Lick: -to pass the tongue over the surface of, as to moisten, stroke, taste, or eat; -a sudden hard blow; -to get the better of; to defeat; to conquer; -slang: to commit robbery.
Jazmine Rice is overweight and she has an abusive boyfriend.
Angel Black just got out of prison. She’s tired of her former lifestyle and just wants to start from scratch.
Jazmine and Angel are from two different walks of life, but their paths are very similar. When their worlds collide, Jazmine and Angel must decide whether they want to continue walking alone or if they’d rather have someone walking by her side.
Lick by Shonda is a book I've wanted to read for a while, and I'm glad I did. The story follows Jazmine Rice, a woman lingering in an abusive relationship. When she finally moves to attend college, she's thinks she's found a safe space to heal from the abuse she endured as a young woman.
Angel, a newly released inmate, wants to make a new start, as well. Realizing that freedom is precious, she leaves behind her old life, keeps her head on straight and decides to make a fresh start at college - and meets Jazmine, and things go from there.
I found Lick, told from multiple viewpoints that lends itself well for this story, heartbreaking on many levels. To see what Jazmine endured, even with her support system in place at a school, just did something to me. I rooted for her, even through my frustration.
I couldn't put my kindle down. Every chapter kept me intrigued. From beginning to end I was all in. The characters were interesting and the story line, wow. I would definitely recommend this book to family and friends. I'm glad that everything worked out for all of the ladies involved.
This book went really deep into the life of several people around someone who is being abused and also how many people hide their abuse, it's sad but awareness is the key 🗝️ and them knowing someone is beside them helps.
I enjoyed the characters and the friendship they shared with each other. I was very glad that jasmine learned to walk. Abuse happens to often and goes so under reported.
I just want to say Ms. Shonda that you did it again. This id really touching and complex story that drew me in from the start. The only drawbacks would be i would have loved to have read more about the romance between angel and jasmine(maybe a second book just about them?) Also i think the title and cover art detract from the novel. It makes it seem like an erotic and hood story which is totally not. Keep doing what you're doing cause i love it.
