Loved this one❤️ The writing is very easy to understand. Loved all the tips & tricks provided and Joe’s optimism for the future: gardeners are saving the world!
Will keep this close to me as I explore gardening for the first season.
This is a great book. I read it to try and give myself a bit more motivation to get in my garden - it certainly succeeded there. Lots of great advice / thoughts about gardening. I won’t be using any more weed killer - despite being overrun. I’ll be much more conscious of the importance of my garden to wildlife in general and will take the time to enjoy not only the plants but the wildlife in my garden. Great job Joe!
It was so interesting and packed full of ideas, tips and tricks and advice for anyone either starting out on their gardening journey or someone who is already an avid gardener! Also proof that you can grow your own and live a greener and more sustainable life regardless of how much space you have, there really was something in there for everyone😊 it’s also written really well and is easy to follow, felt like having a chat with a friend!
Highly recommend to anyone who wants to dip their toes into gardening and living a more sustainable life or anyone who just wants to feel closer to nature!
I picked up this book from the local library this June and let me tell you, I tore through it by early summer because I was so excited to dive into its ideas! As someone who’s been itching to make my garden more eco-friendly, Joe’s book felt like a perfect guide—part inspiration, part practical playbook.
Joe Clark brings a refreshing, down-to-earth vibe to this book. His passion for gardening shines through, rooted in childhood memories with his great-grandmother n a “just try it” mentality that makes me feel like anyone can grow something, anywhere. Whether we’ve got a sprawling backyard or just a windowsill, Joe’s got tips for you. I loved how he emphasizes that gardens—big or small—can make a real difference for the planet, from boosting biodiversity to cutting down food miles. His stat about the UK’s 22 million gardens having a collective impact really stuck with me
The book covers all the essentials: growing my own food, composting, attracting pollinators & even embracing garden “pests” as part of the ecosystem. I found the step-by-step guide to planting a tree super helpful, and his DIY ideas—like making an urban bee hotel or organic pest controls—are creative/wallet-friendly. The checklists at the end of each chapter were a nice touch, prompting me to jot down what worked in my garden this season and what I want to tweak next year. The section on the “Natural Health System” also hit home, showing how gardening can lift your mood and health—something I felt firsthand as I got my hands dirty this spring.
What sets this book apart is Joe’s personal anecdotes, like rewilding his front garden or rethinking “bad gardening” from his childhood. It feels like chatting with a friend who’s excited to share what they’ve learned, not a lecture from a know-it-all expert. The illustrations are gorgeous, too, making it a joy to flip through.
If I had to nitpick, some of the advice—like growing food or composting—might feel familiar to seasoned gardeners. But even then, Joe’s approachable style & focus on sustainability make it a great refresher. For beginners @ anyone wanting to garden with the planet in mind, this is a fantastic starting point. Accept failures but keep notes as quoted by Joe definitely will be implemented in anything I plant from now on.
I read it so fast because I couldn’t wait to try Joe’s tips in my own garden, especially his ideas for small-space growing (perfect for my tiny patio!). It’s the kind of book that gets you excited to experiment, whether you’re planting peppers or building a hedgehog hotel. Highly recommend for anyone looking to grow their own food, save some money, and help the planet—one plant at a time.
Absolutely loved this book (thank you to Pan Macmillain for the arc!). I was always into gardening but only on a beginners level. Since reading this, I have bought a compact turning composter and started seedlings for my summer plants. Now I just need the weather to improve to get outside!
It's a perfect book if you love gardening and it can appreciated by beginners or experts as there's plenty of ideas. Informative, well written, entertaining, easy to follow Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
There was a lot of "why" and not a lot of "how." I already know the why, but wanted to know tips and tricks. I did learn a few tricks, but it also solidified a lot of what I already know.
