A modern ROMEO & JULIET retelling featuring an epic sinner and the angel who'll stop at nothing to save him. Perfect for fans of NALINI SINGH and BECCA FITZPATRICK.

It was supposed to be a quick mission. The only thing quick about it was how rapidly I failed.

With only a month left to earn her missing feathers, nineteen-year-old Leigh embarks on a trip to Paris to meet her newest project, twenty-five-year-old Jarod Adler, leader of the Parisian Mafia and the worst kind of sinner . . . a Triple.

If Leigh can get Jarod to accomplish a single act of kindness, she stands to win 100 feathers, more than enough to complete her wings and ascend to Elysium, the land of angels.

What she doesn’t count on is Jarod's dark charm costing her feathers.

She’s dead set on saving him, and he’s dead set on destroying her.

Until he realizes destroying her wings is also destroying her heart.

A heart he longs to hear beat only for him.

I taught 9th grade English for over a decade. Romeo and Juliet is a standard part of freshman English lit classes. By the time I finally moved to another grade level, I had read and taught Shakespeare’s drama too many times. It isn’t romantic. There is no way that Shakespeare meant it to be. At least not in my opinion. The leads are children - too rash, too immature. He isn’t teaching about love when he has Romeo upset to the point of depression over his unrequited love for Rosalind one minute and then claiming true love for Juliet the next. The play is a warning more than a romantic tragedy.

So you can see that I was probably not too sure when I started Feather if I would like it or not. It is Romeo and Juliet but with angels, the mob, and Paris. Jarod and Leigh are definitely star-crossed. You can see that nothing will work in their favor. I did buy into the love story but thankfully they are allowed more time to fall in love in contrast to Romeo and Juliet having a matter of a few days. I did enjoy the angel lore. The hierarchy, rules, and setting were creative. I think the book is much longer than it needed to be. Some scenes felt repetitive or less purposeful than they should have been. The saving grace is the bit of hope at the end and the creativity of the world building. I think I would like to return to the world of angel wings for Celeste’s story.

"Neither human nor angel could eclipse this man whose magnificent darkness devoured even the brightest of light."

I'm usually not enthusiastic about books with Angels, but I am not exaggerating when I say that Feather is the best book featuring Angels that I've ever read about.

I finished this book with a heavy heart and it left me wanting more and more. It's a loose dark retelling of Romeo and Juliet so expect it to be devastatingly tragic.

To give a quick summary of this fantastic book, the story follows twenty-year-old Leigh, a Fletching, a young angel who hasn't completed her wings. Fletchings live in the guilds scattered around the human realm until they complete their wings and make their ascension to Elysium, the Land of Angels. Some may succeed and some may fail. Leigh has a month only to collect her remaining eighty one feathers to make her ascension. Fletchings gain feathers when they succeed in their missions which usually involve redeeming sinners and influencing them to do an act of kindness. Angels lose their feathers when they commit sins even a simple sin as lying. Triples are known to be the worst sinners whom worth the most feathers: one hundred. Leigh wishes to ascend to pursue her goal of becoming a Malakim "Soul Collector" or an Ishim "Ranker". She wishes to bring about change to the strict rules and system of Elysium. Persuaded by her friend, Leigh travels to Paris on a mission to redeem the most difficult sinner on top their list: Jarod Adler, a 25-year old leader of the Parisian Mafia, La Cour des Démons, The Court of Demons.

Thrust into the dark and corruptive life of Jarod Andler, Leigh's fate lies within his sins and her heart within his hands.

The romance between Leigh and Jarod was captivating, deliciously angsty and heart-wrenching. What would you expect from a love story of two star-crossed lovers? The blooming forbidden love between a Sinner and an Angel that sealed their tragic fates. The slow-burn chemistry between them is scorching.

"You are blinding me to the surrounding world, Feather. How am I expected to look anywhere else or see anything else when you are near?"

Leigh is a fantastic heroine, an Angel yet quite relatable in many ways which makes her unique. She has a set of great characteristics and also a set of flaws that marks her as a well-written character.

Jarod Adler may come off as a broody and unlikeable character at first but as he sheds each layer, you find a wounded man beneath it all. Jarod comes with his own complexities but when love seeps into his cracks, it unveils a fierce and tender soul.

The author gives the secondary characters their well-deserved moments of spotlight and I absolutely adore Celeste, Leigh's younger friend.

I was wholly immersed and could not put this book down, I devoured every page. Olivia Wildenstein's writing had a beautiful flow, it was as light as a breeze.

What truly blew my mind was the splendid world-building. Despite the modern setting, the author creates vivid visuals and sets such a contrast between the exhilarating quartz-glittering Celestial guilds and the dark and gloomy atmosphere of Paris. What truly took my breath away was the rich setting of Elysium which I won't delve into much but it truly is exquisite.

The author constructs a richly detailed and well established Angelic lore and system that sparked my intrigue. She wove the lore into the story in such a perfect and balanced way that it did not feel like an info-dump.

The next installment of Angels of Elysium is titled Celestial which will follow Celeste's story and I am so eager to get my hands on this sequel because I adore Celeste. The first book left us with a great cliffhanger and it sets up for book 2.

I definitely recommend this book if you are a fan of retellings and forbidden dark romance. I don't usually make comparisons but I feel that if you liked Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood then you will likely enjoy Feather (Angels of Elysium).

Please check the trigger warnings and note that this book is categorized as New Adult.

How can I review this book?! I can't even think past what happened long enough to gather my thoughts. As always while reading Olivia Wildenstein's books, I read the whole thing in a day with my heart in my mouth. I really have no clue how she manages to make me feel so invested and into her books when half the time the plots are so far away from my normal reads. For starters, I tend to avoid triangles and angsty reads. I read her previous trilogy and it had a triangle in it and I still loved it. I mean, that says it all right? Well, this one thankfully didn't have a triangle but the angst and the hurt! Oh, my poor heart wept at the end. The blurb warns you but man it still hurt.

description

But I guess I should start at the beginning. Leigh is an angel in training in a way. In order to gain all her feathers and ascend she must do good deeds by helping humans. Every good deed by her assigned human gives her feathers and every bad one she commits costs her one. She's only eighty one feathers away from ascending. And her newest project can earn her one hundred if he performs one act of kindness.

description

Too bad for Leigh, he is a Triple. The highest of sinners on the scale and happens to be a mafia boss. Will her good heart soften the hardened criminal? Or will he end up corrupting her beyond salvation? Or will they save each other? She wont give up on him no matter how many feathers she loses in the process.

description

I don't know if I should say more without spoiling the plot for you and I really don't want to do that.. I loved the angelic world OW created and the depth she went into for it. Every lineage, class, position and detail was marvellous to read. Loved being in a new world and the many facets to it. And I can't expand on that because spoilers. Sigh.. Olivia Wildenstein has written another winner for me and I'm gasping to know what happens next! If you love PNR with angels, a few twists, hot sexy times and as warned in the blurb difficult endings, you should definitely try this one.

2.5 stars.

The book started out well and then just descended into a bit of a dramatic mess that pretty much only worked for Shakespeare.

The MC's love was not believable - lust and infatuation, maybe - but don't try to pass that off as romance. After reading the book, if you look at the romance from a cynical point of view, from a view that it was just mere passion, the story actually seems better.

Me -> 🤡 <- rn

I'm feeling tricked because:
1. I was CONFIDENT that the sequel would continue with Jared and Miss Good girl.
2. I'm annoyed that I care because I rolled my eyes into OBLIVION for almost 500 pages

I gaslighted myself during this entire time into (desperately) trying to like Miss Doormat, because I felt excited over the premise. ALAS, I could've tolerated her and her 3 brain cells IF this story had been spread out during a reasonable time period but nah it took TWO WEEKS jkjkjkjkhghg and tbh I just have one word for that: STUPID.

Literally, I'll never call myself dramatic ever again.

Also at the same time, I kinda liked it and I'm appalled by that fact.

A fast-paced, entertaining romance.

The ending left me shocked. I missed the part about this being a modern-day Romeo and Juliet retelling but learning about that after reading this book I do agree with the comparison.

Since I've, by now, read and loved four other books written by Olivia, it's safe to say I adore her writing. I haven't yet encountered one of her books that doesn't read as fast as the others. Not only does that show her writing style, it also shows she knows how to keep the story going in a way that makes it near impossible to put the book down. That is something I love in books, in authors and.. well.. in reading. Nothing beats having a book you feel you're flying through!

People usually hang on because they're terrified of falling.

In this story, based on Romeo & Juliet, we follow Leigh, a Fletching on a mission to earn the last feathers she needs before becoming an angel. I absolutely adored her from the start. She felt human to me, in a way that felt right while knowing she isn't human at all. She's focused on doing good, on bettering her world and is willing to sacrifice herself for it. She also has doubts regarding her body and.. well.. Yes to "greater being" still feeling.
Then there's Jarod, five years older than Leigh and an absolute pain in the bum. He's a Triple, which means if Leigh can get him to do one good, selfless act, she earns 100 feathers - therefore a Triple. It's obvious from the start Leigh gets more and more under his skin. The way their relationship progresses had me hooked. It's a push-and-pull kind of thing, where they challenge one another. Something that had me intrigued for sure.

As for the story? Yes, angels! Yes, humans! Yes, intrigue and secrets and manipulation and back-stabbing and.. so much more, really. Like I said, I read this book in no time because I was absolutely hooked to everything happening and the characters themselves. Also the harder, possibly triggering topics were woven in nicely, without it feeling forced or having the intention of making the story more interesting.

Neither human nor angel could eclipse this man whose magnificent darkness devoured even the brightest of lights.

The one thing I didn't really agreed with was the amount of smut. Yes, it's new adult. Yes, there can definitely be some graphic sexual scenes but at one point I felt it was becoming too much and maybe even unnecessary. But, overall that didn't really influence my feelings towards this book because I enjoyed the story so much!

i honestly didnt catch on that this was a loose romeo and juliet retelling until i read the ending. omg. that ending!

this book has been so surprisingly enjoyable. its really entertaining with rootable characters and easy-going writing. its the kind of story you start reading and then look up at the clock and realise an entire hour has passed in a blink of an eye. it definitely deserves more attention than its currently getting because this checks all the boxes.

now, if only the sequel were already out, then i would be perfectly happy.

There was so much girl-on-girl hate, which I loathe to see or read. In addition to this, Feather lost most of her backbone () throughout the story. I kept waiting for the punchline where it was revealed how abusive Jarod actually was. It never came and soured the whole book. Feather rewarded Jarod in sexual favors multiple times; he would scream or curse at her; he threatened her; he sexually assaulted her by doing things with/to her without explicit or even implied consent. There were very few redeeming qualities about Jerkrod (think: long lashes, rich??!).

This book reads like that one millionaire Wattpad romance you wrote in 8th grade. In between murdering scenes and sex scenes are days filled with endless shopping (you HAVE to buy out the WHOLE boutique) or throat-slashing scenes. She was curvy, which I appreciated it, but somehow, everything was too small and thus fit her perfectly? It's worth noting that Jerkrod bodyshamed her multiple times, from talking about how it made sense that his bestie hit on her because her boobs were "spilling" out of her top or referencing her eating (which, even after explanation, still was inexcusable).

The ending was too convoluted and incredibly unnecessary. I have so much more I could say about this, but for the sake of my heartbearn, that's all.

There's a good premise and terrible execution. I don't often rate books as a 1 star because as an author and reader, I know how much hard work goes into writing books. I still think Olivia Wildenstein had a good concept. That being said, I should have DNF this sooner.

this was an excellent book and one that i really enjoyed! i wasn’t sure what to expect going into it, but i’m a huge fan of romeo and juliet retellings, and this one exceeded my expectations completely

feather centers around leigh, a fletching - aka young angel - who has not yet completed her wings. olivia wildenstein is a master at world-building and creates a setting that is richly detailed and never confusing. i found leigh to be an amazing main character with great characteristics - strong, unique, and determined. she is trying to complete her wings in order to ascend and takes on jarod adler’s case, which is a daunting task because of his reputation

jarod was an interesting character and i loved his relationship with leigh. the “too little time” trope is my favorite and it was perfect here. i also found the side characters to be very fleshed out and i really liked celeste (leigh’s best friend) whom the second novel is based around

i also thought that the pacing was done well and that leigh and jarod had great chemistry. my favorite part of the novel, however, was the writing. wildenstein’s writing style is very light and flows well. it also kept me entertained the entire time!

i highly recommend this book, especially for fans of sarah j maas, tragic love stories, and/or the fantasy genre. 5 stars! ⭐️

I really enjoyed reading this book.
Although at the end I started to get bored, the first half of the book and a cliffhanger at the end make me want to read the next one in the series. The main characters (and not only them) are very likeable. I liked the tenderness and love H and h developed for each other

HOLY MOLY. THIS BOOK, GUYS, THIS BOOK IS WHAT I’VE BEEN CRAVING FOR FOREVER. I’m always in search of a story that’ll break my heart cruelly, leaving me hopeless and helpless right there even long after finishing it. And I’m so, so, so surprised that I’ve found it. Seriously, people, my heart is not okay right now. And by now, I mean, 3 weeks after reading and embracing and getting over with that ending of this book. 😥

*DEEP BREATH*

All right, let me start with the basics and briefly run through what this book is about for you, ‘kay? To begin with, FEATHER is a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet, which truly impresses me with its intricate plot design and creativity of the characters as well as their experiences in the story. It all starts with Leigh, a Fletching, a.k.a. a pure-blood Angel youngling who still has to accomplish several missions of doing something good to earn feathers, in order to complete her full pair of wings. She has roughly 82 (or 84) feathers left before being eligible to ascend to Elysium, the sacred place Angels dwell in.

To fulfill Leigh’s dream to successfully ascend to Elysium, she picks a Triple, someone with the highest rank of misbehavior and evilness, mostly due to their wrong deeds and poor intentions. Thus, Leigh’s mission is simple: try to reform the Triple, a.k.a. the most notorious man on Earth, Jarod. If she succeeded in lowering his score, then she’d be granted 100 feathers, which will give her direct access to Elysium, and hopefully, marry the Archangel who’s “winged” her from the very beginning.

Even though Leigh has 14 months to achieve her goal, what she would never ever expect is that the harder she tries to save Jarod’s rotten soul, the more feathers she loses. As an Angel, she’s pretty much a saint. She can’t tell lies, feel anything close to jealousy or anything negative, and she certainly cannot experiment on such sinful desire as sexual pleasure before marriage. However, when she’s spending time with Jarod, she soon realizes that nothing is impossible, and that what she’s been taught in the guild may be all wrong.

To my amazement, this book turns out much more intriguing than its synopsis sounds. The writing style is utterly refreshing to me, and I absolutely adore the French references and phrases in this book considering that the majority of the story takes place in Paris. Jarod is such an elegant Parisian, too. *wink* What makes me fall in love with everything is the characters, main and supporting ones alike. Leigh and Jarod are undoubtedly one of my top favorite OTPs; Archangel Asher and Leigh’s younger best friend, Celeste, are whom I’d love to befriend with. The entire Angelic Politics and hierarchy entice me from the first page till the end.

As a huge paranormal romance lover, I’ve got to say FEATHER is a rather successful story in this genre. It’s not easy for such a seemingly simple story to have so many delicate details of protagonists, plot twists, and difficult endings all seamlessly woven together, shifting the direction of the entire novel into this hypnotizingly magical realm of Elysium-on-Earth. Besides, this book also reminds me of a Spanish TV series I adore called Ángel o demonio, which I believe features many levels of Angels and Demons from old times.

Despite the fact that the very ending of Leigh and Jarod’s story shatters my heart into a million pieces and kills me completely, I still love this book tremendously for that there’s a light even in the ultimate darkness. What’s more, the author kind of guarantees us that there’ll be a much more deserving HEA for these beloved characters, so I’m so down for whatever Olivia has in store for the readers. ❤

All in all, FEATHER is not only an enjoyable read for me, it’s also an unforgettable retelling of Romeo and Juliet that I’m sure YOU’LL ALL LOVE IT AS MUCH AS I DO when you get the chance to pick it up. Needless to say, I HIGHLY, STRONGLY recommend this book to everyone because seriously, guys, there’s no reason not to give Olivia’s new book a shot!!! I mean, how can you possibly turn down a sexy, angelic French man?!!! Just kidding, now please do yourself a favor and head straight to Amazon to preorder your copy of FEATHER! Its sequel, CELESTIAL, is set to be published in 2021.

me while reading: Wow this is melodramatic.

me two seconds later: Oh yeah, this is a Romeo and Juliet retelling lol.

I really enjoyed the premise of this! Mafia meets Angel. It's good girl/bad boy but the bad boy isn't a bad boy. He's just morally gray and ~traumatized~ (aka my fave).

The Angel lore, system, hierarchy was all so freaking neat.

I did feel it was a touch repetitive and a smidge too long while the FMC near the end lacked tact, but this was still quite enjoyable!

“I would ask if all angels are as beautiful as you are, but I’ve seen them, and fuck if any hold a single feather to you.”

Okay, wow. This book was such an emotional roller coaster. I knew from the beginning that this story was not going to get a happy ending but man that didn’t prevent me from getting attached to these wonderful characters.

First off, I really loved Leigh’s character. I like how soft and determined she was. I really appreciate her kind and caring heart. She stood her ground and didn’t let anyone tell her what to do or believe in. Her relationship with Celeste was so adorable. The sister bonding warmed my heard and I was anxious to see how this story will turn out.

I also loved meeting Jarod and his tortuous and sad backstory. His banter with Leigh was amazing. The nickname he gave her?!😂 I absolutely loved it. I adored how their relationship evolved into this true passionate love. I was rooting for them even though I knew that I would get my heart broken for wishing an alternate ending🥲

This story was filled with action and an amazing world-building but I still have a feeling that we will get so much answers in the sequel. The setting was amazing. They were some twists in this book that were predictable but that didn’t make it less enjoyable. It’s a fast-paced Romeo & Juliet love story with angels and wings!

An absolutely heartbreaking ending that made me shed some tears. I really wanted them to be happy and I can’t imagine the pain the author had to go through writing this book😂🥲I’m anxiously waiting for the sequel to come out because I really want to see how Celeste will react to the news😭♥️

Just go pick this book ASAP!

Trigger Warning: no happy ending.

I could not recommend a book more. The Angel world building was amazing. Leigh was such a great lead character who sees the best in everyone and wants to better the rules for the angels. Taking on Jerod to earn her feathers could destroy her instead of saving her, yet she never gives up on him. Jerod. Oh Jerod. I fell in love with everything about him. He is amazing. I loved their banter and seeing their relationship grow. I LOVED the spicy scenes. The ending wrecked me. This book is such a great love story.

I'm not into angels normally and I tend to avoid everything God related but when a friend recommended Feather to me I had to read it and I don't regret it.

I admit that the world or dynamic of the angels wasn't completely clear at the beginning but it had my attention since I found out the angel is the female main character and not the male as it's usually done.

I loved Leigh and her naive and sweet self. I felt so close her but maybe it's because we share a sweet tooth and the love for romance novels😂
Jarod is the typical black-haired and morally gray hero aka my favorite type which explains why I fell hard for him( can't say I wasn't warned).
Those two separated are amazing but together? They're explosive!

The ending was gut wrenching. It took me completely off guard, I was expecting it at all and I can't say that liked it or I'm satisfied with it because... why? I'm devastated.

Stunning world-building, an original plot, well-developed characters, and steamy, swoony romance make this an unputdownable read. Olivia brought her A-game for this series, and it shows!

I remember why I hated Romeo and Juliet so you know the ending 🙂
So I really liked the first part of this book, but about halfway through I turned a little confused
The story was very different from anything that I have ever read. My problem with this book was the nativity of Leigh. I like smart and fierce heroine. She was so consumed with Jarod that she forego everything including her own wellbeing, hate her weakness, DNF’d after the FMC told the MMC she loved him after 8 days of knowing him,
This is very Romeo and Juliet. Barely know each other over the span of days, but then love each other more than life itself. First half was a fast read, the rest was still not the slowest read ever, so I want, to DNF but I love the world building and the angel world
.
we have Angels and Sinners. Leigh is a young angel who is still earning all her feathers for her wings. To earn these feathers she must help sinners reform their ways. In order to finish her wings with one last sinner, a sinner with the highest rank of 100.
