A beautiful, magical dose of escapism that all fairytale lovers need to read! The book starts at a royal ball at the kingdom of Lune, so I instantly knew I would like it. Princesses and princes, balls, castles, kingdoms, and magic! This has all the fairytale vibes of a Disney movie and I felt so at home!

Prince Henry, the Prince of the moonflower kingdom of Lune, is very likable and relatable! He’s one of those, handsome but doesn’t know he’s handsome, type of characters. He struggles with not fitting in and not feeling stereotypically “princely” enough. He’s rather invisible for being a second, not crown prince, yet loves the fact that he doesn’t have the pressure or responsibility, and doesn’t mind being second fiddle to his older brother. His humble nature is such a nice contrast! I think he may be my favorite prince in all of these books because he is just so patient and overwhelmingly good. It’s a bit sad how he is so overlooked and overshadowed by his brother that he is taken by how kind Raina was to him, because he doesn’t receive attention or kindness from others often. All Raina had to do to win over the invisible second prince was to simply see him. It only took one magical moment, and a dance amongst the moonflowers, for them to fall in love. It truly is a fairytale, with a prince and a mysterious maiden falling in love as they dance at midnight amongst a sea of glowing flowers at the Midnight Moon Ball. And what a pretty visual that scene makes!

Each book just gets better than the last. It ties together perfectly with the other books that take place on Terra, perfectly setting the stage for the first book in the series (since this is a prequel). The worldbuilding is so well planned that each book can easily build upon the setting and make it even more interesting. The ancients and the curses and the history of Terra all are woven together perfectly. For those of you who’ve read the other books, a fan favorite makes a cameo in this one too!

This sweet little book is also heart melting! Admittedly I am not a romantic and romance is not my preferred genre, unless it is a fairytale of course. Typically, fairytales tend to be romances though, and though fairytales are the bulk of what I read, I read them for the fairytale setting and not for the romance. But this little book made my ice cold heart of stone melt! Kayla writes the most sweetest, heart melting romances that makes me wish I were more of a romantic! Sure, some suspension of disbelief is required for Raina to not even remotely suspect why the pig farmer looks exactly like the prince, but maybe we can just say the ancients magic was involved in that 😂

Also, I really need a recipe for that blue bubble drink they have at that ball.

He had me at Milady!

Oh how I adored this prequel of the Cursed Kingdom Chronicles! If you are very curious about Prince Liam’s parents, this is their story. Prince Henry is not your average Prince, often left in the shadows. Lady Raina is a noble woman who likes to speak her mind. They have of one the sweetest love story. I loved the love letters! One of my favorite parts of the story. The pigs were hilarious! Furthermore, I love how they respected each other’s grief and help each other through it. This novella is a easy quick read. The romance is a clean closed door relationship between a married couple. Nothing more than kissing. Adored One is such a delightful love story that brings all the feels. Hands down one of my favorite King Thrushbeard retellings!

I received an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.

Such a bizarre journey, for I cannot understand the urge put forward so strongly to perform this massive deception.
(Not mentioning the inklings and heated kisses happening during said deception.)

I wasn't really familiar with the King Thrushbeard fairy tale until I read two retellings last year. It's slowly turning into one of my favorite stories for a retelling. And "Adored One" definitely confirmed that!

This is a sweet, heartfelt, and swoony version!

It might be a "shorter" novella, but it didn't feel that way. Novella's sometimes feel a bit rushed or incomplete. But this one had everything you could ask for and had good pacing. The story was just perfectly complete! Although I could have read many more chapters about this lovely couple 😉
Henry and Raina had such great chemistry!

Because of the letters in the beginning, it feels more realistic how Henry and Raina fall in love in a shorter time frame. And the romantic in me just adores love letters 😍

Raina likes to speak her mind, but she has a kind character. Because of her grief, she acts out.

Henry is definitely a swoony prince!! I really like Liam, but I think his father dethrones him a little bit 😁 Henry is just so caring, humble, patient, and sweet!

I loved that Raina saw the invisible prince and that Henry could still see the sweetness through Raina's numbness and pain.

I really loved, am fond of, enjoyed, cherished, or better said, ADORED this story! "

This was a really fun clean ya fantasy. The love story told in this book is really sweet, although the fmc did drive me crazy with her attitude for a lot of the book. This is a story of loss and redemption and finding the light in the darkness.

I absolutely adored this book! (Pun intended) Adored One tells the story of Henry and Raina. This is a novella so it’s a quick fast paced read but is very enjoyable. Even though it’s fast paced there is character and relationship development which I enjoy. Raina suffers the loss of her mother and also her beloved (or does she really lose her beloved???) and is forced to marry a pig farmer. She learns a lot about herself and about love while being married to said pig farmer. If you like cozy comfort reads and swoony kisses you’ll truly enjoy Adored One!

"Adored One: A King Thrushbeard Retelling" by Kayla Eshbaugh is a delightful prequel novella in The Cursed Kingdom Chronicles series. Set in the ancient land of Terra, where curses abound and royalty strives for their happily-ever-afters, this story reimagines the classic King Thrushbeard fairy tale with fresh and engaging twists.

The story follows Lady Raina, who is thrown into despair after losing her mother and her beloved. Her grief leads her to reject all suitors, which tests her father's patience until he declares that the next man to arrive at their estate, whether noble or commoner, will become her husband. Enter Prince Henry, disguised as a pig farmer, who is on his own journey of love and duty.

Henry, the second prince of Embra, has always lived in his older brother's shadow. While accompanying his brother on a kingdom tour, Henry's heart belongs to Lady Raina, whom he has fallen for through their letters. When Raina stops replying after Henry confesses his love, he fears the worst. As fate determines them to be true love, Henry must navigate a web of deceit to save his love and find his happily-ever-after.

Kayla Eshbaugh excels at crafting a heartwarming and nuanced narrative. Despite the novella's brevity, the characters are richly developed, and their evolving relationship is portrayed with care and authenticity. The alternating viewpoints of Raina and Henry provide depth to their individual struggles and the gradual building of their bond.

Raina's journey from sorrow to self-discovery and love is beautifully written. Her initial rejection of her new life and her eventual acceptance of Henry's kindness showcase her growth and resilience. Henry's patience and genuine affection for Raina make him a compelling character, and their dynamic is both sweet and realistic.

One of the standout aspects of "Adored One" is its handling of grief and healing. The story respects the characters' emotions and the time they need to process their losses, making their eventual connection more meaningful. The inclusion of popular tropes like arranged marriage, secret identity, and "fish out of water" adds charm and excitement to the narrative.

The novella also provides delightful glimpses into the magical world of Terra and hints at events that unfold in "True Princess," another book in the series. Fans of the series will appreciate the deeper insights into Prince Liam's parents' story and the intricate connections between the books.

Overall, "Adored One" is a beautifully crafted retelling of King Thrushbeard, filled with emotion, romance, and magical elements. It is a quick read that doesn't feel rushed, making it perfect for those who enjoy heartwarming fairy tale retellings. Kayla Eshbaugh's skillful storytelling and attention to character development ensure that this novella is a memorable addition to The Cursed Kingdom Chronicles.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is connected to Kayla’s Cursed Kingdom Chronicles series, but occurs in the past; it can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Henry & Raina’s points of view

(^ these are Prince Liam’s parents’ – Liam from True Princess)

– both characters lose a family member during the story

Review:

Kayla Eshbaugh’s take on the King Thrushbeard tale was very interesting and a little unexpected! I really enjoyed it! Henry and Raina’s story was so sweet and also a little heartbreaking with what they had to go through before they could be together for real. I loved that there were lessons thrown in (that Raina had to learn for herself when the time was right, but also for Henry in needing to be patient and letting her have the time to work things out for herself). It made the story that much more emotional and compelling as I was reading through!

Summary:

Prince Henry of Embra is content in his place as the second born, and less noticed, son of the royal family. It allows him to have the freedom to truly be himself and hide in the shadows when at undesirable but mandatory royal functions. Until one day a lady of the Lune court catches her eye on him and shows true interest in him. At first, Lady Raina only knows him as another courtier trying to leave the stifling ballroom, but before they part for the night Henry’s lineage is revealed. As they keep up correspondence, Henry finds himself falling for her and tells her of his feelings. But then the letters stop and he worries that Raina doesn’t feel the same. When trouble comes to Embra and Henry is forced to choose a wife, he has to find out if Raina truly does not return his feelings or if there is something between them. But when he gets back to Lune, Henry finds himself agreeing to pretending to be someone else in order to get his happily ever after with his lovely Lady Raina…

Lady Raina fell for Prince Henry that night and through their various letters. But when a turn for the worse has her mother passing away and then news of Henry passing reach her, Raina finds herself buried in despair. No matter what her father does, he can’t get her to leave her room. Even when he demands that she entertain suitors, Raina is far from ready to entertain the thought of anyone but the love she lost. So she makes sure that each suitor has no desire to return by the end of their meeting. Her father hits his wits end and proclaims that the next man to enter their home will marry Raina, no matter his station. She thinks he’s bluffing, but by the end of the day Raina finds herself married to a pig farmer who lives in another kingdom…

I love LOVE LOVED this book, you guys! It’s such an amazing prequel to this wonderful series. I loved getting to see how Liam’s parents met, and get all the details behind their love story. This story has popular tropes such as arranged marriage, only one bed, secret identity, and “fish out of water”- a pairing of a pig farmer with a noble woman! 🥰

I loved seeing how Raina and Ben bonded over their journey, and how patient and caring Ben was toward Raina. He did everything he could to make her comfortable and treat her well despite the fact he was a commoner and she was of a much higher status. This book was filled with humor, emotional moments, romantic angst, and deep intimacy (while still being closed door/ “clean”). Their kiss was everything!

Ben is such a cinnamon roll of a male lead, and Raina brings an interesting quality as she’s spunky and opinionated! Plus there’s an entire section filled with love letters, and I adored that so much. 🥹

The ending was great- but I won’t say much about it as I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who wants to read this amazing book!

Overall, I rate this one:

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 Stars (5/5 Stars)

And I highly recommend this King Thrushbeard retelling and prequel to the Cursed Kingdom Chronicles to anyone who loves retellings, sweet romance, arranged marriage, love letters, and swoon-worthy moments!

This book was given to me by the author as an ARC. That being said, the following review is written of my own opinions and thoughts.

This delightful prequel novella was everything an introduction to Terra should be. Swoon, pain, and just a touch of lore coated Raina and Henry’s story in just the right amount of magic.

While I’ve never experienced the pain Raina went through in this story, I can tell from the writing that it is raw, real, and authentically portrayed. At her heart, she’s a sweet girl, but a scarred one and finds opening herself up to love after loss extremely difficult.

In regard to our King Thrushbeard (thank you Kayla for the clever little pun scene); I have found myself falling in love with this fairytale! Henry was a marvelous male lead leaving me with a strong urge to find myself a boyfriend who will call me “milady” whenever I see him (though not heart-capturing like Prince Gideon — book 4) and the hidden identity trope has always been a fave of mine.

Unfortunately, my biggest issue with this book is its length! I so wish it was longer and had a more complex plot like the other Cursed Kingdom Chronicles (aka no quotes besties, sorry), but I understand it’s a novella and for an intro to the world it is amazing.

Tropes:
Marriage of Convenience
Pseudo-Enemies to Lovers
Forced-Proximity

A beautiful retelling of King Thrushbeard.

After Henry and Raina's story was teased in True Princess, it was brilliant to see the full story and learn how they came to be king and queen of Embra.

Henry was such a sweetheart. Not willing to give up on the woman he first fell for even when it was hard to find her. It can be hard being a younger sibling, feeling like your in your older sibling's shadow but Henry was very secure in who he was and his love for farm work. I also love how the deception was handled in this retelling - Henry felt deeply uncomfortable lying to Raina but there was a good reason why he did and even when they were living as commoners, he still treated her like a queen.

Grief affects everyone differently and sometimes it can swallow a person like it did with Raina, twisting her into someone unrecognisable to the woman Henry met. Again, I do appreciate that in this retelling, there was a reason for her insults and why she treated others unfairly. I also appreciate that she never looked down on a commoner's life as beneath her but it was more a case that it was a completely different life that she wasn't equipped and didn't have the skills for. She quickly realised how kind 'Ben' was being to her even though she was being rude to him and worked to be better to finally move forward and start living again.

I also love that we got to see more of Bey and learn about his past with the royal family. I love how many hints there were of the events that happen in True Princess and I'm looking forward to the next book set in this world.

This was so adorable! Honestly, I was worried at first. Henry and Raina's story starts off with a meet cute and then.....tragedy changes her.
I was not liking how Raina was behaving and treating others and found it unbelievable she didn't "see Henry" (can't say more without spoiling). BUT, Henry didn't give up on her and Raina had an INCREDIBLE character arc!
It was slow but sure and realistic character development. I began to understand Raina more as she began to learn more about her own emotions.
Although it starts as a meet cute/love at first sight, this becomes a slow burn romance. But trust me, it is WORTH THE WAIT 😍
Henry made ME swoon 😍 haha
As they start to fall in love, Henry and Raina's romance as they got to know each other as people.....was just SO BEAUTIFUL! By the end I couldn't get enough of these too!
Absolutely loved this novella. Kayla Eshbaugh did not disappoint!
This was a short but sweet story with all the feels and excellent world building! Love this series 🤩

Oh my goodness what a wonderful story!!! I didn’t know the King Thrushbeard story before reading this but it was sooo cute! And those kisses! *swoon* (while still keeping it clean). I love how deeply and thoroughly in love they are and how their motivations are so understandable. She is grieving, so it hints that while there are a few coping mechanisms that could have been used by grievers she chose to shut herself off from love and lash out at her father and suitors to drive them away.

But who doesn’t love a character who kindly and stubbornly refuses give on her. He won’t leave her side and takes good care of her and sees her harsh words and complaints as what they are, a mask to hide her pain. But he doesn’t push her, he respects her wishes, he worries about how things will affect their relationship. Plus you get shared bed, mistaken identity, Girl who is too honest to fit the status quo (i identify w her), and kisses that made me fall in love 💕. Super cute story. Love it.

This is a great book. I always love King Thrushbeard retellings, and this one is especially delightful. It’s very well done, and is a super sweet and enjoyable read.

I liked that her father wasn’t evil, but truly wanted what was best for her. I also liked the fledgling relationship that was built prior to the blind marriage. Henry was beyond sweet, and though Raina was quite beastly when they were first married, she turned out to be a lovable character as well.

There were some grammatical issues and very strange placement and frequency of italics, but it wasn’t too distracting.

Highly recommended for any who enjoy a good fairy tale.

Content:
There is no foul language, violence, or sex. There is embracing and a few mildly descriptive kisses. There is mention of the Creator and ‘Ancients’, which appear to be fairy godmothers of sorts.

Trigger warnings - death of a parent and a sibling

Adored One by Kayla Eshbaugh
🥿 A common pig farmer
🥿 Sudden loss
🥿 Whirlwind romance
🥿 World turned upside down
🥿 Swoony romance, kisses (no spice)
Genre: Fairytale fantasy
A King Thrushbeard retelling. When her father forces her to entertain suitors, Raina finds something wrong with every single one of them... Who will capture her heart?
Although this one starts off differently than the original King Thrushbeard tale once it got going I found it a bit too predictable for my liking. I also prefer more plot with my romance as their relationship was really the only focus here. I do plan on continuing the series.

A Great Thrushbeard Story and Prequel

I read all of the Cursed Kingdom Chronicles a couple of years ago, and although you don’t need them to enjoy this story, I’m definitely planning on reading them again now, or at least the first one.

King Thrushbeard is not a fairytale often retold, but it has always been one I have enjoyed. This story did a great job of doing so while tying it to grief and the broader world building of the series. This is a gentler story, the obstacles to overcome are not saving the entire kingdom from destruction, but the theme of finding yourself and your loved ones after grief is real and something almost everyone understands.

A lovely novella! The MMC's devotion was wholesome and absolutely charming, and I appreciated the evident growth in the FMC's character arc. 4.5 stars rounded up- I loved the story, but I had a few thoughts. First, the FMC's attitude was so harsh at the beginning of the marriage that it left me questioning how the MMC could stand her! I also noted quite a few grammar errors (sentence fragments, incorrect punctuation, repetitious phrases, etc.), but I ultimately loved the plot and MMC enough to round up to 5 stars.

Fantasy Romance | Fairytale Retelling | Clean & Whimsical | Grief, Healing & True Love

Welcome to Terra, where curses linger and royalty chase their happily-ever-afters. Adored One is a prequel novella in The Cursed Kingdom Chronicles, and oh my goodness—it stole my heart.

I’d never heard of the King Thrushbeard fairytale before, but this retelling was absolutely enchanting. Prince Henry of Lune is one of the most endearing princes I’ve ever read—humble, kind, and often overlooked as the “second prince,” yet so full of quiet strength and goodness. His love story with Lady Raina is tender and sweet, born from grief, hope, and one magical moonlit dance among glowing flowers.

The letters between them made me swoon, the pigs had me laughing, and their respect for one another’s sorrow made their romance all the more beautiful. Despite being a novella, it never felt rushed—it was complete, heartfelt, and perfectly paced.

This one felt like the perfect introduction to the series, with all the whimsical charm of a fairytale and the emotional depth of a love story worth remembering.

An excellent addition to the Cursed Kingdom Chronicles! This retelling of King Thrushbeard is super endearing and swoony-worthy. I love the chemistry between Henry and Raina, the heartfelt love confessions, and the challenges they had to overcome. I do not want to reveal too much. I recommend it to any reader who wants to read about captivating characters and get submerged in a charming world with a romantic duo.

A truly amazing story of loss and reignited love starring the parents of one of The Cursed Kingdom Chronicles main heroes. It was sweet reading about the two main leads fall in love: both originally through letters then again while they traveled to Embra. However, the best part was seeing Ora again, if it was very brief! After all, you can’t have a CKC story without her popping up to give wise and helpful advise! Another job well done Kayla. You truly earned these five stars!

Thank you Author Kayla Eshbaugh for the ARC! This might be one of my top favorites from Kayla! Henry and Raina had me swooning. The dance! The letters! It was all so magical and lovely. Raina suffers two big losses and her father insists that she gets married. There's no way she can fall for this man, right? I enjoyed the trip to the kingdoms of Terra and always smile when there is a happily ever after!

I really love the cursed chronicles series and this novella of Liam’s parents didn’t disappoint. This is a story of grief, love, and love’s ability to heal the most broken of hearts. In fact, I think every woman needs a Henry of their own. He proved himself patient and kind, loving even when Raina wasn’t kind.

I read the arc of this book and am leaving my honest opinion.
