they uncover a horrifying truth: a corrupt ring is trafficking young girls.
Frustrated by a legal system unwilling to help, the professor's wife takes matters into her own hands, embarking on a dangerous investigation. Meanwhile, the professor is presented with a unique opportunity – a collaboration with a scientist on the cutting edge of technology. This partnership might offer the means to confront the injustice they face, but at a steep price.
What elevates Black Justice is its stunning artwork. The vivid colors and dynamic illustrations bring the world and characters to life, immersing you in the heart of the story. But this graphic novel is more than just a thrilling ride. It tackles complex themes like privilege, particularly white privilege, in a way that is both insightful and thought-provoking.
The ending leaves you wanting more, cleverly setting the stage for a potential sequel. This makes Black Justice a perfect choice for both teens and adults. While the themes it explores can be sensitive, they are handled with maturity, making this a valuable addition to a high school English or sociology class library, sure to spark important discussions.
This graphic novel is excellent. I'm not a big fan of graphic novel nor comic book because I'm not into fantasy or sci-fi books. But this graphic novel has a great story with awesome artwork and a diverse representation of the characters. I am thrilled to see a black superhero's story that addresses sensitive topic such as privilege, race, poverty, and corruption into a story that is compelling and easy to digest. The author did a great job in depicting the struggles of his characters and that evil knows no bounds.
This is a great book that showcase Black excellence in a narrative where minorities community can find solace in seeing themselves as the main characters. No more watered-down sidekick roles. I thoroughly enjoy reading this book along with the art. I cannot wait for the sequel of Black Justice.

My teenager loves this graphic novel. He is more into manga but this graphic novel got his attention. It is a quick read and the story is very engaging with thought provoking topics. It addresses the minorities community social issues and challenges. The art graphics were beautiful and stayed consistent through the entire book. I gave it to my teenager to look at and he decided to read the whole book within an hour. He loved it. We both loved it. We talked about the Black Justice’s hero journey, the injustices in our society, the disparities in social economic classes, the cool costumes and whatever he wants to talk about. It was nice to bond with my son over this book. Highly recommended.

This is an exceptional graphic novel that delivers on every front. The story is a compelling, modern superhero narrative that seamlessly blends fast-paced action with a vital social conscience. Dr. Washington succeeds in creating a hero whose quest for justice feels both personal and urgently relevant, tackling themes of systemic corruption and inequity without ever sacrificing entertainment.
The critical acclaim from the IBPA awards to the Kirkus feature is completely warranted. The art style is engaging, and the foreword by Billy Blanks sets the perfect tone. "Black Defender" is more than just a great comic; it's a standout debut that redefines what a superhero story can be. Highly recommended for fans of the genre and anyone who appreciates stories with depth and purpose.
This is a fantastic graphic novel for Iron Man and Black Panther fans. I loved the themes of racism, grief, vengeance, and standing up for others who are less fortunate. I also enjoyed the conflict between traditional superheroes and technologically created superheroes. Moreover, the illustrations really enhanced the novel.
I read the entire novel on a two-hour flight and look forward to sharing it with my wife and kids when I get home. Black Justice is my new favorite superhero, and I hope to see an adaptation by Marvel in theaters someday.

I have been waiting for a graphic novel like this for a long time. I am so excited to see another successful black superhero. We need more positive representation and stories that represent minority voices. This book reminds me how often we as a society stand by the sideline and give comments or prayers to the less fortunate until “it” hits home. It is sad that something had to happen to bring us to action, but it’s what it is.
The author did a great job of developing the characters and storyline. It was not rushed and he dropped nuggets of wisdom throughout the book. I enjoyed this book along with the artwork. And the twist at the end was unexpected. It was an excellent read!
The book was gripping from the opening to its explosive end, the story kept me riveted from start to finish. I can tell the author took his time with developing his characters and being mindful of telling the story in a way that is easy to understand while being engaging. I have not seen this type of graphic novel for some time now. This was worth my time and I will read it again to really soak in the storyline and take another look at the artwork.
This was my first graphic novel so I didn’t know what to expect. I thought it would be filled with graphic fighting scenes and where the main characters are all searching for that special ‘relic’ to save the world theme, but I was delighted to find out it wasn’t. It is a romance action book with very good-looking people and an excellent story line. The book has depth with its social commentary. Black Justice is a graphic novel that demands to be read.
Reading Black Justice is like watching a fast paced, action packed movie and walking away with a deeper understanding of inequality and discrimination. The poignant storytelling combined with the cinematic portrayal of human emotions makes for an arresting read. It thrills, delights, and reminds me of that longing and hope for justice greater than ourselves. Dark yet wholesome, and entirely entertaining.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's been many years since I've read a comic book, so it was great to be taken back to my preteen years. This is a great comic book for both kids and adults. It brings social justice issues to the forefront and continues to raise awareness. The graphics are beautifully done. It also has the elements of mystery, a plot twist, and a cliffhanger. Pick this one up and read it. I think you'll enjoy it!
Black Defender is a powerful and thought-provoking graphic novel that blends superhero action with real world social justice themes. Dr. David Washington delivers a compelling story about a veteran-turned hero who confronts corruption, inequality, and personal transformation. With fast-paced storytelling, striking visuals, and a meaningful message, this debut breaks the mold of traditional superhero narratives. A must read for fans of socially conscious comics and action-packed drama.
The Book was exciting once the characters were known, and it was established what part they played in helping Black Justice bring down this group of criminals. It is a good read especially for adolescents. It touches how different groups of people are viewed due to their social status and environment; how justice is not always fair. I will definitely make sure that this book is read by many.
I was hooked from the very first page of Black Justice. I love the characters, the action, and especially the drawing. I didn’t think I was going to be able to finish it in one sitting, but I did. I needed to know what happened. The author spun a good story line with slowly introducing the characters, the plot, then the climax. I will definitely read another graphic novel from this author.
