After years of mourning, Princess Kyra is stunned after discovering her brother Deric alive—and leading the rebellion against their parents, the King and Queen of Calmora. With each turn, Kyra grapples with new allies and foes. But she must wear the mask of a dutiful princess to win the political games fate has dealt her.
Sometimes, I dream of a family. I know they aren’t real, but dreaming of them makes my nights less lonely.
Meanwhile, in a world of monotony and despair, Twila's life is devoid of color. For a decade, she has been trapped behind gray walls, eating gray food, and cowering away from her masked captors. Her days are punctuated by painful treatments and impossible tests, with only brief moments of respite.
As Kyra navigates the treacherous paths of politics and power, Twila searches for light in the darkest of places. But even in the midst of darkness and despair, it is hope that will bring these two girls closer together than they could have ever dreamed possible.
Daughter of Darkness is book two of Project Phoenix, a YA fantasy series.
Sophia Wachtel has done it again. Daughter of Darkness is a continuation of her Project Pheonix series and my goodness was it exciting! As princess Kyra battles within herself to determine her loyalties (whether with the rebellion or her parents) she unveils a secret project that has been going on for a decade involving missing children and political power. Will she be able to stop her father's scheming? Or is it the rebellion she should be fearing? The world that Sophia has created is unlike anything else I've ever read or imagined. From the beautiful Sky Kingdom in the clouds to Groundhaven far below, it's a world ruled by hierarchy. Sophia's characters are relatable and interesting. From young and conflicted Kyra, to hurting and kindhearted Click, to the many fun and redneck characters in The Nest, they all play a role in this story and make it come to life. I cannot wait to see where book three will take these characters and the plot. Until then, give book one and two a read. :)
These books really know how to gag me✨️ First of all, we love a complicated protagonist!!! Kyra is dealing with more than the typical ya good vs evil. She really doesnt know who is telling her the truth and is very torn between who she wants to be and who she has been raised to be. Once again, Kyra is a very rational thinker who always makes the best decisions in her circumstances. This looking for the best of both worlds is where flaws are born and boy this plot was all about Kyra and her character development for better or worse. (It's written in a way that really makes me think about my own life and how I interact with the world.) BUT THE END???????? Kyra's moral battle perfectly aligning with the ultimatum from her dad (in non spoiler terms) went crazyyyyyyyyy. The entire last quarter of the book was a wild ride!!!!
Daughter of Darkness picks up where book 1 ended. Kyra, back at the castle, tries to get on her father's good side, but finds herself torn between the crown and the rebels. She struggles with which side is right. In the end the need to choose is forced on her. And there is no good choice. This story is well thought out and leaves one wanting the next book soon.
