If you like Andy McNab, Steven Leather, Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne and Lee Child's Jack Reacher, you will love this heart-stopping thriller.
A former Special Forces soldier and Government Agent is called upon to help a family in danger.
Jack Kane is a wanted man... governments want him dead... and he is the last hope for a family facing a ruthless private military organisation.
A UK football club owned by a father daughter team finds itself the subject of an aggressive takeover bid. Things get out of control when the buyers turn out to be a company backed by a private military group with links to the Russian Government. Jack Kane and Frank Craven are the family's last hope as they try to survive brutal attacks and violent thugs in this life or death thriller.
Kane is pursued by savage military thugs and vicious government agents. Can he survive and save the family in his fast paced adventure packed with action, twists, and unforgettable characters?
I didn’t like this book. I was hoping this would be my new John Milton series but I think this is the end for me.
If Kane knew he was still going to be doing this kind of work (and getting paid a lot for it!), why is he still so unfit? And if he’s so unfit how can he still run and fight like he used to? How can he take bullets and head butts and just walk them off?
I don’t understand why he takes Craven with him. He doesn’t offer anything: he’s not tech savvy, he’s not a good detective, he can’t fight, the only reason he has money is Kane gave it to him. What does he bring?! If anything he’s more of a liability than helpful and he just swears a lot.
Every time Kane’s kids come up, it’s mentioned how much he loves them and can’t bear to lose them and would do anything for them. Yeah, anything except give up his job. Instead he puts them in a foreign boarding school and fobs them off on a woman who has cancer. The fact that he seems to think a present from the airport (or whatever it was) is enough to make up for his absence is insane.
I didn’t feel sorry for Jess and her dad at all. They were idiots. If you own something that is haemorrhaging money and a huge, violent, and powerful organisation comes at you demanding you sell: you sell. You take the money, go somewhere else, and start over. You don’t put your lives, and everyone’s around you, at risk because it’s “your dream”. Idiots. The fact that this didn’t see to even be an option for the father & daughter until she’s being held captive is mind boggling.
I also didn’t really understand the relationship with Jess & Kane. It seemed to go from absolute hatred to sex (with drinks involved, obviously) and then love. Kane went from feeling guilty every time he so much as thought of another woman, to going on a rampage because Jess had been taken. Which makes zero sense to me. Maybe I’m just too autistic to understand.
One thing that consistently bugged me was the use of full names: “Jack Kane thought he was going to die…” “Craven had a gun in his right hand and Jess Moore in his left”. “Kane held Jess Moore to his chest”. WE KNOW WHO THEY ARE!
A few memorable lines:
“Life isn’t about money, Mr Kane…” says the billionaire.
“She’s gone.” And there was a note of sadness in Kanes voice that Craven had never heard before. Really? Not even when his wife was murdered?
And the ending was so anticlimactic I’ve forgotten it already…

I'm an avid "Thriller" reader and I know there is a balance between the "thrill" of a good action adventure and "believability." A good fiction writer knows how important it is for the reader to be able to validate the "action" elements in their own minds. In other words, as you read, you say to yourself; "Hey, I think this could really happen!" I found myself saying the opposite throughout this book. I have to say I did feel compassion for poor "Jess" (the damsel in distress). She moved from one threatening situation to another. I found myself wondering when or if our "hero" was ever going to rescue her. What happened to her? Her father? The football team? And most importantly, did our widowed "hero" ever reunite with his young children who were left behind so that adrenaline pumping adventures could be pursued? What kind of a "good-guy" father does that? No immediate closure on so many key elements of this story line. I know that some of these questions may be answered in the author's "next in series." But I won't know this. I'll be moving on. I believe Mr. Stone has potential but he needs to keep working at it.
Once again an author has a great first book, with a realistic character in realistic situations..only to turn it into crap that continually leaves you shaking your head at the shear stupidity…horrible book. If it wasn’t for my OCD and the need to finish a book I start, I’d have quit when Jack didn’t kill his arch nemesis just so’he could get in his head so he’d make a mistake’…the whole book was riddled with dumb scenarios….
A mission that has Kane and Craven employed to protect a father and daughter who own a football club close to promotion to the premier league. An assignment that at first looked easy become difficult as a face from Kane’s past who he thought was dead kidnaps the daughter as a means to extract revenge on Kane while earning financial reward from the Russians wanting control of the club.
Brilliant from start to finish. On the edge of my seat with the turning of every page. Great story, great action. A fine thriller from page one. What's next for Tom Kane ?
Kane is not a man, a creature wrapped in the skin of a human
He’s stabbed, shot, concussed and generally has the ++++ beaten out of him, but he always gets up, like the superhero he is. Drivel and overwrought heroism.
Good read that kept you wondering what could be next and how it would be dealt with Includes action, stealth, romance, grit and determination in storey that keeps you wanting to turn page to next.
My first time reading from Dan Stone. I've enjoyed the first 3 books A LOT. Looking forward to the last of this series coming out the end of this month. good work!!
