I don’t know a life beyond how I’m perceived. After a devastating divorce, it looked like I never would.
Can a hockey fight change your life?
I may not understand my attraction to Sven Holmer, but I can tell you my obsession with kissing him started in the middle of a fight. When we met again, the conversation was easy, the banter effortless. Once stolen glances gave way to secret touches, I was more confused than ever. How the hell am I supposed to handle it when everything I’ve always believed about myself no longer fits?
Things are great… until they aren’t.
Our connection deepens with every minute we spend together, but like me, Sven is no stranger to betrayal and heartache. Between my stubbornness, his reservations, and the start of a new season, how can we survive months apart?
When tragedy strikes, all bets are off. I just hope it’s not too late.
Broken Ice, Mended Hearts features two thirty-something hockey players hardened by heartbreak. This compelling, angsty book includes a bisexual awakening, hurt/comfort, found family, first times, high heat, and a hard-earned HEA. Though it is part of the Bethesda Barracudas Hockey series, it can be read as a standalone.
it wasn’t awful! like i didn’t hate it; it just wasn’t my book and that’s okay!! i found myself having trouble rooting for pip & sven. their chemistry wasn’t really believable to me idk
it was well-written, though! i also love a hard earned hea and pip & sven definitely fought hard to make their relationship work which i enjoyed!
Gags and Sven deserved the happy ending they got after everything they’ve been through. The way both of them mended each other’s heart and open up to each other was beautiful.Their journey was not easy but it was still worth it.Sven was patient with Gags and I was so happy when Gags finally made up his mind and decided Sven was it for him.Their Banter was top tier, the spicy scenes were good and the fact that Sven was the only person allowed to call Gags by his Nickname was so cute.I love the book🫶🏽.
[ ] Hockey Romance - [ ] Forced Proximity - [ ] Hurt Comfort - [ ] Friends with benefits to lovers - [ ] Bi-Awakening - [ ] Long distance relationship - [ ] Found family - [ ] First time - [ ] Angst - [ ] Happy ending - [ ] Gay Barracudas Club.
Their first encounter was where Gags beat the shit out of Sven on ice. Gags was confused by what he felt at that moment. Months later they meet again. The scenery is a restaurant, they connect way better this time.
Pierre aka Gags aka … comes from a divorce, his wife cheated on him, and it was all for his money. Sven knows all about cheating partners. Sven is gay and feels something coming from Gags, an interest? No way, he’s straight isn’t he?
Sven just arrived in DC, Gags offered to show him around. Yes, they both feel it, there’s a strong connection. They could help each other out, to get off and rid of some tension, without strings of course! Gags is a rookie with gay things, he wants to explore. Sven can’t handle more hurt than he has already been through, maybe hookups with Gags aren’t that good for him. Jeez, their first encounter was already hot AF, honest and fun.
“ I didn’t have to give him the power to destroy me emotionally.”
Did I tell you how hot they are together? Friends with benefits and nothing more! Uh-huh! Could they even survive a long-distance relationship? Sven’s feelings are growing, and Gags' feelings aren’t less, they are all over the place. My heart, stop you guys!
So far so good, until it wasn’t. Enormously wasn’t! I won’t spoil it, read it yourself!
It was a wonderful read, with two sensitive mature men, vulnerable, honest, and lovable. How they desperately try to manage around their jobs and relationships made me emotional. The hockey knowledge is amazing. I love it when we can watch brains work in overdrive, mouth running before thinking, how they open their vulnerable hearts, the self-reflections, it was all amazingly done. Overall an emotional story that made me laugh and cry, it felt all genuine, a joy to read!
Audio update Well, reading this book was a journey now. Listening to this was a whole new experience. Be ready to feel all the feels and experience all the emotions of this journey. Nick J Russo does an exceptional job of making an already amazing book even better.
Well, when Ryan & Josh say this will be an angsty hard earned hea they aren't joking. What starts with a fight on the ice between two players turns into something so much more. Pip, Gags to everyone else, has never felt that spark of love, so has a hard time really understanding what it is. Enter Sven, who will keep him on his toes and challenge his every step of the way. These two have so many disagreements just because both don't know how to quite express themselves right. With the encouragement of the Baracudas and their beautiful found family, they finally get it right. When something unimaginable happens that threatens all that is dear to Sven, Pip is able to open up and be real and let his heart not his brain lead the way. The cameos are all top notch, catching us up with all past couples, including Eckie and Jack (back to Center, Mohegan U)! These men have all formed an unbreakable bond that even once they move on from hockey, they will always have each other. So yes, it's a rough ride, but it will be worth the tears.
I have read and loved all of the Bethesda Barracudas series by these authors and this one has the angst that they promised in spades. I’ve been waiting for Gags’ story and this certainly did not disappoint. I was so taken with how deep and raw the internal dialogue was between Gags (Pip) and Sven and could totally understand Sven and his wish for settling down but being scared to commit to Pip. Pip had previously divorced from his wife after having his heart broken and was was agonising over not only letting someone in again but that someone being a man. It was brilliant writing to be able to convey those feelings and have me understand and appreciate both sides. The building of their friendship and their chirping was awesome to read not to mention their sizzling chemistry🔥 Then when tragedy struck and we were witnessing true fear and devastation we saw the amazing friends that we have come to know and love rally round for support. I have to mention the description of the hockey action was awesome and I (a newbie) was able to follow and enjoy. A terrific story and great addition to the excellent series. It really deserves more than ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Finally!!!! I’ve been waiting for Gagne’s story ever since I finished Ice Devils last year. I thought it would be a long shot, but I got my wish.
Pierre “Pip” Gagne has a problem with putting his skate in his mouth. When we first met him, he was the typical jock, who can’t see beyond his own preconceived notions of what it means to be a man. Watching him grow throughout the series led him to become one of my favorite characters. He wasn’t meant to live in the background, he was meant to be center ice.
Taylor & Harwood write the best meet cutes especially in this series. What happens when 2 D-Men get into a fight on the ice? One moment sets off a chain reaction neither is ready for.
Sven is such a pure soul. Although he is protective of his heart, he can’t help but let Pip in. He’s scared, but he sees in Pip everything he’s ever wanted. The only problem is Sven is a bit insecure & it causes him to react yet not acknowledge. He doesn’t want to lose Pip in any way shape or form so he won’t ask for more.
Both of these characters are a bit lost. Their friendship is forged out of proximity & necessity. The only problem is, friendship isn’t the only thing they want. Gag’s is a bit more lost than Sven. He doesn’t truly know who he is or who he wants to be.
This book is by far the most emotional of the series for me. I thought I was prepared for what was coming, I was very wrong.
I loved this book so much, with all the details woven through the story, watching them navigate their friendship and seeing it blossom into more.
It is the sixth book of the saga, (I always start the series wrong). It's been a long time since I've read a romance book with field hockey in the background (a sport I know nothing about and everything they tell me I have to believe). It is well written. It is the first book I have read by the authors.
Gags is a hockey player, recently divorced who doesn't know how to deal much with loneliness, he has always thought that his future is next to a woman, children and a white picket fence. Sven appears in his life, another hockey player, because they have the same manager, and this takes a 180 º turn.
I do want to read the rest of the series, because characters from the previous books appear, which I know a little about, but I would like to read their stories.
Sven and Pierre are rival hockey players. They first realize they’re attracted to each other during a fight on the ice, where they almost kissed before the refs pulled Pierre off Sven. They meet again during dinner at their shared agent’s house, who suggests Pierre show Sven around since he just got traded to the other DC-area hockey team. Pierre plays for the Bethesda Barracudas and Sven will now be playing for the Washington Congressmen.
Sven is openly gay, but Pierre has always assumed he was straight. However, he can't deny how attracted he is to Sven. They start off as friends, but soon add benefits to their friendship. They quickly become addicted to each other over the summer they spend together. As the season draws near, Pierre asks Sven to move in with him, not wanting to spend any more time apart than they have to. It isn't long after that before both men admit that they’re in love.
"Broken Ice, Mended Hearts" tells the story of two men recovering from broken hearts, who never meant to fall in love. Pierre had never considered himself attracted to men, and Sven was wary of falling for a straight guy. Despite their initial reservations, their chemistry was undeniable, and their romance was both heartwarming and passionate. The steamy scenes were incredibly well-written, adding an extra layer of sizzle to the story. I can honestly say that it's a five-star read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I have a book hangover, in the best possible way. I finished this book a few days ago, and Gags and Sven have settled in my heart with no intention of leaving anytime soon.
Broken Ice, Mended Hearts by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood is the sixth book in the Bethesda Barracudas Hockey series. I’ve enjoyed all the previous books in the series, and without a doubt, this is my new favourite. We’d had glimpses of Gags in the past books and finally having his story has been worth the wait.
Ryan and Josh have mastered another powerful and emotionally charged hockey romance. I don’t know where to begin. It’s been a long time since a book made me feel like this. I can’t describe how I feel after all the emotions that have been stirred up in me by reading this book. I’ve laughed at their banter, I’ve suffered and cried because of their vulnerabilities, and I’ve felt my heart constrict with anguish at what they had to face. I didn’t expect it to be so angsty, but I loved it.
From the moment Pip (Gags) and Sven clash on the ice, sparks fly in more ways than one. We can see them navigate the complexities of love, identity, and resilience in an excellent crafted story of their journey. Their relationship is not without its challenges, as both men grapple with past heartbreaks and insecurities. Yet, it’s the unwavering support of the Barracudas and their found family that provides a beacon of hope amidst the turmoil.
Ryan and Josh excel in character development, allowing readers to witness the growth and evolution of Pip and Sven as they navigate the tumultuous waters of love. The banter between the two is both endearing and electric, igniting a fiery chemistry that leaps off the page.
What sets this book apart is its ability to evoke a wide range of emotions, from heart-wrenching sorrow to heartwarming joy. Ryan and Josh don’t shy away from tackling tough subjects, and it’s this raw honesty that makes Broken Ice, Mended Hearts a truly unforgettable read.
Whether you’re a fan of hockey romance or simply love a good love story, this book is sure to capture your heart. With its compelling characters, engaging plot, and poignant themes, Broken Ice, Mended Hearts is a literary masterpiece that deserves a spot on every romance reader’s bookshelf.
I received an ARC from the authors for free, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
Every time I read one of these books I am emotionally wrecked. The sparks between Gags and Sven are off the charts and the emotional tension is so overwhelming that I couldn’t help but feel like I was transported into the story. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Absolutely fantastic
This book was an emotional rollercoaster, in a good way. I needed a lot of patience especially with Gags, but the good parts made it worthy and made the journey make sense.
When Sven and Gags meet they are both emotionally broken and disheartened, coming from troubled break ups. Sven would have needed a lot of explicit love and reassurance but Gags is not able to offer any of that and plus he's convinced the love of his life will be a woman.
All that almost breaks them but the way they get through it makes them very strong and shows how they're made for each other.
Also, I hadn't read hockey romance for a while and I forgot how heartbreaking some sport tropes are 😭
A little more angsty than the other books in this series, but oh, so worth it! The chemistry between Gags and Sven is electric - even when they're on opposite sides of a fight! I love how they respond to each other and how they also hold back as things heat up...
You can definitely tell that they're working towards something, but that they don't have the words or the experience to know what that is... and being along for the ride is so much fun!
It was great to see cameos from others in the series and to watch these two men get their HEA!
Broken Ice Mended Hearts by Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood is another awesome book in the Bethesda Barracudas series. Gags & Sven try to be friends with benefits but they just can't help falling for one another. Both of them on the rebound from serious relationships & having opposite travel schedules causes all kinds of conflict. The story is sometimes romantic, sometimes steamy. There's plenty of humor and a bit of angst, with a plethora of HEA! Romance - ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Steam - 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Humor - 🤣🤣🤣 Angst - 😭😭😭😭 Writing - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I loved this book, Both main characters were complex. Pip was discovering that he wasn't who he thought he was and Sven was learning to not jump too far ahead of himself. The writing made me want to cry at times and yell at them at other times. Loved all the support from the supporting characters. I struggled to put this book down as I needed to know the outcome.
Prepare to fall in love! Having read all the books in the Bethesda Barracudas Hockey series I have been anxiously awaiting Gags’s story. This book did not disappoint! I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this book! The characters; Gags and Sven are complex and well-developed. They’ve both been through heartache and betrayal and you can feel their emotions and heartache. You don’t want to miss this powerfully angsty, story, with its irresistible characters, captivating plot, and beautiful HEA. This book deserves more than five stars!
Broken Ice, Mended Hearts is the 6th book in the Bethesda Barracudas series. It tells the story of Gags who we met in the previous books. He had a few things to work out in the previous books when it came to his teammates coming out but he worked through them and became their best friend. Since we saw him in the last book, he has been married and divorced and is now a bit jaded when it comes to love and relationships. We meet a new character named Sven who is also jaded when it comes to love and relationships. They connect on the ice during a fight which is an interesting meet cute and subsequently spend the off season together at the recommendation of their agent. They definitely had things to work through both individually and collectively. The blurb mentions that it is a hard won HEA and that is accurate. There are times where I wanted to shake both of them to do better when it comes to their communication, but they got it together eventually. I have read all the books in the series and they really are unique in their storytelling. Ryan and Joshua created an immersive world of characters that have each gone through their journeys and become stronger because of their struggles. Gags and Sven are no exception. Though you do not have to read the previous books to understand this story, it does make the experience richer. I was soo happy to see and hear from and about the previous characters in the other books, even from their crossover series Mohegan U! I'm happy to know that they are still going strong. I didn't want the story to end and I am excited to see where we go from here. I've actually learned more about hockey from reading these books than from watching the game. This story will stay with me for a long time to come just like the others.
At first, I really struggled to connect with Gagne (aka Gags, aka Pip). He was going through a lot and needed time to come to terms with some truths about himself. His journey wasn't an easy one and he really put Sven through the ringer. Sven was so patient with him despite how his Pip hurt him at times. Once he came to terms with who he is and what he wanted, he was all in and so devoted to Sven.
Every time these two seemed to find an even keel, a new obstacle or challenge would pop up. They had to learn a lot about themselves and each other on their way to their HEA, but they put in the work and did what they needed to do.
What I love most about this book and the way these authors write their characters is that they seem like real people. I could easily see this story playing out IRL and the obstacles these two faced are so relatable. They had honest reactions and disagreements, nothing seemed to be put in to the story to make it over the top or extra angsty. Sven and Gags were put through the ringer more than once. I laughed, I cried, I swooned. Then I went through the full range of emotions all over again.
This book is part of an established series and has crossover with other books, but it can be read as a standalone. However, you'll get the most out of the cameos by the side characters if you read their stories too!
Broken Ice Mended Hearts is hockey romance with a twist. I have always loved Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood’s sweet characters and uplifting stories but this one takes an angsty turn that I absolutely loved. In past books we have had glimpses of Gags spouting homophobic remarks then slipping into his room late at night with a man. So I knew there was a story waiting to be told and ohhh was it worth the wait! When a hockey fight between the two MC’s sparks unexpected feelings of attraction, both men are understandably confused. Sven is gay but Gags has only ever pictured himself settling down with a woman. One man recently divorced, one man coming off a bad break up—both feeling damaged and insecure—what could possibly go wrong? The character development in this book is very strong, taking the reader through a veritable storm of emotion and growth as both men struggle with communication, long distance and trust. It takes a near tragedy to make Gags come to terms with the depth of his feelings for Sven. I cried for them, laughed at their chirps, and nearly went up in flames from the intense heat between them! I wish I could read it all over again for the first time, it was just that good! Why aren’t there more than five stars for the really special books?? This one would certainly deserve them!
Another great story in this hockey series from Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood. In Broken Ice, Mended Hearts we have two guys on opposite teams, who have both ended relationships/marriage in the last year because of cheating, and one is in for a bi-awakening. Sven hasn't long moved to Washington to play for the Commanders and Gags is put forward to show him round the city, save them from both being alone over the off season. What neither is ready for is the instant attraction and chemistry that they share, especially Gags as he's identified as straight so far. Spending a lot of time together allows them to grow closer and that feels like a natural progression for their relationship however, it's not without it bumps as Gags gets used to being with a man and both have to learn to trust in the other after how their previous relationships ended. They do have a lot of laughs with each other, chirping the way hockey players do but also share a lot of the same interests which helps in doing things they enjoy together. The story isn't without its emotional lows with life for two professional hockey players keeping them apart and, it being a newish relationship, communication is key which sometimes has to be learnt the hard way. My heart really went out to Gags with what he goes through but the group of people that he is surrounded by stood strong for him. One of my favourite things in this book is the amazing group of men that have come together through the team, new relationships and friendships, and how they are all there for each other, for comedy value, a listening ear or to egg on in the ice, it's a real found family dynamic. A wonderful romance well told by this great author duo. You're always guaranteed with an entertaining read that may just give your heart a rush of highs and lows too. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
This is book 6 in the Bethesda Barracudas Hockey series and completes the series. It winds up superbly, with all the guys together. I really loved the dynamic of these two men. It starts off complicated, Gags is straight (ish) but something happened when he met Sven's blue eyes. After spending a lot of time together, they can't resist one another. We are treated to really hot intimate scenes that didn't skimp at all. Everything is going swimmingly, until, hockey season starts and life becomes difficult. Apparently, absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it lacks intimacy and these boys are starved of it. They are delirious from missing each other and petty arguments start. It takes an almighty situation to bring them together and it is tear inducing. My heart broke for them so much. Alas, this is a romance so we know there is a happy ending and it was a beautiful ending too. A great book to round off the series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wow, Josh and Ryan hit it out of the park again. Pip and Sven’s stories of heartbreak and healing through first friendship and then love is powerful. The authors don’t leave us to wonder about the life of their characters they give us full development and depth. These characters have lives, pain, love, friendships, and careers that are built in and explored throughout the book. They give us a wonderful group of characters from previous books that are supportive and helpful to our main characters. But you don’t have to have read the other books to love this one. The relationship of Pip and Sven is fraught with the pain and passion that all relationships face, and you can feel the author’s love through pages of their book.
One Hockey Fight, Two Unexpected Hearts First Ryan and Josh wrote another heart stopping, crying grab your tissues swoon worthy romance. Gags and Sven had chemistry from the get go. Just didn't want to admit it,as these two attempt to guide their way back into life after horrible break ups. They swear off dating and social lives and guard their hearts at all cost. Until one dinner with a mutual friend , one summer and a budding friendship that became more than they expected . Gags Truly two hearts one complex but a big teddy bear on the inside. He had no idea he could be loved for himself. Sven One emotional and giving and the most understanding soul I have ever met. He never believed he could find love again. Gags and Sven Holy WOW ! Grab your copy and your tissues.
As one who loves hockey and loves reading hockey stories this book is truly amazing. It brought out feelings at every turn. From the first page through the last I was in thralled. The two characters Sven and Gags were well written. Two hockey players, both from different teams, attracted to each other. Gags having the realization that he wants more with Sven and Sven just being a sweeter and giving Gags the time he needs. Relationships are hard but when both are willing to fight for what they want and work through their insecurities and weaknesses it becomes the most beautiful thing. And Ryan and Josh showed all of it. The attraction, the hurt, the pain, the sadness, the struggles through difficult times. But most importantly they showed the Love between, not just two hockey players, but two men. This definitely deserves five stars ⭐️. 💜
Ever since being introduced to "Gags," I have been hoping for his story, and this book fulfilled all my hopes and expectations. The plot was realistic while at the same time having a summer romance fling vibe. What really drove this book was the depiction of the MC's relationships.Gags' and Svens relationship went through its ups and downs but remained steadfast and true to the characters. They experienced growth and were put to the test several times and made it through. I loved how the MC's friendships were also part of the story, taking some of the focus off of the MCs. It was nice to see Sven interact with his friends as well as Gags and how these relationships were all interconnected. It gave found family and love feels. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend not passing it up.
I am a sports romance fanatic. Undoubtedly Hockey especially is my jam! This book was an absolutely captivating read! I read it one sitting. It’s Beyond fantastic.
I definitely had heart pangs and I shed tears. But I also was smiling a lot over some of the clever chirps. Gags and Sven’s chemistry was palpable, so gorgeous. They were incredibly hot together! Love the steam! I was very invested in them getting their HEA. The supporting characters added to the fabulousness of the story.
This is absolutely one of my favorite books so far in 2024. I need more in this series.
Ryan and Josh have always been go to authors for me, but with this book they have become even better. With more spice and angst then typical, the story is paced well and the relationship between the main characters is beautifully complex and develops at a great pace. Complimenting the main characters story is the relationship between them and their friends/teammates and their unwavering support through good and tough times. Ryan and Josh write perfect hockey romance and this book is one of the best I've read.
My favourite book of Ryan and Joshua's is Fire in the Ice and although I've liked other book's of theirs I've not loved another until this one.
I loved Gags and Sven, they grew so much as people and as a couple throughout this book, especially Gags who was teaching himself the right and wrong way to think.
This was easily one of my best reads so far this year, and one of their best books, it brought out all my emotions, a complete emotional roller coaster, it was a beautiful read.
I'm going to miss my Barracudas!
5*
I received an ARC and am happily giving my honest review.
Ryan & Josh never disappoint me. This book is heart wrenching and heart warming. I laughed, I cried and I cheered for Gags and Sven. I love how Ryan and Josh capture their characters and they make you feel like you are there apart of the characters story. The angst and the emotion definitely had me on a roller coaster I didn’t want to get off of. Give me more Barracudas please. I loved seeing all the other characters but most of all I loved getting to know Gags and Sven. This book is very well written and I couldn’t put it down! Definitely a must read!
The book is a delightful account of the love story between two hockey players, Pierre Gagnè and Sven Holmes. While fighting on the ice rink is considered a regular occurrence, the authors highlight the contrast between that and the heart-racing sensation that comes with a touch, almost a kiss.
The book is written exceptionally well, and the authors do an excellent job of narrating the story of how Gagnè, affectionately called "Gags," and Sven overcame several challenges to be with each other. The book is filled with plenty of passion and angst, which adds to its charm.
The sheer determination and courage that these two men exhibit to nourish their love and eventually profess their feelings make the book a compelling read. Overall, the book is a beautiful portrayal of how love can conquer all, and it deserves more than just five stars.
