Rate this book
The Eastern Shore of Maryland, 1857

Naomi Banks, mistress of Hickory Hill, is a pillar of society, respected by all, envied by many. But she has a secret, never revealed. She killed her first husband, twenty-five years before. And when a ghost from her past invades the present, her entire existence is threatened, forcing a battle she never expected to fight.

Set on a large plantation on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, The Secrets of Hickory Hill, features a complex cast of Naomi’s daughter Annabelle and the two men who court her—shipbuilder Adrian Reed and politician Artemis Wentworth, the slaves of Hickory Hill—Phoebe, Coffey Green, and Billy Giles—Amish families who shelter runaways—Jacob Yoder and Samuel Zook, and the lawmen who chase them, Sheriff Dodd and slavecatcher Amos Quigg. And then there’s Zeb Payne, the man who knows Naomi’s secret.

The Secrets of Hickory Hill is a sprawling epic of the Antebellum South, laced with murder, intrigue, deceit, and disaster.

1832, Naomi and her slave, Phoebe, leave the island of St. Lucia with a secret they hoped would never be discovered.
1857, Naomi is married and living on a plantation in Maryland. She has a loving husband and life is good, until an overseer for the slaves is hired. He knows what happened on St. Lucia and unless his demands are met is willing to expose her past.

This historical fiction novel includes murder, greed, slavery, the Underground Railroad and a love story. The attention to detail allows you to know the characters and how they interact.

The mistress of the Hickory Hills plantation is harboring a lethal secret from her past. Slaves Billy Giles and Coffey Green dream of a new life of freedom. Daughter Annabelle loves a childhood friend, but her parents want her to wed an up-and-coming politician. When a new overseer is hired, will his cruel intentions lead to misery and horrible ends for all?

Author Miller weaves an intriguing mystery set in the antebellum world where the few have incredible wealth, and many lead lives where little hope for a better life exists. The human spirit can triumph over many trials, but in some cases, the best of intentions is not enough. Will a common enemy unite the dreams and plans of the residents of Hickory Hill?

This was a fascinating, historical mystery that lays bare the raw emotions and harsh realities experienced during the antebellum period. I found the characters compelling, the mysteries intriguing, and their emotions and dreams tugged at the heart. A captivating read, highly recommended!

This author has an exceptional gift for storytelling. His latest release did not disappoint. The Secrets of Hickory Hill is a captivating, historical mystery set in 1857 on a plantation on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

The story follows the lives of the Banks family who are keen to marry off their youngest child, Annabelle. A beautiful, determined young woman who is stubbornly refusing to bend to her mother’s will and marry her parents preferred choice of a prominent lawyer and promising politician. However, Annabelle’s heart lies with her childhood friend and sweetheart Adrian Reed who she is intent on marrying no matter what.

With a cast of complex and intriguing characters that weave a trail of murder, deceit, tragedy and hope, this story will pull at your heart strings and leave a lasting impression. Highly recommended.
